Cleaning the lint trap removes only one possible source of odor. Musty smells usually persist because moisture, detergent film, hair, coins, trapped water, or residue remain in the door gasket, dispenser, drum, or drain system. Clean those areas, run the washer’s model-approved cleaning cycle with a compatible washer cleaner, correct the detergent dose, and let the machine dry between loads.
Why a clean lint trap does not remove a musty smell
A lint trap or pump filter catches some debris, but it does not clean every surface that stays wet. Odor can remain in places that are easy to overlook:
- Front-load door gasket: The folds can hold standing water, lint, hair, coins, socks, detergent, and fabric-softener residue.
- Detergent drawer and housing: Concentrated detergent or softener can dry into a film, while water left in the drawer keeps the compartment damp.
- Drum or outer tub: Residue and microbial growth may remain even when the visible drum looks clean.
- Drain hose and standpipe: An incorrectly positioned hose can allow drained water to siphon back into the washer.
- Wet laundry and closed surfaces: Leaving a load in the machine or closing the door immediately after a cycle traps humidity.
Manufacturers describe the same underlying pattern: detergent residue and trapped moisture create conditions in which odor-causing microbes can grow. The cure is therefore a moisture-and-residue cleanup, not another pass over the lint filter.

- Read the washer owner’s manual before adding any cleaner. Cycle names, chemical restrictions, and dispenser-removal instructions vary by model.
- Never mix bleach with vinegar, ammonia, or another cleaner. Use one product at a time and follow its label and the appliance instructions.
- Unplug the washer before reaching into a filter, hose connection, or moving component.
- Wear gloves when removing decomposing residue or visible mold, and ventilate the room.
- If a cleaner’s label conflicts with the appliance manual, follow the manual or contact the manufacturer before proceeding.
1. Clean every fold of the door gasket
This step applies mainly to front-load washers. Open the door and pull the rubber gasket away from the glass one section at a time. Inspect the entire circumference, including the lowest folds where water collects.

Remove trapped objects and residue
- Pull out lint, hair, coins, socks, and other objects by hand.
- Wipe standing water from the bottom of the gasket.
- Use a soft cloth to remove detergent and fabric-softener buildup from each fold and the channel behind the seal.
- Clean the mating surfaces around the door opening, where a thin film may remain even after the rubber looks clear.
- Wipe the gasket dry and leave it exposed while the rest of the washer dries.
Whirlpool identifies detergent and fabric-softener residue in the gasket as a source of unpleasant smells. Do not stretch, puncture, or pry the seal with a sharp tool; a damaged gasket can leak and requires replacement according to the model’s service guidance.
2. Empty and wash the detergent dispenser
Remove the detergent drawer only as the owner manual describes. Some drawers have a release tab; forcing one can break the housing.
- Take out removable inserts for detergent, bleach, and softener.
- Rinse the parts with warm water and wipe away the softened film.
- Clean the cavity and the water-inlet openings above the drawer with a soft brush or cloth. Do not push debris into the passages.
- Dry the drawer and cavity before reinstalling them.
- Run the drawer open or ajar between loads if the manual permits.
A clean drawer cannot compensate for an overfilled dispenser. Use only the compartment intended for the product and do not pour concentrated liquid into a place reserved for powder unless the manual says it is compatible.

3. Check detergent type and dose
Too much detergent or fabric softener can leave a film that feeds odor. LG lists excess detergent and softener as causes of a musty washer. Whirlpool Product Help warns that non-HE detergent in a high-efficiency machine can leave film residue.
Match the product to the machine
- Use detergent labeled for high-efficiency machines when the washer requires HE detergent.
- Measure the amount specified by both the detergent directions and the appliance manual. Do not use a larger dose because a load looks heavily soiled unless the instructions allow it.
- Reduce or stop fabric softener if residue keeps returning; confirm any alternative treatment is approved for the machine.
- Do not assume a full drum needs the maximum dose. Load size, water hardness, soil level, and detergent concentration can change the required amount.
If you recently changed detergent, compare the old and new labels for concentration and HE compatibility. A new product can expose an existing buildup rather than create a new mechanical fault.
4. Run the washer’s cleaning cycle
Look for a cycle labeled Clean Washer, Tub Clean, BasketClean, or an equivalent name. Use the exact cycle and procedure in the owner manual; some machines require an empty drum, a particular water temperature, or a specific dispenser compartment.

- Remove all laundry and confirm that the drum is empty.
- Add a commercial washing-machine cleaner in the form and location specified by the product and appliance instructions.
- Select the model-approved cleaning cycle. Do not substitute a normal wash if the manual requires a dedicated maintenance program.
- Allow the cycle to finish completely, including draining and spinning.
- Inspect the gasket and dispenser afterward. Wipe away loosened residue and dry the interior.
Cleaner formats and compatibility
Tablets, powders, and liquids can all be suitable when the appliance and product instructions agree. Compare the following before buying or using a cleaner:

GE recommends a commercial washer-cleaning product and specifically names Tide Washing Machine Cleaner for applicable models. GE also notes that models without BasketClean may use a commercial cleaner according to their instructions. LG recommends an oxygen-based drum cleaner used according to the manufacturer’s directions. These recommendations are model-dependent, so confirm your own manual before selecting a product.
Why vinegar is not a default solution
Do not add vinegar simply because the washer smells. Whirlpool cautions that repeated vinegar use can damage washer components and does not recommend it as a washer-cleaning product. Never combine vinegar with bleach or another chemical. If your manual does not explicitly approve a homemade mixture, use the specified commercial cleaner instead.

5. Dry the washer after every load
Cleaning removes existing residue; drying prevents the next odor cycle. LG explains that closing the door and drawer traps moisture and detergent residue, creating an environment for odor-causing microbes. Whirlpool gives similar ventilation advice.
- Remove wet laundry as soon as the wash cycle ends.
- Wipe water from the gasket, glass, or lid area when it remains visibly wet.
- Leave a front-load door open between cycles. If children or pets could reach the opening, use a manufacturer-approved safety approach that still permits ventilation.
- Leave a top-load lid open between cycles.
- Leave the detergent drawer open or ajar where the manual permits.
- Keep the room ventilated enough for the interior and drawer to dry.
Do not close the door or lid just to hide the smell. A closed, damp cavity slows evaporation and lets residue remain active on the surfaces you just cleaned.
6. Inspect the drain hose and standpipe
If the odor returns quickly after a cleaning cycle, check the drain installation rather than repeatedly adding cleaner. GE warns that pushing the drain hose too far into the standpipe can siphon drained water back into the washer and cause a musty odor.

- Locate the drain hose where it enters the standpipe or drain connection.
- Compare its insertion depth, support, and air gap with the washer’s installation instructions.
- Make sure the hose is not sealed airtight into the pipe if the manual requires an air gap.
- Correct only what the manual permits; do not guess a universal depth or secure the hose in a way that restricts drainage.
- Run an empty rinse or the approved cleaning cycle and observe whether water drains normally.
A hose problem can leave the machine smelling even after the gasket, drawer, and drum have been cleaned because contaminated water is reintroduced during draining.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency states, “A moldy odor suggests that mold is growing in the building and should be investigated.” In a washer, the practical first response is to find the moisture source, clean hard surfaces with detergent and water where appropriate, and dry them completely.
Signs that ordinary cleaning may not be enough
- Visible mold remains after cleaning the accessible gasket, drawer, and drum.
- The odor returns immediately after an approved cleaning cycle and thorough drying.
- Water is leaking from the door seal, dispenser, hose, or beneath the machine.
- The drain hose or standpipe cannot be matched confidently to the installation instructions.
- The washer will not drain, leaves standing water, or produces an unusual mechanical noise.
Stop using chemical treatments that are not approved for the appliance. Contact the manufacturer or a qualified appliance technician when a component, leak, or drain installation may be responsible. EPA advises consulting a specialist when cleaning an item is uncertain or the problem cannot be resolved safely.

How to keep the odor from returning
- After each load, remove laundry promptly and ventilate the washer.
- Wipe moisture and residue from the gasket, lid area, or glass when you see it.
- Keep the detergent drawer open where allowed, and clean it whenever residue appears.
- Use the correct HE detergent and measured dose instead of treating odor with extra soap.
- Run the model’s cleaning cycle at the interval stated in the owner manual, or whenever the machine indicates that maintenance is due.
- Recheck the drain installation if odor begins immediately after draining or returns despite correct cleaning and drying.
- Keep the lint trap clean, but treat it as one part of washer maintenance rather than the entire odor solution.
When to call for help
Manufacturer support is the right next step when the manual does not identify a compatible cleaner, the cleaning cycle fails to complete, or a drain-hose arrangement is unclear. A qualified appliance technician should inspect persistent leaks, damaged gaskets, blocked drains, standing water, or odors that return immediately after a complete approved cleaning and drying routine. Do not continue experimenting with bleach, vinegar, ammonia, or mixed products while waiting for service.
The reliable sequence is straightforward: clean the gasket and dispenser, remove residue from the tub with the approved cycle and cleaner, correct detergent use, verify the drain hose, and dry the washer after every load. That addresses the odor sources a lint-trap cleaning cannot reach.
