Use each assistant’s privacy or data-control setting—not a prompt asking the bot to opt you out. ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and personal Microsoft Copilot each provide a separate control, and each control generally applies to future conversations rather than deleting old chats or stopping every form of retention, safety review or product processing.
What an AI-training opt-out actually changes
A training switch controls one use of your conversation: whether the provider may use it to improve or train its models. It is not automatically a delete button, a no-storage guarantee, an eraser for data already used in training, or a ban on safety and security processing.
- Prospective effect: The documented controls below are primarily worded to exclude future conversations. They do not promise that previously collected chats are removed from a provider’s systems or from models already trained.
- History is separate: A chat can remain visible in your account after training is disabled. Deleting a conversation and disabling training are different actions.
- Feedback can override the ordinary path: Thumbs-up or thumbs-down reports may send the associated conversation into a separate review or improvement workflow.
- Safety and legal processing can continue: Providers may retain or inspect content for abuse prevention, security, debugging, compliance or service delivery even when it is excluded from model training.
- Account type matters: Consumer settings may not apply to work, school or commercial workspaces, where an administrator or contract controls data use.
For that reason, turn off the training control, avoid sending sensitive material when you do not need to, and use a temporary or incognito mode where the service offers one.

These settings are not a reliable way to rank one provider as “most private.” They control different data flows, and the practical result depends on whether you use a consumer account, an organization-managed account, voice or video features, file uploads, feedback tools, or connected applications.

ChatGPT: turn off “Improve the model for everyone”
Change the setting
- Sign in to ChatGPT.
- Open Settings.
- Select Data controls.
- Switch Improve the model for everyone off.
OpenAI’s documentation says that when this control is off, “your new conversations won’t be used to train OpenAI models.” The setting follows your account across devices when you are signed in. If you use ChatGPT while signed out, the choice is saved in that browser instead of being applied as an account-wide setting. Confirm the current labels in the OpenAI Data controls documentation if your interface differs.
Use Temporary Chat for a conversation that should not enter history
Start a Temporary Chat when you do not want the conversation to appear in your history or create or update memories. OpenAI says temporary conversations are not used to improve its models while they remain temporary, but they may be retained for up to 30 days for safety. If you save a temporary conversation, it becomes a regular chat and follows the normal data settings.
Do not submit feedback on a sensitive chat
For personal plans, selecting thumbs up or thumbs down can create an exception. OpenAI says the entire conversation associated with that feedback may still be used to train models even after you have opted out. Treat feedback as a separate data-sharing decision, not as a harmless rating.
Consumer and organization accounts differ
OpenAI says content from Business, Enterprise, Edu and Healthcare workspaces is not used for training by default. Your organization’s retention, security and administrator policies still apply, so a workspace user should follow the organization’s rules rather than assuming the consumer toggle is available or decisive.
Claude: disable Model Improvement and use Incognito chats
Turn off the ordinary improvement path
- Open Claude’s account controls.
- Go to Privacy Settings.
- Find Model Improvement.
- Leave the setting disabled if you do not want to allow the ordinary consumer improvement path.
Anthropic’s consumer documentation says chats and coding sessions may be used to improve models when a user chooses to allow it. It also identifies safety-flagged content and explicit programs such as Trusted Tester as separate circumstances that can lead to review or improvement use. Choose Incognito for a stronger conversation-level boundary
Anthropic states: “Your Incognito chats are not used to improve Claude, even if you have enabled Model Improvement in your Privacy Settings.” Incognito is therefore useful when you want the setting attached to a particular conversation rather than relying only on an account preference. It does not mean the service cannot process the conversation for basic operation, abuse prevention or required safety purposes.

Feedback has a long separate retention period
A thumbs-up or thumbs-down report is not merely an anonymous score. Anthropic says the related conversation is stored in its secure backend for up to five years and may be used for model training as permitted by law. Avoid sending feedback from a conversation that contains information you do not want routed through that workflow.
Commercial Claude products use different defaults
Anthropic says Claude for Work, its API and other commercial offerings are not used for training by default, subject to exceptions such as feedback or explicit permission. A commercial administrator should check the agreement and workspace controls instead of applying consumer Privacy Settings assumptions to an organization account.
Gemini: turn off Keep Activity
Web instructions
- Open Gemini while signed in to your personal Google account.
- Select Settings and help.
- Choose Activity.
- Select Turn off for Gemini Apps Activity, also labeled Keep Activity in Google’s explanations.
Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Hub says that when Keep Activity is off, future chats do not appear in Activity and are not used to train Google’s AI models unless you choose to send feedback.
Mobile instructions
- Open the Gemini mobile app.
- Tap your profile picture or initial.
- Open Gemini Apps Activity.
- Turn Keep Activity off.
Google frequently changes the mobile layout, so the profile menu is the reliable starting point even if the final label or location changes.
Understand the 72-hour retention window
Turning Keep Activity off is not immediate deletion. Google says chats may be retained for up to 72 hours so Gemini can provide responses, process feedback and maintain safety protections. That temporary copy is not necessarily visible in your Activity list.
Understand human review and longer retention
Google says conversations already reviewed by service providers are disconnected from your account and may be retained for up to three years. This is why turning off Activity cannot be described as a guarantee that no person or service provider will ever process a chat.

Keep Activity on has its own lifecycle
When Keep Activity remains on, Google may use activity to develop and improve services, including generative-model training. Google’s default auto-delete period is 18 months. You can change the retention setting, but auto-delete and training opt-out are separate decisions.
Expect feature trade-offs
Some connected apps are unavailable when Keep Activity is off. If a workflow depends on those integrations, decide whether the feature is worth the additional activity processing before disabling the setting.
Check separate controls for audio and Live features
Gemini’s audio and Gemini Live video or screen-sharing improvement setting is separate from Keep Activity. Google’s computer instructions describe that control as off by default. Verify it independently if you use voice, video or screen sharing; turning off text Activity alone does not prove that every modality has the same setting.

A Google Workspace administrator may manage Gemini activity and retention for a work or school account. If the profile is organization-managed, the consumer Gemini Apps Activity switch may be unavailable or may not override the organization’s policy.
Personal Microsoft Copilot: disable conversation and voice training
Copilot on the web
- Sign in to your personal Microsoft account at Copilot.
- Select your profile icon.
- Select your profile name.
- Open Privacy.
- Turn off Training on conversation activity.
- Turn off Training on voice conversations if you use voice.
Windows or macOS app
- Select the profile icon.
- Open Settings.
- Choose Privacy.
- Turn off both training controls.
Mobile app
- Open the menu.
- Select your profile.
- Choose Account, then Privacy.
- Turn off Training on conversation activity and Training on voice conversations.
Microsoft says opting out excludes future conversation activity from training these AI models. It does not promise removal of earlier conversations or disable every other use of data. Advertising, digital safety, security, compliance and general product or system improvement can remain active. Personalization and memory are separate controls, so review those settings if your goal is to prevent Copilot from tailoring responses or retaining remembered details.
Check which Copilot instructions apply to your version
The Microsoft page documenting these paths says an updated Copilot app and web experience became available on August 18, 2026, and that the page covers only the older app version. Use the right control for the outcome you want:

After changing a setting, read the provider’s retention and deletion page and separately remove conversations that you no longer want in your account. Do not infer a deletion guarantee from a training switch unless the provider explicitly makes that promise.

Feedback buttons
All four services treat feedback as a special signal. A rating can attach the full conversation, not just the sentence you rated, to a review or improvement process. If a chat contains confidential material, do not use thumbs-up or thumbs-down unless you have confirmed the provider’s current feedback policy.
Safety review
Opting out of training does not prevent automated or human safety systems from evaluating content for abuse, fraud, self-harm, malware, policy violations or legal compliance. Short-term retention for those purposes can continue even when the conversation is absent from your visible history.
Files and images
A text-training switch may not answer how uploaded files, images or extracted document text are retained. Check the provider’s current settings for file storage, chat history and data export, and avoid uploading secrets that do not need cloud processing.

Voice, video and screen sharing
Voice and visual inputs can have separate improvement controls. Gemini documents a separate audio and Live improvement setting; Copilot exposes a separate voice-conversation training switch. If you use these modes, inspect their controls independently rather than assuming the text setting covers them.

Coding sessions and connected tools
Anthropic’s consumer explanation expressly includes coding sessions in its discussion of model improvement. Gemini may disable some connected apps when Keep Activity is off. A training setting therefore does not guarantee that every tool call, integration or execution log follows the same retention path as a normal text reply.
Consumer, business and managed-account checks
Before changing anything, identify the account you are using:
- Personal account: You can usually change the provider’s consumer privacy setting yourself.
- Work or school account: An administrator may set retention, disable the control, or apply a contract-based no-training default. Ask the administrator which policy governs the account.
- API or commercial product: Data-use terms can differ from the consumer chatbot, often with no-training-by-default language and separate feedback exceptions.
- Shared device: A signed-out setting may be saved only in that browser, while a signed-in setting can follow your account to other devices.
Do not assume that signing into a personal account inside a company browser changes the provider’s account category; the account identity and product tier are what generally determine the policy.

A practical privacy checklist
- Identify whether the account is personal, work, school, API or another commercial tier.
- Open the provider’s documented privacy or data-control page from the links above.
- Disable the training, model-improvement or Keep Activity control.
- Disable the separate voice, audio, video or screen-sharing improvement control when applicable.
- Choose Temporary Chat or Incognito for conversations that should not enter ordinary history.
- Do not submit thumbs-up/down feedback on a sensitive conversation.
- Delete old chats separately if you no longer need them.
- Review memory, personalization, connected-app and file-upload settings.
- Record the date and setting you changed so you can recheck it after an app redesign or account-policy change.
If the setting is missing or does not appear to work
You cannot find the menu
Confirm that you are signed in to the intended account, update the app, try the web version, and check whether the account is managed by an organization. Copilot’s cited instructions are explicitly for an older app version, and Gemini’s labels vary between web and mobile.
Old chats still appear
That is expected for a prospective training opt-out. Delete the conversations separately; their continued visibility does not prove that the new setting failed.
You used feedback after opting out
Review the provider’s feedback policy. ChatGPT and Claude both document feedback exceptions that can make the associated conversation eligible for model improvement or training. Avoid repeating the feedback action on sensitive chats.
You need a stronger boundary than an opt-out
Use a provider’s temporary or incognito mode, omit confidential information, and use a locally run system when your organization requires that prompts never leave its controlled environment. A cloud-provider toggle cannot enforce a local-storage or zero-processing guarantee.

Your organization requires a written guarantee
Do not rely on a consumer screenshot. Obtain the applicable business or education terms, administrator policy and retention schedule, then verify whether feedback, abuse monitoring, backups and support access are covered.
