Stop playback if the stylus is jumping repeatedly. Remove the stylus guard, confirm that the stylus is present and undamaged, place the turntable level and away from vibration, then reset anti-skate to 0 and rebalance the tonearm. Set tracking force to the cartridge manufacturer’s specification with a stylus-force gauge, set anti-skate to that measured value as a starting point, and clean both the stylus and record. Test another record before replacing hardware; a scratch, warp, debris, or a tonearm-lift obstruction can affect only one disc.

What to do immediately when a record skips

A single jump can be caused by dust or a damaged groove, but repeated skipping is mistracking: the stylus is losing reliable contact with the groove. Letting it loop over the same spot can mark the vinyl and can make the stylus strike the record surface when it lands.

  1. Stop the platter. Lift the tonearm with its cueing lever or stop the turntable rather than allowing the stylus to jump repeatedly.
  2. Remove the stylus guard. A guard left in place can interfere with the stylus or make the arm appear correctly lowered when it is not.
  3. Look at the stylus under a bright light. It should be present, centered, straight and free of a visible fuzz of dust. Do not touch the cantilever with a finger.
  4. Move the turntable to a firm, level surface. Keep it away from a speaker cabinet, subwoofer, unstable shelf and foot-traffic vibration.
  5. Try a different record. If only one disc skips, inspect that record for a scratch, warp, embedded dirt or pressing defect before changing the turntable setup.

If the stylus is visibly bent, loose or missing, do not play another record. Replace the stylus or have the cartridge inspected first.

Why a turntable skips or mistracks

The stylus must remain in the groove with the correct downward force while the tonearm follows the record’s changing path. Several small errors can reduce that contact: too little tracking force, incorrect anti-skate, an unlevel plinth, vibration, contamination, a damaged stylus or interference from the cueing mechanism.

Too little force is not a “gentler” setting. The stylus can lose contact on loud passages and skate across the groove. Cambridge Audio describes the consequence this way: “Too light: The stylus will incorrectly track the record groove causing inconsistencies with playback, skipping during tracks.” Excessive force increases contact pressure and wear, so the correct setting is the cartridge maker’s specified range, not a universal number.

The Council on Library and Information Resources explains the risk of repeated mistracking: “It is important to set the tracking force high enough to avoid mistracking—a condition in which the stylus leaves the groove and may then return, slamming into the record surface.” Stop a skip that repeats rather than waiting for it to resolve by itself.

Diagnose the pattern before changing parts

What you observe Most useful interpretation First action
Every record skips, especially during loud passages Setup, tracking-force, anti-skate, vibration or stylus problem Level and isolate the table, then redo the complete tonearm setup
Only one record skips at the same location Scratch, warp, embedded debris or a defective pressing is more likely Clean and inspect that disc; test it on another correctly set-up turntable if available
The arm jumps toward the center Insufficient groove contact, incorrect anti-skate or a damaged groove Verify tracking force, then set anti-skate from that measured value
The arm jumps outward External vibration, excessive anti-skate or a record defect Check speaker placement and anti-skate, then inspect the disc
Skipping began after moving the turntable Changed level, counterweight position, cable tension or cueing alignment Re-level the table and rebalance the tonearm from zero
Visible fuzz on the stylus or crackle with dust pops Contamination on the stylus or record Clean both contact surfaces with the correct brushes
The stylus appears to lower but does not fully settle Tonearm lift bridge is touching the arm Check that the arm clears the lift bridge when the cue is fully down

Set up the turntable in the correct order

Do these steps in order. Balancing the arm or adjusting anti-skate before setting the cartridge’s tracking force can leave the final result wrong.

1. Level and isolate the turntable

Place the turntable on a rigid, stable surface. Use a small bubble level on the platter or the turntable’s designated leveling area, and adjust the feet or the support until it is level in both directions. Do not level it by placing loose material under the platter or by tilting the platter itself.

Keep the table physically separated from speakers and subwoofers. Low-frequency energy can feed back through the furniture and make the stylus jump even when the arm settings are correct. A rigid shelf, a properly installed wall shelf or a suitable isolation platform can help; isolation cannot compensate for a bent stylus or incorrect tracking force.

2. Inspect the stylus and remove the guard

With the motor off, remove the stylus guard before lowering the arm. Check that the stylus assembly is fully seated in the cartridge and that the cantilever is not leaning to one side. If you see a crack, bend, detached tip or a cantilever that has been pushed into the cartridge body, stop troubleshooting with records and arrange a replacement or professional inspection.

3. Set anti-skate to zero

Turn the anti-skate control to 0 before balancing the arm. This removes the lateral compensation force while you establish the arm’s neutral balance. If your turntable uses a hanging weight, place it in the zero position specified by its manual; do not assume that the printed dial on another model works the same way.

4. Balance the tonearm and zero the counterweight scale

Unlock the arm from its rest, support it carefully, and use the cueing lever so it cannot drop onto the platter. Rotate the counterweight until the arm floats horizontally, with the stylus just clear of the platter. The arm should neither rise nor fall when you release it gently.

Hold the counterweight still and rotate only its numbered indicator ring to 0. This sets the scale’s reference point; it does not yet set tracking force. Fluance’s setup guidance calls proper tonearm balancing and tracking-force adjustment “the most important step when setting up your turntable.”

5. Dial in the cartridge’s specified tracking force

Rotate the entire counterweight to the tracking-force value recommended for your exact cartridge and stylus. Use the cartridge maker’s stated value or range, including any qualification for a replacement stylus. A model-specific number must not be generalized: Cambridge Audio’s Alva TT V2 manual revision dated 2026 specifies 2 grams for its supplied cartridge, but 2 grams is not a universal recommendation.

Whenever possible, verify the setting with a digital stylus-force gauge. Put the gauge on the platter at approximately record height, tare it, lower the stylus onto the sensor using the cueing lever, and read the force. Repeat the measurement after making a small adjustment. Measuring at record height matters because the arm’s angle can change the reading.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the measured value differs from the dial, trust the gauge and correct the counterweight or the gauge’s setup according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Do not press the stylus onto the sensor by hand, and keep the gauge’s platform clear of the platter spindle.

6. Set anti-skate after tracking force

Once the measured tracking force is correct, set anti-skate to the same number as a starting point on turntables whose control is calibrated that way. For example, a measured 1.8 grams would start at an anti-skate setting of 1.8, if the manual uses gram-equivalent markings.

This is a starting point, not a promise that every design will track best at an identical number. Follow the turntable or cartridge maker’s instructions if they specify a different procedure. Make changes in small increments only after the force is verified. Setting anti-skate first, or using it to compensate for an incorrectly balanced arm, can make the stylus pull toward one groove wall and worsen skipping or channel imbalance.

7. Confirm the cueing mechanism is clear

Lower the cueing lever fully with the motor off and observe from the side. The tonearm must clear the lift bridge or arm rest once the cue is down. If the bridge remains high enough to touch the arm, the stylus may repeatedly lift or lose pressure. Consult the turntable manual for the bridge-height adjustment; do not force the arm down.

Clean the stylus and the record safely

Clean the stylus

Use a purpose-made stylus brush, moving only from the rear of the cartridge toward the front in the direction specified by the brush maker. Never brush side to side across the cantilever, scrape the tip with a fingernail or use household solvent. If debris is hardened or the stylus is too delicate to inspect confidently, have a technician clean it.

Clean the record

Use an anti-static record brush to remove loose particles before playback. Hold the disc by its edges and label, not by the playing surface. For grime embedded in the groove, use a record-cleaning method and fluid designed for vinyl, following that product’s instructions and allowing the record to dry completely. A wet or residue-coated groove can attract more dust and continue to mistrack.

Cleaning cannot repair a scratch, a permanently warped disc or a groove damaged by earlier mistracking. It can, however, distinguish a contamination problem from a hardware problem without exposing more records to an incorrectly set stylus.

Separate a record fault from a turntable fault

After setup and cleaning, play a known-clean record that normally tracks well. Then replay the suspect disc at the same section. If several records play normally and one skips at the same groove, examine that disc under a strong light for a repeating scratch, a visible warp, dried residue or a foreign particle. A defective pressing can also produce a repeatable skip that follows the record rather than the turntable.

Do not use a damaged record as your only test. A severe warp can make the cartridge body or tonearm height change dramatically once per revolution, while an embedded object can deflect the stylus. Testing another record tells you whether the symptom follows the disc or the setup.

If every record skips after the force has been measured, anti-skate set, the stylus cleaned and vibration removed, suspect a worn or damaged stylus, a loose cartridge, a bent tonearm, a faulty bearing or another mechanical problem. At that point, stop playing valuable records and contact the turntable or cartridge manufacturer for service guidance.

When alignment or a replacement is appropriate

Cartridge alignment is not the first response to ordinary skipping. Establish level placement, tracking force, anti-skate, cleanliness and cueing clearance first. If the cartridge has been installed recently, the cantilever is visibly skewed in its body, or distortion is strongest near the inner grooves even after correct force and anti-skate, use the alignment dimensions and protractor specified for that tonearm and cartridge.

Replace a stylus when it is visibly damaged, when the manufacturer’s replacement interval or wear inspection calls for it, or when correct setup cannot stop mistracking across clean, undamaged records. A replacement stylus must be compatible with the cartridge body; changing to an arbitrary force setting for a different stylus can create a new tracking problem.

Can a bad stylus damage vinyl?

Yes. A worn, bent or contaminated stylus can contact the groove walls unevenly. Repeated mistracking is especially risky because the tip can leave the groove and land abruptly on the record surface. Excessive tracking force also increases wear, while too little force can be just as damaging through repeated loss of contact. The practical protection is to stop repeated skipping, set the cartridge maker’s force accurately, keep both surfaces clean and replace a damaged stylus before further playback.

Common mistakes that make skipping worse

  • Turning up anti-skate to stop an inward jump without measuring force. This treats a symptom and can overload the opposite groove wall.
  • Setting force by the counterweight number alone. Dials can be inaccurate or zeroed incorrectly; verify with a gauge at record height.
  • Balancing with the stylus guard installed. The guard changes the arm’s balance and can hide a clearance problem.
  • Using a household brush or solvent. It can bend the cantilever, leave residue or create static.
  • Testing only the damaged disc. A scratch or warp can imitate a setup fault; always use another record.
  • Playing through a repeating skip. The stylus can damage the same groove each time it jumps.
  • Ignoring furniture and speaker vibration. A perfectly adjusted arm can still mistrack when low-frequency energy reaches the plinth.
  • Forcing the cueing lift down. If the bridge is mechanically high, forcing the arm risks bending the assembly instead of correcting the obstruction.

A compact maintenance and troubleshooting routine

Before each listening session, check that the stylus guard is removed, the stylus looks clean, the platter and record are free of loose dust, and the turntable has not moved on its support. Brush the record before lowering the stylus. After moving the turntable, changing the cartridge or replacing the stylus, repeat leveling, balancing, force measurement and anti-skate setup rather than assuming the previous settings remain valid.

Keep a note of the cartridge model, its recommended tracking-force range, the measured force and the anti-skate starting value. That record makes it easier to identify a change after transport or a stylus replacement and prevents repeated guesswork.

When to stop troubleshooting at home

Stop using the turntable and seek manufacturer or qualified service assistance if the stylus is bent or loose, the tonearm will not float, the counterweight cannot be zeroed, the arm bearings feel rough, the cueing bridge cannot clear the arm, or every clean record still mistracks after a measured setup. Continuing to test with valuable records can turn a repairable setup problem into permanent groove wear.
