The dependable way to work while traveling is to arrange a primary internet connection and a separate fallback before you leave. Compare your carrier’s roaming service with a destination-compatible local SIM, international eSIM, or cellular hotspot. Then confirm that your phone is unlocked, your devices support the destination’s networks, tethering is permitted, and your employer allows work from that country and location.
Use trusted mobile data or an employer-approved hotspot for sensitive work whenever possible. Treat hotel, café, airport, airplane, and other public Wi‑Fi as untrusted; verify the network name and avoid sensitive activity on it. Device updates, encryption, strong authentication, backups, physical custody, and an approved remote-access method matter just as much as the connection itself.
Start with a connectivity plan, not a Wi‑Fi search
Travel connectivity fails most often because a crucial assumption was never checked: the roaming plan excludes the destination, the phone is carrier-locked, the eSIM cannot be activated there, tethering is prohibited, or a one-time login code is sent to a number that is no longer reachable. Write down the requirements for your actual work before choosing a data option.

Define what your work requires
- Estimate how much data you need for email, messaging, cloud files, video meetings, remote desktops, and uploads. A plan that is adequate for text may not support several hours of video calls.
- Identify whether you must receive calls or SMS authentication codes on your existing number. Keeping that line active may be more important than finding the cheapest data.
- Check whether your employer requires a corporate device, a managed hotspot, a particular VPN, device certificates, or access only from approved countries.
- Decide what must remain available if the primary connection fails: emergency contacts, calendars, downloaded documents, travel directions, and a way to notify colleagues.
Check the destination and your devices
Coverage and technical availability vary by country, territory, and carrier. Ask your carrier whether your exact plan works at the destination and whether roaming includes data, calls, SMS, and tethering. Confirm any daily allowance, speed reduction, overage rule, activation requirement, and support number before departure.

Check that the phone is unlocked if you may use another provider. Verify that it supports the destination’s cellular bands and the SIM format you plan to use. For an eSIM, confirm both eSIM support and the provider’s official destination availability. A compatible phone does not guarantee service: local registration, identity checks, import rules, or restrictions on SIMs and eSIMs may still apply.
Choose a primary and a fallback
Your fallback should not depend on the same failure as your primary. For example, a second eSIM using the same local network may not help during a carrier outage, while an offline contact list and downloaded files still provide a minimum viable work plan. The best combination depends on the destination, the sensitivity of your work, and the consequences of being offline.
| Primary option | Useful when | Advantages | Checks before purchase or activation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Existing-carrier roaming | You need your usual number and a quick setup | No SIM swap; calls, SMS, and authentication may continue normally | Destination coverage, total cost, data cap, speed policy, calls/SMS, tethering, and activation steps |
| Local physical SIM | A local provider offers reliable coverage and your phone is unlocked | Can provide local pricing and a local number or large data allowance | Registration rules, official purchase channel, supported bands, activation time, and whether your original line can remain available |
| International eSIM | You want to arrange data before arrival and your phone supports eSIM | No physical card; installation can be completed before departure | Official app or website, destination availability, data allowance, validity period, APN instructions, and tethering policy |
| Phone or dedicated cellular hotspot | A laptop needs internet without venue Wi‑Fi | Connects several devices through cellular data; a dedicated unit can preserve phone battery | Local coverage, compatible bands, SIM/eSIM support, carrier lock, passphrase, encryption, battery, power supply, and data/tethering limits |
| Hotel, café, or other public Wi‑Fi | No trusted mobile option is available | May be free and fast enough for low-risk tasks | Exact network name, employer policy, privacy limits, captive portal behavior, and a plan to avoid sensitive work |
Compare roaming, SIMs, eSIMs, and hotspots by trade-off
Carrier roaming
Roaming is usually the least disruptive option because your existing number remains in the phone. It can be the right choice when authentication messages, incoming calls, or a short trip outweigh the cost of another service. Ask the carrier to confirm the destination in writing or through its current account information; a neighboring country or a territory with a similar name may be treated differently.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsRead the terms for the exact line you will use. Some plans include a fixed daily amount, others have a monthly cap, and some reduce speed after a threshold. Confirm whether tethering is included rather than assuming that phone data can be shared with a laptop. If you use dual SIM, verify which line handles data and which line receives SMS.
Local SIM
A local SIM can be practical where local networks are strong and your phone is unlocked. Buy from an official carrier shop, airport counter operated by the carrier, or another reputable outlet. Some countries require identity registration, a passport scan, or a local address. Keep the receipt and packaging until activation is confirmed.

Swapping cards can make your usual number unavailable and can create confusion about which line receives authentication messages. If your phone supports dual SIM, leave the original line enabled for SMS only when the carrier permits it and disable data roaming on that line to prevent accidental charges. Government travel guidance notes that a trusted international roaming plan may be preferable to a local SIM in high-risk countries, where purchasing or registering a local line can introduce additional risk.
International eSIM
An international eSIM can be installed before departure, but availability is not universal. Confirm that the phone is eSIM-capable and not locked to a carrier. Use only the provider’s official site or app, check that the destination is explicitly listed, and save the activation instructions offline. Some plans begin their validity period when installed rather than when first connected.
Check whether the eSIM is data-only, whether it supplies a phone number, and whether tethering is allowed. Keep a record of the eSIM label and the data line selected in your phone settings. In some countries, eSIM services may be restricted; an installation that works at home may not activate after arrival.
Phone or dedicated mobile hotspot
A hotspot keeps a laptop off hotel or café Wi‑Fi. The Canadian Centre for Cyber Security recommends a corporate mobile-device hotspot for approved telework where feasible. Use a strong, unique passphrase and the strongest encryption the device supports. Change the default hotspot name and password, and turn the hotspot off when it is not needed.
A phone hotspot is convenient but can drain the phone quickly and may be limited by the phone plan. A dedicated 4G LTE hotspot router can preserve phone battery and connect several devices, but it adds another battery, SIM or eSIM, charger, and compatibility decision. Check supported cellular bands, carrier lock status, local SIM registration, data and tethering limits, and whether the device can be powered from the destination’s outlets. Test the exact hotspot, SIM, laptop, and plan together before leaving.

Public Wi‑Fi
Public Wi‑Fi is a contingency, not a private office network. The U.S. Department of State warns: “Don’t expect privacy on Wi-Fi provided by hotels, airplanes, internet cafes, or public spaces.” Verify the network name with staff or the venue’s printed information; attackers can create similarly named networks. Do not enter passwords, open sensitive records, upload confidential files, or conduct high-risk administrative work merely because a network displays a familiar name.

Use this checklist for each device and each connection option:
- Phone status: confirm the phone is unlocked, supports the destination’s bands, and has the correct SIM or eSIM capability.
- Plan permissions: verify roaming, tethering, hotspot use, international calling, and SMS reception separately. Data service alone does not prove that tethering or authentication will work.
- Data-line selection: on a dual-SIM phone, identify which line supplies mobile data and disable data switching if it could move traffic to an expensive line.
- Laptop requirements: update the operating system, confirm the employer’s remote-access software runs, and test a full login through the planned hotspot.
- Power: pack a destination-compatible plug adapter and a charger or power bank that can sustain the phone or hotspot during a work session.
- Local rules: check SIM registration, import restrictions, VPN or eSIM availability, and any rules affecting the work you plan to perform.
Get permission to work from the destination
Employer approval
International remote work can create security, tax, employment, export-control, insurance, or contractual issues. Ask HR, security, or your manager for approval before booking the trip. Provide the countries and dates, the devices you will use, the type of information you will access, and the connectivity method.
Request the approved remote-access path: corporate VPN or zero-trust service, required device management, certificate or token handling, and any prohibited locations or networks. Canadian telework guidance emphasizes organizational risk assessment and approved devices and methods. It is not a blanket permission to work from any country.
Immigration and destination rules
Check whether your planned activity is permitted under the destination’s immigration status. The U.S. Department of State advises travelers to check work-visa and destination requirements; the relevant rule depends on the country and the actual activity, not merely on whether your employer is abroad. A meeting, client delivery, paid service, or access to regulated information may be treated differently from tourism.

Some organizations impose stricter limits than local law. The UK guidance covering OFFICIAL and SECRET information includes international-work approvals and controls for classified work. Those controls are not a universal rule for every traveler, but they illustrate why your employer’s policy may prohibit access from particular countries, hotels, or shared spaces.
Prepare devices before departure
- Install updates: update the phone, laptop, browser, conferencing tools, endpoint protection, and employer applications through official channels. Restart and verify that the updates completed.
- Protect access: use a strong device passcode, a short automatic-lock interval, and multi-factor authentication. Prefer an authenticator or hardware security key when employer policy supports it; do not assume SMS will work after changing SIMs.
- Enable encryption and recovery: confirm full-device encryption, make a current backup, and enable the platform’s remote-lock and remote-erase features. Store recovery codes securely and separately from the device.
- Install approved access tools: configure the employer-approved VPN or remote-access method, then test email, file access, messaging, and any remote desktop from the exact hotspot you intend to use.
- Prepare offline materials: download only the files and applications your employer allows. Save emergency contacts, itineraries, and essential phone numbers where they can be viewed without internet.
- Test the connectivity kit: activate the roaming setting or eSIM according to the provider’s instructions, connect the laptop to the hotspot, place a test call or receive a test code, and check battery life.
- Pack safely: carry the phone, laptop, hotspot, chargers, and adapters in hand luggage. Do not leave them unattended in checked baggage or a vehicle.
Work securely while traveling
Use mobile data or an approved hotspot first
When you arrive, connect through the cellular line or hotspot that you tested. Set a hotspot passphrase that is difficult to guess, use the strongest supported encryption, and limit the number of connected devices. Turn off automatic joining for unknown Wi‑Fi networks so the laptop does not silently switch away from the trusted connection.
Monitor the carrier’s data meter. Large operating-system updates, cloud synchronization, and video calls can consume data unexpectedly. Schedule nonessential updates for an approved unlimited connection or after returning home, while keeping security updates current as required by your employer.
Use public Wi‑Fi only for low-risk tasks
If public Wi‑Fi is unavoidable, verify its name and follow the employer’s policy before connecting. Do not accept a network certificate warning, install an unknown profile, or download software from a captive-portal pop-up. Disconnect after the task and remove the saved network from the device.
A VPN can help protect traffic on an untrusted network when it is legal in the destination and approved for the device and work. It is not a complete defense against phishing, malware, compromised endpoints, weak passwords, or software flaws. Continue to verify sign-in prompts, links, attachments, and requests for sensitive information.

Control physical exposure
- Keep devices with you and lock the screen whenever you step away.
- Position screens to reduce shoulder-surfing in airports, trains, cafés, and shared workspaces.
- Use privacy-filtering hardware if your employer requires it for sensitive work.
- Do not connect unknown USB drives, charging cables, keyboards, or other peripherals. Use your own charger and adapter.
- Avoid discussing confidential work where conversations can be overheard, and use a private room approved for the sensitivity of the information.
Troubleshoot by isolating the failure
There is no cellular signal
Move outdoors or to a location with a clearer view, restart the phone, and confirm that the correct line is enabled. Check whether the destination is included in the plan, whether roaming is enabled, and whether the SIM or eSIM completed registration. If the carrier requires manual network selection, follow its official instructions. Switch to your prepared fallback rather than repeatedly changing settings that could create charges.
Data works on the phone but not on the laptop
Confirm that tethering is included in the plan, that the hotspot is broadcasting, and that the laptop has the correct password. Forget and rejoin the hotspot, then check whether a device limit has been reached. If a dedicated hotspot is used, verify its SIM status, APN settings, battery, and cellular signal separately.
The eSIM or SIM will not activate
Use the provider’s official activation path and confirm that the device is unlocked. Check that the destination is supported and that the phone has a stable internet connection for installation. Do not delete a working eSIM while troubleshooting unless the provider confirms that it can be reinstalled; retain the activation details offline.
Authentication codes are not arriving
Confirm which line receives SMS, that the original line is still active, and that data roaming is disabled only where intended. Use an employer-approved authenticator, hardware key, or recovery method if available. Contact the organization’s help desk through a verified number rather than disabling security controls.
The connection is slow or repeatedly drops
Check the carrier’s data cap or fair-use threshold, move away from congestion, and reduce video quality temporarily. Pause nonessential synchronization and close applications using background data. If the hotspot battery is low or overheating, power it safely and use the fallback connection for essential tasks.
Respond quickly to loss or suspected compromise
If a phone, laptop, or hotspot is lost, stolen, altered, or behaving unexpectedly, report it through the employer’s incident process immediately. Use the remote-lock or erase function, revoke active sessions and tokens when instructed, and contact the carrier to suspend the SIM or eSIM. Do not continue working around a suspected compromise simply because the internet connection still functions.
Warning signs include unexpected MFA prompts, new device-management profiles, unexplained password resets, antivirus or encryption warnings, unfamiliar Wi‑Fi certificates, and files or messages sent without your action. Record the time, location, device, network, and symptoms for the security team. Follow the organization’s instructions for preserving evidence and changing credentials.

Choose the option that satisfies all of these conditions: it works at the destination, your device supports it, tethering and data limits fit the workload, activation follows local rules, your employer approves the access method, and you have a fallback that does not share the same failure point. For sensitive work, prefer trusted mobile data or an approved hotspot, keep devices updated and encrypted, and treat every public network as observable rather than private.
