To stop an AI agent immediately, use its Pause, Stop, Cancel, or Interrupt control, then deny any action waiting for confirmation. To prevent future access, disconnect the connected account in the AI product, revoke the authorization at the external service, and—if the agent is organization-managed—disable or restrict its identity. These controls operate at different layers, so stopping one does not automatically perform the others.

If an action has already completed, stopping the agent cannot undo it. Treat the response as a sequence: halt the live run, remove the connection or grant, stop background workflows, and verify that no other account or administrator-managed connection remains active.

Choose the control that matches what you need to stop

“Stop the agent” can mean several different things. A live tool call, a pending approval, a connected account, a provider authorization, and an enterprise identity are separate control points.

Goal Control to use Typical scope What it does not do
Prevent a tool call that is running or waiting Pause, Stop, Cancel, Interrupt, or Deny Current turn or tool request It may not end a background workflow that was already started
Prevent future use of a connected app Disconnect the connected account in the AI product That account connection It does not automatically erase stored chats, files, or memories
Block the AI product at the service provider Revoke the app’s authorization or consent grant The provider account or grant It may not stop a different account or a separate grant
Disable an organization-managed agent Disable its identity or block authentication with an identity policy One agent identity or a broader tenant category Broad policies can affect other agents and workflows
Prevent a class of actions in the future Change action or permission settings Future prompts or enabled capabilities It is not the same as disconnecting or revoking access already granted

Use the narrowest control that achieves your goal. A denial is appropriate for one dangerous request; a disconnected account is appropriate when an assistant should no longer reach a service; an identity or conditional-access change is appropriate for a managed enterprise incident.

Stop an action that is happening right now

1. Pause or interrupt the current session

  1. Open the agent session that is displaying progress, a tool call, or an approval card.
  2. Select Pause, Stop, Cancel, or Interrupt, whichever label that product provides.
  3. Wait for the interface to show that the turn or tool request has stopped. Do not start another instruction in the same session until you have confirmed the state.

Interface labels vary by product, plan, region, account type, and workspace policy. If there is no visible control, close neither the browser tab nor the application as your only response; those actions do not reliably revoke an authorization or terminate work already running on a service.

2. Deny a pending confirmation

If the agent is waiting for permission to send a message, change a record, run code, make a purchase, or perform another tool action, choose Deny, Decline, or the equivalent refusal. Do not approve the card while trying to stop the run. Denying the card blocks that requested action, but it does not necessarily remove the agent’s ability to ask again later.

3. Stop queued or background work separately

An interrupted conversation turn can be different from a workflow, job, scheduled task, or automation that the turn created. Open the product’s task or workflow area and cancel any run that is still queued or executing. Check for retries and scheduled instances as well as the visible session. If the agent triggered work in an external service, inspect that service’s job history and cancel the job there when possible.

4. Interrupt an API-managed agent

For Claude’s managed-agent event API, a client can send a user.interrupt event to interrupt the current session turn. The API’s session guidance warns that interrupting a turn does not automatically end open workflow runs. After sending the interrupt, enumerate active runs and stop each one through the workflow controls or API provided by the system that owns the run.

Keep the interrupt operation and the workflow cancellation as separate checks in incident records. A successful session response only proves that the current turn was interrupted; it is not proof that every action initiated before the interruption has stopped.

Disconnect a connected app to prevent future access

ChatGPT connected-account path

For ChatGPT, OpenAI’s current help instructions use this path:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps or Plugins, depending on the product surface.
  3. Choose the app whose account should no longer be available.
  4. Open the connected-account or Connection controls.
  5. Select Disconnect and confirm.

Disconnecting stops future access through that connected account. The exact labels and availability can differ by plan, region, account type, and workspace policy. If the same service appears under another account, repeat the process for that connection. A connection controlled by an employer or school may require the workspace administrator to remove it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Disconnecting is a forward-looking access change. It does not automatically delete conversations, uploaded files, memories, exported data, or records that the AI product already retained. Use the product’s separate data-management controls if deletion is required, and follow the external service’s retention and deletion procedures as well.

Check every account and connection

  • Look for personal and work accounts separately.
  • Check connections created in another browser profile, mobile app, or desktop client.
  • Review workspace-managed connections that an administrator enabled for multiple users.
  • Inspect any automation or workflow that may have its own service account rather than using your interactive login.

Stopping one visible connection does not affect a second authorization held by another identity.

Revoke the authorization at the external service

An AI product can lose its connection in the product interface while a provider-side authorization remains available, or the provider may continue to issue tokens for another client. Sign in to the connected service and open its authorization, security, connected-app, or consent page. Find the AI product or agent and revoke that grant. The menu name and location depend on the provider and account type, so there is no universal revoke path.

Provider-side revocation is especially important when:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The AI product’s disconnect control is unavailable or fails.
  • The account is managed by an organization.
  • You suspect a second client, token, or refresh grant is still active.
  • The agent had permission to act without an interactive user present.

After revocation, existing access tokens may remain usable until the provider invalidates them or they expire, depending on the provider’s implementation. Confirm the result by checking token or session activity in the provider’s security logs and by attempting a harmless read with the agent. Do not use a destructive test.

Approval prompts and access grants are different

Permission settings answer the question, “Should the agent ask before doing this?” Connection and authorization controls answer, “Can the agent reach this account at all?” Changing the first does not automatically change the second.

In ChatGPT, permission choices can control whether the app asks before reading information or making changes. OpenAI states that changing an app permission does not disconnect the app or revoke access already granted to the provider account. If the objective is to remove access, disconnect the account and use the provider’s authorization controls rather than relying only on an approval prompt.

When a setting appears to stop only new capabilities

Managed ChatGPT workspaces can expose action controls and permission defaults. OpenAI notes that disabling new actions applies to actions introduced later; it does not remove actions that were already enabled. Review existing enabled actions individually, then disconnect or revoke the related account when the agent should have no access.

Why changing a prompt may still be useful

After access has been reduced to the required minimum, an approval-before-change setting can provide a useful safety barrier for future requests. It is a defense against an unwanted operation, not a substitute for removing credentials. A prompt can be missed, auto-approved by policy, or presented again by another workflow.

Stop an organization-managed agent

If an agent belongs to a company or school tenant, an end user may not control its identity or authorization. An administrator must identify the actual agent identity, the resources it can reach, and the workflows that depend on it before applying a tenant-wide control.

Disable one agent identity

In Microsoft Entra, an administrator can disable an individual agent identity. This prevents the identity from authenticating or obtaining new tokens while retaining the identity record for investigation and recovery. Review sign-in and audit activity first, record the identity identifier, and notify owners of any workflows that use it.

“Disabling an agent identity in your tenant might have broader consequences than simply stopping new AI agents from being created or used.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That Microsoft Learn warning matters because an identity can be shared by scheduled jobs, integrations, or product experiences that are not obvious from the chat session. Disabling it can interrupt those dependencies even when the immediate incident involves only one action.

Block a broader category with Conditional Access

Microsoft Entra Conditional Access can block authentication for wider categories of agent identities or sign-in conditions. Use this when the risk affects a class of agents rather than one known identity. Microsoft recommends evaluating a policy in report-only mode before enforcement. Examine which users, agents, applications, and workflows would match; correct exclusions and dependencies; then enforce the policy deliberately.

Conditional Access has a wider blast radius than disabling one identity. Document the intended scope, an emergency recovery path, and the owner who can reverse the policy. Keep audit logging enabled so you can distinguish blocked attempts from successful activity.

Identify the permission type before revoking access

Microsoft Entra distinguishes two important grant types. Selecting the wrong one can leave an autonomous path open.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Grant type How the agent acts What to inspect Typical containment
Delegated permission An interactive agent acts on behalf of a signed-in user The user consent, delegated scopes, refresh tokens, and user sign-ins Disconnect the user account, revoke the delegated consent or sessions, and restrict scopes
Application permission An autonomous agent acts without a user being present The service principal, application roles, credentials, certificates, secrets, and workload sign-ins Disable the agent identity or service principal, revoke application grants, and rotate or remove credentials

Start by locating the identity that appears in Entra sign-in and audit logs. Then identify whether the event used delegated or application permissions. Revoke the corresponding grant and credentials, not merely the chat connection. A narrow authorization design—such as a role scoped to one resource instead of an entire tenant—reduces the impact of a future mistake.

Troubleshoot when the agent still acts

The same app can still read or change data

  • Verify that you disconnected the correct account, not only a similarly named connection.
  • Check for another personal, work, or service account.
  • Revoke the provider-side authorization and inspect active sessions or tokens.
  • Look for a background workflow that already received work before the chat was interrupted.
  • Ask the workspace administrator whether a managed connection overrides your local setting.

The agent stopped, but a change already occurred

Stopping a run prevents additional operations; it does not roll back a message sent, record edited, file deleted, or other completed action. Use the affected service’s audit trail and native undo or recovery process. Preserve timestamps, request IDs, and identity details before cleanup so an administrator can determine exactly what happened.

Disconnect is unavailable

A missing control can indicate a workspace policy, an older product surface, or an account that another administrator manages. Do not assume that signing out will revoke the grant. Contact the workspace administrator, then use the external provider’s authorization page to remove the grant if you have authority there.

A broad block would disrupt other systems

Do not apply a tenant-wide Conditional Access rule as a first step when one identity is known. Disable or restrict the specific identity, stop its workflows, and review logs. Escalate to a broader policy only when the affected category is understood and the organization has tested the policy in report-only mode.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Verification checklist after stopping access

  1. Confirm the live session shows a stopped or interrupted state.
  2. Confirm every pending tool approval was denied.
  3. List and cancel queued, scheduled, and retrying workflows.
  4. Disconnect each relevant account in the AI product.
  5. Revoke the matching authorization at the external provider.
  6. For enterprise agents, record the identity, grant type, scopes, and any disabled or blocked policy.
  7. Review sign-in, token, audit, and workflow logs for activity after the cutoff time.
  8. Run a non-destructive access test and verify that the agent receives an authorization failure rather than data.
  9. Review retained conversations, files, and memories separately if data removal is required.
  10. Document which control was used, its scope, its side effects, and the owner responsible for restoring access.

Controls that are not reliable substitutes

  • Closing a browser tab: it may hide the interface while a server-side run continues.
  • Signing out of the AI product: it does not necessarily revoke a provider grant or stop an autonomous identity.
  • Changing an approval prompt: it changes prompting behavior, not the underlying authorization.
  • Deleting a chat: it does not prove that a connected service, token, workflow, or provider-side record was removed.
  • Disabling only newly introduced actions: existing enabled actions may remain available.

The safest response is layered: interrupt the live turn, deny pending actions, cancel background work, disconnect the account, revoke the provider grant, and apply the narrowest administrator control required for any remaining identity.
