To reduce Fire TV data collection, change two separate sets of controls: the television’s device and app-usage settings, and Alexa’s request-history settings. On Fire TV, go to Settings > Preferences > Privacy Settings. In the Alexa app, go to More > Alexa Privacy to review or delete voice recordings, transcripts, and typed requests. A microphone-off button on supported hands-free models can stop that device from recording room audio, but it does not erase account history or disable voice requests made with the remote.
What Fire TV can collect, and which control affects it
Fire TV privacy controls are divided by data type. A setting on the television governs device and third-party app usage information. Alexa Privacy governs requests made through Alexa, including requests spoken to Fire TV and requests typed into Alexa interfaces. These controls do not form one universal “stop all collection” switch.

Amazon says Fire TV privacy choices are device-specific. If you own more than one Fire TV device, check each one rather than assuming a change made on one television follows the others.

Use the television’s own settings for data about navigation and app activity. The wording and placement can vary by model, software version, and region, so use the labels shown on your screen if they differ slightly.

Open the Fire TV privacy controls
- From the Fire TV home screen, open Settings.
- Select Preferences.
- Open Privacy Settings.
- Read the descriptions beside each available control before changing it. The settings may include device-usage data, app-usage data, and, on some smart TVs, over-the-air viewing data.
Disable third-party app usage data
- In Privacy Settings, select Collect App Usage Data.
- Set the option to Off or choose the opt-out wording displayed by your device.
- Confirm the change if Fire TV asks for confirmation, then return to the privacy screen and verify that the status remains off.
Amazon describes this control as covering third-party app open, close, and duration information. It is not a command to each individual app to erase its own records, and it does not necessarily cover data an app sends under that app’s separate privacy notice.
Review device-usage data choices
The same privacy page may provide a device-usage setting. Amazon’s Fire TV privacy FAQ says that turning the relevant setting off stops processing of the specified device-usage data for customized marketing offers and for improving products and features. That opt-out does not stop every process needed to provide Fire TV functions. Data required to operate device features may still be processed.
It also does not control all information associated with Amazon services, such as activity connected with Prime Video, and it is not a universal opt-out from interest-based advertising. Treat the description on your particular Fire TV as the boundary of what the switch changes.

Opt out of over-the-air viewing data when available
On a smart television with Fire TV built in, look for Over-the-air Viewing Data under Settings > Preferences > Privacy Settings. This option concerns viewing data from antenna content. It may not appear on a Fire TV streaming stick, an external box, or a television model that does not expose that control.
Delete Alexa voice recordings, transcripts, and typed requests
Fire TV’s voice features can send Alexa requests to Amazon. To manage the resulting history, use Alexa Privacy rather than the Fire TV device-usage switch.

Use the Alexa mobile app
- Open the Alexa app signed in to the Amazon account used with Fire TV.
- Select More.
- Choose Alexa Privacy.
- Open the history or data-management area. Depending on the app version, you may see requests grouped into chats.
- Select an item or chat to inspect the available audio, transcript, typed request, and response details.
- Delete the individual item or the available group of items, then repeat for other chats if you want a broader cleanup.
Alexa Privacy is also the place to manage the history-retention choice. Menu labels can change as Amazon updates the app, so select the option that explicitly refers to Alexa history, recordings, or retention.
What the Alexa history view contains
The history tools can include the audio recording of a spoken request, the text transcript generated from it, a request typed into an Alexa interface, and the response associated with the interaction. A request made with the Alexa Voice Remote is part of this Alexa history process even though the remote, rather than a hands-free microphone array, captured the speech.

Alexa offers retention choices that have different results. Select the option that matches whether you want automatic cleanup, maximum history reduction, or continued access to past requests.

The three- and 18-month periods are product retention settings, not measurements from an independent study. If you choose not to save recordings, do not interpret that as immediate deletion of every representation of a request: the transcript and typed-request window still applies.
Understand chat-based retention
Alexa may group related requests into a chat. For the no-recordings option, Amazon measures the 30-day transcript and typed-request period from the last interaction in that chat. A later request in the same chat can therefore affect when the 30-day period ends. You can delete the material sooner from Alexa Privacy.

Stop a hands-free Fire TV from recording room audio
Some Fire TV smart TVs and other hands-free models have a physical microphone on/off button. When that button is switched off, Amazon says the microphones are disconnected: the device cannot record and stream audio to the cloud, even if you say the wake word.
- Find the microphone symbol or microphone on/off switch on the television or Fire TV device.
- Move it to the off position.
- Look for the device’s indicator, such as a light or on-screen status, confirming that the microphones are disabled.
- To use hands-free Alexa again, return the switch to the on position.
This is a hardware control, not an account-history control. It does not delete recordings already stored in Alexa Privacy, and it does not prevent a request spoken into the Alexa Voice Remote.
Why the remote still works
The Alexa Voice Remote has its own microphone. Pressing the remote’s voice button sends the request when you release or finish speaking according to the remote’s behavior. Amazon indicates that a blue light bar appears on the TV while a remote request is being recorded to stream to the cloud. Turning off a hands-free microphone array does not disable this remote path.
What these settings do not cover
Text typed directly into Fire TV search
Alexa history controls are documented for Alexa voice recordings, transcripts, and typed Alexa requests. The available documentation does not establish that they erase every text search entered directly into the Fire TV interface. If you use the on-screen keyboard, do not assume that deleting Alexa history removes search records created by the Fire TV interface.
Records held by individual apps
Turning off Collect App Usage Data addresses the Fire TV data category Amazon describes. A streaming, shopping, or social app may keep its own searches, watch history, profiles, or diagnostics under its separate account and privacy settings. Open the app’s settings or privacy notice to manage those records.

Amazon-service activity and advertising data
The Fire TV device-usage opt-out is narrower than a complete Amazon-account privacy reset. Amazon distinguishes device-function processing, Amazon-service data, and interest-based advertising data. A Fire TV switch cannot be represented as stopping all of those categories.
Deletion is not always instant
When you delete Alexa history, Amazon starts a secure deletion process. Completion time can vary. Related records may remain temporarily, and some information may be outside Amazon’s cloud, supplied by a third party, or retained in de-identified form. Therefore, a deleted item disappearing from the Alexa Privacy view is not a promise that every technically related copy vanishes at the same moment.
If you need the smallest practical history, first delete existing items in Alexa Privacy, then select the shortest automatic-retention choice or the no-saved-recordings option. Keep in mind the separate 30-day text period under the no-recordings choice.

Because Fire TV privacy controls are device-specific, use this checklist for each television, stick, or box:
- Open Settings > Preferences > Privacy Settings.
- Check Collect App Usage Data and set it according to your preference.
- Review the device-usage option and its description.
- On a smart TV with an antenna, review Over-the-air Viewing Data.
- If the device has a microphone switch, confirm its physical position.
- In the Alexa app, verify that you are using the correct Amazon account, then review Alexa Privacy history and retention.
Changing Alexa retention is account-related, while the Fire TV privacy switches and microphone hardware state apply to individual devices. Do not use one as evidence that the other has changed.

Troubleshoot missing or different menu options
The Privacy Settings menu is not where the instructions indicate
Fire TV menus vary with model, software version, and region. Start at Settings, then look for Preferences and a page named Privacy or Privacy Settings. Use the on-screen search feature if your model provides one. If a control is absent, it may not be supported for that device or region.
Collect App Usage Data is already off
Leave it off and separately review the device-usage and over-the-air options. These are different data categories; disabling one does not automatically disable the others.
Alexa history shows requests after you turned off the microphone
A microphone switch only affects audio captured by that hands-free device while the switch is off. Requests made earlier, requests made with the remote, and requests from other Alexa devices can still appear in the account’s history. Review the timestamp and device information in Alexa Privacy before deleting the items you do not want retained.

You cannot delete a request immediately
Check that the Alexa app is online and signed in to the account associated with the request. Try the deletion again from the item or chat view. If it disappears from the history list, allow for Amazon’s secure deletion process to complete rather than expecting every related record to vanish instantly.
Privacy and feature trade-offs
Reducing history can affect convenience. Alexa uses past interactions for features and personalization, and Amazon notes that deleting Alexa data can affect personalization and capabilities, including Voice ID. If household members rely on Voice ID or customized responses, test those features after deleting history or changing retention.
A practical privacy-first configuration is to turn off the Fire TV data-collection options offered on each device, disable the hands-free microphones when you do not use wake-word access, delete existing Alexa history, and choose no saved recordings or the three-month automatic deletion option. A convenience-first configuration may leave hands-free access and longer history enabled while still using manual deletion for sensitive requests. Neither configuration removes app-specific records or every category of Amazon-service data.
