Android Auto does not provide a documented, universal “disable music ducking” switch. When navigation speaks, the car normally lowers media temporarily so you can hear the instruction. Whether you can reduce or disable that effect depends mainly on the vehicle or receiver’s audio system. First determine whether the problem is an overly loud navigation channel or the car’s mixing behavior, then use the matching control.
What is actually being lowered?
People commonly describe two different problems as “Android Auto lowering the music.” Separating them prevents you from changing the wrong setting.
Navigation is too loud
Some cars expose navigation, media and voice as separate volume channels. In that case, the music may be ducking by a normal amount, but the spoken prompt is set much louder than you want. Lowering the navigation or guidance channel while a prompt is playing can solve the annoyance without changing your music level.

Other systems intentionally reduce, or “duck,” music whenever a navigation announcement is active. Android Auto’s consumer help does not document a global setting that keeps music at its normal level while retaining full spoken prompts. A particular vehicle or aftermarket receiver may still offer its own mix, attenuation or announcement setting. Its availability and label depend on the make, model, year and head unit.

Why the phone may not have the answer
Android Auto sends navigation audio to the vehicle. The vehicle’s infotainment system decides how that audio is mixed with music in many installations. Android Automotive technical documentation describes ducking as part of system-level audio management; that explains why the relevant control can live in the car rather than in the Android Auto phone interface. It does not mean every Android Auto vehicle exposes a user-adjustable ducking control.
Use the car’s navigation-volume channel first
This is the least disruptive fix when your vehicle supports independent channels.
- Connect the phone to Android Auto and start a route in your navigation app.
- Wait until a spoken instruction is playing.
- Turn the vehicle’s volume knob or press the steering-wheel volume control while the instruction is audible.
- Listen to the next prompt. On systems with separate channels, the adjustment changes navigation volume rather than the music channel.
The same action does not behave identically in every vehicle. Some cars assign the control to whichever source is currently speaking; others apply it to a shared volume. If the music changes instead of the prompt, restore the music level and look in the vehicle manual for a navigation, guidance, announcement or prompt-volume control.
Google Android Auto Help states that “in some vehicles, the volumes for navigation, media, and voice may be controlled separately.” That is why a volume change made during a prompt can have a different result from the same button press made while music is playing. The statement is not a guarantee that your particular car has three adjustable channels, so verify the behavior in your own vehicle.
A 10-minute setup and test workflow
Use this order so each experiment answers one question instead of changing several audio settings at once.
- Park safely. Do not browse menus or adjust the phone while moving. Connect Android Auto and select the audio source that normally carries your music.
- Set a baseline. Play music at your ordinary listening level and start a short route. Note whether the music becomes slightly quieter, nearly silent, or unchanged when a prompt begins.
- Classify the complaint. If the music returns to its old level but the prompt is painfully loud, adjust guidance volume. If the prompt is comfortable but the music nearly disappears, look for a vehicle mix or attenuation control.
- Adjust during speech. Trigger another prompt and use the car’s knob or steering-wheel control while the words are audible. This is the only reliable way to discover whether the car keeps navigation volume separately.
- Change one app setting. Lower Maps or Waze guidance volume, or select a less-talkative Waze mode. Test another prompt before changing anything else.
- Record the result. Write down the vehicle year, infotainment model and which control changed. This makes the owner’s manual or receiver support instructions easier to match.
A short route is preferable to a long drive for testing. Confirm that a normal turn, a warning and any other important alert you use are still audible before relying on the new setting.
Lower Google Maps guidance volume
Google Maps has a separate guidance-level setting. It changes how loud Maps speaks; Google does not describe it as a control for the strength of music ducking.

- Tap your profile picture.
- Choose Settings.
- Open Navigation.
- Under guidance volume, choose a level lower than Louder if that option is selected.
Start a route and test the result with the car at your usual music level. Lower guidance makes each announcement less prominent, but the vehicle may still reduce music by the same amount while the announcement is active.
Check that Maps is not muted
Maps can be set to mute or play alerts only. If your goal is to keep spoken turn-by-turn directions, make sure the navigation sound control is enabled before troubleshooting the car’s mixer. Muting Maps avoids the interruption but is not a way to preserve audible directions.

Try Play voice over Bluetooth when routing is wrong
Google Maps also provides a Play voice over Bluetooth option. This changes the path used for routing voice to the car speakers. It can help when prompts are coming from the phone speaker or an unexpected audio channel. It does not specify how much the vehicle lowers music, so treat it as a speaker-routing fix, not a ducking switch.
If Bluetooth routing makes no difference, check which device is selected for Android Auto and whether the car is playing the Android Auto source rather than another Bluetooth input. Routing and mixing are separate questions: a prompt can reach the correct speakers and still be mixed too aggressively by the vehicle.
Adjust Waze without disabling every alert
If Waze is the navigation app, its sound modes let you reduce spoken interruptions at the app level.
Waze sound modes
| Mode | What you hear | Best use |
|---|---|---|
| Normal | Regular spoken navigation and alerts. | You want complete voice guidance. |
| Less chatty | Essential instructions and alerts, with fewer spoken announcements. | You want turn guidance but fewer interruptions. |
| Only alerts | Alerts remain; spoken turn-by-turn guidance is removed. | You want warnings without routine directions. |
| Off | No Waze voice. | You are navigating visually or using another source for directions. |
These choices reduce the amount of speech or mute it. They are not documented as settings for the percentage by which music is ducked.
Change Waze’s guidance level
Waze has its own guidance-volume control. In Android Auto, Waze’s help instructions direct you to disconnect the phone and change the phone volume to adjust the in-car Waze level. Reconnect after setting the desired level, then test a route. The exact menu wording can change with app releases, so follow the sound or voice guidance controls shown in your installed version.
Do not confuse Less chatty with a quieter speaker. Less chatty changes how often Waze talks; the guidance-volume control changes how loud the remaining speech is. Only alerts removes routine spoken turns while preserving alert sounds, and Off removes Waze voice altogether.
Look for a vehicle or receiver mixing control
If reducing guidance volume does not solve the problem, inspect the infotainment settings and owner’s manual. Search for labels such as:
- Navigation volume
- Guidance volume
- Prompt or announcement volume
- Audio mix
- Voice-over-media level
- Navigation attenuation
- Duck, fade or interrupt media
Some systems expose only separate source volumes. Others provide an explicit attenuation or mix choice. A manual may instruct you to adjust the navigation channel while a prompt is active because the setting is unavailable when navigation is silent.
Factory infotainment versus aftermarket receivers
A factory system may tie Android Auto’s navigation audio to the car’s built-in guidance channel. An aftermarket receiver can use different names and may place the setting under sound, source, navigation or system audio. Do not assume that a setting found for one receiver applies to another. Record the exact vehicle year and receiver model before following instructions from a manual or support page.

Look for a setting that describes the relationship between media and announcements, not merely a general master-volume slider. A master control changes everything. A navigation-volume control changes the prompt level. An attenuation or mix control is the type that could alter how far music falls during speech, if the receiver offers it.

| Your goal | Use this control | What it changes | What it does not change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Make spoken prompts quieter | Car navigation volume or Maps/Waze guidance volume | Prompt loudness | The vehicle’s ducking behavior |
| Hear fewer spoken instructions | Waze Less chatty or Only alerts; equivalent app options where available | How often the app speaks | The mix level during prompts that remain |
| Send navigation to the car speakers | Maps Play voice over Bluetooth | Speaker or route used for voice | How much music is attenuated |
| Keep music from being reduced | Vehicle or receiver audio-mix/attenuation setting, if provided | Media-versus-navigation mixing | Settings that the car does not expose |
This distinction matters because changing an app’s guidance level cannot create a vehicle-level “no ducking” mode, and changing Bluetooth routing cannot make a prompt quieter by itself.
What to do when there is no disable-ducking option
If your manual and receiver menus contain no mix or attenuation control, there may be no supported way to retain full-volume music and full spoken navigation simultaneously on that installation. You then have three practical choices:
- Keep voice directions and lower their channel until the interruption is acceptable.
- Use a less verbose mode, such as Waze Less chatty, to reduce the number of ducking events.
- Use alerts-only or mute guidance and rely on the map display for routine turns.
The last option removes spoken turn-by-turn instructions, so it is appropriate only if you can safely monitor the display or another source. Never change settings while driving; configure them before departure or have a passenger operate the phone.
There is no need to buy a generic accessory just to solve this symptom. The available control is determined by the car, receiver and navigation app, and the official guidance does not identify a universal product or adapter that adds an anti-ducking switch.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

The music becomes quiet, but the prompt is also too loud
Lower the navigation channel while a prompt plays, then reduce Maps or Waze guidance volume if needed. If the music still drops by the same amount, the remaining effect is the vehicle’s mixer rather than the prompt level.
The volume buttons change music instead of navigation
Your vehicle may not provide independent channels, or the prompt may have ended before the adjustment was made. Trigger another prompt, keep it audible, and try the control again. If it still changes music, consult the manual for a dedicated navigation or announcement setting.
Maps speaks through the phone
Check the Maps sound setting and test Play voice over Bluetooth. Confirm that the phone is connected to the intended Android Auto session and that the car is on the Android Auto audio source.
Waze is silent after changing modes
Verify that the mode is not Off and that the phone’s Waze volume is raised. Waze’s Android Auto guidance directs users to disconnect the phone before changing the in-car Waze level; reconnect and test after the adjustment.

Only some prompts trigger ducking
Different alert types can use different channels. A turn instruction, traffic warning or system announcement may be mixed separately. Test more than one prompt and note which source is speaking before deciding that the setting failed.
The setting worked once and then reset
Some vehicles store volume per source, driver profile or ignition cycle. Repeat the adjustment with Android Auto connected and check whether the car has a driver-profile or source-volume memory option. The exact behavior is vehicle-specific.
The music never returns to its previous level
Check whether the car has retained a lower media setting rather than temporarily ducking it. Stop navigation audio, return to the music source and restore the preferred media level while parked. Then run another prompt to determine whether the change was temporary or stored.
Changing Maps does not affect Waze
Guidance volume and sound modes belong to the navigation app producing the prompt. Configure Waze when Waze is active and Maps when Maps is active; changing one app’s guidance setting does not change the other app’s voice level or the car’s overall mix.
Android Auto and Android Automotive are not the same control surface
Android Auto runs from a compatible phone and projects supported apps to the car display. Android Automotive is an operating system integrated into the vehicle. Technical documentation for Android Automotive explains how system audio focus and ducking can be implemented, but it is not a promise that an Android Auto user will see the same menu or that every vehicle exposes a ducking slider. Use your own vehicle’s manual and receiver menus for the controls available to you.
This distinction also explains why instructions for a built-in Android Automotive vehicle may mention system audio policies that do not appear in a phone’s Android Auto settings. Treat such technical descriptions as an explanation of how a vehicle can manage audio, not as a hidden menu you can enable on every head unit.

- Set the car in Park before changing phone or receiver settings.
- Test at the normal music level with a short route or a known navigation simulation.
- Adjust one control at a time so you know whether the change affected prompt loudness, speech frequency, routing or media mixing.
- Confirm that important alerts remain audible after selecting a less-chatty or alerts-only mode.
- Restore a comfortable music level after changing a navigation channel; a channel adjustment can be remembered separately by some cars.
- Keep the vehicle manual or receiver model information available because menu names and behavior vary.
Frequently asked questions
Can I keep music at full volume and still hear Google Maps?
Only if your vehicle or receiver provides a suitable audio-mix or attenuation control. Google’s consumer Android Auto help does not document a universal switch for this. You can lower the prompt, reduce how often the app speaks, or turn guidance off, but those are different trade-offs.
Does lowering Maps guidance volume stop ducking?
No. It lowers the spoken guidance level. The car may still reduce music by the same amount while the quieter prompt is active.

What does Play voice over Bluetooth fix?
It changes where Maps sends routing voice. Use it when directions are coming from the phone or an unexpected channel. It does not control the vehicle’s music-attenuation amount.

Is Waze Less chatty the same as turning ducking off?
No. Less chatty reduces the number of spoken announcements while retaining essential instructions and alerts. It does not change the car’s mix level for prompts that remain.
Why does adjusting the knob during a prompt sometimes change music?
Not every vehicle separates navigation and media volume. Some apply the control to a shared channel, and some require the prompt to be active at the exact moment of adjustment. If repeated tests change music, consult the vehicle manual.
Will an Android Auto update add a universal control?
The official consumer help reviewed here does not promise such a control. The available behavior remains dependent on the vehicle, receiver and app settings. Check current documentation for your exact equipment rather than assuming an update changes its audio architecture.
Bottom line
There is no documented universal Android Auto switch that prevents music ducking during navigation prompts. Start by lowering the car’s navigation channel while a prompt is speaking, then adjust Google Maps or Waze guidance volume. Use Waze’s Less chatty or Only alerts modes when fewer announcements are the goal, and use Maps’ Play voice over Bluetooth only to correct speaker routing. To actually reduce or disable the music attenuation, look for a navigation-mix or announcement setting in the vehicle or receiver manual; if none exists, choose between quieter or less frequent prompts and uninterrupted music.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I keep music at full volume and still hear Google Maps?
Only when the vehicle or receiver offers an audio-mix or attenuation control. Android Auto’s consumer help does not document a universal anti-ducking switch.
Does lowering Maps guidance volume stop music ducking?
No. It lowers the prompt itself. The car may still reduce music by the same amount while the prompt plays.
What does Maps’ Play voice over Bluetooth option do?
It changes the route used to send navigation voice to the car speakers. It can correct speaker routing, but it does not set the amount of music attenuation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIs Waze Less chatty a ducking setting?
No. Less chatty reduces how often Waze speaks. It does not alter the vehicle’s mix level for announcements that remain.
Why do my volume buttons change music instead of navigation?
Your vehicle may use a shared volume channel, or the prompt may have ended before the adjustment. Try again while a prompt is audible, then consult the vehicle manual.
What if my car has no mix or attenuation setting?
Use a lower guidance level, Waze Less chatty, alerts-only or muted guidance. There may be no supported way to keep full-volume music and full spoken navigation simultaneously on that installation.
The Bottom Line
Android Auto has no documented universal anti-ducking switch. Adjust the car’s navigation channel during a prompt, then tune Maps or Waze guidance. For less speech, use Waze Less chatty or Only alerts. For less media attenuation, check the vehicle or receiver’s audio-mix settings; if none exist, choose the combination of voice and music that works safely for your car.
