Prefer not to run the server on your own PC? Godlike.Host offers hosted 7 Days to Die servers with free DDoS protection and up to three free backups a day.
To stop an empty 7 Days to Die dedicated server safely, open its server console, run saveworld (or sa) to create an extra checkpoint, and then run shutdown. Wait until the server process has actually exited before starting it again. Do not end 7DaysToDieServer.exe from Task Manager or send a kill signal while the world may be saving.
The game does not have documented, built-in “stop automatically when no players are connected” behavior in the available references. If you need that policy, you must build or configure an operator script that detects an empty player list and then issues the same graceful commands, verifying that your installed server build supports the method.

How to stop 7 days to die server
The normal graceful sequence is deliberately short:
- Open a console with administrator access. This can be the in-game admin console, a web console, a Telnet session, or a console supplied by your hosting panel.
- Run
saveworld. The shorter alias issa. This requests an on-demand write of current chunk and player data to disk. - Run
shutdown. The command saves the world and stops the server application. - Confirm that the process has ended. On Windows, check that
7DaysToDieServer.exeis no longer running; on a managed host, wait for the panel to show the instance as stopped. - Only after the old process is gone should you start the server again.
The extra saveworld is useful even though shutdown performs a save itself. It gives the operator a separate checkpoint command and makes it clear that the world has been written before the stop request.

7 days to die shutdown command: what each command does
| Command | Purpose | When to use it | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
saveworld |
Requests an on-demand save of current chunk and player data. | Immediately before a planned stop, restart, backup, or maintenance task. | The command is also exposed through the alias sa. |
sa |
Short alias for saveworld. |
When you want the same save operation with less typing. | Check help on your installed build if the alias is rejected. |
shutdown |
Saves the world and stops the server application. | After the final save request, when you want a graceful stop. | Do not assume the operating-system process has exited until you verify it. |
say |
Sends a message to connected players. | Before a planned restart or maintenance window. | This is an announcement, not a save or stop command. |
loggamestate |
Logs game state for diagnostic purposes. | When collecting information before a restart or investigating state problems. | A crash-response guide recommends it as part of a restart routine; it is not a replacement for saving. |
How to shut down 7 days to die dedicated server from each console
In-game admin console
Use the in-game console only if your account has the required administrator permission. Enter saveworld or sa, wait for the command to be accepted, and then enter shutdown. If the command is reported as unknown or denied, do not switch to killing the process; fix the permission or command-version issue first.
Web or hosting-panel console
Open the panel’s live server console and submit the two commands as separate entries. A panel may mark the game as offline before the underlying process has finished closing, so confirm the process or the panel’s actual stopped state before pressing Start again. Starting a second instance while the first still owns the save files can create a failed launch or an unclear recovery situation.

The commonly documented server configuration lists TelnetEnabled as enabled by default on port 8081. Without a Telnet password, the listener is restricted to the local loopback interface, so a connection from another machine will not work until you deliberately configure remote access. Authenticate, issue saveworld (or sa), then issue shutdown, and close the session only after the server accepts the commands.
Remote stopping depends on the exact Telnet settings and the wrapper that launches the server. A LinuxGSM bug report describes graceful stopping failing because a wrapper used telnetpass while another part expected telnetpassword. If a manager reports a failed stop, inspect the variable names and the generated command rather than assuming that the game’s shutdown command is broken.

Permissions: why shutdown may be rejected
Dedicated-server console commands are restricted by default. The operator must have administrator permission before issuing administrative commands. Permission entries are kept in serveradmin.xml. A documented example for granting the highest administrator level is:
admin add <platform user id> 0
In that example, level 0 is the highest level. Replace the angle-bracketed value with the platform user ID used by your server; do not paste the brackets as literal characters.

The server’s serverconfig.xml contains an AdminFileName setting that identifies the permissions file. That file is located in the server’s Saves folder. If an account can join the game but cannot run administrative commands, verify that:
- The ID in
serveradmin.xmlis the correct platform ID. AdminFileNamepoints to the file you edited.- The server was restarted after a permissions-file change when your build requires it to reload the file.
- You are connected to the intended server instance, not a test or second instance using another Saves folder.
Command names and permission behavior can change between builds. Host guidance covering V3.2 warns that many online command lists describe older versions. Use the server’s own help command to confirm syntax for the build you actually run.

Why you should not kill the server process
Ending the process with Task Manager, kill, a forced panel stop, or an equivalent signal bypasses the game’s save and shutdown path. Community guidance warns that terminating the process during a save can corrupt the chunk currently being written. That warning is community advice rather than a published official guarantee, but it describes the practical risk: the operating system stops the application without giving it time to flush world and player data cleanly.
A forced termination may also leave a wrapper, lock, or child process behind. If the game appears offline but the executable remains active, launching another copy can fail because the first process still owns files or ports. The safe response is to wait, inspect the process list, and use the host’s documented recovery procedure. If a forced stop has already occurred, make a backup of the Saves directory before attempting repairs or a restart.

The console says the command is unknown
First, run help and compare the command spelling with the output from your installed build. Try the documented alias sa for the save operation. Do not infer that a command from an old forum post still exists; command lists can lag behind the game version.
The command is denied
Check administrator permission and the file selected by AdminFileName. Confirm that the account’s platform ID was entered correctly in serveradmin.xml, and reconnect after the permission change if the console session cached the old privilege state.

Players are disconnected but the process is still running
A 2024 Steam discussion reports this exact symptom after shutdown: the server went offline for players while 7DaysToDieServer.exe continued running, and the poster could not restart cleanly. The discussion did not establish a confirmed fix. Treat the game as not fully stopped until the executable exits. Check the host panel, operating-system process list, and listening port before trying Start again. If the process is genuinely hung, follow the host or operating-system recovery procedure and preserve the Saves directory before using a forced termination.
The server appears to stop but a restart behaves strangely
Do not launch a second instance immediately. Confirm that the old process has exited, then check that the expected configuration and Saves paths are being used. A separate Steam discussion titled “Using Dedicated server – Every restart = Day 1” records reports of in-game day progress resetting after restarts, but the title alone does not establish the cause or a fix. Treat any apparent rollback as an investigation issue rather than proof that shutdown intentionally resets the day.
The save appears stale
Run saveworld again, allow the console to finish handling it, and only then issue shutdown. If the world still loads with unexpected state, stop repeatedly restarting and make a copy of the Saves directory. Compare timestamps and configuration paths so you know which instance is writing the files. The available references do not provide a guaranteed repair procedure for a damaged or stale save.
Should an empty server stop automatically?
No automatic stop, pause, or save-on-empty behavior is established by the available documentation. The absence of connected players does not give you a reliable basis for assuming that the server has stopped, that it has written a final save, or that it will shut down on its own. Keep the process running unless you have an explicit, tested automation policy.

If your goal is to reduce resource use when nobody is playing, an operator-built script can count connected players and, when the count remains zero for your chosen interval, issue saveworld followed by shutdown. The exact player-count query, authentication method, timing logic, and process check depend on your server version and management layer. Test the script on a copy of the world first. It should:
- Read the connected-player count from a supported interface.
- Require the count to remain zero for a defined grace period so a brief disconnect does not stop the world.
- Optionally announce the pending stop with
say. - Issue
saveworld, wait for the save operation, and then issueshutdown. - Verify that
7DaysToDieServer.exehas exited before marking the job complete. - Record command output and failures so an unattended stop does not become a silent outage.
Because no single empty-server method is confirmed for every current build, verify each part against the commands and interfaces exposed by your installation.
A cautious restart routine
For a planned restart, a vendor/community crash-response guide recommends announcing the event with say, running saveworld, recording state with loggamestate, and then restarting. This is operational guidance, not an official guarantee, so adapt it to your maintenance process:
- Warn connected players with
say, including the expected downtime. - Run
saveworldand wait for the console to process it. - Run
loggamestateif you need a diagnostic record. - Run
shutdown. - Verify that the old process has exited.
- Start one server instance and watch the console for a clean initialization.
- Have a player reconnect and confirm that the expected world and player state load.
Do not treat a panel’s “offline” badge as sufficient evidence if the process list still shows the executable. A restart is complete only when the old instance is gone and the new instance has loaded the intended configuration and Saves path.
Practical stop checklist
- Identify the correct server instance and its Saves directory.
- Confirm that you have administrator permission.
- Tell players about the stop if anyone may reconnect during maintenance.
- Open the in-game, web, Telnet, or host-panel console.
- Run
saveworldorsa. - Run
shutdown. - Check that
7DaysToDieServer.exehas exited. - Only then restart, update, restore a backup, or close the maintenance session.
What is and is not confirmed
The command sequence is the established operational answer: save explicitly, then request a graceful shutdown, and verify process exit. The references do not establish a universal automatic stop when the server is empty, a guaranteed completion time for shutdown, or a confirmed fix for the reported process-still-running case. They also do not verify that a restart itself rolls back the in-game day. Keep those points as version- and environment-dependent checks rather than promises to players.
