The safe routine is simple: wash your hands and work surface, clean every bottle part with hot soapy water, rinse, then use a method that the equipment and your local health guidance allow. Boiling, steam sterilizers and cold-water solutions all require different times and handling. UK NHS guidance and US CDC guidance also differ on terminology, boiling time and how long routine sanitizing is needed, so use the recommendation for your jurisdiction rather than combining them.
Clean before you sterilize
Sterilizing cannot compensate for milk residue or grease left on a bottle. Cleaning removes the food film in which microorganisms can remain; the later heat or chemical step is an additional reduction in germs.
- Wash your hands. Use soap and running water, then prepare a clean work area.
- Take the bottle apart completely. Separate the bottle, collar, cap, teat, valve, vent and any other pieces. Germs and milk can collect where parts overlap.
- Wash with hot, soapy water. Use a dedicated bottle brush for the bottle and a small teat brush for the inside of teats and narrow openings. Scrub threads, valves and vents rather than relying on a quick rinse.
- Rinse every part. Remove soap and loosened milk before the sterilizing step.
- Inspect the equipment. Discard or replace cracked bottles, warped parts, split teats, sticky valves or pieces that no longer fit securely. Follow the feeding-equipment manufacturer’s material and temperature limits.
Use brushes reserved for feeding equipment so they are not carrying grease or food particles from another task. Rinse brushes after use and allow them to dry. Keep the bottle-cleaning area separate from raw-food preparation where practical, and wipe the counter before laying out clean parts.

A dishwasher cycle is therefore a cleaning step, not a reason to skip the additional heat or solution step.

Check compatibility before choosing a method
Read the bottle, teat, valve and sterilizer instructions together. A bottle may tolerate boiling while a special vent, coating or teat does not. Conversely, a steam appliance may be suitable for the bottle but unsuitable for a component the manufacturer says must be handled separately.
- Confirm that every part is approved for boiling, steam or cold-water solution before putting it into that process.
- Check whether the appliance has a maximum load, a particular rack position or a required water volume.
- Check solution labels for the correct concentration, contact time and whether treated parts should be rinsed.
- Replace parts that remain cloudy, tacky, cracked, stretched or misshapen after cleaning or heating.
- Keep instructions for an unusual valve or vent with the bottle so another caregiver does not guess.
When instructions conflict, do not choose the most convenient option by assumption. Contact the bottle or sterilizer manufacturer, or ask your pediatrician or local health authority which direction applies.
Choose a method without mixing instructions
| Method | What the guidance says | Advantages | Important cautions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Boiling | NHS instructions: boil equipment that is safe to boil for at least 10 minutes, with every part kept below the water. CDC’s US sanitizing instructions describe 5 minutes. | No dedicated sterilizer or solution is required. | Hot pans and water burn. Boiling can wear teats sooner, and not every material or component is boil-safe. |
| Steam | Use an electric or microwave steam sterilizer exactly as its manufacturer specifies. NHS Best Start guidance says bottle and teat openings should face down. | Convenient for repeated loads and avoids chemical solution. | There is no universal cycle time or loading pattern. The device and feeding-equipment instructions control. |
| Cold-water solution | For the NHS procedure, follow the solution label, remove trapped air, keep items submerged for at least 30 minutes and replace the solution every 24 hours. | Useful when heating equipment is unavailable or unsuitable. | Requires the correct concentration, contact time and continuous submersion. Keep solution and tablets away from children. |
These instructions are practical procedures, not head-to-head studies proving that one method is more effective than another. Select a method that is approved for your equipment and that you can perform consistently. Convenience matters because an incorrectly loaded sterilizer, an expired solution or a partly submerged bottle defeats the method you selected.
Boiling baby bottles safely
Use the NHS 10-minute procedure (UK guidance)
- Confirm that each bottle, teat and accessory is safe to boil. Check the manufacturer’s care information, especially for plastics, valves and painted markings.
- Put the fully disassembled, washed parts into a clean pan and cover them completely with water.
- Bring the water to a boil. Start a timer once a sustained boil is reached and keep the equipment submerged for at least 10 minutes.
- Check during boiling that no part has floated above the water. Use clean heat-resistant utensils if you must reposition anything.
- Turn off the heat and leave the equipment in the pan until you are ready to assemble it, or remove it with clean tongs and protect it from contamination.
Use enough water that parts remain covered throughout the timed period. If evaporation exposes a component, the exposed portion has not had continuous contact with boiling water; restore safe coverage and follow the applicable instructions rather than treating the original timer as complete.
The NHS warns that teats may be damaged faster by boiling. Inspect them after each cycle for tears, tackiness, stretching or changes in shape; replace any part that is damaged or no longer seals properly. Never reach into boiling water with bare hands, and keep the pan and hot water away from children.
Understand the CDC’s US timing
The CDC’s US instructions describe boiling disassembled feeding items for 5 minutes as a sanitizing option. That is different from the NHS’s 10-minute instruction. Do not average the times or present one as a worldwide rule: use the recommendation from the health authority relevant to your location and your equipment instructions.
Handling boiled items
Use clean tongs if you remove parts while they are hot. Set them on a clean, protected surface and let them air-dry if that is what your local instructions specify. Do not wipe interiors with a kitchen towel: the towel can transfer lint or germs. If you leave parts in the pan, keep the pan covered as far as practical and wash your hands before touching the equipment.

Using an electric or microwave steam sterilizer
- Read the device manual first. Models differ in the amount of water, cycle length, rack position, maximum load and whether a component may be placed inside.
- Check feeding-equipment compatibility. A bottle that tolerates steam may still have a valve, coating or teat that requires different care. Do not steam a part unless its manufacturer permits it.
- Load clean, disassembled parts. Under NHS Best Start guidance, position bottle and teat openings facing down so steam can reach the interiors and water can drain.
- Add only the specified water. Too little water can interrupt a cycle; too much can affect operation. Use the water type and quantity required by the appliance manual.
- Run the complete programmed cycle. Do not invent a shorter time by copying another model. For a microwave unit, follow the stated microwave wattage, water volume, cooling time and door-opening precautions.
- Keep the load protected afterward. Leave items in the closed sterilizer for the period the manual allows, or move them with clean hands or utensils to a protected area.
Do not open a hot microwave unit with your face over the lid. Steam can burn even when the appliance has finished. Allow the cooling period specified by the manual, and use the handle or tongs intended for the device.
The NHS states that manufacturers’ instructions matter because there are several types of sterilizers. A steam appliance should not be treated as interchangeable with another model simply because both use steam. Never assume that a longer or shorter cycle is safer; an incorrect water level or load can prevent the device from working as designed.
Using a cold-water sterilizing solution
Prepare the solution
Use a solution or tablet specifically intended for infant feeding equipment and follow its label for water volume, concentration and preparation. Do not substitute household disinfectant or change the concentration to make it “stronger.” Prepare the solution in the specified container, keep that container covered, and label or mark the preparation time so caregivers can track its age.
Keep every part submerged
- Place the washed and rinsed parts in the container specified for the solution.
- Fill the container so the solution reaches every surface.
- Remove trapped air from bottles, teats, valves and caps. Air pockets leave surfaces outside the required contact with the solution.
- Use the supplied floating cover or plunger, if provided, to hold all parts below the liquid.
- Under the NHS procedure, leave the equipment submerged for at least 30 minutes. Follow a longer contact time if the product label requires it.
- Replace the solution every 24 hours, or sooner if the product instructions require it. Mark the preparation time so an old solution is not mistaken for a fresh one.
Keep the container covered and out of children’s reach. Do not rinse treated parts unless the product label specifically directs you to do so; rinsing with an unclean source can re-contaminate them. If a part rises above the liquid, push it down with the cover or plunger and make sure the timing requirement is met while every surface is submerged.
What to do after sterilizing
Clean equipment can become contaminated through hands, counters, towels and cupboard shelves. Wash your hands before opening a sterilizer, removing items or assembling a bottle.
- Use clean utensils when required. The CDC describes removing boiled items with clean tongs.
- Keep interiors untouched. Hold bottles by the outside and avoid touching the inside of a bottle, teat or cap.
- Let items drain or air-dry as directed. The CDC advises air-drying sanitized items in a protected area rather than wiping them with a potentially dirty towel.
- Store them protected. NHS guidance advises leaving bottles and teats in the sterilizer or pan until needed when practical. For another method, use the covered container or storage procedure specified by the solution or appliance manufacturer.
- Assemble only when needed. If you assemble bottles in advance, use clean hands and keep the assembled bottles covered.
Do not place freshly treated parts on a damp dish towel or in an unwashed cupboard. If an item touches an unclean surface, handle it according to the method instructions rather than assuming it is still clean.
How often should bottles be sterilized?
There is no single worldwide schedule. The NHS says to sterilize feeding equipment until the baby is at least 12 months old. That is UK guidance and should not be silently applied to every country.

The CDC uses the term “sanitize” for an extra germ-removal step after cleaning. It says daily sanitizing may not be necessary for older, healthy babies when feeding items are carefully cleaned after every use. The CDC places particular emphasis on daily sanitizing when a baby is younger than 2 months, was born prematurely or has a weakened immune system.

Follow the health authority where you live, your pediatrician’s advice and the equipment manufacturer’s instructions. If your baby has a medical condition or was born prematurely, ask the clinical team for an individualized routine rather than relying on a general age rule. Regardless of schedule, clean feeding equipment after every use so milk does not dry onto surfaces.
Common problems and fixes
A part floats during boiling
Remove it only with a safe utensil after reducing the burn risk, then restart the required timing if the part was not continuously submerged. Do not count time during which it was above the water.
A teat becomes cloudy, sticky or misshapen
Stop using it and replace it. Boiling can accelerate teat wear, and a damaged teat can leak, split or fail to fit securely.
There are bubbles inside a cold-water bottle
Turn and tilt the bottle under the solution until the air escapes. Use the container’s cover or plunger to keep it down, and do not start counting the contact time until all surfaces are submerged.

The solution is older than one day
Discard it and prepare a fresh batch according to the label. Under the NHS procedure, solution is changed every 24 hours.
A bottle has an unfamiliar valve or vent
Do not leave the part assembled during cleaning or sterilizing just because it is difficult to remove. Check the bottle instructions for disassembly, brush access and method compatibility. If the part cannot be cleaned or treated as directed, ask the manufacturer before using it.
A practical decision guide
- Choose boiling when every component is confirmed boil-safe and you can supervise a pan safely. Use the local authority’s timing—NHS 10 minutes in the UK or CDC 5 minutes in the cited US procedure.
- Choose steam when you have a compatible electric or microwave unit and can follow its exact loading, water and cycle instructions.
- Choose cold-water solution when a heat-free process suits your circumstances and you can maintain the correct concentration, at least 30 minutes of NHS contact time, full submersion and a 24-hour replacement schedule.
Whichever option you choose, the non-negotiable sequence is clean thoroughly, rinse, inspect, use a compatible method for the required time, and protect the equipment afterward. If local public-health advice conflicts with a generic product leaflet, ask your pediatrician or health authority which instruction takes priority for your baby.
Which guidance is being used?
The NHS pages use “sterilise” and provide UK household methods, including the 12-month recommendation, 10-minute boiling instruction and cold-water procedure. The CDC page, “How to Clean, Sanitize, and Store Infant Feeding Items,” uses “sanitize,” describes a 5-minute boiling option and explains why daily sanitizing is especially important for younger, premature or immunocompromised infants. Their terminology and scope differ, so naming the source and location is part of using the instructions safely.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to sterilize bottles after washing them in the dishwasher?
The NHS says a dishwasher cleans feeding equipment but does not sterilize it. Follow the additional sterilizing or sanitizing step required by your local health guidance and the bottle manufacturer.
How long should I boil baby bottles?
The NHS procedure calls for at least 10 minutes with every part submerged. The CDC’s US sanitizing instructions describe 5 minutes. Use the timing that applies to your jurisdiction; do not combine or average them.
Can every baby bottle be boiled?
No. Confirm that the bottle, teat, valve and other parts are safe to boil. Plastics, coatings and special components can have different temperature limits, and boiling may wear teats faster.

Is there one standard steam-sterilizer cycle?
No. Electric and microwave models differ in water quantity, loading, cycle length, microwave wattage and cooling instructions. Follow the exact appliance manual and the feeding-equipment instructions.
How long do bottles stay in cold-water sterilizing solution?
Under the NHS procedure, keep all parts fully submerged for at least 30 minutes, remove air bubbles and use the product label for any different or longer contact time. Replace the solution every 24 hours under that procedure.
Should I rinse bottles after cold-water sterilizing?
Follow the solution label. Do not rinse unless it directs you to do so, because an unclean rinse source can re-contaminate treated parts.
Recommended Free Tools
When can I stop daily sanitizing?
Guidance differs. The NHS recommends sterilizing until at least 12 months. The CDC says daily sanitizing may not be necessary for older, healthy babies whose items are carefully cleaned after every use, while emphasizing it for babies under 2 months, born prematurely or with weakened immune systems.
How should I handle bottles after sterilizing?
Wash your hands, avoid touching interiors, use clean tongs for boiled items when needed, and air-dry in a protected area rather than wiping with a questionable towel. Keep items in the closed sterilizer, pan or covered container until needed when practical.
The Bottom Line
Clean every part first, then use only a method and timing approved for that equipment and your local guidance: NHS boiling is at least 10 minutes, CDC’s cited US option is 5 minutes, steam is model-specific, and NHS cold-water treatment requires at least 30 minutes submerged with a fresh solution every 24 hours. Protect treated parts until use.
