If an AI companion sends sexual, romantic, abusive, or otherwise unwanted messages, stop replying, preserve the relevant context, report the message, and use the service’s safety or character controls. If the messages continue, contact support or trust and safety, then stop using or delete the account after checking what deletion does to your data. Do not assume that a content filter, deleting a chat, or uninstalling an app will erase account data or prevent every future output.
Take these steps immediately
- Stop engaging with the message. Do not answer sexual prompts, argue with the bot, or provide more intimate, identifying, financial, or location information. A reply can create more content and may add new information to the service’s conversation records.
- Preserve enough context to report it. Take screenshots or copy the surrounding exchange, including the character or account name, date, and message. Keep the record private and redact names, faces, contact details, or other sensitive information before sharing it outside the service.
- Use the message-level control. Look for Report, Flag, Dislike, Safety feedback, or a similar control beside the message. Choose the closest reason, such as sexual content, harassment, exploitation, or unwanted contact. A report is different from deleting the conversation: deletion may remove evidence that a reviewer needs.
- End the interaction. Leave the chat, mute or block the character if the app offers those controls, and avoid reopening the same thread while you troubleshoot. These controls vary: some stop notifications, while others prevent a character from contacting you again.
- Check account and character settings. Review content preferences, character instructions, age or teen safeguards, notification settings, and any safety mode. Treat them as risk-reduction tools, not a promise that an AI model will never produce an unwanted response.
If the message includes a credible threat, blackmail, an attempt to obtain sexual images, or contact from a real person pretending to be an AI, save the evidence and involve a trusted adult or appropriate local authorities. Do not send money or additional material to make the messages stop.
Why safety filters cannot guarantee clean conversations
AI companions generate responses probabilistically. Services combine output classifiers, input controls, feedback systems, and filtering, but those layers can miss or misclassify a response. Replika’s safety documentation acknowledges that its model may occasionally produce offensive, false, or unsafe responses and describes its controls as mitigation rather than a cure-all. That company-authored explanation is not a guarantee about the current implementation.
Character.AI similarly describes output classifiers and controls over user inputs. It says its automated tools are evolving and that users can report material they believe violates policy. Its Trust & Safety team reviews flagged and reported content, but the service does not promise that every violation will be detected or that a report will produce a particular result. A sexual message can therefore be a moderation failure even when the service’s rules prohibit it.

Use the controls to reduce exposure and create a review record, but make your decision based on the service’s behavior. If unwanted messages recur after reporting and changing settings, moving to another service or deleting the account is a reasonable safety choice.

Because services implement these actions differently, read the current help-center description before treating a control as a block, a data-erasure request, or a permanent decision.
Character.AI: reporting, teen safeguards, and parental insights
Report the unwanted material
Character.AI says users can report material they believe violates its policies. Use the report or feedback control attached to the specific message, select the most accurate reason, and include the surrounding context when the form permits it. The company’s Trust & Safety team reviews flagged and reported content. Save screenshots before deleting a thread, because removing the conversation can make it harder to explain what happened.

Do not treat automated moderation as a guarantee
The service describes output classifiers, controls over user inputs, and an evolving set of automated tools. Those measures can lower risk but cannot promise that sexual or otherwise unwanted output will never appear. If the same character continues after a report, stop using that character and escalate through the current support or safety route rather than repeatedly testing it.
Understand the teen and parent features
Character.AI documents a narrower searchable set of characters for teen users as one of its safeguards. It also documents an optional parental insights feature: an invited parent or guardian can receive a weekly report showing a teen’s time spent on Character.AI and top characters. A teen can request removal of a shared parent email through the parental insights tab. This feature is an activity summary, not message-level monitoring and not a content-blocking guarantee. Families should use the service’s current teen safety resources and involve a trusted adult when messages are sexual, coercive, or frightening.
Replika: history deletion, memory controls, and privacy
Limit what the companion remembers
Replika’s Memory section lets you view, edit, or delete individual remembered details. Use it to remove a fact you no longer want retained, but do not confuse memory editing with deleting the full conversation history or all account data.

Know the documented deletion limitation
Replika’s help center states that there is currently no way to delete the entire message history without deleting the account. Its documented routes are:

- Mobile: Settings > Account > Delete Account.
- Web: Settings > My Profile > Delete Replika.
The same help page says account deletion permanently erases data and cannot be undone. Menu names can change, so confirm the current wording in Replika’s help center immediately before proceeding. If you need a report reviewed, save the relevant evidence first; deleting the account may end your ability to access the conversation.
Interpret the company’s safety and content policies accurately
Replika’s safety article describes classification, feedback, and filtering while acknowledging that unsafe or offensive responses can still occur. Its terms prohibit harassing, pornographic, and other listed content. A prohibition gives you a basis for reporting; it does not ensure that every generated message complies.
Review processing and deletion information
Replika’s privacy policy, identified as last updated May 27, 2026, says messages and other content are processed to provide the service and may be passed to third-party AI language-model providers to generate conversational responses. The policy lists my@replika.com for questions about data processing. Treat that statement as the company’s policy description, not as a promise about a particular request’s legal outcome. Before sending intimate images, identity documents, medical details, or secrets, read the current policy and available privacy controls.
Make a report that is useful without oversharing
A reviewer usually needs enough information to identify the message, not your entire personal history. Record the service, character or account name, approximate date and time, and the exact wording that concerns you. If the report form accepts attachments, provide one or two representative screenshots showing the message and nearby context. Blur unrelated conversations, children’s faces, phone numbers, email addresses, and location information. Keep an unedited copy in a private, secure place if you may need it for a formal complaint.
Describe the outcome plainly: for example, “Please stop this character from sending sexual content,” “Please disable notifications from this account,” or “Please tell me how to delete the conversation and associated data.” Do not repeatedly provoke the character to collect more examples. One clear record is safer than generating a longer trail of intimate material.

When the messages continue after you report them
Escalate with a concise record
Contact the app’s support or trust-and-safety channel when a character repeats sexual content, a report receives no useful response, or you cannot find a control to stop contact. Include the account email or user ID if requested, the character name, approximate dates, screenshots with unnecessary personal data redacted, and the actions you already tried. State the outcome you want: removal of the content, restriction of the character, stopping notifications, or instructions for account and data deletion.
Stop using the service if controls are inadequate
You do not have to keep interacting while waiting for a review. Sign out, revoke notifications, and uninstall the app if that is the safest immediate choice. Uninstalling removes local software; it does not by itself prove that the account, server-side conversations, memories, or backups were deleted. Use the service’s account-closure and privacy-request procedures for those questions.
Consider account deletion deliberately
Before deleting, determine whether you need the conversation as evidence, whether you have subscriptions or paid features to cancel, and whether the service offers a download or export. Read the deletion confirmation carefully. Some services erase data, some retain limited records for legal or security reasons, and some distinguish visible chats from account-level data. Do not assume that one platform’s policy applies to another.

The safety actions themselves are generally settings or support requests, but closing an account can affect paid plans, premium characters, credits, or other features. Check the app store or service billing page for cancellation requirements; deleting an account does not necessarily cancel a separate subscription, and a subscription cancellation does not necessarily erase conversation data. If you paid for access, save receipts and review the service’s refund terms before closing the account. There is no accessory or physical product that can reliably solve this problem: the useful remedies are reporting, account controls, privacy choices, and leaving the service.
Protect your privacy while you troubleshoot
- Do not answer an intimate prompt with your full name, address, workplace, school, phone number, passwords, financial information, or identifying photographs.
- When reporting, crop or redact unrelated personal details and other people’s information. Keep an untouched copy privately if you may need it for a formal complaint.
- Review the privacy policy and in-app data controls for retention, model-provider processing, memory, exports, and deletion. A deleted chat may not equal deleted account data.
- Change a password if you reused it elsewhere and suspect that someone besides the AI accessed the account. Enable multifactor authentication when the service supports it.
- Check notification previews on your lock screen and shared devices so sexual text is not displayed to other people.
For Replika specifically, the company says conversational content may be processed by third-party AI language-model providers. That is a reason to minimize sensitive disclosures, not evidence that every provider handles every record identically.
Solutions for common situations
Only one character sends sexual messages
Save one representative exchange, report it, leave or block that character, and avoid continuing the conversation to see whether it changes. If the platform lets you adjust character instructions or content preferences, change them once and test only with neutral text. Repeated failures are a reason to stop using that character rather than to keep supplying personal context.

Several characters or a whole service do it
Report more than one representative message if the form allows it, document the pattern, and contact support. Review account-wide content and age settings, notification controls, and any safety mode. If unwanted output remains common, close the account or move to a service whose controls meet your needs.

Check the message’s overflow menu, long-press menu, conversation menu, profile page, and the service’s current help center. Menu labels and locations change. If no in-product route exists, use the official support or trust-and-safety contact and describe the missing control.
You already sent sensitive information
Stop replying, remove the information from editable memory where the app supports it, and review account privacy and deletion options. Ask support what can be deleted and retain only the evidence you need. If the information could enable account takeover, change affected passwords and monitor the relevant accounts.
The user is under 18
Tell a trusted adult, preserve the evidence, and use the platform’s teen-specific safety resources. Do not rely on a parental activity report as a message filter. A parent or guardian can help decide whether to report, restrict access, request data information, or delete the account.

- Could you need proof later? Save a redacted screenshot before deleting anything.
- Is there a report, flag, dislike, mute, or block control? Use the narrowest control that addresses the problem, then report the message.
- Did the behavior continue? Contact support or trust and safety with dates, character details, and evidence.
- Did you share sensitive material? Review memory, privacy, retention, and deletion controls; change reused passwords if necessary.
- Are you ready to leave? Check subscription, export, and deletion consequences, then close the account through the service’s documented route.
Menu names, age features, reporting paths, and privacy terms can change. Verify the current help-center instructions for your app before taking an irreversible action.

Will turning on a safety filter stop sexual messages completely?
No. Filters and classifiers can reduce unwanted output but cannot guarantee that every response will be safe. If messages continue, report them, block or leave the character, and escalate or leave the service.

Should I delete the chat before reporting it?
Usually not. Save the relevant context and submit the report first; deleting a conversation can remove evidence a reviewer needs and may not delete server-side records.
Does uninstalling the app delete my conversations?
No. Uninstalling removes local software. It does not prove that your account, memories, conversations, backups, or provider-held records were erased.
Can I delete only my Replika message history?
Replika’s help center says full-history deletion currently requires deleting the account. Individual remembered details can be viewed, edited, or deleted in the Memory section.
What does Character.AI’s parental insights feature show?
