For a first viewing, use release order: begin with Star Wars: A New Hope, then continue through the original, prequel and sequel trilogies. This keeps the revelations in the sequence audiences originally experienced. Choose chronological order if you would rather follow the fictional history from Anakin Skywalker’s beginnings. StarWars.com says either approach is valid; the real choice is between original reveal sequence and in-universe continuity.
Release order or chronological order: which should you choose?
There is no mandatory way to watch the saga. StarWars.com’s May 1, 2025 Star Wars Movies and Series Viewing Guide presents both release and chronological options, and its conclusion is unambiguous: “Whichever order you choose…is the right one!”
- Choose release order for a first visit, especially if you want the original pacing, context and reveal sequence.
- Choose chronological order if your priority is the fictional timeline and Anakin’s life story from its beginning.
- Choose an expanded film-and-series order only when you are ready for a much larger project. Anthology stories, overlapping series and continuing releases make a complete timeline less simple than a nine-film list.
The simplest beginner route is to watch the nine numbered theatrical films in release order, then add the anthology films and series that interest you. That is a practical scope recommendation, not an official requirement.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat do “release order” and “chronological order” actually mean?
Release order means watching titles in the order audiences first received them. For the numbered saga, that starts with Episode IV even though the fictional story has already begun. Chronological order means arranging the numbered episodes by their in-universe history, beginning with Episode I. Episode numbers therefore identify chronology, not production or debut order.

These choices affect more than the first title. The first six films were made as three connected release-era chapters, while the later trilogy revisits the galaxy after a time jump. A viewing plan should therefore be chosen before the first film, not changed whenever a new title appears.
The nine episodic films in release order
Release order follows the dates the numbered films reached audiences. It starts in the middle of the fictional history with Episode IV, then moves to the original trilogy, the prequel trilogy and finally the sequel trilogy.
| Sequence | Film | Episode | Release year |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Star Wars: A New Hope | IV | 1977 |
| 2 | Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back | V | 1980 |
| 3 | Star Wars: Return of the Jedi | VI | 1983 |
| 4 | Star Wars: The Phantom Menace | I | 1999 |
| 5 | Star Wars: Attack of the Clones | II | 2002 |
| 6 | Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith | III | 2005 |
| 7 | Star Wars: The Force Awakens | VII | 2015 |
| 8 | Star Wars: The Last Jedi | VIII | 2017 |
| 9 | Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker | IX | 2019 |
The years and titles above follow the film list in the official viewing guide. Stop after any trilogy if you want a natural break, but watch each trilogy in the order shown rather than mixing its films with another era.
Can I watch just one trilogy?
Yes. The original trilogy (Episodes IV–VI) is the cleanest short introduction and ends at a natural story resolution. The prequel trilogy (I–III) works as a history-first arc, while the sequel trilogy (VII–IX) assumes familiarity with the earlier films and is best saved for after them. Watching one trilogy first is not the same as creating a new franchise order; simply return to the remaining trilogies in release order when you are ready.
Why release order is the best default for newcomers
It preserves the intended reveals
The original audience met the universe through A New Hope, not through the events later labeled Episodes I, II and III. Subsequent films were written and released with that audience knowledge in mind. Watching in release order therefore preserves the way relationships, history and major turns are disclosed across the saga.
It follows the franchise’s creative history
Moving from the 1977–1983 original trilogy to the 1999–2005 prequels and then the 2015–2019 sequels lets you see how the saga’s eras were introduced over time. You can then decide whether to explore stories made between those trilogies without interrupting your first pass through the central nine-film arc.
It limits the first commitment
Starting with nine films gives a clear endpoint. You do not need to learn every series, anthology title or timeline qualification before understanding the central story. After Episode IX, you can choose side stories based on the characters and periods you enjoyed.
It is easier for a group
A group can agree on “start with A New Hope” without debating where a dozen shows overlap. Release order also prevents a newcomer from encountering a prequel-era explanation before the original films establish why that information matters. If some viewers already know the saga, ask them not to announce twists or recommend a side story until the first nine films are complete.
The nine episodic films in chronological order
Chronological order follows the numbered episodes from the earliest point in the fictional timeline to the latest. It begins with the prequel trilogy, proceeds through the original trilogy and ends with the sequels.
| Sequence | Film | Episode |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Star Wars: The Phantom Menace | I |
| 2 | Star Wars: Attack of the Clones | II |
| 3 | Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith | III |
| 4 | Star Wars: A New Hope | IV |
| 5 | Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back | V |
| 6 | Star Wars: Return of the Jedi | VI |
| 7 | Star Wars: The Force Awakens | VII |
| 8 | Star Wars: The Last Jedi | VIII |
| 9 | Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker | IX |
What chronological order changes
You encounter Anakin’s early life and the political changes of the prequel era before the original trilogy. That creates a continuous historical narrative, but information supplied by the prequels can reveal or reframe major developments that the original trilogy was designed to unveil later.

Chronological viewing is therefore a strong choice for someone who already knows the broad cultural spoilers, wants a history-first experience, or is introducing the setting to children. In a 2018 StarWars.com discussion, contributor Dan Zehr wrote: “The conventional method of viewing the Star Wars films in historical, chronological order is certainly legitimate and is absolutely the way I would introduce this universe to children.” See the full discussion in From a Certain Point of View: What is the Best Star Wars Viewing Order?

Pick the timeline-first route if you are most interested in Anakin’s complete arc, want each political era to follow the previous one, or are watching with children who prefer a straightforward historical progression. It is also convenient for a rewatch after you already know the major reveals. The trade-off is deliberate: prequel information arrives before the original trilogy’s discoveries.
How to decide in five minutes
- Ask whether this is your first exposure. If yes, select release order unless you have a specific reason to prioritize the timeline.
- Protect or sacrifice reveal order. Choose release order to protect the original sequence; choose chronological order if knowing later context early is acceptable.
- Choose your story anchor. The release sequence begins with the rebellion-era viewpoint; the chronological sequence begins with Anakin’s childhood and the prequel-era galaxy.
- Set a stopping point. Plan for the nine episodic films first. Treat series and anthology films as optional additions rather than prerequisites.
- Tell your viewing group the rule. Agree on one order before pressing play so that someone does not accidentally show a prequel or sequel first.
A practical first-time plan
Plan A: the recommended film-first route
- Watch Episodes IV, V and VI in release order.
- Continue with Episodes I, II and III.
- Finish with Episodes VII, VIII and IX.
- Only after that, select anthology films or series according to your interests.
This route gives you the complete numbered saga without requiring a decision about where every spin-off belongs. You can pause after Episode VI, after Episode III or after Episode IX; each point is easy to identify when planning several evenings.
Plan B: a timeline-first route
- Watch Episodes I, II and III.
- Continue with Episodes IV, V and VI.
- Finish with Episodes VII, VIII and IX.
- Add side stories later, using the current official guide to place them.
Do not alternate between these plans midway through the nine films. Switching order changes which information arrives first and makes the comparison less meaningful.
Plan C: a gradual expanded route
Complete the nine films first, then add one side story or one series at a time. This lets you decide whether you prefer prequel-era politics, the rebellion, the New Republic or sequel-era stories without committing to every title. Keep a simple checklist and mark whether you are following a title-level placement or a detailed episode order; those are not always identical.
Where anthology films and series fit
The official guide covers more than the nine numbered films, including anthology films and television series. Its broad chronological list places several stories between the prequel and original trilogies, then continues through the New Republic period, the era around the sequel trilogy and later material.
Stories around the prequel era
- The Clone Wars film and series are placed after Attack of the Clones.
- Tales of the Jedi is positioned around the prequel period.
- The Bad Batch follows the transition out of the prequel-era conflict.
- Maul – Shadow Lord, Solo, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Andor, Rebels and Rogue One appear before A New Hope in the guide’s expanded sequence.
Stories that lead into or overlap the original trilogy
Andor and Rebels take place concurrently and both lead into Rogue One. Watching one does not automatically determine where every episode of the other belongs, so a complete chronological marathon requires more than sorting titles by a single date.
Stories around the sequel era
Resistance begins before The Force Awakens and continues beyond it. If you place the series strictly before the sequel trilogy, you will not be following its entire in-universe span. This is one reason the official guide is more useful than a simple nine-row timeline when you are ready for an all-media watch.
Why not insert every spin-off between the films?
A side story can be chronologically earlier without being the best next viewing choice. For example, placing every rebellion-era title before A New Hope creates a long prelude before the film that originally introduced the galaxy. The nine-film route keeps the core arc legible; the expanded route is best treated as a second pass.

Why an all-media chronology is complicated
Anthology series span multiple periods
Tales of the Jedi, Tales of the Empire and Tales of the Underworld are anthology series. Their individual stories cover a wide period, so assigning each entire series to one point on a timeline hides meaningful differences between episodes.

Series can overlap instead of lining up
Concurrent shows may share the same broad era while following different characters and events. A title-level list can tell you the general placement, but it cannot always provide a perfect episode-by-episode sequence.
The catalog changes
The official viewing guide is dated May 1, 2025 and includes the franchise’s broader film-and-series listings through later announced material. The catalog also continues to grow: The Mandalorian and Grogu had an official theatrical release date of May 22, 2026. New stories and release formats can change the catalog, so check the guide again when beginning a comprehensive rewatch.
How to handle The Clone Wars
The Clone Wars film and series belong between Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith in the broad timeline. Lucasfilm’s March 17, 2014 episode-order guide provides an official sequence for the series that differs from its original broadcast or release order.

Managing spoilers when watching with other people
- State the order before the first film. “Release order” and “chronological order” mean different starting points, so do not assume everyone uses the same definition.
- Do not display episode numbers as a substitute for sequence. Episode numbers identify the fictional chronology, while release order deliberately begins with Episode IV.
- Keep side stories optional. A friend who has seen a spin-off should not insert it into a first-time viewer’s nine-film plan without agreement.
- Use spoiler-free labels. Call a session “Episode IV” or use the full title rather than describing a character’s later role.
Where to watch and what you need
The viewing order itself requires no special hardware, physical collection or companion book. StarWars.com describes the catalog as available on Disney+, but service libraries vary by country and can change. Check the current catalog in your region before scheduling a marathon rather than assuming every listed title is available everywhere.
A subscription may be necessary for streaming, but the viewing plan does not depend on a particular service, physical edition or accessory. If you buy discs or digital copies, use the same sequence above; changing format does not change chronology. If a film or series is unavailable in your market, keep the sequence unchanged and resume when you can access the missing title legally. Avoid replacing a missing episodic film with a spin-off simply because it occupies a nearby timeline position; the central nine-film narrative is designed to be followed as listed.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Starting with Episode I because it has the lowest number
Episode numbering describes in-universe chronology, not the order in which the films were made available. For a first viewing, starting with Episode IV preserves the release-era reveal sequence.
Trying to include every series immediately
The expanded catalog contains overlapping timelines and anthology episodes. Beginning with all of it can obscure the simple decision you actually need to make. Finish the nine episodic films, then expand selectively.
Treating a broad timeline as an episode-by-episode guarantee
A title can span more than one period, and concurrent series may lead into the same film. Use the official guide for broad placement and the dedicated episode-order guidance when a series requires finer ordering.
Assuming streaming access is universal
An official association with Disney+ does not guarantee identical regional availability. Verify your country’s catalog at the time you watch.

Mixing two orders accidentally
Watching Episodes IV and V, jumping to Attack of the Clones, and then returning to the sequels is neither release order nor chronological order. It can be enjoyable for a repeat viewer, but it removes the clear comparison this guide is designed to provide. Pick one sequence for the first nine films and save experiments for later.

After Episode IX: choosing what to watch next
Once you finish the nine films, use your interests to choose a direction:
- Want more prequel-era context? Try The Clone Wars, Tales of the Jedi or The Bad Batch.
- Want the period leading to the original film? Consider Andor, Rebels and Rogue One, bearing in mind their overlap.
- Want another perspective on the original-era characters? Use the official guide to place Obi-Wan Kenobi and other stories around the original trilogy.
- Want sequel-era world-building? Explore Resistance with its timeline crossing the period of The Force Awakens.
At this stage, chronological placement becomes a useful organizing tool rather than a barrier to entry. You can watch a complete series in its recommended episode order, or select a self-contained film without restarting the entire saga.
Frequently asked questions
What order should I watch Star Wars in for the first time?
Watch the nine numbered films in release order: Episodes IV, V, VI, I, II, III, VII, VIII and IX. This preserves the original reveal sequence and gives you a manageable endpoint before you explore spin-offs.
Is chronological order better than release order?
Neither is universally better. Chronological order follows the fictional timeline and Anakin’s life, while release order preserves the way the saga was introduced. StarWars.com considers either order valid.

Can children watch in chronological order?
Yes. Dan Zehr’s 2018 StarWars.com discussion specifically describes chronological viewing as a legitimate way to introduce the universe to children. Consider the child’s tolerance for prequel-era politics and the amount of viewing time available.
How often should I check the official list?
Check it when planning an all-media marathon because new films and series can change the broader catalog. For the stable nine-film choice, the two sequences in this guide remain straightforward.
The bottom line for a first viewing
Watch the nine numbered films in release order if you want the most reliable introduction: A New Hope, the rest of the original trilogy, the prequels and then the sequels. Choose chronological order when following Anakin’s story from its earliest point matters more than preserving the original reveals. Both are legitimate, and the official guide supports either. Add spin-offs and series only after deciding how much of the wider catalog you actually want to watch.
