If your closed Galaxy Z Fold lights up in a pocket or bag, first disable the two wake gestures that Samsung identifies as common triggers. Open Settings > Advanced features > Motions and gestures, then turn off Lift to wake and Double tap to turn on screen (the latter may be called Double tap to wake on some software versions). Next, open Settings > Display and enable Accidental touch protection. If the screen remains overly sensitive, turn off Touch sensitivity in the same Display menu. These changes reduce accidental wake-ups and touches, but Samsung does not promise that they will prevent every brief illumination.
Start with the two wake gestures
Samsung says features intended to make a phone easier to wake can also make its screen turn on unexpectedly. On a closed Fold, movement in a pocket, a bag or your hand can resemble an intentional wake action.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Advanced features, then Motions and gestures.
- Switch off Lift to wake. This prevents the display from activating when the phone is picked up or moved in a way the sensor interprets as a lift.
- Switch off Double tap to turn on screen. Depending on the Fold model and One UI version, the same control may be labeled Double tap to wake. With it disabled, two taps on the outer display should no longer wake the phone.
Close the phone, place it where the problem normally occurs and test it after changing both settings. If you want to identify the exact trigger, turn off one setting, test, and then turn off the other. Changing one option at a time makes the result easier to interpret. Keep the test conditions consistent: use the same case or no case, the same pocket or bag compartment and, if relevant, the same charger. A consistent comparison is more useful than repeatedly changing several controls and trying to remember which one helped.
These gestures are convenience features, so disabling them does not stop you from waking the Fold with the Side button or another normal method. It simply removes movement and two-tap input as likely causes. If the display still flashes for a moment, continue with the checks below rather than assuming the first settings failed.

Protect the closed display from accidental touches
After disabling the wake gestures, open Settings > Display and turn on Accidental touch protection. Samsung describes this feature as keeping the screen inactive against accidental touches when the phone is in a dark place such as a pocket or bag. It is a guard against unintended contact, not a guarantee that the screen can never light for another reason.
If the outer screen still reacts to light contact, return to Settings > Display and turn off Touch sensitivity. That option is useful when a screen protector or gloves make deliberate taps difficult, but increased sensitivity can also make incidental contact easier to register. Test after changing it; if you rely on a thick protector, you may prefer to leave Touch sensitivity on and address the physical source of the contact instead.
Think of these two Display controls as separate protections. Accidental touch protection is designed for a carried phone in a dark place, while Touch sensitivity changes how readily the panel responds to contact. Neither setting diagnoses a notification, Bixby voice wake, Side-button pressure or charging behavior. If turning them off and on does not change the symptom, move to those possible causes.

Menu names and availability vary by model and software version. If a label is not present, use the closest wording shown in your Fold’s Settings search, and check Samsung’s instructions for that model and One UI release rather than assuming another generation has identical menus. The gesture guide itself notes that features can vary by device, so a missing switch is not evidence that the phone is malfunctioning.
Know which screen Samsung means
Owners often call the outer display the “cover screen.” Samsung’s foldable guide uses that name for earlier Fold models through the Galaxy Z Fold5. Starting with the Galaxy Z Fold6 and later generations, Samsung calls the outer display the Flex Window. It is the same practical screen for this troubleshooting purpose: the display you use while the phone is closed for notifications and other functions.
The title and steps use “cover screen” because that is the phrase many owners search for. A Z Fold6 or newer owner should look for the corresponding Flex Window behavior even when a support page uses the newer term. The exact feature set and menu placement can differ between generations. When you contact support, give the full model name instead of only saying “Fold”; that prevents instructions for a different generation from being applied to your phone.

If the screen still wakes, check physical button pressure
Remove the case for a controlled test
A case or cover can press the Side/Power button as the Fold shifts in a pocket or bag. Inspect whether the button feels depressed, unusually stiff or continuously activated. Temporarily remove any third-party case, close the phone and repeat the same carrying test. If the unexpected wake stops without the case, refit it carefully or replace it with a case that leaves the button clear.
This test separates a physical pressure problem from a software wake event. A case that does not press the button can still allow contact with the outer display, so keep Accidental touch protection enabled while you test. Also check the cover’s edges and hinge area for debris or a warped section that could push inward when the phone is folded. Do not force the hinge or pry around the button; the useful result is whether the symptom changes when the case is removed.
Check for a button that is being pressed during normal handling
Even without a case, a tight pocket, a bag compartment or an object next to the Fold can press the Side button. Carry the closed phone in an empty compartment for a short comparison. Do not repeatedly force or pry the button; if it remains sticky or activates with little travel, record the behavior and ask Samsung for model-specific service guidance.
Note whether the wake happens when the phone is squeezed, placed face-in or face-out, or moved beside keys and other objects. Those observations do not prove a hardware fault, but they help support reproduce the physical condition without guessing.
Review Bixby voice wake
Voice wake can be another explanation when the screen comes on without an obvious touch. Samsung’s troubleshooting guidance allows you to adjust voice-wake sensitivity or disable voice wake. Review the Bixby settings on your phone and temporarily turn voice wake off. Then repeat the same pocket or bag test.
If disabling voice wake changes the behavior, you have identified an audio-triggered path rather than a display sensitivity problem. You can leave it disabled or reduce its sensitivity if you need voice access; the available controls vary by model and software version. Test in a quiet room and during ordinary conversation, but do not treat one silent test as conclusive if the original symptom occurred only around particular sounds.
Check notifications that are allowed to turn on the screen
Some applications wake the display to show a notification. This can look like a motion or touch problem, especially when alerts arrive while the Fold is closed. Review Settings > Notifications > App notifications, then inspect the notification options for apps that alert frequently. Also check each app’s own notification settings, because an app may provide controls that are separate from Samsung’s system list.

For a clean test, temporarily limit notifications for one likely app at a time and observe whether the screen remains dark when a new alert arrives. Do not disable every notification at once if you need calls, messages or security alerts; narrowing the test preserves useful alerts and identifies the source more reliably. Record the app name and notification type if the wake coincides with an alert. That information is more actionable than simply reporting that the screen “randomly” turned on.
Use Safe mode to identify a third-party app
Samsung says some third-party apps can cause a phone to wake while it is charging or sleeping. Safe mode starts the phone with third-party apps disabled, allowing you to compare behavior without uninstalling anything.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Enter Safe mode using the Safe mode procedure shown for your exact Galaxy Z Fold model and software version.
- Close the Fold and reproduce the conditions that normally cause the screen to wake, including charging if that is part of the pattern.
- If the wake-ups stop in Safe mode, consider apps installed or updated around the time the issue began. Remove or disable recent candidates one at a time, returning to normal mode between tests.
- If the behavior continues in Safe mode, third-party apps are less likely to be the cause; continue with the button, notification and charger checks.
Safe mode is a diagnostic comparison, not a permanent operating mode. The exact entry and exit steps are device-specific, so use Samsung’s current instructions for your Fold generation instead of applying a button sequence from another Galaxy model. Because Safe mode changes the software environment, compare it with the same closed position and charging setup used in normal mode.
Test the charger and charging setup
If the screen lights mainly while the Fold is charging, examine the charger before changing more settings. Samsung notes that some third-party wireless fast chargers may cause unexpected wake-ups and recommends Samsung-approved chargers for optimal performance. That statement does not mean every third-party charger causes the problem.
Disconnect the wireless charger and observe the phone while it is idle on a stable surface. Then compare with a Samsung-approved charger, following the charger’s placement and alignment instructions. If the behavior appears only with one wireless charger, stop using that charger for the test and retain the model and software details when contacting support. A charger that causes wake-ups should not be treated as proof that the Fold’s display or battery is defective.
Include wired charging in your comparison if that is how you normally charge, but change only one part of the setup at a time. For example, compare idle behavior with no charger, then with the usual wireless charger, then with the approved alternative. This shows whether charging itself, a particular wireless accessory or the phone’s placement is associated with the illumination.

Use a diagnostic order instead of changing everything at once
The sequence below keeps each test meaningful. After every change, close the phone and reproduce the same conditions for a comparable period. A short note with the time, position, charger, case and any incoming alert can reveal a pattern that is easy to miss during casual testing.
| Observed pattern | First test | Likely area to investigate next |
|---|---|---|
| It wakes when you pick up or move the Fold. | Disable Lift to wake. | Case or Side-button pressure, then motion-related contact. |
| It wakes after contact with the outer display. | Disable Double tap to wake and enable Accidental touch protection. | Touch sensitivity and case or pocket pressure. |
| It wakes when an alert arrives. | Review App notifications and the app’s own settings. | The specific app or notification category. |
| It wakes when you speak or when there is nearby speech. | Adjust or disable Bixby voice wake. | Voice-wake sensitivity and related Bixby controls. |
| It wakes only while charging. | Test without the wireless charger, then with a Samsung-approved charger. | Charger compatibility, placement or charging accessories. |
| It stops in Safe mode. | Review recently installed or updated apps. | A third-party app running during sleep or charging. |
| It occurs in every test, including Safe mode and without a case. | Document the exact model, One UI/software version and conditions. | Samsung support or service for model-specific diagnosis. |
This table is a decision aid, not a list of guaranteed causes. More than one trigger can coexist—for example, a notification can arrive while a case is pressing the Side button—so keep the settings changes that solve a problem and continue testing only the remaining symptom. If the screen merely illuminates briefly but no setting or app interaction follows, describe that distinction to support; Samsung’s general guidance does not assign one universal cause to every persistent Fold case.
Optional physical protection for carrying the Fold
Samsung’s general Galaxy guidance suggests that a flip or wallet-style case can help block accidental touches while a phone is carried. For a Fold, that means a folio-style case with cover-screen coverage may reduce contact with the Flex Window or cover screen in a pocket or bag.
Choose only a case explicitly compatible with your exact Z Fold generation. Outer-screen dimensions, hinge clearance, button cutouts and magnet placement can differ between generations. Verify that the cover closes without pressing the Side button and that it does not interfere with charging or wireless accessories. A case can reduce accidental contact, but it cannot identify or correct an app, notification, voice-wake, button or charger cause; complete the settings and diagnostic checks first.
This is an optional purchase, not a replacement for troubleshooting. Search terms such as “Galaxy Z Fold folio case with cover” describe an accessory category, not a guarantee of fit or performance. Confirm the model number and return policy before buying, and avoid assuming that a case listed for one Fold generation will fit another.

Before contacting support, note:
- The precise Galaxy Z Fold generation and whether Samsung calls its outer display the Cover screen or Flex Window.
- The installed software or One UI version.
- Whether the phone was closed, charging, in a case or inside a pocket or bag when it woke.
- Which settings you changed and whether the behavior stopped in Safe mode.
- Whether the issue occurs with a particular notification, voice command, wireless charger or physical position.
These details let support distinguish a wake gesture from a button, app, notification, charger or hardware-related symptom and avoid repeating tests you have already completed. If a case, charger or app clearly changes the behavior, mention its exact model or name rather than describing it only as “third party.”
A concise prevention checklist
- Turn off Lift to wake.

- Turn on Accidental touch protection.
- Turn off Touch sensitivity if the display is still reacting to incidental contact.
- Carry the closed Fold without anything pressing the Side button.
- Test without a third-party case if the symptom began after fitting one.
- Adjust or disable Bixby voice wake when voice-triggered activation is suspected.
- Review notification permissions for apps that wake the display.
- Use Safe mode to test whether a recently installed or updated app is involved.
- Compare charging behavior with no wireless charger and with a Samsung-approved charger.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my closed Galaxy Z Fold wake in my pocket?
Samsung identifies wake gestures, accidental touches, button pressure, notifications, Bixby voice wake, third-party apps and some wireless chargers as possible paths. Start by turning off Lift to wake and Double tap to turn on screen, then enable Accidental touch protection.
What is the difference between Cover screen and Flex Window?
Samsung calls the outer display the Cover screen on Fold models through Z Fold5. Starting with Z Fold6, it uses Flex Window. The troubleshooting steps concern the same outer display while the phone is closed.
Will Accidental touch protection stop every screen flash?
No. It helps keep the display inactive against accidental touches in a pocket or bag, but it does not prevent every notification, button, voice, app or charging-related wake.
Should I turn off Touch sensitivity?
Try turning it off if the outer display reacts to light contact. Increased sensitivity can help with gloves or a thick protector, so leave it on if you need that benefit and investigate physical contact instead.
How can I tell whether a case is causing the wake-up?
Remove the third-party case, close the Fold and repeat the same carrying test. If the symptom stops, inspect whether the case presses the Side button or allows contact with the outer display, and replace it with an exact-generation case if necessary.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat should I do if the Fold wakes only on a wireless charger?
Test the phone without the charger and then with a Samsung-approved charger. Samsung notes that some third-party wireless fast chargers may cause unexpected wake-ups; this does not mean every third-party charger is responsible.
When should I use Safe mode?
Use Safe mode when the wake-up continues after the basic settings checks, especially if it occurs while charging or sleeping. If the behavior stops there, review apps installed or updated around the time the issue began.
The Bottom Line
Turn off Lift to wake and Double tap to turn on screen first, then enable Accidental touch protection. If the closed Fold still lights up, test without the case, review Touch sensitivity, Bixby and notifications, compare Safe mode and charger behavior, and give Samsung your exact model and software version if the symptom persists.
