On a supported Pixel, stop AI-written notification summaries at Settings > Notifications > Notification summaries, then switch the feature off. If only certain apps should be left out, use Don’t include these apps instead. If you want to silence an app completely, use Settings > Notifications > App notifications and disable that app. A separate Notification organizer controls category-based sorting, so it must be changed independently when “surfacing” means notifications being grouped into sections such as promotions or social content.
Choose the control that matches what you want to stop
Pixel has three related but separate notification controls. Notification summaries create an AI-generated digest from eligible notifications. App notification settings control whether an app can alert you at all. Notification organizer sorts notifications into categories; it does not use the same switch as summaries.

Google documents these as different features in its notification-management help page. Choosing the narrowest control prevents you from silencing an entire app when you only wanted its summaries removed.

- Tap Notifications.
- Tap Notification summaries.
- Switch the notification-summaries feature off.
Google says this setting is off by default, so it may already be disabled on a newly configured phone. If you can see individual app alerts but no summaries, the summary feature is not currently generating them; changing app notification switches is unnecessary unless you also want to remove those individual alerts.
After turning summaries off, ordinary notifications remain governed by each app’s notification permission and channel settings. A messaging app, calendar, or mail app can therefore continue to alert you even though the grouped AI digest no longer appears.
Exclude only selected apps from summaries
If summaries are useful for most apps but inappropriate for a particular conversation, account, or feed, keep the global feature on and exclude only those apps.
- Open Settings.
- Go to Notifications > Notification summaries.
- Tap Don’t include these apps.
- Select each app that should be left out of summaries.
This exclusion changes summary participation, not the app’s ability to send notifications. The selected app can still post its normal alerts unless you separately disable it under App notifications. Conversely, turning an app off under App notifications makes its alerts unavailable to summarize in the first place, but it is a much broader change.
Use the exclusion list when the problem is privacy, relevance, or noise in the digest but you still need immediate alerts from the app. For example, you can leave a work chat out of the digest while continuing to receive its individual messages.
Stop all notifications from one app
When an app itself is the problem, disable its notifications rather than changing summary behavior.
From the notification shade
- When a notification from the app appears, touch and hold it.
- Open the notification controls shown for that app.
- Turn the app’s notifications off, then confirm if Pixel asks.
The exact intermediate label can differ by Android release, but the long-press route takes you to the same app-level controls as Settings.

From Settings
- Open Settings.
- Tap Notifications.
- Tap App notifications.
- Choose the app.
- Switch its notifications off.
Google’s Pixel notification controls guide documents both approaches. This setting is intentionally broader than a summary exclusion: it prevents the app from posting its regular notifications, so use it only when you do not want alerts from that app at all.
Stop Pixel from organizing or surfacing notifications into categories
Some users use “surfacing” to describe notifications being sorted into sections such as Promotions and news or Social and suggested content. That behavior belongs to Notification organizer, not Notification summaries.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Notifications.
- Tap Notification organizer.
- Turn the organizer off.
Google states that Promotions and news is enabled by default. Social and suggested content can be enabled in the organizer’s settings. Turning the organizer off removes this categorization feature; it does not turn off AI summaries, and it does not revoke an app’s notification permission. If both behaviors are unwanted, disable each feature in its own menu.
When the organizer menu is missing, check the eligibility requirements below. Availability is limited by Pixel model, primary language, and, for the organizer, region.
Check whether your Pixel supports these features
Google’s current help documentation limits AI notification summaries and Notification organizer to Pixel 9 and later, excluding A-series models. Summaries support English and Japanese, and one of those languages must be the phone’s primary system language for the summary settings to be available.
Notification organizer has additional requirements. The phone must use English as its primary system language and be in one of these supported regions:
- Australia
- Canada
- Germany
- Japan
- United Kingdom
- United States
These are feature-availability requirements, not recommendations to change your language or region. A Pixel outside the supported model, language, or region may simply omit the relevant menu. Google can also change labels or placement through Android and Pixel updates. If the path in this article does not appear, open Settings and search for Notification summaries or Notification organizer.

Troubleshoot summaries that will not turn off or behave unexpectedly
If the switch is present but summaries continue, or the menu is unavailable despite an apparently eligible device, work through the following checks.

Confirm Android System Intelligence has notification access
- Open Settings.
- Tap Notifications.
- Tap Privacy.
- Open Notification read, reply and control.
- Check whether Android System Intelligence is allowed.
Google identifies Android System Intelligence as the system component to check for summary-related behavior. If it is not allowed, the summary feature may be unavailable or may not operate as expected. Change only this permission when troubleshooting; it is separate from the per-app notification switches.
Review the summary exclusion list
Return to Settings > Notifications > Notification summaries and open Don’t include these apps. An app placed on this list will not contribute to summaries, even if its normal notifications remain enabled. Remove it from the exclusion list only if you want its notifications considered again.
Check the app’s notification permission
Open Settings > Notifications > App notifications, select the relevant app, and verify that its notifications are enabled. A disabled app cannot provide ordinary alerts for a summary to process. If your goal is only to remove that app from summaries, leave its app notification permission on and use the exclusion list instead.
Search Settings when labels differ
Pixel menu names can change with operating-system updates, and availability can vary by model, language, and region. Use the Settings search field for “Notification summaries” or “Notification organizer” rather than assuming a missing menu means the feature is broken. Confirm the phone’s model and primary language against Google’s eligibility requirements before changing unrelated settings.

Notification history is a separate recovery tool, not a summary or organizer setting. To enable it, open Settings > Notifications > Notification history and turn it on. Google says that, while enabled, Pixel keeps dismissed notifications from the previous 24 hours.
History does not restore a notification that was never allowed, does not re-enable an app you turned off, and does not undo summary exclusions. It only gives you a way to inspect recent dismissed alerts after history has been enabled.

Use this decision path before changing settings
- Do you object to the AI-written digest itself? Turn off Notification summaries globally.
- Do you want normal alerts from most apps but not summaries from a few? Keep summaries on and use Don’t include these apps.
- Do you want no alerts from one app? Disable that app under App notifications or long-press one of its notifications and turn notifications off.
- Are notifications being grouped into promotional or social categories rather than summarized? Open Notification organizer and disable categorization there.
- Did you dismiss something accidentally? Use Notification history, provided it was enabled before the dismissal.
This sequence keeps each change limited to the behavior you actually want to stop. Summary controls affect generated digests, app controls affect delivery, organizer controls affect categorization, and history controls only what you can review after dismissal.

Privacy and practical trade-offs
Choosing between these controls is mainly a question of scope. A global summary switch changes how the phone presents eligible notifications from every app. The per-app exclusion list is narrower and is useful when a notification contains sensitive conversations or account details that you do not want condensed into a digest. It does not hide the original alert, so anyone who can see your lock screen may still see that app’s notification according to your existing lock-screen settings.

Disabling an app under App notifications is the strongest noise reduction, but it also removes reminders, messages, and other alerts from that app. Before using it, consider whether the app has separate notification channels or whether excluding it from summaries is enough. The organizer switch is narrower in a different direction: it changes placement into categories, not whether an app can notify you.
These settings can be combined. For example, you can leave summaries enabled, exclude a private messaging app, turn off a shopping app entirely, and disable Notification organizer if you prefer one unsorted notification list. Each action remains reversible from the same menu.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Disabling an app when you only dislike its summary: this removes ordinary alerts too. Use the app-exclusion list instead.
- Changing summaries when the issue is category sorting: check Notification organizer for Promotions and news or Social and suggested content.
- Assuming a missing menu is a software fault: verify Pixel model, A-series status, primary language, and organizer region eligibility.
- Expecting Notification history to recover old alerts immediately: Google’s 24-hour history applies while the feature is enabled; it is not a retroactive archive.
- Looking for one master switch for every behavior: summaries, app alerts, organizer categories, and history are independent controls.
- Changing the phone’s region or language just to reveal a menu: Google lists those as eligibility conditions, not as a general troubleshooting recommendation.
- Forgetting Android System Intelligence: summary behavior can depend on its notification-read permission, which is separate from an app’s own notification permission.
After an Android or Pixel update
An update can move a menu or change its wording without changing the underlying scope of the control. Use Settings search for the exact terms Notification summaries, Notification organizer, or Notification history. Recheck whether the primary language, region, and device model still meet Google’s listed requirements. Do not infer that a missing organizer menu means summaries are enabled, or that a visible summaries menu means organizer categorization is available; the two features have different eligibility rules.
