To start “In the Eternal Fire’s Shadow,” speak to the Eternal Fire priest outside Devil’s Pit in Velen. Enter the mine, follow the quest markers and Reinald’s trail, defeat possessed Reinald and the Red Miasmal, then talk with Reinald’s spirit to resolve the quest. Your final dialogue choices affect the priest’s fate; completing the quest awards the basic Forgotten Wolven gear diagrams.
How to start the quest
Travel to Devil’s Pit in Velen and speak with the Eternal Fire priest standing outside the mine. Devil’s Pit is east of Mulbrydale. The priest gives Geralt the lead that starts the quest and directs him into the mine.

What level should you be?
Published guides disagree: VULKK recommends level 6, while TheSixthAxis lists level 15. Treat either number as a guide-specific recommendation, not a definitive requirement. If you go in at a lower level, expect the later fights to be challenging.

Explore the mine and prepare for the fight
- Enter the mine and follow the quest markers through its passages.
- Read Reinald’s letters and the notes you find as you explore; they provide context for what happened in the mine and matter to the concluding conversation.
- Reinald’s Philter is optional preparation identified by walkthroughs. Consider using it before the later encounters, particularly if you are underleveled.
Defeat possessed Reinald and the Red Miasmal
The quest’s main encounters come in sequence: first possessed Reinald, then the Red Miasmal. After the fights, speak with Reinald’s spirit to settle the story and receive the quest reward. Follow the quest markers between encounters so you do not miss the conversation that concludes the quest.

Choose the priest’s fate
The final conversation has branching outcomes rather than one mandatory ending. To pursue the outcome in which the priest survives and remains at Devil’s Pit, bring him to speak with Reinald, make clear that Geralt found evidence of a priest who stayed behind to help, and use the conciliatory dialogue. One walkthrough-supported route points out that not all priests are wicked and that the deacon does not need the Church to do good; Reinald may then forgive him.
Surface what you learned in the mine before settling on the final responses. The outcome depends on the preceding conversation as well as the conciliatory approach, so it is not simply a matter of choosing one isolated line. Other choices can end less favorably for the priest.
Quest reward and what comes next
Completing the quest awards the basic Forgotten Wolven armor and weapon diagrams. A separate scavenger hunt offers later upgrades; the diagrams from this quest are the basic set, not those later upgrades.
