To stop one product from shaping Amazon.com recommendations, open Improve Your Recommendations, find the product, and switch off Use this item for recommendations. Then open Your Browsing History and remove viewed products you do not want influencing future suggestions. These controls change recommendation signals; Amazon does not promise an instant, complete reset on every page or device.
Start with the control that matches the problem
Amazon uses several separate systems and surfaces. An unwanted product in the Amazon store, a sponsored ad on an Echo Show, a Discover-row suggestion on a Fire tablet, and a recommendation influenced by an Alexa request do not share one universal “turn everything off” switch. Use the narrowest control that addresses what you are seeing.

Remove an embarrassing product from Amazon store recommendations
These steps apply to the Amazon.com account whose recommendations you want to change. They are account-level controls, so use the correct account before editing anything.

- Sign in to the correct Amazon account. If several household members use the same login, changes affect the shared account’s recommendation signals rather than one person’s private profile.
- Open Improve Your Recommendations. You can reach it from the account or recommendations area. The page lists products Amazon can use to learn your interests.
- Find the product you do not want used as a signal. Search or browse the list until you locate the item. The item can be embarrassing, irrelevant, a gift, or something you viewed only to research.
- Turn off Use this item for recommendations. This tells Amazon not to use that item when shaping recommendations. It is an exclusion from a recommendation signal, not a cancellation of an order and not a deletion of the product from Amazon’s catalog.
- Open Your Browsing History separately. Locate the same product and remove it from the viewed-items list. Also remove related products that you do not want continuing to influence suggestions.
- Return to the recommendation surface later. Amazon documents the controls but does not publish one guaranteed refresh period for every page, marketplace, app, or device. A recommendation can therefore remain visible temporarily, and other signals may still produce similar products.
Turning off the item in Improve Your Recommendations and removing it from Your Browsing History serve different purposes. The first changes how Amazon treats a selected product as a recommendation input. The second removes the record of products you viewed. Doing both is the most complete account-level response supported by Amazon’s documented controls.
Clear the browsing signals that keep similar products appearing
Browsing history is independent of the recommendation toggle. A product can be excluded in Improve Your Recommendations while related viewed products remain in history, or history can be edited without excluding a specific item. Review the list for:

- The product that appears embarrassing or unwanted.
- Near-duplicate listings, alternate sizes, colors, or bundles of the same product.
- Related search results you opened while comparing products.
- Gift research or one-time purchases that do not reflect your ongoing interests.
Remove only the entries you do not want influencing future suggestions. Clearing history can make recommendations less useful for products you genuinely intend to buy again, so it is not necessary to delete the entire list to address one unwanted category.
If the item was purchased by another person using the same account, check the account’s shared history before assuming Amazon has misclassified you. The documented controls operate on the account, not on an unrecognized private household profile. Removing a viewed item also does not remove an order, receipt, review, list entry, or catalog listing.
What these account controls cannot guarantee
Amazon’s documentation does not promise that recommendations vanish immediately after an item is excluded or history is removed. Recommendation surfaces can use more than one signal, and the same or similar products may be generated by other activity. Do not treat the controls as a guaranteed account-wide reset.
- They do not erase orders. Excluding an item from recommendations is not the same as deleting an order or invoice.
- They do not remove every recommendation. Other viewed items, purchases, searches, lists, or contextual signals may continue to shape suggestions.
- They do not disable advertising. Store recommendations and advertising preferences are separate systems.
- They may not have identical labels everywhere. Amazon.com, another marketplace, a mobile app, and a particular device software version can present different menus. Look for the equivalent current label if the wording differs.
Use sign-out and cookie blocking only for a stronger privacy trade-off
Amazon says browsing without linking history to an account is possible by signing out and blocking cookies. This is a more disruptive approach than editing recommendations and history. Blocking cookies can impair cart, checkout, and sign-in-dependent functions, so it is best viewed as a privacy trade-off rather than the first fix for an embarrassing suggestion.

If you choose this route, expect to sign in again when a feature requires an account and expect some site functions to behave differently. It also does not retroactively remove activity already associated with an account. Use it for future unaffiliated browsing, not as a substitute for deleting or excluding existing signals.
Stop or reduce unwanted content on an Echo Show
Echo Show screens combine sponsored ads, interest-based advertising, and non-sponsored suggestions. Identify which type you are seeing before changing a setting. A control for one category does not automatically affect the others.

Amazon’s Echo screen help says sponsored ads cannot be turned off. You can skip the ad currently on screen by swiping from right to left. You can also hide a particular ad for 30 days. Hiding one ad is temporary and does not remove other sponsored ads from the device. If the same subject appears in another sponsored campaign, that is a different ad and may still be shown.
Interest-based ads: change personalization, not ad delivery
To change how advertising is personalized, use the relevant preference in Manage Your Alexa Data. Turning off interest-based ads affects ad personalization. It does not necessarily remove ads, disable store recommendations, or stop every similar feature. You may still see advertising, but the selection should no longer be based on the opted-out interest profile in the same way.
This distinction matters when troubleshooting. If an embarrassing item appears in an Amazon shopping carousel rather than an ad labeled as sponsored, changing the interest-based advertising preference is not the direct fix. Edit the account recommendation and browsing controls instead.
Non-sponsored suggestions: adjust the home screen
Items such as Amazon Recommendations, Your Frequent Orders, and Explore Local Places are not the same as sponsored ads. Amazon directs users to home-screen customization controls for these suggestions. Changing those controls affects what appears on the Echo Show home screen; it does not switch off sponsored advertising.

Remove recommendations from a Fire tablet
Dismiss one item in the Discover row
- Find the unwanted recommendation in the Fire tablet’s Discover row.
- Press and hold the item.
- Choose Not Interested.
This is a device-level dismissal for the selected Discover-row item. It is not the same as editing the Amazon account’s browsing history or excluding a product in Improve Your Recommendations. If the item is also appearing on the Amazon website, perform the account-level steps separately.
Hide the recommendations section
- Open Settings.
- Choose Apps and Notifications.
- Open Amazon App Settings.
- Choose Home Screens.
- Turn off Recommendations and Continue and Discover Row.
The exact wording can differ with Fire OS updates. If you do not see the label, look under the tablet’s Amazon app or home-screen settings for an equivalent recommendations or Discover-row switch. Hiding this section changes the tablet layout; it does not delete account browsing history or prevent recommendations elsewhere.

Filter mature or adult lock-screen ad content
- Open Settings.
- Choose Apps and Notifications.
- Open Amazon App Settings.
- Choose Special Offers.
- Open Content Filtering and enable the available filter.
This setting targets mature or adult content in lock-screen advertising. Amazon says parental controls do not remove mature or adult content from store search results or some content categories, so it is not a complete content filter and not a switch to remove all ads. Apply it specifically to lock-screen offers rather than expecting it to clean every recommendation surface.
Review and delete Alexa activity linked to shopping
If the unwanted recommendations followed a voice search, shopping request, or typed request to Alexa, review the activity in Alexa privacy controls. Available records can include voice recordings, text transcripts, and typed requests.
- Open Alexa’s privacy controls for the account used on the device.
- Review voice recordings, transcripts, and typed requests connected with the unwanted product or topic.
- Delete the records you do not want retained.
- Check the recommendation surface again later rather than expecting an immediate reset.
Amazon warns that deleting voice recordings, text transcripts, and typed requests may limit its ability to personalize your experience, make improvements based on Alexa interactions, and keep certain features working. Deletion is therefore a privacy choice with a functionality trade-off. It may also leave some other interaction records in place; do not describe it as complete deletion of every Alexa-related signal.
Choose the right fix when the product keeps returning
- It appears in the Amazon store: verify the item is excluded in Improve Your Recommendations, then remove it and related views from Your Browsing History.
- It appears only on an Echo Show: determine whether it is sponsored, interest-based, or a home-screen suggestion. Use the matching control instead of changing account history blindly.
- It appears in a Fire tablet Discover row: long-press and choose Not Interested. If the entire section is unwanted, disable it in Home Screens.
- It follows a voice request: inspect Alexa privacy activity and weigh the personalization and feature effects before deleting records.
- The menu is missing: confirm you are signed in to the intended account, check whether you are in the Amazon.com marketplace, and look for equivalent labels in the current app or device software.
- A similar product appears after removal: remember that excluding one item does not block an entire category. Remove related browsing entries and adjust the specific surface where the suggestion appears.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Confusing ad controls with recommendation controls. Opting out of interest-based ads does not turn off store recommendations, and hiding one Echo Show ad does not remove all advertising.
- Expecting one switch to cover every device. Amazon store, Echo Show, Fire tablet, and Alexa activity controls operate at different scopes.
- Calling Fire tablet parental controls a universal filter. The documented filter is narrower and does not cover every store result or content category.
- Deleting everything without considering usefulness. Removing history and Alexa activity can reduce personalization or affect features; target the unwanted signals when possible.
- Assuming a delayed update means the setting failed. Amazon does not state a universal refresh time, and other signals can independently generate similar recommendations.
- Editing the wrong account. A household may have several Amazon logins, profiles, or devices. Confirm the account shown in the browser or Alexa privacy page before making changes.
A practical privacy-preserving sequence
For most Amazon.com users, use this order so you make the smallest change that solves the problem:

- Exclude the specific product in Improve Your Recommendations.
- Remove that product and related views from Your Browsing History.
- Apply a device-specific control if the item is on an Echo Show or Fire tablet.
- Review Alexa activity only if a voice or typed request is part of the concern.
- Use sign-out and cookie blocking only if the broader privacy trade-off is acceptable.
This sequence separates exclusion, deletion, hiding, ad opt-out, and device customization instead of treating them as interchangeable actions.

Will turning off “Use this item for recommendations” delete the product or my order?
No. It excludes the selected product as a recommendation signal. It does not cancel or erase an order, invoice, review, list entry, or the product from Amazon’s catalog.
Why is a similar product still appearing after I remove one item?
Excluding one listing does not block an entire category. Remove related views from Your Browsing History and check the specific surface—store, Echo Show, Fire tablet, or Alexa—that is displaying the suggestion.
Can I turn off all Echo Show sponsored ads?
Amazon’s Echo screen help says sponsored ads cannot be turned off. You can swipe from right to left to skip the current ad or hide a particular ad for 30 days.
Does turning off interest-based ads remove Echo Show recommendations?
No. The preference changes ad personalization. Ads may still appear, and personalized store recommendations or other suggestions may continue.

How do I remove a Fire tablet Discover recommendation?
Long-press the item in the Discover row and choose Not Interested. To hide the whole recommendations section, use Settings → Apps and Notifications → Amazon App Settings → Home Screens and turn off Recommendations and Continue and Discover Row.
