Duplicate alerts usually come from two separate notification paths: a phone alert mirrored to Windows through Phone Link and a second alert generated by the desktop app. Keep the alerts you want, then disable the unwanted source. In Phone Link, open Settings > Features > Notifications, choose View apps, and turn off forwarding for the affected Android app. If the second banner is created by the desktop client, change that client’s own notification settings instead.
Why the same message appears twice
An Android app can notify you on the phone while a cross-device service forwards that notification to the computer. If you also installed the service’s Windows or desktop client, that client may create its own native notification for the same event. The two alerts look similar, but they are generated independently.
That distinction determines the correct fix. Phone Link controls the copy forwarded from Android. The desktop application controls its own banners, sounds, and badges. Android’s system settings control what the phone itself is allowed to show. Muting only one layer leaves the other layer active.
The three possible sources
- Phone Link: a mirrored Android notification displayed in the Windows notification area.
- The Android app: the original notification shown on the phone and made available to Phone Link.
- The desktop client: a notification created directly by an application installed on Windows or another computer operating system.
Identify the source before changing anything
Do not start by turning off every notification. First establish whether you are seeing one mirrored alert and one desktop-native alert, or two mirrored alerts caused by a synchronization problem.
- Check whether the computer runs Windows and whether Phone Link is enabled.
- When the next duplicate appears, inspect the notification’s wording, icon, and controls. A Phone Link item is associated with the phone connection; a desktop-native item comes from the installed computer client.
- Open Phone Link and look at its notification feed. If the app appears in that feed, one copy is being forwarded from Android.
- Open the separately installed desktop app and check whether it produces a banner when Phone Link is disconnected. If it does, that alert is independent.
- If you use another cross-device utility, use that utility’s per-app notification controls. Phone Link instructions do not automatically apply to other synchronization tools.
This test also separates duplicates from missing or hidden alerts. Android 15 can hide some sensitive notifications, including certain verification codes, in Phone Link. A hidden notification is not evidence that two alerts are being generated.
A quick disconnection test
Temporarily disconnect Phone Link, then trigger one harmless test event, such as sending a message to yourself. If a computer banner still appears, the desktop client is generating it. If no banner appears, reconnect Phone Link and inspect its per-app notification list. Restore your normal connection after testing so that you do not mistake a disconnected service for a fix.

Phone Link gives the most precise answer when you want phone alerts but no duplicate on Windows: filter only the affected Android app instead of silencing the app on the phone.

Stop a forwarded Android notification in Windows Phone Link
Microsoft’s current Phone Link controls let you filter forwarding per Android app while leaving other phone notifications enabled.
Turn off forwarding for one app
- Open Phone Link on the Windows computer.
- Select Settings.
- Open Features, then Notifications.
- Under Choose how apps show notifications, select View apps.
- Find the Android app that is producing the duplicate.
- Choose the option that disables that app’s forwarded notifications. Phone Link may also present this as Turn off notifications from phone for the individual app.
Depending on the current Phone Link build, the per-app choices can include showing the item in the Phone Link feed, showing it in the feed plus a Windows banner, or disabling the forwarded notification. Select the disable option when the desktop client should remain the only computer alert.
Keep other phone notifications working
The setting is per app. Turning off forwarding for one messaging or calendar app does not, by itself, disable forwarding for every Android app. Review the list after changing the setting so that only the noisy source is filtered.
Grant notification permission if Phone Link has no feed
Phone Link must have permission to read Android notifications before its app list can work.

- When Android prompts you, allow Link to Windows notification access.
- Return to Phone Link > Settings > Features > Notifications and open View apps again.
If you do not want any phone notifications on the computer, use Phone Link’s individual app controls rather than revoking access for every app. Revoking access removes the entire mirrored feed, not just one duplicate.
What each Phone Link choice means
The feed-only choice keeps the item inside Phone Link without creating the normal Windows banner. Feed plus banner allows both the Phone Link view and a Windows alert. The disable choice blocks forwarding for that Android app while leaving the app’s phone notification and any independent desktop-client alert alone. These controls apply to the forwarded source, not to the Android app’s own behavior.
Stop the phone copy in Android
Use Android’s system controls when you want the app silenced on the phone itself. This also removes the source notification that Phone Link would mirror; it is not a computer-only filter.

Disable an app or selected categories
- Open Settings on the Android phone.
- Tap Notifications.
- Open App notifications.
- Select the app.
- Turn off all notifications, or disable only the categories you do not want, such as message alerts, group messages, calls, or promotions.
Android versions and manufacturers use different labels and layouts. If these names do not match, search the Settings app for Notifications. You can also touch and hold an existing notification to open that notification’s settings directly.
Understand the trade-off
An Android-level change affects the phone. It may also remove the corresponding Phone Link alert because there is no longer an Android notification to forward. Choose this route only when you are comfortable losing the phone alert as well as the mirrored computer copy.
Category controls are useful when only one class of alert is troublesome. For example, you can leave direct messages enabled while disabling promotional or group categories, if the app exposes those categories. Category names and available switches vary by phone manufacturer and Android version, so do not assume every app offers the same granularity.
Stop a desktop app’s native notification
If one alert remains after Phone Link forwarding is disabled, the remaining alert is probably generated by the desktop client. Open that application’s settings and look for Notifications, Alerts, Sounds, or Messages. Turn off banners, sounds, badges, or the specific conversation type that is duplicated.
Many services manage notification preferences inside the app, while the operating system can also override them. Check both layers when necessary:

- Disable the relevant notification type, or mute the conversation, channel, or workspace causing the second alert.
- In Windows system settings, review the app’s notification permission if the client still displays banners.
- Send a test message or wait for the next event while Phone Link remains in the configuration you selected.
Conversation muting can synchronize
Some services synchronize a mute choice across devices. WhatsApp’s Help Center guidance says muting a chat on the phone also mutes it on WhatsApp Web and Desktop, and Windows notification settings can affect WhatsApp notification sounds. Because behavior depends on the current app version and account configuration, verify the result in the app rather than assuming a mute is limited to the device where you set it.

Common duplicate-notification combinations
Phone alert plus desktop-client alert
This is the most common pattern. Disable forwarding for the app in Phone Link if you want to keep the phone alert and the desktop client. Alternatively, leave Phone Link enabled and turn off the desktop client’s native notifications if you prefer one mirrored alert.
Two alerts that both appear to come from Phone Link
Check whether a desktop client is installed and signed in, even if its icon is less obvious. Disconnect Phone Link temporarily and trigger a test event. If one banner still appears, it is desktop-native; change that client’s settings. If both disappear, inspect Phone Link’s app list and reconnect notification permission.
Phone alert plus a different cross-device utility
Do not apply Phone Link’s menu path to another utility. Open the other utility’s notification or device-sharing settings and disable forwarding for the individual app. Keep Android notification settings unchanged if you still want the alert on the phone.
How dismissal behaves
For a mirrored Phone Link item, dismissing the notification on the PC also dismisses the mirrored notification on Android, and dismissing it on Android removes the mirrored item on the PC. This synchronization applies to the mirrored item itself.
It does not guarantee that a separate desktop-native alert will disappear. If the desktop client generated a second notification, disable or mute that client’s alert source; dismissing the Phone Link copy does not prevent the client from creating another one later.
Troubleshoot when duplicates continue
Recheck which source is still enabled
- Open Phone Link’s Settings > Features > Notifications > View apps and confirm the affected app is disabled there.
- Open the desktop client and confirm its own banners or sounds are disabled.
- On Android, check the app’s notification categories if the phone itself is also showing an alert you did not expect.
Reset Link to Windows notification access
When notification synchronization is missing, incomplete, or behaving inconsistently, Microsoft recommends toggling Link to Windows notification access off and on again in Android settings. This is a synchronization recovery step, not the normal way to remove a duplicate. After re-enabling access, return to Phone Link and review the per-app list again.

Do not treat hidden sensitive notifications as duplicates
On Android 15, Phone Link may hide sensitive notifications, including certain verification codes. If an alert appears on the phone but not on the computer, review privacy and sensitive-notification behavior instead of disabling sources that are working correctly.

Test after every single change
Change one layer at a time and trigger a new event. If you disable Android notifications, Phone Link forwarding, and desktop notifications simultaneously, you cannot tell which setting solved the problem or which one removed an alert you still needed.
Check account and device state
Make sure the desktop client and Phone Link are connected to the accounts you are testing. A shared family computer, a second Windows profile, or a web session can create an alert that is not controlled by the app window you first checked. Close or sign out of additional clients temporarily during diagnosis, then restore only the sessions you need.
A practical setup for one alert per event
- Decide where you want the notification: phone, computer, or both.
- If the phone and desktop client should both alert you, disable only Phone Link forwarding for that app.
- If the computer should alert you only through Phone Link, keep forwarding enabled and disable the desktop client’s native banners.
- If you want no alerts for that app, disable its Android notifications and its desktop-client notifications.
- Send a test event and verify the result on every device where the account is signed in.
- Recheck after an app update, because notification categories and in-app mute behavior can change between versions.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Revoking all notification access: this removes the whole Phone Link feed when you only needed to filter one app.
- Silencing Android first: this hides the phone alert and may remove a useful mirrored alert when a Phone Link filter would have been enough.
- Assuming a mute is local: some services synchronize chat mutes across phone, web, and desktop.
- Testing by dismissing only: dismissal clears a mirrored item but does not stop an independent client from generating the next alert.
- Changing several layers together: make one change, trigger a new event, and record what happened.
Key limitations to remember
- Phone Link’s settings affect forwarded Android notifications, not alerts independently created by desktop software.
- Android notification menus differ by version and manufacturer.
- App-level mute settings may synchronize across devices for some services.
- Mirrored Phone Link dismissals synchronize; independent desktop alerts may not.
- No paid service or extra hardware is required for these fixes.

Does dismissing a notification on Windows dismiss it on Android?
For a mirrored Phone Link notification, yes: Microsoft says dismissal synchronizes in both directions. A separate desktop-native alert is independent, so dismissing the mirrored item does not stop the desktop client from creating another alert.
What if I use a phone-to-PC utility other than Phone Link?
Use that utility’s own per-app notification controls. The Phone Link menu path and behavior do not automatically apply to another synchronization service. Keep Android settings unchanged if you want the phone notification to remain.

Should I reset Link to Windows notification access?
Toggle Link to Windows notification access off and on only when synchronization is missing or inconsistent. It can restore a broken feed, but it is not the normal fix for duplicates. Afterward, revisit Phone Link’s per-app notification list.
