You can start vlogging with the phone you already own. Choose one small story, find a spot with decent light and quiet sound, and make a short test recording before buying gear. A standalone camera is optional; add equipment only when you can identify a specific problem it will solve.
What you need for your first vlog
Start with a phone, a clear idea, and a simple filming plan. YouTube Help says, “You can always start with your mobile device’s camera. It’s a great option before you invest in a standalone camera.” Its equipment guidance recommends choosing gear around your style, production goals, and budget—not buying a complete setup upfront.
- A story you can film in one session: for example, a short activity, useful demonstration, local outing, or before-and-after.
- Understandable speech: move close to the microphone and reduce background noise.
- Soft, available light: try a window indoors or shade outdoors.
- Stable framing: brace the phone or use a compatible mount if you need hands-free shots.
A dedicated camera becomes worth considering when your phone cannot handle a recurring need—such as stable walking footage, a particular lens effect, or a compatible external microphone connection. YouTube’s advice is platform guidance, not independent camera testing.

Keep the first video manageable. Give it an opening that tells viewers what is happening, a few moments that move the story forward, and an ending. A day-in-the-life moment, a short how-to, or a local outing can all work. No particular structure guarantees audience growth; the point is to give yourself a clear path through the shoot.

Choose the format and location
Think about where people will watch and how you will shoot. YouTube’s mobile guidance recommends holding a phone horizontally for 16:9 high-definition video. GoPro’s guide maps landscape 16:9 to YouTube and vertical 9:16 to TikTok or Instagram Reels. These are platform and manufacturer recommendations, so check the current requirements of your intended destination.
At the actual location, check both light and sound. If filming outdoors, account for weather, access, equipment transport, and power; scouting in advance can help you avoid surprises.
Set up your phone and framing
- Use auto mode if you are new to camera controls. You can learn manual settings later if a specific shot requires them.
- Use the rear camera where practical. YouTube says it records at higher resolution than the front camera on many phones.
- Hold the phone horizontally for a 16:9 YouTube video. For another platform, confirm its current format guidance before filming.
- Disable notifications so alerts do not interrupt a take or appear on screen.
- Lock focus and exposure if your phone supports it, to reduce distracting changes while recording.
- Record a framing test. Check the background, make sure the microphone is not covered, and confirm that the subject is in focus.
A compatible smartphone tripod can hold a hands-free, steady shot; a flexible mount may help with unusual placements. YouTube also mentions a selfie stick for walking shots and a GorillaPod for attaching a phone in different locations. Check that any mount fits your phone and case.

Make speech easy to hear
Clear speech is more important than adding complicated equipment. Place the speaker close to the phone, then listen to a short test recording. Check for fan noise, traffic, wind, room echo, and nearby activity. YouTube’s mobile filming advice suggests reducing background noise and softening hard, flat surfaces with items such as cloth or pillows.
YouTube’s equipment guide says an onboard camera microphone may work best when the subject is three to four feet away; treat that as guidance, not a universal distance guarantee. In a noisy setting, or when the phone must be far from the speaker, an external microphone may help. YouTube describes shotgun microphones as useful for natural sound from farther away and wireless lavalier microphones as useful when recording a speaker at a distance. Before buying, confirm that the microphone, receiver, connector, and phone or camera work together.
Use the light you have
Soft, even light helps preserve detail in bright and dark areas. Indoors, try positioning yourself near a window. Outdoors on a sunny day, shade can reduce harsh highlights and deep shadows. A white card or reflector can bounce light toward a shadowed side of the face.

Protect privacy and get permission
Plan for consent and privacy while choosing the location and checking the frame—not only when uploading. YouTube advises getting any needed permission from businesses, property owners, or bystanders, and respecting people’s privacy. Avoid including someone’s image, voice, or personal information without consent. Check the background for home addresses, postal codes, phone numbers, and other identifying details.
Run a preflight check before recording
- Test the camera, microphone, and any lights you plan to use.
- Check your framing and listen to a short audio sample.
- Choose camera resolution and settings for the intended destination and editing workflow.
- Charge devices and bring chargers; check available storage for the length of the shoot.
- If you are traveling, label and pack the equipment you need.
For GoPro cameras specifically, GoPro’s guide also recommends updating firmware, formatting its microSD card, cleaning the lens, checking the battery, and testing framing and audio. Those steps are product-specific; use the relevant instructions for other devices.

Add equipment only to fix a real problem
Film a short test with your current setup, then identify what is limiting the result. YouTube’s budget advice is to buy affordable equipment and upgrade as your video-making needs become clearer.
| Problem to solve | Possible addition | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The phone moves or you need hands-free framing | Smartphone tripod or flexible mount | Phone and case fit; stability for the intended placement |
| Speech is distant or hard to understand in noise | Phone-compatible external microphone | Connector, receiver, and device compatibility |
| Window light or shade does not suit the shoot | Soft light or reflector | Whether it suits the room, available power, and filming style |
| A long recording outlasts available storage or battery | Device-compatible storage or spare power | Requirements for the specific phone or camera |
For GoPro camera products, the manufacturer lists a fast microSD card and spare batteries as relevant gear. Do not assume those requirements apply to every recording device.

Choose a camera for the filming situation, not a universal “best beginner camera” label. DJI’s manufacturer guide suggests comparing stabilization, external microphone input and sound, autofocus, intended shooting scene, and budget. Its category guidance describes gimbal or action cameras as suited to walking footage and mirrorless cameras as an option for indoor footage with background blur, while noting tradeoffs in size, weight, and stabilization. This is manufacturer guidance, not an independent comparison.

For a model-specific example, GoPro’s November 27, 2025 guide describes the HERO13 Black Creator Edition as supporting up to 5.3K/60 video, HyperSmooth 6.0 stabilization, and modular lens support. The same guide says LIT HERO shoots 4K60 and weighs 93 grams. These are GoPro-published specifications for those products, not independent performance findings; specifications and availability can change, so check the manufacturer’s current details before deciding.
Compare the full setup cost, not just the camera body: microphone, mounts, lights, power, and storage may also affect the budget. If your phone already records the story you want with usable sound and stable framing, there is no need to upgrade before you begin.
