To start playing Hallowed Concepts, install the expansion for Risk of Rain 2, begin a run, and look for a gong in a stage. Ringing a gong starts a Trial. The DLC released on October 8, 2026; its Trials are part of regular runs, not a separate campaign path. The exact steps for enabling the DLC vary by platform and are not specified in the official materials linked below.
What you need before starting
- The base game: Steam states that Hallowed Concepts requires Risk of Rain 2. Install or confirm both through your platform’s library or game-management tools. The official sources establish the requirement but do not give platform-specific installation clicks. Steam’s Hallowed Concepts listing
- The expansion: Hallowed Concepts began releasing on October 8, 2026, for Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC, according to 2K’s patch notes. Steam also lists October 8, 2026 as the release date. 2K’s October 8, 2026 patch notes
On Steam, the expansion is downloadable content for the base game. The official release notes distinguish the purchasable DLC from free base-game updates included in the same patch, so not every change arriving with that patch requires the expansion.
How to access the Trials
- Launch Risk of Rain 2 and start a run.
- Explore the stages and look for a gong. The developers describe the gongs as placed in stages by N’Kuhana’s followers; there is no single guaranteed stage location established in the official preview.
- Read the Trial objective shown by the game, then ring the gong to begin. Each Trial has its own objective and rewards.
- After reaching a reward area, choose whether to take the reward and move on or ring another gong to chain a further Trial. The timer is shared across chained Trials, so continuing uses the time you have left.
The developer’s September 8, 2026 preview groups Trials into Winnowings of Survival, Predation, and Mortality. Its examples include breaking enough lanterns in the Trial of Broken Glass, turning a fortune before time runs out in the Trial of Infernal Greed, and feeding the fog in the Trial of the Abyss. Steam says one player in a lobby needs to own Hallowed Concepts for its monsters, levels, and items to appear for the whole lobby. A non-owner cannot select the expansion’s new Survivors or permanently unlock its DLC content, such as new items and logbooks.

What does Hallowed Concepts add?
2K’s October 8, 2026 patch notes list two new Survivors—Enforcer, unlocked by default, and Acolyte, unlockable—along with the N’Tormat Curio, new enemies and bosses, standard and Trial stages, interactables, Hexes, Hallowed Items, standard items, skins, and music. The notes give specific counts: three new enemies, three new bosses, three new standard stages, 14 Hexes, 11 Hallowed Items, and three new standard items. Those counts describe the categories as listed in the patch notes; they are not a combined total.

The Trials also offer their own objectives and rewards. The official preview describes the N’tormat page as a reward for Trial efforts, but does not provide a universal strategy for deciding whether to chain another Trial; weigh the current objective, available reward, and shared time remaining.
