You can learn how digital assets work and how to evaluate the risks, but no strategy can guarantee a profit. Buying an asset because you expect to resell it for more is speculation, and crypto markets can be volatile, illiquid, and vulnerable to fraud. This guide is framed around U.S. federal guidance; tax rules, legal treatment, regulation, and platform availability may differ elsewhere and can change.
What counts as a digital asset?
For U.S. tax purposes, the IRS describes a digital asset as a digital representation of value recorded on a cryptographically secured distributed ledger or similar technology. The category includes cryptocurrency, stablecoins, and non-fungible tokens (NFTs). The label alone does not tell you what rights an asset provides or what risks it carries. The IRS overview of digital assets explains the federal tax context and examples.
How do you get started without assuming a profit?
Start by learning how the asset and its market work, then decide whether you understand the possible losses and practical responsibilities. The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) warns that virtual currencies are more volatile than traditional fiat currencies and that many cash markets are not regulated or supervised by a government agency. Its virtual-currency trading advisory explains these risks.

Buying because you expect the price to rise and plan to sell later is speculation, not a dependable income plan.
- Understand the asset. Ask what it does, what rights or claims it gives you, how it is transferred, and what could affect its value. Do not treat an issuer’s promotional claims as established facts.
- Consider what could go wrong. The CFTC identifies uncertainty around valuation, future adoption, competitors and technological change, demand, liquidity, and theft. A position can lose value, and you may not be able to sell when you want to.
- Understand the practical work. Decide how you would store and recover access, what fees may apply, and what records you may need for tax reporting.
- Pause if anything is unclear. If you cannot explain how the asset works or how you could lose money, do not let pressure or a promised return substitute for understanding.
The CFTC’s guidance on buying digital coins or tokens recommends researching the asset, the rights attached to it, and the factors that could influence its value. These questions are a way to identify what you still need to understand, not a score or a recommendation to buy.

How should you compare custody options?
Custody is about who controls the keys that provide access to assets. The two broad approaches below involve different responsibilities; neither eliminates the risk of loss. The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) says a wallet stores private keys or passcodes used to access crypto assets, rather than the assets themselves. Its December 12, 2025 custody bulletin advises investors to understand how custody and fees work.
| Consideration | Third-party custody | Self-custody |
|---|---|---|
| Who controls access? | A custodian holds or manages access; ask who controls the private keys and what happens if you lose account access. | You are responsible for protecting the private keys or passcodes that provide access. |
| Recovery | Ask the custodian what its account recovery process is; the process depends on that provider. | A seed phrase can restore access if a private key or device is lost or damaged, so protecting the recovery information is essential. |
| Fees to check | Ask about asset-based, transaction, transfer, setup, and closure fees. | Ask about any applicable transaction or transfer fees; the SEC bulletin does not establish a universal fee schedule. |
| Main responsibility | Evaluate the custodian’s controls, terms, and recovery process. | Safeguard keys and recovery information yourself; losing them can mean losing access. |
A hardware crypto wallet is one optional device category for people who choose self-custody. It does not make a person safe by itself: access still depends on how keys and recovery information are handled. Before choosing any custody method, understand its fees, transfer process, recovery arrangements, and what happens if access is lost.

How can you spot a crypto investment scam?
Stop and verify independently before sending funds or personal information if someone contacts you unexpectedly or promises returns that sound certain. The CFTC says, “There is no such thing as a risk-free transaction or a guaranteed money-making opportunity.” Its Digital Asset Frauds guidance describes schemes involving online approaches, purported trading platforms, and demands for additional withdrawal charges or fake taxes.
- Unsolicited contact through social media or messaging, including a profile that may be fake.
- Claims of guaranteed, risk-free, or unusually reliable returns.
- A trading site promoted by an online acquaintance, especially if you have not independently verified the platform and its claims.
- Pressure to send crypto quickly or to pay another fee or tax to release supposed profits.
Do not send money to unlock a promised balance just because a site displays profits. The CFTC also states, “There is no such thing as a guaranteed investment or trading strategy,” in its virtual-currency risk advisory.

Do you have to report digital assets on U.S. taxes?
The IRS treats digital assets as property for U.S. tax purposes. It says income from digital assets is taxable and that some activity may need to be reported, including receiving, selling, exchanging, or otherwise disposing of a digital asset. What applies depends on your circumstances; consult the IRS’s current digital-asset instructions and retain transaction records. This overview is not individualized tax advice.

There is no single classification that applies to every token in every transaction. On March 17, 2026, the SEC announced an interpretation addressing how federal securities laws apply to certain crypto assets and transactions. The CFTC joined it with guidance that the agency and its staff would administer the Commodity Exchange Act consistently with that interpretation. The SEC release discusses categories including digital commodities, digital collectibles, digital tools, stablecoins, and digital securities. The interpretation is U.S. federal guidance; classification depends on an asset’s features and the transaction. Read the SEC’s March 17, 2026 release for its scope.
