If an HDR calibration profile seems to reset after a Windows 11 reboot, first check whether it disappeared, lost its default assignment, or only looks different when HDR is active. Those are different symptoms, and Microsoft’s guidance does not identify one universal cause for them. Start at Settings > System > Display > Color profile, select the affected display, and check whether the intended profile is still listed and set as its default.

Find out what “resetting” means

Before changing profiles, note exactly what happens after restart. A missing profile, a profile that remains available but is no longer selected, and a picture that changes when HDR is enabled point to different checks.

What you see What it may mean Next check
The profile is absent from the list It may have been removed or may not be present in the current profile list. Microsoft’s documentation does not establish why it is absent. Check the selected display’s Color profile settings. If necessary, recreate a profile with the appropriate calibration tool.
The profile is still listed but is not the default The profile’s default assignment may have changed. Select the profile and choose Set profile.
The profile seems ineffective only with HDR or Advanced Color active Color behavior can differ while Advanced Color is active; that does not by itself mean the profile was deleted. Check the current HDR state and whether the change follows enabling or disabling HDR.
HDR streaming video looks wrong on a built-in screen You may be using the wrong calibration feature. Use Windows’ built-in Display calibration for HDR video, which is for built-in displays and streaming HDR video.

Check the profile assigned to the affected display

  1. Open Settings > System > Display > Color profile.
  2. Select the display that shows the problem. If more than one display is connected, verify that you have selected the monitor whose profile is resetting.
  3. Look for the intended profile in that display’s list. If it is present but not active as the default, select it and choose Set profile.
  4. Restart Windows, return to the same display’s Color profile settings, and check separately whether the profile remains listed and whether it remains the default.

Microsoft documents selecting a display, removing a profile, and setting a profile as the default in Manage color profiles in Windows. Reassigning a profile is a useful check, but it does not establish why the assignment changed.

Use the calibration feature that matches the display

External HDR monitor: Windows HDR Calibration

For an HDR-capable external display, use the Windows HDR Calibration app. Its workflow uses three test patterns and slider adjustments to calibrate the display. Microsoft’s documented requirements include Windows 11, an HDR-capable display with HDR enabled, full-screen use of the app, a qualifying graphics processor, and WDDM 2.7 or later.

Built-in screen: Display calibration for HDR video

Do not confuse the HDR Calibration app with Windows’ built-in Display calibration for HDR video feature. Microsoft says that feature applies only to built-in displays and streaming HDR video; it cannot calibrate an external monitor. If the problem is on a laptop’s built-in screen while watching HDR video, use that built-in calibration path rather than treating it as an external-display calibration tool. See Microsoft’s video playback settings guidance.

Rerun calibration after changing the display setup

If you added or replaced a display, changed the arrangement, or otherwise changed the setup, rerun Windows HDR Calibration for the relevant display. Microsoft advises: “Run this app whenever you change your display setup (for example, add a new display or replace an existing one).” This recommendation concerns a changed display setup; it is not a guarantee that recalibration will fix a profile persistence problem.

Remove a stale profile only when you have identified it

If you find a profile you no longer want, Microsoft documents removing an app-created HDR Calibration profile through Color Management. Confirm that you have identified the correct display and profile before removing it. Deleting a profile is not a documented universal fix for a profile that vanishes or loses its default assignment after reboot.

If the profile still changes after reboot

Record the details that distinguish a machine-specific issue: Windows version and build, graphics processor and driver version, monitor model, connection and display arrangement, and whether the symptom also occurs after sleep or after toggling HDR. Note whether the profile is missing, no longer the default, or only appears ineffective under HDR. Microsoft’s public guidance explains profile management and behavior changes with Advanced Color, but does not identify a universal reboot-reset cause or document registry edits or scheduled-task changes as a fix for this symptom.
