If a weather app is draining your Android battery, first confirm it is actually a high-use app in Settings > Battery > Battery usage. Then change one control at a time: limit the app’s background use, reduce its location permission to the smallest scope that still provides the features you want, and test Battery Saver when you need a broader temporary limit. These changes can delay refreshes, forecasts, or alerts, so check that weather information still arrives when you need it.

Android menus differ by phone maker and version. The Pixel path below is Google’s documented example; on another phone, search Settings for Battery usage, App battery usage, or Location permissions, then use the equivalent control supplied for that model.

Start by proving the weather app is the problem

Do not disable several features before checking the evidence. A bright display, weak cellular signal, navigation, video, a recently restored phone, or another app can consume more power than weather updates. Battery percentages also describe the period shown by your phone, not a universal weather-app average.

Pixel: open the per-app battery screen

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Battery, then Battery usage.
  3. Choose the app view, shown by Google as View by apps.
  4. Find and open the weather app.
  5. Review its foreground and background activity and the Allow background usage control, if your Android version displays it.

Google notes that some steps apply only to particular Android versions. The wording and location of the controls can change, and Pixel labels are not universal Android labels.

Other Android phones

Use the Settings search box for battery usage or open the battery page and select an app. Manufacturers may place the control under App battery usage, Battery optimization, Background activity, or a similarly named menu. If the phone does not expose a per-app switch, follow the manufacturer’s support instructions for that model rather than selecting a random “cleaner” or task-killer app.

How to interpret what you see

  • High background use: the app is doing work while you are not actively viewing it, making background controls the logical next test.
  • Mostly foreground use: the app may be using power because its screen stayed open, a widget was active, or you were viewing radar or video. Background restriction may have little effect.
  • Low weather-app use: leave its settings alone and investigate the next largest consumer.
  • Unusual use immediately after an update or restore: let the phone finish setup, install pending updates, and recheck the battery page before drawing a conclusion.

Take a screenshot or note the reading, then change only one setting. A single-variable test makes it possible to tell which change helped.

Compare readings fairly

Use the same battery page and, as far as practical, compare similar periods of normal use. A reading taken after a long radar session is not directly comparable with one taken while the phone sat idle. Note whether the app was open, whether a widget was visible, and whether you were traveling between locations. These notes do not measure a universal battery rate; they simply help you avoid blaming the weather app for a different workload.

Limit background activity for the weather app

If the weather app is a clear outlier and you do not need it to refresh continuously, use the per-app background-use control exposed by your phone. On a Pixel, open the app’s page from Settings > Battery > Battery usage > View by apps, then review Allow background usage. Google’s Pixel guidance recommends leaving apps set to Optimized; do not assume that exact label or recommendation exists on every manufacturer’s software.

Choose the least disruptive setting

  • Keep Optimized (or the manufacturer’s default): the best first choice when use is normal or you need timely updates.
  • Restrict background use: appropriate when the app is consuming substantial power while idle and delayed refreshes are acceptable.
  • Use a manufacturer-specific “deep sleeping” or similar mode cautiously: it can be more aggressive than ordinary optimization and may prevent notifications until you open the app. The exact behavior is model-specific.

Google warns that restricting background activity can delay an app’s work. For a weather app, that can mean a forecast tile updates later, a widget remains stale, or a severe-weather notification arrives later than it otherwise would. The setting reduces opportunity for background work; it does not prove that background work was the original cause.

Test the result

  1. Record the battery screen’s current reading and the weather app’s notification requirements.
  2. Apply the least aggressive background restriction available.
  3. Use the phone normally through the period in which you noticed the drain.
  4. Open the weather app and pull to refresh, if it offers that action.
  5. Check Battery usage again and verify whether the app’s background share fell.
  6. Confirm that widgets, scheduled updates, and alerts still meet your needs.

If the reading does not improve, restore the previous setting before trying a different control. If it improves but alerts become unreliable, use the default optimized setting and look at location access or the app’s own refresh interval instead.

Some weather apps also expose their own update interval, notification categories, or automatic-location toggle. Review those options only after identifying the app as a high background user. A longer interval or a fixed city can reduce automatic work when the app supports it, but do not assume every app offers those controls.

Review the weather app’s location permission

Location is not automatically the cause of battery drain. A weather app can use a manually selected city, a one-time location lookup, foreground location while open, or background location for automatic changes. Check the battery screen and the app’s permission rather than assuming that every weather app needs continuous tracking.

Open the permission page

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Apps (or Apps & notifications on some versions).
  3. Select the weather app.
  4. Tap Permissions, then Location.
  5. Choose the narrowest option that still supports the feature you want. Available choices depend on Android version and the app, and can include options such as denying access, allowing access only while using the app, or allowing broader access.

Google Play’s developer guidance says apps should request the minimum location scope needed and prefer foreground access where possible. That is a design principle, not proof that a particular weather app is misusing location.

Match permission to your use case

What you need Practical permission approach What may change
Weather for one fixed town Use a manually selected location if the app provides that feature; otherwise use the least broad permission that works. The app may not automatically follow you to a new city.
Weather only when you open the app Prefer an option limited to app use, when offered. Widgets or alerts that require background location may stop or update later.
Automatic local forecasts and location-based alerts Keep the permission required by that specific app, then control background battery use separately. Reducing permission can make location-based behavior less automatic.

Do not promise that manually selecting a city is available: verify the option inside the weather app. If you deny location and the app still shows a local forecast, it may be using the saved city, IP-based approximation, or another method; the app’s documentation determines the exact behavior.

Why background location can affect battery

Android 8.0 (API level 26) and later limit background apps’ location updates to only a few times each hour. This is a platform limit, not a measured frequency for every weather app. A weather app that requests location repeatedly may therefore receive fewer updates in the background, while still doing enough work to matter on a particular phone.

Android Developers makes that warning about sustained near-real-time location behavior generally. It does not establish how much power your weather app uses. If your app shows high background use, changing permission or its own location-refresh setting can be a reasonable test; if it does not, location is unlikely to explain the battery reading by itself.

Use Battery Saver as a temporary, broad test

Battery Saver reduces or turns off background activity across the phone. It is useful when you need to stretch remaining charge or determine whether limiting background work changes the symptom, but it is not a weather-app-specific repair.

Turn it on

On many phones, open Settings > Battery > Battery Saver, or swipe down for Quick Settings and tap Battery Saver. The label, schedule, and available options vary by manufacturer. If you cannot find it, search Settings for Battery Saver.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Understand the weather trade-off

Google warns that Battery Saver can delay visual effects, features, network connections, and apps. Consequently, a weather widget may refresh later and a notification may not arrive on its usual schedule. No reliable percentage of battery saved by Battery Saver for weather apps has been established, so treat the result as device- and usage-dependent.

  • Use Battery Saver before travel or when the battery is low if delayed weather data is acceptable.
  • Check a forecast manually when severe weather is possible rather than assuming an alert will be immediate.
  • Turn it off when timely background updates are important, then address the individual app instead.

Because Battery Saver affects many apps at once, it is useful as a short comparison: note whether the weather app’s background activity and the phone’s overall drain change, then decide whether a narrower per-app setting is preferable. Do not leave a broad restriction enabled merely because it hides the symptom if it also interferes with calls, messaging, navigation, or other time-sensitive functions.

Keep the app and Android current

If restricting background use or location does not explain the drain, install available Android and weather-app updates. Updates can correct battery or notification bugs, and an outdated app may not behave correctly with the current Android release.

Troubleshoot by symptom

Symptom Likely next check What not to assume
The app ranks high in background use. Apply the least aggressive per-app background restriction and retest. That every percentage point came from location.
The app is high in foreground use. Check screen-on time, widgets, radar/video views, and whether the app was left open. That a background limit will solve foreground usage.
Battery Saver reduces drain but alerts are late. Turn it off when alerts matter; use a narrower per-app change instead. That Battery Saver permanently fixes the app.
Changing location permission breaks automatic local weather. Restore the permission needed by the app or select a fixed city if the app supports it. That all weather apps offer the same location modes.
The weather app is not a major battery consumer. Investigate the next app, display, signal conditions, or system process on the battery page. That the weather app must be responsible because the problem appeared near its installation.
Drain persists after updates and a restart. Use the phone maker’s support instructions for the exact model and Android version. That a generic Pixel menu path applies to the device.
A widget is stale after a restriction. Restore optimized background use or check the app’s widget and refresh settings. That the widget is broken permanently.
Alerts arrive only after opening the app. Check background use, Battery Saver status, notification permission, and location requirements. That a battery percentage alone identifies the cause.

A low-risk order of operations

  1. Measure: check Battery usage by app and note background versus foreground activity.
  2. Adjust one app control: keep the default optimized setting unless the weather app is genuinely high and delayed updates are acceptable.
  3. Review location: reduce scope only as far as your desired forecast, widget, and alert features allow.
  4. Run a short Battery Saver test: observe whether weather refreshes and alerts remain timely enough.
  5. Update and restart: install Android and app updates, reboot, and check the battery page again.
  6. Escalate: contact the device manufacturer when the drain continues or the available controls do not match these examples.

Do not force-stop or uninstall system components as a first response. Those actions can create notification and update problems without identifying the cause. The battery screen, permission page, and one-change-at-a-time testing provide a safer diagnosis.

What to expect after you fix it

A successful change does not necessarily make the weather app disappear from the battery list. It should reduce unnecessary background work relative to the earlier reading while preserving the features you chose to keep. A weather app may still use power when you open it, refresh a radar map, obtain a location, display a widget, or deliver an alert. The practical goal is the smallest background and location scope that keeps the forecast and warnings useful—not zero battery activity.

If a setting makes an alert or refresh too late, reverse that setting and choose a less restrictive option. Android’s controls are deliberately a trade-off: less background work can extend runtime, while more access can provide fresher, more automatic weather information.

When to contact the phone maker

Use the manufacturer’s support instructions when the battery page shows abnormal drain from the weather app after updates and a restart, when the phone lacks the controls described here, or when changing one setting produces unexpected behavior. Tell support the phone model, Android version, weather-app version, the battery-use period you observed, and which setting changes you tested. Those details help distinguish a model-specific menu issue from an app or system problem.

Will restricting background use stop emergency weather alerts?

It may delay or prevent notifications, depending on the app and phone. If timely alerts are essential, keep the app’s optimized or required background setting and verify its alert behavior after any change.

Why does my phone not show the Pixel battery menus?

Android manufacturers change menu names and locations, and Google’s documented steps apply only to certain Pixel and Android versions. Search Settings for Battery usage or consult the support instructions for your exact model.

Is a power bank a solution to a weather app battery drain?

A charger or power bank replenishes energy but does not reduce the app’s consumption. Diagnose and limit background or location activity instead.

How often can Android update location for a background weather app?

On Android 8.0 (API level 26) and later, background apps are limited to location updates only a few times each hour. That is a platform limit, not a guaranteed frequency for every weather app.

Should I deny location permission completely?

Only if the features you want still work without it. Choose the narrowest option that supports your use, such as app-only access or a manually selected city when the app provides that choice.

Does Battery Saver fix the weather app permanently?

No. Battery Saver is a broad, often temporary limit that can delay network connections, features, and notifications. If alerts matter, use it as a test or low-battery measure and prefer a narrower app setting.

What if the app is high in foreground battery use?

Check whether its screen, radar, video, or widget was active. Restricting background work may not reduce power consumed while you are actively using those features.

The Bottom Line

Confirm the weather app is genuinely high in background battery use, then change one setting at a time. Keep background use optimized unless the app is an outlier, narrow location access only as far as your forecast and alert needs allow, and use Battery Saver as a temporary broad measure. If drain continues after updating and restarting, follow the phone maker’s model-specific support guidance.
