The reliable way to reduce bypasses is to layer Apple’s controls: manage the child’s own Apple Account through Family Sharing, protect Screen Time with a private passcode, block app installation and deletion, filter websites separately, and use schedules plus Content & Privacy Restrictions. Check that every family device is updated and that the child is not using a different account or an unrestricted browser. These measures close the common routes around limits, but Apple does not promise that Screen Time can prevent every workaround, software defect, or exploit.

Why a single Screen Time limit is easy to work around

Screen Time limits apply to the activities and accounts they are configured to control. A child may still reach the same content through a browser, reinstall an app, use a second Apple Account, or change a setting if the Screen Time code is known. Treat parental controls as a set of overlapping controls rather than one switch.

  • Account control: the child should use a separate Apple Account in your Family Sharing group.
  • Settings control: a Screen Time passcode should be different from the device-unlock code and known only to the parent or guardian.
  • App control: installation, deletion, age ratings, allowed apps, and purchase approvals address different download routes.
  • Web control: browser filtering is configured separately from app limits.
  • Time control: Downtime, App Limits, and approved extra-time requests define when use is allowed.

Configure the layers in that order. If one setting appears not to work, troubleshoot the account, software version, and alternate access path before assuming the limit itself is broken.

1. Put the child’s iPhone under the correct Apple Account

Start with identity. The child should have their own Apple Account in the family group, not the parent’s shared account. A shared adult account makes it difficult to tell whose Screen Time data and permissions are being applied and can expose the parent’s purchases or account changes.

Set up or verify Family Sharing

  1. On the parent or guardian’s iPhone, open Settings and select the Apple Account name at the top.
  2. Open Family and follow the prompts to create or manage the family group.
  3. Add the child’s existing Apple Account, or create a child account when Apple presents that option.
  4. On the child’s iPhone, confirm that the signed-in account is the one shown in the family group. Do not rely on an old account left over from a previous setup.

Apple allows a family organizer or a parent/guardian to manage a child’s parental controls from their own Apple device. Before depending on synchronized settings, update the Apple devices used by the family. Apple says the family’s devices should be updated so Screen Time settings sync as intended. If a device cannot run the current software, the previous Screen Time version can still be used, but its features and labels may differ.

Check the account whenever behavior looks inconsistent

Verify the Apple Account on the child’s iPhone and in the parent’s Family settings. An account switch can make a carefully configured limit appear to disappear. Also check whether another family device is signed in with an older account or software version; synchronization problems can otherwise look like a bypass.

2. Lock Screen Time with a separate, private passcode

Apple describes the Screen Time passcode as a lock on a child’s Screen Time settings so the child cannot change them on their own. It is separate from the iPhone unlock code. Using the same four digits for both codes makes the control easier to defeat if the child knows the device code.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Set the passcode from the parent’s device

  1. Open Settings on the parent’s iPhone.
  2. Tap Screen Time, then Family, and select the child.
  3. Choose Manage Screen Time, then Lock Screen Time Settings.
  4. Enter a four-digit Screen Time passcode when prompted.
  5. Associate the passcode with the parent’s Apple Account for recovery, if Apple offers that option.

Choose digits that are not a birthday, phone number, repeating pattern, or the child’s device-unlock code. Enter the code when the child cannot watch. Keep the recovery Apple Account credentials private; anyone who can use that account may be able to reset the Screen Time passcode.

Check whether the code has been exposed

Apple provides a last-used date and time for the Screen Time passcode. If the child may have observed or guessed it, change the code rather than merely reminding the child not to use it. Review that indicator after an unexpected settings change. A passcode protects the settings interface, but it cannot remove access that you have deliberately left allowed elsewhere, such as an unrestricted browser.

3. Close app installation, deletion, and reinstall routes

App limits do not stop a child from obtaining a different app unless installation and purchase controls are also configured. Deleting an app and installing it again can reset the practical effect of a limit, and a download request may provide another route to an app you intended to block.

Restrict App Store changes

  1. From the child’s Screen Time settings in the family view, open the controls for App Store purchases and downloads. Depending on the software version, these may appear under Content & Privacy Restrictions and iTunes & App Store Purchases.
  2. Set Installing Apps to Don’t Allow when you want every new installation to require a parent decision.
  3. Set Deleting Apps to Don’t Allow if removing and reinstalling an app is a concern.
  4. Review in-app purchases and other purchase permissions, then save the changes behind the Screen Time passcode.

Menu names and the available choices vary by iOS version and region. If your version uses different labels, look for the equivalent App Store installation and deletion controls inside the child’s Screen Time restrictions.

Use Ask to Buy and age-based limits

Turn on Ask to Buy for the child in Family settings when it is available for your family group. Eligible downloads then generate a request for parent review instead of silently appearing on the child’s phone. Age-based app restrictions reduce the catalogue of apps the child can request, but they do not replace reviewing the allowed list.

Review allowed and blocked apps

For an app that is already installed, inspect the allowed-app list and block it there if appropriate. Apple says a blocked app remains on the Home Screen but is dimmed and cannot be used. This is different from deleting the app, so the child can still see which app is restricted without being able to open it. Recheck the list after an iOS update or a change to the child’s age-based settings.

4. Filter websites independently of app limits

A child can open a restricted service in Safari or another supported browser even when its app is limited. Configure web access separately; an App Limit does not automatically create a matching website block.

Choose the level of web restriction

Setting What it does Best fit
Approved Websites Only or Ask to Browse Uses a tight allowlist. Ask to Browse requires approval when the child requests a new website in Safari and supported browser apps. Young children or situations where every new site should be reviewed.
Limit Adult Websites Uses Apple’s adult-content filter while allowing ordinary web browsing. Older children who need broader research access with a less restrictive filter.

Choose the option under the child’s Screen Time web-content controls. The exact label can vary by iOS release. Ask to Browse requires current supported software across the family group; update the parent and child devices before relying on it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Approve, revoke, and review requests

  1. When the child reaches an unapproved site, review the Ask to Browse request on the parent’s device, or enter the Screen Time passcode on the child’s device if you are approving it there.
  2. Approve only the site and duration that fits the request. An approval is not a reason to loosen the entire web filter.
  3. If a previously approved site becomes unsuitable, return to the allowed-website list and block it. Apple supports blocking a site later even after it was approved.
  4. Test the same destination in every browser the child is allowed to use. A filter that is configured for one supported browser may not answer an access path created by an app, an alternate account, or software that is not covered by the family’s current settings.

5. Define when and how long apps can be used

Use a schedule for broad access windows and time allowances for daily limits. They solve different problems: a schedule can make the phone unavailable during a recurring period, while an allowance limits use over the day.

Set a recurring schedule

  1. Open the child’s Screen Time page from the parent’s Settings and Family view.
  2. Choose the scheduling control, commonly labeled Downtime, and set the start and end times for each day.
  3. Review the apps that remain available during the scheduled period. Leave only the essentials the child needs, such as approved communication tools.
  4. Save the schedule and check the child’s phone after the next start time to confirm that restricted apps are dimmed.

Set daily App Limits

  1. In the child’s Screen Time settings, open App Limits and select an app category or individual app.
  2. Set the daily allowance and assign different values to different days when the software provides that option.
  3. Apply the limit from the parent account and verify that it appears on the child’s iPhone.

Limits can apply across categories, so inspect the category selection carefully. If the child can still use the same service through a browser, combine the App Limit with web filtering rather than increasing the limit to compensate.

Handle legitimate extra-time requests

Apple supports an explicit request flow for additional time. Require the child to request extra time instead of sharing the Screen Time passcode. Approve a defined interval from the parent’s device, then let the allowance expire automatically. This preserves the lock while accommodating homework, travel, or a one-time need.

6. Use Content & Privacy Restrictions to protect the settings around Screen Time

Screen Time limits are only as durable as the surrounding settings. Turn on Content & Privacy Restrictions for the child and review the controls that govern account changes, purchases, privacy changes, and passcode or device-setting changes. The exact categories and labels depend on the iOS version.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Keep the restrictions enabled after configuring individual App Limits and web controls.
  • Look for any option that permits account changes or other settings changes, and set it to the most restrictive choice appropriate for the child.
  • Revisit the restrictions after adding a new app, browser, or family member account.
  • Do not give the child the Screen Time passcode to make a temporary settings change; use the parent approval or extra-time flow instead.

These controls do not make every device action impossible. Their purpose is to prevent ordinary changes from being made without the parent’s code and to keep the configuration consistent.

7. Diagnose a suspected bypass systematically

When a limit appears to have failed, record what the child did and which device was used. Then check the likely route rather than turning off all controls and starting over.

What you observe Checks and supported response
The Screen Time settings changed. Confirm the Screen Time passcode is enabled, inspect its last-used date and time, and change it if the child may know it. Verify that you are managing the child’s account, not a different Apple Account.
An app was removed, installed again, or obtained after a request. Restrict app installation and deletion, turn on Ask to Buy where available, and review age-based and allowed-app settings. Check whether another family device approved the request.
Restricted content opens in a browser. Configure web filtering or Ask to Browse, test Safari and other supported browsers, and remove any site approval that is no longer appropriate.
Different devices show different limits. Update every device in the Family Sharing group, confirm the child’s Apple Account, and allow time for settings to synchronize before testing again.
A schedule or allowance behaves unexpectedly. Check the selected days, category or app selection, Downtime exceptions, and whether an approved extra-time interval is still active.
A new workaround is suspected. Capture the iOS version and exact steps, review the current Apple settings, and avoid treating an unverified online “trick” as an established bypass. Apple’s support instructions do not guarantee protection against every workaround, bug, or exploit.

Run a controlled test

  1. On the parent’s device, note the child’s account, iOS versions, Screen Time passcode status, App Store restrictions, web filter, and active schedule.
  2. On the child’s iPhone, test one restricted app, one browser destination, and the App Store without entering the parent’s code.
  3. Check whether the app is dimmed, whether the site generates an approval request, and whether installation or deletion is blocked.
  4. If a test succeeds when it should fail, change only the relevant layer and test again. This identifies whether the issue is an account, app, browser, synchronization, or schedule problem.

How to choose between stricter and lighter controls

The right configuration depends on the child’s age, the amount of independent browsing needed, and how often you can review requests. The following choices involve a trade-off between restriction and parent involvement.

Decision More restrictive choice More flexible choice Trade-off
Web access Approved Websites Only or Ask to Browse Limit Adult Websites The allowlist requires approval for new destinations; the broader filter requires more ongoing review.
App access Block installation and deletion; approve downloads Allow age-rated downloads with fewer requests Blocking closes reinstall routes but increases parent decisions.
Existing apps Explicit allowed-app list Age-rating limits An allowed list is precise; age ratings are easier to maintain but less specific.
Time control Fixed Downtime schedule plus short App Limits Longer allowances with occasional requests Schedules are predictable; allowances are easier to adapt during unusual days.

State the software and region requirements before selecting a feature. Ask to Browse and some approval choices depend on supported versions across the family group, and Apple can change menu labels in later releases.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Maintenance that prevents settings from drifting

Parental-control failures often come from configuration changes rather than a missing feature. Use a short review routine:

  • After every major iOS update: open the child’s Screen Time page and confirm the passcode, App Store restrictions, web filter, schedules, and allowed-app list.
  • When adding a browser or game: decide whether it needs its own App Limit and whether the same service can be reached on the web.
  • Monthly: inspect the allowed websites and apps, remove approvals the child no longer needs, and check the Screen Time passcode’s last-used indicator.
  • After an account change: verify Family Sharing membership and the Apple Account signed in on every relevant device.
  • When a device cannot update: expect older Screen Time behavior or missing features and avoid assuming that a setting available on the parent’s phone exists on the child’s device.

Keep a private record of the intended settings and the date you last checked them. That makes an unexpected change easier to identify without giving the child a list of possible codes or workarounds.

What these controls cannot promise

Apple’s documentation explains how to configure Screen Time, app restrictions, Ask to Buy, and web filtering; it does not claim that these controls stop every bypass. A software bug, an unsupported browser, an account mistake, or a newly discovered exploit may produce behavior that the settings do not cover. Present the system to the child as a set of household rules backed by technical limits, not as an unbreakable lock.

If a serious safety concern remains after the configuration above, preserve the details of the incident, update all family devices, change the Screen Time passcode, and review the account and browser paths again. Do not rely on an internet claim about a “secret” bypass unless you can reproduce it on the current software and identify which control it defeats.
