If your AirPods Pro slip out, start by reseating them rather than buying accessories: insert the ear tip gently, rotate the stem toward your face, and adjust the angle until the bud feels secure without pressure. Wear them while walking for 10 to 15 minutes. A tip that loosens or lets the AirPod move is usually too small; one that feels compressed is too large.
Then test each ear independently. AirPods Pro 1 and 2 use Apple’s Ear Tip Fit Test, while AirPods Pro 3 uses the Acoustic Seal Test. The tests check the acoustic seal that supports sound and noise cancellation, but they cannot guarantee that an earbud will stay put during every activity.
Do this first: a five-minute fit reset
- Check the labels. Put the unit marked L in your left ear and R in your right ear. A reversed earbud can feel unstable even when the tip size is correct.
- Inspect the tip. Make sure the silicone edge is fully attached and not folded over. If it is dirty or damp, remove it and clean it before testing.
- Insert gently. Place the tip at the ear-canal opening; do not force it deep into the canal.
- Rotate the stem toward your face. A small rotation changes how the body rests in the outer ear. Adjust the rotation and angle until the AirPod feels supported rather than pushed in.
- Move normally. Walk, turn your head and speak for 10 to 15 minutes. Check whether either bud shifts, loosens or creates pressure.
- Change one size at a time. If the tip feels loose or the AirPod moves out, try the next larger supplied size. If it feels compressed, painful or crowded, try a smaller size.
Use this process separately for the left and right ear. Your ears do not have to use matching sizes.

Stability depends on two contact points: the ear tip’s seal at the canal opening and the AirPod body’s support in the outer ear. A small tip may not fill the opening, so movement breaks the seal and lets the bud work outward. Apple’s fit guidance states, “AirPods ear tips that are too small feel loose or fall out when you move your head.” A tip that is too large creates the opposite problem: pressure, a compressed feeling or discomfort that makes you remove the earbud.

Sweat, water, skin oil, sunscreen, makeup, shampoo and lotion can also reduce friction between the silicone and your skin. Moisture does not prove that the size is wrong, so dry both your ears and the AirPods before changing sizes. Apple’s general wearing guidance describes a properly worn device as “a snug but comfortable fit”; comfort matters as much as resistance to movement.
There is no official statistic showing how often AirPods fall out. Treat fit as an individual adjustment, not a defect that can be solved with one universal size or accessory.
How to fit AirPods Pro correctly
1. Start with the supplied tips
AirPods Pro are designed around removable, size-specific ear tips. Begin with the tips that came in the box instead of guessing from another model. Gently unroll the outer edge and look inside near the base to find the size marking. Do not stretch the tip aggressively, because deforming the mounting area can make attachment unreliable.
2. Insert without forcing
Hold the AirPod by its body and guide the tip into the canal opening. The tip should sit at the opening and seal by gentle contact. Pressing harder is not a substitute for the correct size and can increase pressure without improving stability.
3. Rotate and settle the stem
With the tip seated, rotate the stem toward your face. Make small changes to the rotation and angle until the body rests naturally in the outer ear. If you need to keep pressing the AirPod inward, remove it and restart; constant pressure usually indicates that the position or size needs adjustment.
4. Test during ordinary movement
Keep the AirPods in for 10 to 15 minutes while walking and doing normal head movements. Notice whether the seal breaks, the sound changes, or the bud creeps outward. A fit that feels secure for a few seconds but shifts during this interval needs another position or size.
5. Tune each ear independently
Try sizes in one ear while leaving the other ear unchanged, then repeat on the other side. It is normal for the left and right ears to require different sizes. Record the combination that remains comfortable and stable; do not switch both sides automatically when only one ear is problematic.

Choosing the right size by symptoms
| What you feel or observe | Likely adjustment | What to check next |
|---|---|---|
| The AirPod loosens, shifts outward or falls when you move your head. | Try the next larger supplied tip. | Reinsert and rotate the stem toward your face; then repeat the 10–15 minute movement check. |
| The tip feels compressed, painful or as though it is pushing against the canal. | Try a smaller supplied tip. | Confirm that the tip is not folded and that you are not pressing the AirPod too deeply. |
| The size feels comfortable but sound is thin or outside noise leaks in. | Reposition first, then test another size. | Run Apple’s fit or seal test for your generation. |
| Only one side moves. | Change the size on that side only. | Check that L and R are in the correct ears and that the two tips are fully attached. |
These are starting points, not a medical diagnosis. Ear shape, canal angle and the way each ear supports the AirPod vary from person to person.
Run Apple’s fit or seal test
After the physical adjustment feels close, use the software check to evaluate the acoustic seal. Connect the AirPods Pro to an iPhone or iPad, open the AirPods settings for the connected device and select the test shown for your model. Apple’s current fit guide is available at Find the right fit with AirPods Pro.
AirPods Pro 1 and AirPods Pro 2: Ear Tip Fit Test
The Ear Tip Fit Test evaluates whether the selected tip seals well enough for the AirPods to deliver their intended sound and noise cancellation. If the result asks you to adjust the position, reseat and rotate the AirPod, then run the test again. If the result remains poor, try another supplied size and retest.
AirPods Pro 3: Acoustic Seal Test
AirPods Pro 3 uses Apple’s Acoustic Seal Test. Follow the same order: correct the position first, then change the tip size if needed, and run the test again. Apple documents the model-specific procedure and tip choices in Choose your AirPods Pro ear tips.
A passing result means the acoustic seal is suitable for the test conditions. It does not promise that the earbuds will never move during running, vigorous exercise or another activity that changes how your outer ear supports them. Keep the movement check as part of your decision.
How to make the test meaningful
Change only one variable between checks. Keep the same earbud in the same ear, alter either its rotation or its tip size, and then repeat the 10-to-15-minute movement period. Changing both sides and both sizes at once makes it hard to know what solved the problem.
Run the software test only after the tip is seated and your skin is dry. If the test reports a poor seal, first remove and reseat the AirPod and adjust the angle. A different size is the next step if repositioning does not help. This order avoids treating a placement error as a sizing problem.

- Seamless Fit : for AirPods Pro (2nd Generation/1st Generation) ,AirPods Pro 2nd Generation USB-C Charging Case(2023),Tips: Only compatible with official Apple Devices.
- Each ear tip features an integrated dust mesh screen. This design not only prevents earwax and debris from clogging the speaker grill but also ensures the earbuds stay securely in place during vigorous exercise and movement.
- Crafted from high-quality, soft silicone, the ultra-lightweight ear tips conform comfortably to your ear canal. This ergonomic design provides a secure seal and long-lasting comfort, making them perfect for extended listening sessions.
- This dual-ended cleaning tool is your all-in-one solution for maintenance. One end reveals a soft bristle brush for dusting, while the other features a precise metal pick and lint loop.
- Keep your accessories organized and clean. The set includes four pairs of silicone tips (XS/S/M/L) and the cleaning pen, all stored neatly in a compact case. This protects your unused earbud tips from loss, damage, and dirt.
Listen for changes as you move. A seal that breaks when you speak, turn your head or walk may be physically marginal even if it seemed fine while sitting still. Conversely, a comfortable bud that stays in place but produces thin sound may need a better seal rather than a tighter insertion.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Seal versus retention: two different checks
The Ear Tip Fit Test and Acoustic Seal Test are acoustic checks. They help determine whether the tip is sealing well enough for sound and noise cancellation. Retention is the separate question of whether the whole AirPod remains supported by your ear during movement.
That distinction explains why a test can pass while an AirPod still shifts during a particular activity. Use the test to select a promising tip and use the physical movement check to confirm comfort and stability. Neither result should be interpreted as a guarantee for every workout, head position or ear shape.
Tip sizes by AirPods Pro generation
| Model | Sizes listed by Apple | Test name | Replacement rule |
|---|---|---|---|
| AirPods Pro 1 | S, M, L | Ear Tip Fit Test | Use tips intended for Pro 1. |
| AirPods Pro 2 | XS, S, M, L | Ear Tip Fit Test | Use tips intended for Pro 2; the XS option may solve a crowded fit. |
| AirPods Pro 3 | XXS, XS, S, M, L | Acoustic Seal Test | Use tips intended for Pro 3; its construction is generation-specific. |
The sizes and test names above come from Apple’s support material. Apple says AirPods Pro ear tips are not interchangeable between generations because their materials and construction differ. Confirm the exact generation before ordering replacements; a size label such as “M” does not make a tip universal.
Apple’s UK guide on choosing Pro ear tips was published January 9, 2026, and lists the generation-specific size sets. Use the size marking on the tip itself and the model information for your AirPods rather than relying on a seller’s shorthand.
Cleaning for a more reliable grip
Clean detached ear tips
Remove the silicone tip from the AirPod before cleaning it. Apple’s instructions are to rinse the detached tip with water, wipe it with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth, and let it dry completely before reattaching it. Do not use soap or household cleaners on the tips. The full procedure is in How to clean your AirPods Pro.
Protect the AirPod itself
Keep the AirPod body and openings away from running water, sharp objects and abrasive materials. Wipe the exterior with an appropriate soft, dry, lint-free cloth and allow any moisture to evaporate. Do not push debris into the mesh or use a pointed tool to scrape it.

Dry after workouts
After exercise or exposure to sweat, soap, shampoo, makeup, sunscreen or lotion, dry your skin and the AirPods before wearing them again. A clean, dry contact surface gives you a fair size test; otherwise a tip may seem loose simply because the surfaces are slippery.
Apple’s cleaning guidance, published February 2, 2026, applies a different standard to the detached silicone tips and to the AirPods themselves. Rinsing is for the removed tips only; it is not permission to run the assembled earbuds under water.

What to do if the fit test passes but the AirPods still move
- Check insertion depth. Remove and reinsert the AirPod so the tip sits at the canal opening rather than being forced inward.
- Change the rotation. Rotate the stem toward your face and make a small angle change. The test measures acoustic sealing, while this adjustment improves how the body is supported.
- Repeat the movement interval. Walk for 10 to 15 minutes and observe the problem ear. A passing seal test does not measure every motion or activity.
- Try the neighboring size. If the bud works outward, try the next larger supplied tip; if pressure appears, go smaller. Retest after each change.
- Inspect the mounting area. Make sure the tip is fully seated on the AirPod and that its edge is not twisted or partially detached.
- Stop if there is pain. Remove the AirPod if you feel sharp pain, persistent pressure or irritation. Comfort is a required part of a usable fit.
Standard AirPods without removable Pro tips
Standard AirPods use a different, non-removable earbud construction. The Apple material covered here does not provide interchangeable size options or an equivalent fit-test procedure for those models. Do not transfer the Pro insertion steps, tip-size chart or test names to a standard AirPods model.
Because no model-specific evidence is established here for hooks, wings, covers or generic add-on tips, their performance cannot be promised. If standard AirPods repeatedly fall out, first verify that the model is being worn in the correct ear and that the housing and skin are clean and dry. For a definitive accessory choice, consult documentation specific to the exact model rather than assuming a Pro accessory will fit.
When replacement tips make sense
Buy replacement tips only after you have identified the AirPods Pro generation, tried the supplied sizes, and confirmed that your insertion and rotation are correct. Apple states that replacement tips are available and that each generation uses its own design. Search for the exact model, such as “AirPods Pro 2 replacement ear tips” or “AirPods Pro 3 replacement ear tips,” and verify the product’s compatibility before purchase.
Do not treat a third-party listing’s size label as proof of compatibility. A replacement that does not mount securely can detach in the ear or produce a misleading seal result. The safest baseline is a tip intended for the specific Pro generation and installed according to Apple’s instructions in Remove and attach ear tips on AirPods Pro.

A practical decision tree
- Falls out immediately: verify L/R placement, clean and dry the contact surfaces, reseat gently, rotate the stem toward your face, then try a larger supplied tip.
- Feels tight or painful: remove it, try a smaller tip, and avoid pushing it farther into the canal.
- Comfortable but poor sound or noise cancellation: adjust position, run the generation-appropriate fit or seal test, and try another size if the result remains poor.
- Only one ear fails: tune that ear independently; mixed sizes are acceptable.
- Passes the test but shifts during a specific activity: repeat the physical positioning and movement check for that activity. The software test is not a guarantee for every motion.
- Standard AirPods fall out: do not use the Pro size chart. Confirm the model and seek model-specific guidance; no validated add-on remedy is established by the instructions here.
Key points to remember
- Secure means stable and comfortable, not tightly wedged.
- Use the supplied tip sizes before considering replacements.
- Left and right ears may need different sizes.
- AirPods Pro 1 and 2 use Ear Tip Fit Test; AirPods Pro 3 uses Acoustic Seal Test.
- Generation-specific tips are not interchangeable.
- Clean and dry both the silicone tips and your skin before judging fit.
- A seal test supports sound and noise-cancellation checks but cannot guarantee that an earbud will stay in during every activity.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I stop AirPods Pro from falling out when I walk?
Reseat the tip gently at the ear-canal opening, rotate the stem toward your face, and adjust the angle. Walk for 10 to 15 minutes. If the AirPod still moves outward, try the next larger supplied tip; if it feels compressed, try a smaller one.

Should both ears use the same AirPods Pro tip size?
No. Test each ear independently. One ear may need a different size because ear shape and canal angle differ. Mixed sizes are acceptable when both sides are comfortable and stable.
What does a failed Ear Tip Fit Test mean?
It indicates that the selected tip or its position is not providing the acoustic seal needed for the test. Reseat and rotate the AirPod first, then try another supplied size and run the test again.
Can AirPods Pro pass the seal test and still fall out?
Yes. The Ear Tip Fit Test and Acoustic Seal Test evaluate acoustic sealing, not every movement of the AirPod body. Confirm retention by walking, turning your head and speaking for 10 to 15 minutes.

AirPods Pro 1 and AirPods Pro 2 use Apple’s Ear Tip Fit Test. AirPods Pro 3 uses the Acoustic Seal Test.
Can I use AirPods Pro 2 tips on AirPods Pro 1?
Apple says Pro ear tips are not interchangeable between generations because their materials and construction differ. Check the generation and buy tips intended for that exact model.
How should I clean AirPods Pro ear tips?
Detach the silicone tips, rinse them with water, wipe them with a soft dry lint-free cloth, and let them dry fully before reattaching. Do not use soap or household cleaners on the tips, and do not run the assembled AirPods under water.
Do standard AirPods have a fit test or interchangeable tip sizes?
The standard, non-Pro construction does not use the Pro-style removable tips, and the guidance here provides no equivalent sizing or fit-test procedure. Do not apply the Pro chart or assume third-party hooks and covers will solve the problem.

When should I buy replacement ear tips?
Only after trying the supplied sizes, correcting insertion and rotation, and confirming your exact Pro generation. Verify that any replacement is specifically designed for that generation; an M label alone does not establish compatibility.
The Bottom Line
For AirPods Pro, a secure fit comes from gentle insertion, the right rotation, a generation-specific tip and a separate movement check. Test each ear on its own, use Apple’s fit or seal test for acoustic confirmation, and keep the tips and skin clean and dry. If you use standard AirPods, do not assume Pro tips or accessories will fit.
