If a smart speaker keeps waiting for another request, turn off its conversation feature—not the microphone—first. On an Echo, disable Follow-Up Mode; in Google Home, disable Continued Conversation; on a HomePod, say Hey Siri, stop listening or turn off Siri requests for that HomePod. If the problem is that Alexa speaks too much rather than keeps listening, enable Brief Mode instead. These controls solve different problems.
Identify what the speaker is actually doing
“Asking too many questions” can describe three separate behaviors. Identifying the behavior prevents you from changing a privacy setting that does not address the annoyance.
It remains ready for another request
After answering, the speaker keeps its listening indicator active and accepts another command without the wake word. This is continued listening. Alexa calls the control Follow-Up Mode; Google Assistant calls it Continued Conversation. Turning that feature off makes you use the wake word for each new request.

The speaker answers correctly but adds a long acknowledgement, explanation, or suggestion. On Alexa, Brief Mode shortens spoken responses and can substitute a short sound for a voice reply. Brief Mode does not disable Follow-Up Mode, so you may need both settings changed.

It activates when nobody addressed it
Background speech can be interpreted as a follow-up request. A conversation, television program, or another person’s command may sound like the next request to the device. In that case, check the device’s listening indicator and review the platform-specific setting before assuming that the speaker is deliberately asking questions.
Turn off Alexa Follow-Up Mode on an Echo
Follow-Up Mode lets you make additional requests without repeating “Alexa.” Amazon notes that Alexa can sometimes mistake speech directed at another person for a follow-up request. You can disable the feature for an individual Echo in the Alexa app or by voice.
Use the Alexa app
- Open the Alexa app.
- Tap Devices.
- Select the Echo device that is bothering you. Choose the specific speaker, not just a room or group, when the app presents individual devices.
- Open Device Settings.
- Tap Follow-Up Mode.
- Turn the setting off.
The setting is attached to the Echo you selected. If several speakers in your home behave this way, check each device rather than assuming one change applies everywhere.

Use a voice command
While addressing the affected Echo, say Turn off Follow-Up Mode. Amazon documents voice control, app control, and device settings as available ways to switch Follow-Up Mode on or off. After the change, wait for the current response to finish and use the wake word before your next request to verify that the follow-up window has ended.
Reduce Alexa’s spoken replies with Brief Mode
If Alexa is not listening after the answer but simply talks more than you want, use Brief Mode in Alexa’s voice-response settings. Amazon describes Brief Mode as making Alexa speak less and, in some cases, playing a short sound instead of a spoken response. It changes response length; it does not end the follow-up listening window. Therefore:

Alexa menu labels can move as the app changes, and available options can vary by device, language, region, and software version. If you do not see Brief Mode, update the app and inspect the voice-response settings for the Echo itself.
Turn off Continued Conversation in Google Home
Google Assistant’s Continued Conversation feature keeps listening for another question after it responds. Google says the listening period is about eight seconds when the feature is enabled. The feature applies to supported Google Home speakers and Smart Displays, with language and device limitations.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFollow the current Google Home path
- Open the Google Home app.
- Tap your profile picture or initial.
- Choose Assistant settings.
- Tap Assistant.
- Open Continued Conversation.
- Turn the setting off.
Once disabled, say the wake phrase again for each new request. If the option is missing, check that you are signed into the Google account that manages the speaker and that the Assistant language and device support the feature. Google’s availability can differ by language and hardware generation, so an absent menu does not necessarily indicate a faulty speaker.
Check more than one speaker
Google describes Continued Conversation as a feature for supported Google Home speakers and Smart Displays rather than a universal behavior on every Assistant product. If only one room continues listening, inspect that device and the account or home configuration controlling it. If all supported devices show the behavior, review the Assistant setting from the account that manages the home.
Stop Siri or Hey Siri listening on HomePod
HomePod provides a direct voice command for stopping Siri activation. Say Hey Siri, stop listening. This turns off Siri or Hey Siri requests on that HomePod until you enable them again.

Use the Home app to control an individual HomePod
- Open the Home app on the device used to manage your HomePod.
- Open the settings for the affected HomePod.
- Use the setting that turns off Siri or Hey Siri requests for that individual HomePod.
- Confirm the change, then test by saying the wake phrase. The HomePod should not respond while Siri requests are disabled.
Apple documents the voice command and a per-HomePod setting. That makes this a stronger privacy stop than merely shortening a reply: the HomePod no longer accepts Siri or Hey Siri requests while listening is disabled.
Re-enable Siri later
Return to the HomePod’s settings in the Home app and turn Siri or Hey Siri requests back on. If you used the voice command, use the Home app setting to restore listening; the exact label can vary with the operating-system version.
Which setting should you change?
| Platform | Primary control | What it changes | How to change it | Typical scope |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Alexa on Echo | Follow-Up Mode | Stops Alexa from accepting another request without repeating the wake word | Alexa app, device settings, or Turn off Follow-Up Mode |
Per selected Echo device |
| Alexa on Echo | Brief Mode | Shortens spoken responses and may replace speech with a brief sound | Alexa voice-response settings | Device setting; exact availability can vary |
| Google Home or Smart Display | Continued Conversation | Stops the approximately eight-second follow-up listening period | Google Home app: profile picture or initial → Assistant settings → Assistant → Continued Conversation | Supported devices and languages; exact account or device scope can vary |
| Apple HomePod | Siri or Hey Siri requests | Stops Siri activation on that HomePod | Hey Siri, stop listening or the Home app’s HomePod settings |

The controls are not interchangeable. Brief Mode changes how much Alexa says; Follow-Up Mode and Continued Conversation change whether the assistant keeps listening; HomePod’s setting disables Siri requests for the selected speaker.
What to do when the speaker is mishearing people
A speaker may appear to ask questions because it interpreted ordinary speech as a command. Amazon specifically warns that Alexa can mistake speech directed at another person for a follow-up request. Similar false activations can occur whenever a device hears words that resemble its wake phrase or a response to the previous command.
Use the listening indicator as your first clue
- Watch the speaker’s listening indicator while people talk normally.
- Note whether the indicator appears immediately after the device finishes an answer or when no command was intended.
- Write down the words spoken immediately before activation. This can reveal a wake-word soundalike or a phrase that the assistant treated as a follow-up.
- Check the platform’s continued-listening setting for that exact device.
The indicator is more useful than the spoken reply alone: it tells you whether the device believes it is listening for a request.

Separate a false activation from a long answer
If the indicator shows listening but the device does not speak until someone responds, continued listening is the likely cause. Disable Follow-Up Mode or Continued Conversation. If the indicator is off and the device merely gives a verbose response, adjust Brief Mode on Alexa or the relevant response preferences available for your platform.
Reduce the chance of accidental requests
- Move the speaker farther from televisions and areas where several people talk over one another.
- Pause briefly after the assistant finishes speaking before continuing a nearby conversation.
- Use the wake word for every request after disabling follow-up listening.
- When privacy is critical, use the platform’s microphone or Siri-listening control rather than relying only on a shorter response.
Privacy implications of each choice
Turning off follow-up listening
With Follow-Up Mode or Continued Conversation off, the assistant should stop waiting for an additional request after completing the current one. You still need to use the wake word for a new command. This addresses the period immediately after an answer without disabling the device’s normal wake-word detection.
Using Brief Mode
Brief Mode is primarily an interaction preference. It makes Alexa less talkative, but it does not mean the microphone or follow-up listener is disabled. Do not use Brief Mode as a privacy substitute.
Stopping Siri listening
HomePod’s Hey Siri, stop listening command and the corresponding Home app setting disable Siri or Hey Siri requests for that HomePod. This is the appropriate choice when you want that speaker not to respond to Siri activation at all.

The speaker still responds without the wake word
Confirm that you changed the setting for the same physical device that responded. Alexa settings are selected per Echo, and a different Echo may have Follow-Up Mode enabled. In a Google home, verify the Assistant account and the particular supported speaker or Smart Display involved. For HomePod, check the individual HomePod’s Siri setting in the Home app.

The app path is different
Menu names and locations can change with software versions, language, region, and device generation. Start from the platform’s device list or Assistant settings, then search for the exact terms Follow-Up Mode, Continued Conversation, or Siri. Update the companion app and the speaker software before concluding that the control is unavailable.
The speaker ignores the voice command
Use the companion app instead. For Alexa, open the selected Echo’s Device Settings and change Follow-Up Mode. For Google, use the Google Home path to Continued Conversation. For HomePod, open the Home app and turn off Siri or Hey Siri requests for the affected speaker. A voice command cannot change a setting if the assistant did not correctly hear the command.
Only some languages or devices offer the feature
Google explicitly limits Continued Conversation by language and device. Alexa and HomePod menus can also vary by software version, region, and hardware generation. Treat the exact labels shown in your app as authoritative for your configuration, and do not assume that a setting available on one speaker must exist on another.

- Alexa accepts a second request without “Alexa”: turn off Follow-Up Mode.
- Alexa gives unnecessary spoken confirmations: enable Brief Mode.
- Google Assistant listens for about eight seconds after answering: turn off Continued Conversation.
- HomePod should not respond to Siri or Hey Siri: say
Hey Siri, stop listeningor disable Siri requests in the Home app. - The device activates during another conversation: watch its listening indicator, identify the device, and review its continued-listening control.
These settings are ecosystem-specific and may be per device. Make the change on the speaker that is actually responding, then test with a new request that requires the wake word.
