First determine what is actually failing: the phone may be switching its hotspot off, a connected device may be dropping Wi‑Fi, or the hotspot may remain connected while mobile internet is unavailable. On a Pixel, disable Turn off hotspot automatically; Google documents a 10-minute shutdown when no device is connected. On a Samsung Galaxy, increase the inactivity interval in Mobile Hotspot’s advanced settings. If a device is still connected when the failure occurs, investigate Wi‑Fi compatibility, mobile data, carrier tethering rules and data limits instead of changing an idle timeout.
Identify the failure before changing settings
Watch both ends of the connection during the next failure. On the phone, open the hotspot control and note whether the hotspot switch has changed to off. On the laptop, tablet or second phone, note whether the saved Wi‑Fi network disappears, changes to “disconnected,” or remains connected but reports no internet. Those observations point to different fixes.
| What you see | Most likely category | First check |
|---|---|---|
| The hotspot switch turns off, especially when nobody is connected | Automatic inactivity shutdown | Disable or lengthen the phone’s “turn off when no device is connected” setting |
| The hotspot switch stays on but a client leaves Wi‑Fi | Client-side Wi‑Fi drop or device/firmware compatibility issue | Reconnect the client and check whether the phone supports Wi‑Fi and hotspot operation together |
| The client remains connected to the hotspot but web pages do not load | Mobile-data, carrier or tethering-data problem | Check mobile data, Data Saver, carrier tethering support and remaining tethering allowance |
An idle timeout only addresses the first row. It does not prove or repair a hotspot that shuts down while an active client is using it.

- Open Settings.
- Tap Network & internet.
- Tap Hotspot & tethering.
- Tap Wi‑Fi hotspot.
- Turn Turn off hotspot automatically off.
Google describes this as a battery-saving behavior. Its Wi‑Fi troubleshooting guidance says a Pixel hotspot turns off after 10 minutes with no connected device. That figure is Pixel guidance, not a universal Android rule; other manufacturers can expose a different interval or a differently named control.
If the Pixel hotspot is already on
When the switch is on but a client cannot join, turn the hotspot off, wait a moment, and turn it on again. Then verify the network name and password on the client. This basic reset is useful for a transient hotspot service state, but it does not change the automatic-off policy.
Check Data Saver
Google states that Data Saver must be off for Wi‑Fi tethering. Open Settings > Network & internet > Data Saver and disable it before testing the hotspot again. The exact menu can vary with Android version, so use the Settings search field for “Data Saver” if the item is not immediately visible.

Some phones cannot keep a Wi‑Fi connection and provide a Wi‑Fi hotspot at the same time. Google gives the Pixel 7a as an example of a device with this limitation. If enabling the hotspot makes the phone’s own Wi‑Fi disconnect, that may be a capability constraint rather than a defective hotspot. Use mobile data for the shared connection, or choose USB or Bluetooth tethering when those methods meet your needs.

Increase the idle interval on a Samsung Galaxy
Samsung Galaxy phones provide an inactivity timeout in Mobile Hotspot’s advanced settings. The United States support path is:
- Open Settings.
- Tap Connections.
- Tap Mobile Hotspot and Tethering.
- Tap Mobile Hotspot.
- Tap Information, then Advanced.
- Open Turn off when no device connected for.
- Select a longer interval offered by your phone, or the option that keeps the hotspot available longest.
The labels and nesting can differ by Galaxy model, One UI release and region. If the path does not match, search Settings for Mobile Hotspot, timeout or turn off when no device connected. This control is specifically an inactivity timer. It does not establish why a hotspot would stop while a device remains connected, so use the active-connection checks below for that symptom.
When a connected device keeps disconnecting
Keep the phone’s hotspot screen open while reproducing the problem. If the hotspot toggle remains enabled after the laptop drops, the phone did not perform an idle shutdown. The client may have lost its Wi‑Fi association, or the phone may still be sharing locally while its upstream mobile connection has failed.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsReconnect and isolate the client
- On the client, disconnect from the hotspot and join it again using the current password.
- Test a second client if one is available. If only one laptop or tablet drops, focus on that client’s Wi‑Fi adapter, saved network profile or power policy rather than the phone’s idle timer.
- Check whether the phone’s hotspot screen still lists the client as connected. A client that disappears from that list has lost its Wi‑Fi link; a client that remains listed but cannot browse points more strongly to upstream internet or carrier service.
These observations are diagnostic, not a guarantee of a particular hardware cause. Android menus, Wi‑Fi chipsets and carrier implementations vary by model and software version.

Retest after a hotspot toggle
Google’s Pixel troubleshooting sequence includes checking hotspot status and toggling the hotspot off and on. Perform that reset, then reconnect the client. If the failure returns only while no device is connected, revisit the automatic-off setting. If it returns during active use, record the phone model, Android or firmware version, client model and carrier; those details are needed for model-specific diagnosis.
When the hotspot stays connected but there is no internet
A Wi‑Fi connection to the phone does not by itself prove that the phone can reach the internet. Samsung’s troubleshooting guidance specifically notes that other devices can connect to a Galaxy hotspot but have no internet when tethering data has been exhausted.
Check the phone’s mobile data
- Turn off Wi‑Fi on the phone temporarily and open a web page over mobile data. If the phone itself cannot browse, the hotspot cannot provide internet until mobile service is restored.
- Confirm that mobile data is enabled and that the phone has usable cellular coverage.
- Check the carrier account for a tethering allowance or a plan restriction. A general data allowance and a separate tethering allowance may be treated differently by a carrier.
Check Data Saver and carrier support
On Pixel, Data Saver must be disabled for Wi‑Fi tethering. On any Android phone, the carrier must permit tethering for the SIM and plan. Samsung advises checking the SIM, carrier tethering rules and remaining data when a connected device cannot reach the internet. If the allowance is exhausted or tethering is blocked, changing the hotspot timeout will not restore access.

Separate DNS or website issues from a dead upstream link
Try more than one website on the client and compare the result with the phone’s own mobile-data connection. A single site failing is different from every site failing. If all sites fail on the client while the phone browses normally, reconnect the client and verify that it received an address from the hotspot; if the problem persists, the carrier’s tethering service or the client’s network configuration may require support from the carrier or device maker.

Use USB or Bluetooth tethering when Wi‑Fi is unreliable
Android supports sharing a mobile connection through Wi‑Fi, USB or Bluetooth. A different transport can avoid a flaky Wi‑Fi radio or a client that repeatedly drops the wireless association, but it does not bypass carrier tethering rules or a depleted tethering allowance.
USB tethering
- Connect the phone to the client with a cable that supports data, not charging only.
- Open the phone’s Hotspot & tethering settings and enable USB tethering when the option becomes available.
- Wait for the client to install or select the phone’s network interface, then test a web page.
Connector and host compatibility matters: USB‑C, Micro‑USB, adapters and the client operating system must all support the connection. Google’s Pixel help notes that Mac computers cannot use USB tethering with Android, so a Mac user should confirm support before relying on this method.
Bluetooth tethering
Pair the phone and client in Bluetooth settings, then enable Bluetooth tethering under Hotspot & tethering. Bluetooth generally trades speed for a lower-power, short-range link and is useful only when both devices support the required profiles. Google notes that Bluetooth tethering is not compatible with Macs running macOS Monterey or later; choose another method for those Macs.
Choose the method that fits the failure
| Method | What it changes | Important requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Wi‑Fi hotspot | Shares the connection wirelessly with multiple clients | Client Wi‑Fi compatibility and an appropriate idle-timeout setting |
| USB tethering | Uses a wired network link instead of hotspot Wi‑Fi | A suitable data cable and compatible phone/client operating systems |
| Bluetooth tethering | Uses a paired Bluetooth link | Bluetooth tethering support on both devices; macOS Monterey and later Macs are not compatible according to Google |
Keep a long tethering session stable
Provide power, but do not confuse charging with a timeout fix
Google recommends plugging devices in while tethering to conserve battery. A charger or power bank can prevent the phone from running out of power during a long session. Charging does not disable an automatic idle timeout, and it cannot compensate for a carrier block or exhausted tethering data.

Keep the phone in a usable cellular location
The hotspot can remain switched on while the mobile signal changes or disappears. Place the phone where it has reliable cellular reception and avoid enclosing it in a location that causes overheating. If the client remains associated but internet access repeatedly stops, compare the phone’s own mobile-data performance at the same time.
Do not apply universal “battery optimization” claims
Android manufacturers implement power management differently. The documented Pixel and Galaxy controls above address inactivity, but the supplied official guidance does not establish screen locking, battery optimization or a single universal Android timeout as the cause of every disconnect. Treat those as model-specific possibilities only after identifying the exact phone, software version and failure state.
A model-and-carrier troubleshooting sequence
Use this order so that each test answers a different question and does not undo a useful observation.
- Observe the failure. Note whether the phone’s hotspot switch turns off, whether the client leaves Wi‑Fi, or whether only internet access disappears.
- Apply the matching idle setting. On Pixel, disable Turn off hotspot automatically. On Galaxy, lengthen Turn off when no device connected for. On another Android make, search Settings for “hotspot,” “timeout” or “turn off automatically”; the manufacturer controls the label and behavior.
- Confirm prerequisites. Turn off Data Saver, enable mobile data, and verify that the SIM and plan permit tethering.
- Retest with one client. Toggle the hotspot off and on, connect one device and watch whether the phone still lists it when the failure occurs.
- Test a second client or transport. A second Wi‑Fi client helps isolate a client-specific fault. USB or Bluetooth tethering can show whether the problem is limited to Wi‑Fi, subject to compatibility.
- Check allowances and support. Confirm remaining tethering data. If the hotspot turns off while an active client is connected and the relevant timeout is not responsible, collect the phone model, Android or firmware version, carrier, client model and exact timing before contacting the carrier or manufacturer.
Common mistakes that make the problem look worse
- Changing an idle timeout for an active-session failure: the timeout applies when no device is connected; it is not an all-purpose disconnect repair.
- Assuming every Android phone uses Pixel’s 10-minute rule: Google’s 10-minute figure is documented for Pixel and should not be generalized to other makes.
- Ignoring the phone’s own internet connection: a client can be connected locally while the phone has no mobile-data service.
- Continuing to retry after tethering data is exhausted: a carrier allowance or plan restriction must be resolved with the carrier or account, not with hotspot settings.
- Using a charge-only cable for USB tethering: USB sharing requires a suitable data cable and compatible host devices.
- Expecting Wi‑Fi and hotspot to coexist on every model: some phones, including Google’s Pixel 7a example, cannot keep both active simultaneously.
What information support will need
If the documented settings do not solve the issue, provide precise reproduction details instead of only saying “the hotspot disconnects.” Include the phone make and model, Android or firmware version, carrier and plan type, whether the hotspot switch changed to off, whether a client was actively connected, the client’s operating system, whether the phone itself could browse over mobile data, and whether USB or Bluetooth behaved differently. Also note whether the problem occurs after the same idle period every time or at apparently random times. This separates a manufacturer timeout from a client Wi‑Fi issue, carrier enforcement or loss of cellular service.
The Bottom Line
Disable the Pixel automatic-off control or lengthen the Galaxy inactivity interval only when the hotspot is shutting down with no connected device. For active disconnects, check the phone’s mobile data, Data Saver, carrier tethering permission and remaining allowance, then test another client or USB/Bluetooth tethering. A hotspot that remains on but has no internet is a different problem from an idle timeout.
