End the old broadcast in YouTube’s Live Control Room and stop its encoder from sending video. YouTube counts broadcasts that are still active—not saved archives—toward its simultaneous-stream limits: up to 10 active streams per channel and 3 per stream key. Reaching either limit prevents you from starting another stream.
End the broadcast that is still live
If you stream with an encoder
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room.
- Open the active event and select End Stream.
- Wait until YouTube shows that the event has stopped, then stop the encoder or its outgoing feed. YouTube’s encoder guidance says to end the stream and stop sending content from the encoder.
- Check that the old event is no longer active before trying to start the new broadcast.
If you stream from a webcam
Select End Stream at the bottom of the webcam streaming interface.
If you stream from a mobile device
Use the end control in the app or interface you used to start the broadcast. The specific mobile instructions are not established here, so follow the control shown for your current streaming method.

Know which limit the error refers to

Changing or deleting an archive is not the same as ending a stream
A completed broadcast may be saved as an archive. YouTube’s archive-management instructions direct creators to YouTube Studio > Content > Live, where a saved video’s visibility can be changed or the video deleted. Those are actions on the recording; use the live event’s end control to stop a broadcast that is still running.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived. The archive’s presence or visibility does not establish that the live event is still active.
If the active-stream error remains
- Return to Live Control Room and verify that the old event is no longer shown as active.
- Look for other active broadcasts on the channel; the channel-wide cap applies even if they use different keys.
- Check the key used by the new stream and whether other active streams are using that same key.
- Read the error wording carefully. A daily-creation-limit message is different from an active-stream-cap message.
- Retry after confirming the old event has stopped. YouTube does not publish a guaranteed time for when an ended stream’s slot becomes available, so do not rely on a specific wait period.
- If the message persists despite confirming the relevant broadcasts have ended, use YouTube Help for account-specific troubleshooting.
