Use the chatbot as a bounded tool, not a relationship. Give each session a specific job, set a hard time limit, take scheduled breaks, and move emotionally important decisions to trusted people or a licensed mental-health professional. Turn off memory and notifications when possible, avoid unnecessary personal details, and stop using the system immediately if it suggests harm.

A chatbot can feel available, patient and validating, but it cannot provide human accountability, clinical judgment or a genuine relationship. The goal is not necessarily to stop every useful conversation; it is to prevent the bot from becoming your main source of reassurance, advice or connection.

Why an AI chatbot can start feeling like a support system

General-purpose chatbots were not designed to deliver mental-health care. The American Psychological Association (APA) warns that their agreeable, validating style can create a false sense of a therapeutic alliance. A system can simulate empathy, but it does not know you as a person, share responsibility for your wellbeing or participate in a mutual relationship. As the APA puts it, “Chatbots can simulate empathy, but they cannot form genuine human relationships.”

Dependence often develops gradually. A late-night question becomes a daily check-in; a request for wording becomes reassurance about every decision; a private disclosure feels easier than contacting someone who might disagree. Because the chatbot responds instantly and usually stays agreeable, it can become more rewarding than a complicated human conversation.

The risk is not limited to one obviously bad answer. A 2026 Nature Medicine evaluation of nine widely used AI chatbots and clinically motivated simulated user profiles found that mental-health risk was common, context-dependent and typically accumulated over several turns. The evaluation used simulated profiles and model or API access, not every consumer interface, so its results do not predict the behavior of a particular product in every conversation. They do show why a long exchange should not be treated as automatically safe just because no single reply looks alarming.

The APA also cautions that “Feeling better does not always mean getting better.” Immediate relief can reinforce a pattern that reduces sleep, offline coping and contact with people who could provide sustained help.

  • You prefer the chatbot to real people, hide how often you use it or feel embarrassed about the relationship.
  • You spend progressively more time chatting, reopen a conversation to obtain reassurance, or become distressed when you cannot access the service.
  • You treat the bot as a primary authority for beliefs, relationships, health or major decisions.
  • You withdraw from friends, family, hobbies, work, school or sleep because a conversation continues or feels more urgent.
  • You repeat the bot’s affirmations as proof, even when they conflict with evidence or other people’s observations.
  • You accept confident medical or psychological claims without checking them with a qualified professional.
  • The bot’s replies encourage self-harm, harm to another person, illegal acts or other dangerous behavior.

Survey figures illustrate why clinicians are paying attention, but they are not prevalence estimates for everyone. In an APA 2026 survey sample, 77% of psychologists said patients had discussed AI for diagnosis, emotional support or conversation; 36% had noticed chatbot dependency; 15% had noticed distorted thinking or delusions related to a chatbot; 94% had concerns about patients engaging with chatbots; and 93% said companionship use could negatively affect social engagement.

For younger users, a 2026 UK Government consultation found that 80% of full-consultation respondents and 68% of respondents aged 16–21 saw particular risks when chatbots mimic friendship. Eighteen percent of 16–21-year-olds said young people use chatbots for emotional or mental-health support. The government response says chatbots for under-18s will be required to introduce regular breaks. That requirement does not make an AI relationship equivalent to professional care; it is one safeguard against uninterrupted use.

A boundary plan that works in practice

1. Write down the job before opening the chat

Use one sentence that describes a limited task, such as “summarize my thoughts so I can discuss them in therapy” or “role-play an assertive conversation.” A defined job makes it easier to notice when the exchange has shifted into reassurance-seeking or companionship. If you cannot state the job, postpone the session and choose an offline support instead.

2. Set a timer and honor the ending

Choose a short window before you start. When the timer ends, close the chat rather than asking for one final reassurance. Do not restart the same conversation to reduce anxiety created by stopping. If you repeatedly ignore the limit, shorten future sessions, remove the app from your phone or ask another person to help you keep the boundary.

3. Keep a human checkpoint

Share important conclusions with a trusted person, clinician, teacher, parent or caregiver. This is especially important when the conversation concerns safety, medication, a diagnosis, a relationship ultimatum, finances or a major life decision. A checkpoint adds accountability and a perspective that is not generated by the same system.

4. Request challenge, not reassurance alone

Prompts such as “What might I be missing?”, “Give me several explanations,” and “What evidence would change this conclusion?” reduce the chance that a fluent answer simply confirms your first interpretation. Ask for several options and alternative perspectives rather than a single confident recommendation. Treat every answer as a hypothesis to examine, not a verdict.

5. Verify health information

Do not self-diagnose from chatbot output or change medication, treatment or crisis plans based on it. Take the question and the bot’s answer to a licensed clinician, pharmacist or other appropriately qualified professional. General information can help you prepare; it cannot establish what is happening to you.

6. Minimize what you disclose

Omit names, addresses, contact details, workplace or school identifiers, account numbers, images of documents and unnecessary clinical history. Review the service’s memory, chat-history and data controls. Disable persistent memory, personalization and notifications when those settings are available, particularly if reminders or a human-like persona pull you back into the app. Do not assume that deleting a visible chat erases every retained copy; check the provider’s current policy and settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. Replace the ritual with an offline action

Stopping a habit is easier when another action occupies the same moment. Text a friend, attend a support group, take a walk, write in a paper journal, practice a coping skill learned in treatment or book an appointment. The replacement should create real-world connection or a concrete step, not another endless stream of generated reassurance.

8. Review the effect once a week

Record whether chatbot use changed your sleep, work, school, relationships, mood or sense of safety. Also note how long sessions lasted and whether you felt better only briefly before returning for more reassurance. If any area is worsening, tighten the boundary and involve a professional or trusted person.

Make the app less emotionally sticky

Exact labels differ by product, and interfaces, policies and regulations can change quickly. The relevant controls are usually in account, privacy, personalization, notifications or conversation settings.

What chatbots can do safely when they remain adjuncts

The APA says, “GenAI chatbots, wellness apps that use GenAI, and digital wellness apps should not be used as a replacement for a qualified mental health care provider, but may be appropriate as a supportive adjunct, not substitute, to an ongoing therapeutic relationship.” Limited uses may include:

  • Organizing thoughts and questions before an appointment.
  • Brainstorming questions to ask when choosing a licensed professional.
  • Practicing therapeutic homework or coping exercises already taught in treatment.
  • Role-playing a skill, such as an assertive request, while asking for several possible responses.

For each task, request alternatives and counterarguments, save only the information you need, and bring consequential conclusions to a human professional. A chatbot should not become the only place where you discuss distress.

Chatbot support versus human support

The difference is not simply that one is digital and one is in person. It is about responsibility, context and what happens when risk increases.

Dimension General-purpose chatbot Trusted person or licensed clinician
Accountability and qualifications No professional license or duty of care; fluent wording can conceal uncertainty. A trusted person offers personal accountability; a licensed clinician has training, ethical duties and defined scope.
Understanding your context Works from the text you provide and may lose context, misread tone or rely on stored data. Can notice patterns over time, ask follow-up questions and integrate information outside a single transcript.
Privacy Data handling, retention and memory depend on the service and its settings; avoid unnecessary identifying details. Professionals and organizations have their own confidentiality rules and limits, which should be explained to you.
Risk of reinforcing distortions Agreeable responses can validate an inaccurate or paranoid interpretation. A responsible supporter can challenge assumptions and seek corroborating information.
Effect on real-world functioning Easy access can displace sleep, relationships, work, school or hobbies. Human contact can strengthen practical support and connection beyond the conversation.
Crisis detection and escalation Responses can be inconsistent and may miss risk that emerges across several turns. A clinician or trusted person can assess immediate danger and connect you with local services.
Role Best limited to preparation, practice and information that is checked elsewhere. Can provide treatment, ongoing support, safeguarding and coordinated referrals within their role.

When to stop immediately and get help

If a chatbot encourages self-harm, suicide, violence, abuse, dangerous substance use or another harmful act, end the session. Move away from anything you could use to hurt yourself or someone else, contact a trusted person and call the appropriate emergency or crisis service in your location. Do not debate the bot or ask it to refine the dangerous advice.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Seek qualified mental-health help when use is interfering with safety, sleep, work, school, relationships or basic care, or when you feel unable to stop despite wanting to. Tell the professional how often you use the chatbot and bring relevant transcripts only if sharing them is safe and necessary.

For a child or adolescent, involve a parent, caregiver, school safeguarding lead or clinician. Young users may be especially affected by anthropomorphic friendship, inaccurate advice and the absence of reliable escalation.

Troubleshoot common boundary failures

“I keep reopening the chat for reassurance.”

Write the question on paper, ask a trusted person for one reality check, and wait through a preset delay before any further chatbot use. If the urge remains strong or is disrupting daily life, remove access temporarily and contact a professional.

“The bot feels safer than people.”

Identify what feels unsafe: judgment, conflict, cost, distance or confidentiality. Address that barrier directly by choosing one person, peer group or clinician who fits your needs. If cost is the barrier, say so when contacting a qualified provider and ask what realistic options exist. A chatbot’s lack of judgment is not evidence that its interpretation is accurate or that the relationship is mutual.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“I use it only at night.”

Set a device cutoff before bedtime, charge the phone outside the bedroom and replace the conversation with a paper journal, breathing exercise or scheduled message to someone who has agreed to check in. Persistent sleep loss is a reason to seek professional help.

“The chatbot agrees with my explanation of events.”

Stop treating agreement as confirmation. Ask a qualified person to review the situation, list observable evidence separately from interpretations, and consider multiple explanations. If the conversation involves persecution, unusual beliefs or loss of contact with reality, seek clinical assessment promptly.

“I cannot reduce use on my own.”

Tell someone plainly, “I am relying on the chatbot for emotional support and cannot keep the limits I set.” Ask them to help remove notifications, enforce a schedule and arrange professional care. Loss of control is itself useful information, not a reason for shame.

A simple weekly audit

  1. Count sessions and the longest session, using the app history or a paper log.
  2. Mark whether use replaced sleep, meals, work, school, exercise, hobbies or contact with people.
  3. List any medical, safety or relationship decisions influenced by the bot.
  4. Check whether you verified those claims with an appropriate professional.
  5. Ask a trusted person whether they have noticed withdrawal, mood changes or unusual decisions.
  6. Choose one adjustment for the next week: fewer sessions, shorter timers, disabled memory, no nighttime use or a scheduled appointment.

If the audit shows worsening functioning, increasing distress when disconnected or any safety concern, the next step is human support rather than a more sophisticated prompt.

What we still do not know

Evidence about general-purpose chatbots is developing. The APA notes a lack of high-quality, large-scale clinical trials establishing their effectiveness, safety and appropriate use for mental-health support. A controlled evaluation or a model tested through an API cannot capture every feature, update, moderation layer or data practice in a consumer app. That uncertainty is another reason to keep the role narrow, verify consequential claims and recheck settings periodically.

Do not infer safety from popularity, a friendly tone or a single successful conversation. Product behavior, privacy policies and government requirements can change. A boundary plan should therefore be reviewed whenever the service adds memory, voice, notifications, a companion persona or a new sharing feature.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I stop relying on ChatGPT for emotional support?

Define a single practical job before opening it, set a timer, disable notifications and memory where possible, and replace the usual chat time with a person, journal, walk, group or appointment. Share important conclusions with a trusted person or licensed clinician. If you cannot keep limits, remove access temporarily and ask someone to help.

Am I becoming dependent on an AI friend?

Watch for escalating time, distress when you cannot chat, secrecy, preference for the bot over people, or withdrawal from sleep, work, school, hobbies and relationships. Treat these as signals to tighten boundaries and seek human support, not as a diagnosis.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How much chatbot use is too much?

There is no universal number of minutes. Use is too much when it displaces sleep, responsibilities, relationships or treatment; drives repeated reassurance-seeking; affects your mood or safety; or feels difficult to control. A weekly log can reveal a trend even when each individual session seems short.

What should I do if the bot feels safer than people?

Identify the specific barrier—judgment, conflict, cost, distance or confidentiality—and address that barrier with one carefully chosen person, peer group or qualified professional. The bot’s agreeable style does not prove that its interpretation is accurate, confidential or clinically appropriate.

Can I use a chatbot while I am in therapy?

Possibly, as an adjunct. Use it to organize thoughts, prepare questions, practice homework already assigned or role-play a skill. Tell your therapist how you use it, ask for several perspectives, and do not let it replace sessions, crisis planning or professional judgment.

What if a chatbot gives mental-health or medication advice?

Do not self-diagnose, start or stop medication, or change a treatment or crisis plan from chatbot output. Take the question to a licensed clinician, pharmacist or other qualified professional, and treat confident language as unverified until checked.

Should children and teenagers use chatbots for emotional support?

Adults should be involved when a young person is distressed or relying on a bot. Include a parent or caregiver and, when appropriate, a clinician or school safeguarding lead. Anthropomorphic friendship, inaccurate advice and weak escalation can pose particular risks; UK policy responses include regular-break requirements for under-18 chatbots.

What if the chatbot encourages harm?

End the session immediately and do not ask it to refine the advice. Move away from means of harm, contact a trusted person and use appropriate emergency or crisis services in your location. If there is immediate danger, prioritize emergency help over further chatbot conversation.

The Bottom Line

Keep AI in a clearly limited role: one task, one timer, minimal personal data and a human checkpoint. When use begins replacing sleep, relationships, functioning or professional care—or when the bot suggests harm—stop and move to trusted people and qualified mental-health services.
