On your phone, open Settings, search for Android Auto, and turn off Start music automatically (or the similarly named automatic media-start option). This is the best first step, but it may not stop playback if the media app or the car’s infotainment system is starting it independently.
Turn off Android Auto’s automatic music setting

Open the phone’s Settings app.

Search Settings for Android Auto, then open its settings.

Turn off Start music automatically. The wording or location may differ by phone; search is a practical way to find the option, not a menu path that is guaranteed on every device. Try starting the car again to see whether playback stops. Android Auto supports music and podcast playback through compatible apps, which you can select on the car display or control with voice commands. For app-specific problems, Google directs users to the app developer. Google Android Auto Help

If music still starts, identify what triggers it
Playback can begin at different points: when Bluetooth connects, when Android Auto launches, or after an interaction with the vehicle’s dashboard or controls. Noting when it happens can help narrow down which setting to check. Check the media app
If the same app starts each time, open that app’s settings and look for options related to automatic playback, resuming playback, or playback through external devices. Labels and availability vary by app, so there is no single path that applies to every music or podcast service. Community troubleshooting points to app settings as one possible cause. Check the car’s audio settings
Look in the vehicle’s infotainment or audio settings, or consult its owner’s manual, for media autoplay or resume behavior. Some vehicles may send a play command when they start; the setting and whether it exists are vehicle-specific. Android Auto Community; Android Auto Community

Consider a launcher workaround for one app
If only one app is involved, removing it from Android Auto’s launcher may help prevent that app from opening automatically. This is a limited, anecdotal workaround—not a general fix for playback commands from other apps or the car—and it may make the app less convenient to open in the vehicle. Android Auto Community

Why the Android Auto setting may not be the only cause
Android Auto’s automatic-start option addresses one part of the setup. The media app can have its own resume behavior, and the vehicle may initiate playback separately. Turning off the phone setting is therefore a sensible first attempt, not a universal guarantee.
Google’s Android for Cars developer guidance says, “Your app shouldn’t automatically start playing music when AAOS or Android Auto connects to your media browser service.” That instruction is for app developers and concerns what an app should do on connection; it does not guarantee that every app follows the guidance or prevent the vehicle from issuing a playback command. Distinguish car startup, Bluetooth connection, and Android Auto startup

Playback starts as soon as Bluetooth connects: Check the media app’s external-device or resume settings, then look for related vehicle audio options.

Playback begins after a dashboard or steering-wheel action: The vehicle interface may be sending a play command; check the vehicle’s audio settings or manual.
