Stop the appliance first. If an AF100 Series air fryer emits black smoke, Ninja’s safety instruction is: “Should the unit emit black smoke, unplug immediately and wait for smoking to stop before removing the cooking basket.” Do not reach into a smoking fryer. Once the unit is cool, clean it only as your model’s guide allows. Oil, tray placement and smoke instructions differ between Ninja product families, so identify the model before applying any advice. Persistent smoke, a damaged appliance or a continuing abnormal odor is a reason to stop using the fryer and contact Ninja Customer Service.

What to do immediately when a Ninja air fryer smokes

  1. Stop the cooking cycle. If the controls respond safely, cancel the program. Do not open the drawer or door while smoke is actively escaping unless your model’s instructions specifically tell you to do so.
  2. Unplug the appliance when you can do so safely. For the AF100 Series, Ninja states: “Should the unit emit black smoke, unplug immediately and wait for smoking to stop before removing the cooking basket.” This black-smoke instruction is specific to the AF100 guide; do not treat smoke color as a universal diagnostic for every Ninja model.
  3. Wait for the smoke to stop and the appliance to cool. The AF100 guide says to allow approximately 30 minutes of cooling before handling, cleaning or storing the unit.
  4. Keep the appliance out of use if anything is damaged. Do not continue cooking to see whether the smell clears if the housing, cord, plug, basket, crisper plate, tray or controls appear damaged.

Do not pour water into the fryer, spray cleaner into the heating area, scrape the heating element or improvise a burn-off cycle. Those actions are not supported by the AF100 basket-fryer instructions and can create additional damage or a safety hazard. Never try to smother an active appliance fire with water. If smoke is heavy, flames appear or you cannot safely reach the plug, move away and use the appropriate emergency response for your location.

Why a Ninja air fryer may smell burnt or produce smoke

There is no single odor test that identifies a failed Ninja component. In practice, smoke can be associated with food or grease residue, an oil choice or amount that does not suit the appliance, or an incorrect tray arrangement on an oven-style model. A damaged part or malfunction is also possible. The official guides do not establish a cross-model catalog that lets you identify plastic, electrical or mechanical faults by smell alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That limitation matters: a short-lived cooking odor after greasy food is not proof that a unit is safe, and a persistent odor is not proof of a particular failure. Treat the appliance’s condition and behavior as the deciding factors. If smoke returns after the permitted cleaning process, or if the smell continues without an identifiable food or oil explanation, leave the unit unplugged and seek model-specific support.

Identify the Ninja model before troubleshooting

Ninja uses different directions for basket fryers, grill/air-fryer combinations and oven-style units. Find the model number on the rating label, packaging, owner’s guide or the product’s control-panel documentation. The instructions below are not interchangeable.

Product family covered by the official guide Relevant smoke or odor instruction What not to generalize
AF100 Series Air Fryer For black smoke, unplug immediately and wait until smoking stops before removing the basket. The guide calls for about 30 minutes of cooling before cleaning or handling. Do not apply the black-smoke wording as a diagnosis for every Ninja appliance.
Ninja Foodi Grill & Air Fryer The guide warns that oil heated past its smoke point can give food a “burnt, acrid flavour” and lists lower-smoke oil choices for that product family. Do not assume those oil recommendations or quantities are universal across all Ninja air fryers.
DT200 XL Pro Air Oven For greasy foods or Air Fry, Air Roast and Whole Roast functions, use the roast tray on the sheet pan. If smoke continues, the guide specifies a Toast cycle at shade 7 with accessories removed. Do not run this oven-specific Toast procedure in a basket-style air fryer.

If you cannot find the model number, do not guess which cleaning or smoke procedure applies. Contact Ninja with a photo of the rating label or the documentation you have. A similar-looking drawer or tray does not mean two models share the same safe procedure.

Clean an AF100 safely after it smokes

The following sequence follows the AF100 Series guide. If your model is different, use its owner’s guide instead of assuming the same parts, coatings or cleaning method. Cleaning is appropriate only after the smoke has stopped and the appliance is unplugged and cool.

1. Unplug and allow the unit to cool

Remove the plug and wait approximately 30 minutes, as the AF100 guide directs. A hot basket, crisper plate or heating area can burn you even after visible smoke has stopped. Keep the appliance on a stable surface while it cools, and do not leave it running unattended to “burn off” residue.

2. Remove the basket and crisper plate

Take out the removable cooking parts only after cooling. Inspect them for baked-on grease, charred food, melted packaging or a damaged non-stick surface. Look for foil, paper, labels or other material that could have contacted the heater. Do not use a damaged part until Ninja confirms the correct replacement for your model.

3. Soak stuck-on residue as the guide permits

The AF100 instructions say that stuck-on residue can be soaked in warm, soapy water. Clean the basket and crisper plate according to the guide, rinse as directed and dry the parts completely before reinstalling them. Soaking gives softened residue time to release without aggressive scraping. Do not substitute abrasive powders, aggressive solvents or oven cleaner.

4. Check the heating-element area without touching or scraping it

The AF100 guide specifically names a cleaning brush for food residue on the heating element. Use only the type of cleaning method your manual permits, with the appliance unplugged and cool. A soft air-fryer cleaning brush is a reasonable search term, but no particular brush should be assumed to fit every Ninja model. Do not scrape the element with metal tools, bend it or attempt to remove components.

5. Keep the main unit dry

Do not immerse the main unit. Do not place the main unit in a dishwasher. The AF100 guide also cautions against abrasive cleaners, steel wool and scouring pads. Wipe only the surfaces and areas that the model’s cleaning instructions identify. Keep liquid away from the electrical and heating areas, and make sure removable parts are dry before use.

6. Reassemble only after inspection

When the parts are clean and dry, confirm that the basket and crisper plate sit correctly and that no food, foil or packaging is touching the heating area. Check that the basket is not warped and that the coating is not flaking. If you still see residue, damage or an unexplained odor, leave the fryer unplugged and contact Ninja rather than running another cycle as a test.

When oil is the source of smoke or a burnt taste

Oil advice is model-specific. In the Ninja Foodi Grill & Air Fryer guide, Ninja explains that heating oil beyond its smoke point can impart food with a “burnt, acrid flavour.” For that product family, the guide recommends canola, refined coconut, avocado, vegetable or rapeseed oil to produce less smoke than oils that reach their smoke point sooner.

That guidance does not establish a universal oil rule for every Ninja air fryer. Check the guide for your exact model before changing the oil, adding oil or deciding how much to use. Even a recommended oil can smoke if too much is applied, if it contacts a hot surface or if food residue has accumulated around the heater.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Do not pour oil into a hot appliance while it is smoking.
  • Do not assume a different oil will solve smoke caused by charred food, a damaged part or another unidentified problem.
  • Do not copy oil quantities from a Foodi Grill recipe into an AF100 or another model.
  • After the appliance cools, clean residue using the approved method for the model before trying another recipe.
  • If smoke returns with a small, model-approved amount of oil and clean parts, stop using the appliance and contact support.

Special instructions for the DT200 XL Pro Air Oven

The DT200 is an oven-style unit, so its smoke procedure differs from a drawer-style basket fryer. For greasy foods and for the Air Fry, Air Roast and Whole Roast functions, Ninja’s guide says to use the roast tray on the sheet pan. The tray helps manage drips and is part of that model’s specified setup. Confirm that both pieces are positioned as shown in the DT200 guide before cooking.

If smoke persists on a DT200, its guide says to remove the accessories and run a Toast cycle at shade 7. This is a model-specific instruction. Do not transfer it to an AF100 or another basket-style Ninja air fryer, and do not invent a comparable cycle when your model’s guide does not provide one. If the Toast procedure does not resolve the issue, or if smoke appears with no food loaded, unplug the oven and contact Ninja.

A practical decision guide after the appliance cools

  1. Was the smoke black on an AF100? Follow the AF100 stop instruction first: unplug, wait until smoking stops, then allow the unit to cool before removing the basket.
  2. Is the unit an oven-style DT200? Check the roast-tray-on-sheet-pan arrangement for greasy food and the model’s specified Toast-at-shade-7 procedure only when smoke persists.
  3. Is the unit a Foodi Grill & Air Fryer? Review the oil guidance for that family and inspect for residue after cooling.
  4. Is there residue, melted material or a damaged cooking part? Clean only the approved areas and keep the appliance out of service if a part is damaged.
  5. Does smoke or an unexplained odor return? Stop testing it. Repeated cycles can expose you to more smoke and do not establish the cause.

How to interpret a continuing burnt smell

A smell alone does not identify the failed component. The Ninja instructions do not establish a cross-model odor taxonomy that can distinguish normal cooking odors from plastic, electrical or mechanical faults by scent alone. Use the appliance’s behavior and condition to decide whether it is safe to stop and seek service.

What you observe Safe response
Black smoke from an AF100 Unplug immediately, wait for smoking to stop, then wait for the unit to cool before removing the basket, as the AF100 guide states.
Smoke after greasy food in a DT200 Once safe to handle, verify that the roast tray is on the sheet pan as specified. If smoke persists, use only the DT200 guide’s Toast-at-shade-7 procedure with accessories removed.
Burnt taste or acrid odor on a Foodi Grill & Air Fryer After cooling, check the oil guidance for that family and remove residue using the model’s approved cleaning method.
Smoke returns after cleaning Stop using the appliance. Do not keep running cycles to diagnose it at home; contact Ninja Customer Service.
Cracked housing, damaged cord or plug, warped basket, exposed wiring or controls that malfunction Stop using the unit and arrange support. Do not operate it with a damaged component.
Persistent plastic or electrical smell with no established food or oil cause Unplug it and seek model-specific advice. The guides do not confirm that a persistent odor is normal.

When to contact Ninja Customer Service

The AF100 guide says to stop using a malfunctioning or damaged unit and call Customer Service. Apply that threshold rather than trying to repair the appliance yourself when any of these conditions remains after cooling and permitted cleaning:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Smoke appears again during a later cycle.
  • The odor persists even when the basket, crisper plate and approved cleaning areas are free of residue.
  • The housing, power cord, plug, controls or cooking parts show damage.
  • The fan, heater or controls behave abnormally, or the appliance stops responding as expected.
  • You cannot identify the model-specific cleaning or smoke procedure.
  • Smoke appears when the appliance is empty or when no oil or greasy food is present.

When you contact support, have the exact model number, a description of when the smoke appeared, the function and temperature or shade setting, what food and oil were used, and whether the unit was cleaned according to its guide. A photo of the rating label and damaged area can help identify the correct product. Do not continue operating it just to collect more symptoms.

Replacing a missing or damaged part

If inspection finds a missing or damaged basket, crisper plate, tray or other component, use Ninja’s official Accessories channel or Customer Service for the exact model. The AF100 guide directs owners to those channels for additional parts and accessories. Check compatibility by model number; a replacement basket or brush is not a general remedy for smoke and should not be assumed to fit another Ninja appliance. Do not use a makeshift tray, generic insert or altered part while waiting for confirmation.

Prevent smoke on the next cook

  • Clean food and grease residue after the appliance has cooled, using the products and tools authorized in your model’s guide.
  • Keep removable parts dry before reinstalling them.
  • Use the tray arrangement specified for your appliance, especially in oven-style units handling greasy food.
  • Follow your model’s oil guidance rather than copying recommendations from another Ninja family.
  • Inspect the cord, plug, housing and cooking parts before use.
  • Do not operate with foil, packaging or loose food touching the heating area.
  • Keep the appliance where its required ventilation and clearance are maintained according to the owner’s guide.
  • Stop immediately if smoke returns; repeated cycles are not a safe troubleshooting method.

Frequently asked questions

Should I remove the basket while my Ninja air fryer is smoking?

Not while smoke is actively escaping. For the AF100, unplug immediately and wait for smoking to stop before removing the cooking basket. Then allow the unit to cool for approximately 30 minutes before handling or cleaning. Other models may have different instructions, so use their guide.

Is black smoke always an electrical fire?

No conclusion can be made from color alone across Ninja models. The AF100 guide specifically treats black smoke as a reason to unplug immediately and wait for the smoke to stop. It does not create a universal diagnosis for every Ninja appliance. If smoke persists or the unit is damaged, stop using it and seek support.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I pour water into the basket to stop the smoke?

No. Do not pour water into the fryer or spray liquid into the heating area. Unplug the appliance when safe, wait for the smoke to stop and follow the model’s cooling and cleaning instructions.

Can I run my Ninja empty to burn off the smell?

Do not invent a burn-off cycle. The supported procedures differ by model. The DT200 guide specifies a Toast cycle at shade 7 with accessories removed for persistent smoke, while that procedure must not be transferred to basket-style units. For an AF100 or another model, follow its guide and contact Ninja if the odor persists.

What cleaner should I use on an AF100?

The AF100 guide permits warm, soapy water for soaking stuck-on residue and warns against abrasive cleaners, steel wool and scouring pads. It also says to keep the main unit out of water and names a cleaning brush for food residue on the heating element. Follow the guide rather than choosing a stronger chemical.

Can I put the Ninja air fryer in the dishwasher?

Do not place the AF100 main unit in a dishwasher. The guide distinguishes the main unit from removable parts and requires its approved cleaning method. For another model, check that model’s manual before putting any component in a dishwasher.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which oil causes the least smoke?

For the Ninja Foodi Grill & Air Fryer family, the guide lists canola, refined coconut, avocado, vegetable and rapeseed oils as choices intended to produce less smoke than oils that reach their smoke point sooner. That list is not a universal rule for every Ninja air fryer. Check the exact model’s guide and use the specified quantity.

Why does my DT200 smoke when cooking greasy food?

Ninja’s DT200 guidance says to use the roast tray on the sheet pan for greasy foods and for Air Fry, Air Roast and Whole Roast functions. If smoke continues, the guide specifies a Toast cycle at shade 7 with accessories removed. Do not use those instructions on a different model.

Should I replace the basket if it is warped?

Stop using the appliance and check Ninja Accessories or Customer Service for a part compatible with the exact model. A replacement basket may be appropriate when inspection finds damage, but it is not a general fix for smoke and should not be assumed to fit another Ninja appliance.

How long should a burnt smell last?

The official guides do not establish a universal time limit or confirm that a persistent plastic or electrical odor is normal. After cooling and the permitted cleaning process, if the smell remains or smoke returns, leave the appliance unplugged and contact Ninja Customer Service.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I do first if my Ninja air fryer starts smoking?

Stop the cycle, unplug it when safe, wait for smoke to stop and let it cool. On the AF100, Ninja specifically says to wait for smoking to stop before removing the basket.

Can I use water or oven cleaner to remove burnt residue?

No. Do not pour water into the fryer or use unapproved chemicals. For the AF100, use warm soapy water for permitted soaking and avoid abrasive cleaners, steel wool and scouring pads.

What oil should I use to reduce smoke?

The Foodi Grill & Air Fryer guide lists canola, refined coconut, avocado, vegetable and rapeseed oils for that family. Oil guidance is model-specific, so check your exact manual.
