To change product suggestions on Amazon.com in the US, manage the items in Your Browsing History and exclude specific items in Improve Your Recommendations. For an item you do not want used for recommendations, Amazon documents unchecking Use this item for recommendations on that item’s page. These settings address store recommendations; personalized ads and your browser’s local history have separate controls.
The right setting depends on what you want to change: the list of items associated with your browsing history, the recommendation input for one item, advertising preferences, or history saved by a particular browser. Those controls are not interchangeable, and none should be treated as a promise that every record or every kind of personalization has been erased.
Change the recommendation settings on your Amazon account
Amazon’s US Privacy Notice, last updated June 30, 2026, says the company uses personal information to recommend features, products, and services, identify preferences, and personalize the Amazon experience. Amazon’s wording is: “We use your personal information to recommend features, products, and services that might be of interest to you, identify your preferences, and personalize your experience with Amazon Services.” The notice points customers to two account controls: Your Browsing History, which customers can edit, and Improve Your Recommendations, which includes a per-item exclusion setting.

Sign in to the Amazon account whose recommendations you want to change. Then use the settings below. Amazon’s notice names the pages and toggle, but does not guarantee a fixed navigation path or describe every current page layout. Look for the named controls in the account or browsing-history areas; labels and placement may vary. If an item or control is not immediately visible, use Amazon’s account or browsing-history area to locate the named page rather than relying on a click sequence that may no longer match your layout.

It helps to decide what you want to accomplish before editing anything. If you want to manage viewed products in the account’s history list, start with Your Browsing History. If you want Amazon not to use a particular item for recommendations, go to Improve Your Recommendations and change that item’s toggle. If the content you object to is an advertisement, use the separate advertising-preferences control. If you only want a visited page absent from the local history in Amazon Silk, that is a browser feature, not an account recommendation setting.
Edit Your Browsing History
- Open Your Browsing History from your account or the browsing-history area.
- Find the viewed items you want to manage and use the controls displayed on that page.
Amazon confirms that customers can edit Browsing History, but its notice does not specify the exact removal-button wording or promise what effect a particular history edit will have on every recommendation. The page’s available controls and labels may vary. Follow the options shown there; do not assume a particular button name or infer that editing the list necessarily deletes all information Amazon may have associated with an item.
History management and recommendation management are related, but Amazon documents them as distinct settings. Editing a viewed item in Your Browsing History addresses the history list. If your goal is specifically to exclude an item from recommendations, use the separate recommendation control below as well. That is the clearest action Amazon documents for a particular item. This distinction is useful when you want to tidy the list and also make a specific recommendation preference explicit.

Exclude an item in Improve Your Recommendations
- Open Improve Your Recommendations while signed in to the account whose suggestions you want to change.
- Find the item you do not want used for recommendations.
- On that item’s page, uncheck Use this item for recommendations.
Amazon’s Privacy Notice describes this toggle as a way to remove recommendations you do not want to see. It is a per-item recommendation setting: locate the item and uncheck the toggle associated with that item. The wording refers to recommendations, not the deletion of the item’s purchase or browsing record. Amazon does not describe this control as a way to disable all recommendations, all personalization, or all uses of personal information.
For example, if a product you viewed is influencing suggestions you would rather not receive, the documented step is to find that product under Improve Your Recommendations and turn off Use this item for recommendations. If you also want to manage the item in your viewed-item list, separately inspect Your Browsing History. The two pages serve different purposes, so changing one should not be assumed to make the other change automatically.

Amazon’s notice does not specify how quickly a recommendation display must change after you edit a setting, whether every suggestion surface updates at the same time, or how the setting affects other items. Avoid interpreting the toggle more broadly than Amazon describes it: it is the control for whether that individual item is used for recommendations.
Choose the control that matches what you want to change
Amazon’s account and browser settings affect different layers. Use the control that corresponds to the unwanted activity rather than treating them as interchangeable privacy switches. A product suggestion in the store, an advertisement, a history entry saved in a browser, and browsing that is linked to an account are different issues.

The practical differences are scope and effect. The recommendation toggle applies to one item. Your Browsing History is for editing the account’s viewed-item list, though Amazon’s notice does not set out the precise effect of each available edit. Your Ads Privacy Choices concerns personalized advertising. Signing out and blocking cookies is a broader choice about linking browsing to an account, with possible shopping-function costs. Silk private tabs affect Silk’s local browsing history after a tab closes. Pick the narrowest control that matches the problem you are trying to solve.
If the unwanted suggestions are advertisements
Product recommendations shown in the Amazon store and personalized advertisements are not the same setting. If your concern is personalized advertising, go to Your Ads Privacy Choices. Amazon identifies that as an advertising control, separately from Your Browsing History and Improve Your Recommendations. For an unwanted store product suggestion, use the item-level recommendation toggle instead.
This distinction matters if you see a product in more than one context. Changing an advertising preference is not the same documented action as excluding an item from Amazon store recommendations. Likewise, excluding a product from recommendations does not establish that personalized advertising preferences have changed. If both kinds of content concern you, use the control Amazon identifies for each rather than assuming that one setting covers both.

What signing out and blocking cookies can—and cannot—do
Amazon’s Privacy Notice says customers who want to browse its websites without linking browsing history to their account may sign out and block cookies in their browser. Amazon also warns that rejecting cookies may prevent shopping-cart use, checkout, and services that require sign-in. This is a broader browsing choice with practical consequences, not the first setting to try if you only want to exclude a product from recommendations.

It is not a claim that websites cannot observe your visit, nor does it say that cookie blocking changes information already associated with your account. If you need cart, checkout, or other signed-in services, consider using the account controls rather than blocking cookies. The trade-off is practical: cookie blocking may interfere with core shopping functions, while the account controls let you manage the specific history or recommendation settings Amazon names.
Signing out alone is not the complete approach Amazon describes for browsing without linking browsing history to an account; the notice names signing out and blocking cookies. The same notice cautions about the consequences of rejecting cookies. Treat this as an optional, broader browsing measure, not as a substitute for the per-item recommendation toggle or a guarantee that Amazon no longer retains information about past activity.
Amazon Silk private browsing is a separate layer
Amazon Silk’s private tabs affect the browser’s local history: Amazon says pages visited in a private tab are removed from Silk browsing history after that tab closes. Downloaded files and bookmarks remain. Amazon’s Silk information also notes that the websites visited or your internet provider may still be able to see activity.
Closing a Silk private tab therefore should not be treated as changing the recommendation settings on an Amazon account. Use Improve Your Recommendations for a specific recommendation item, and use Silk’s private mode only for the browser-history behavior it documents. A private tab can change what remains in Silk’s local browsing history after closure, but it does not establish that a visit was hidden from the sites visited, an internet provider, or Amazon’s account-level recommendation system.

This distinction applies even if you are using Silk to visit Amazon. There are two separate questions: whether a page remains in the browser’s local history and whether an item is used for recommendations on your Amazon account. Amazon’s Silk guidance addresses the first; Amazon’s account recommendation setting addresses the second. Downloads and bookmarks are also not cleared simply because the private tab closes.
