You can start a WooCommerce dropshipping store without buying inventory in advance, but you cannot outsource the responsibilities of a retailer. The practical sequence is: prepare WordPress hosting and HTTPS, install WooCommerce, select suppliers that can document and deliver the products, configure checkout and taxes, connect a controlled supplier workflow, test a complete order, and launch with a small catalog.
Dropshipping changes who stores and dispatches the goods. It does not remove your obligations for accurate product information, lawful sales, refunds, customer support, product safety, tax, customs, or the delivery promises shown on your site.

In a conventional store, you purchase stock, keep it in a warehouse, and ship each order. In a dropshipping arrangement, your WooCommerce site accepts the customer’s order and payment, then sends the order details to a supplier. The supplier packs and dispatches the parcel, usually using a carrier and tracking number that you pass back to the customer.
You remain the customer’s merchant and point of contact. If an item is unsafe, misdescribed, late, damaged, lost, or impossible to return, the customer will normally pursue your business, not your supplier. Software can transmit data and reduce manual entry; it cannot transfer that legal and commercial responsibility.

Prepare the infrastructure before installing WooCommerce
Register a domain and choose suitable hosting
Use a domain that matches your store name and a WordPress host that supports HTTPS, backups, current PHP, and a database compatible with WooCommerce. A staging environment is valuable because it lets you test plugin updates, payment changes, and supplier integrations without interrupting the live shop.

Ask a host whether backups are automatic, how long they are retained, and whether you can restore individual files and the database. Confirm that support can help with PHP limits, cron jobs, email delivery, and SSL renewal. A low monthly price is not useful if an order-import failure leaves your inventory out of date.

The WordPress.org WooCommerce listing records these minimums and recommendations. They can change, so check the current plugin listing immediately before deployment.

Enable HTTPS before taking real orders. WooCommerce compliance guidance states that a valid SSL certificate is required by most payment gateways. After activation, confirm that the home page, shop, cart, checkout, account pages, images, and webhooks all load over https:// rather than mixed HTTP content.
Choose a market and suppliers before listing products
Define the delivery promise you can keep
Decide which countries you will serve, what delivery services are acceptable, and whether duties or taxes may be collected at checkout or on delivery. A supplier’s advertised transit time is not the same as a customer’s total wait: processing time, weekends, customs clearance, carrier hand-offs, and failed deliveries all add variance.

Request evidence from each supplier
Before importing a product, ask the supplier for written answers and retain them with your business records:
- Which warehouse or warehouses dispatch the item, and from which country?
- What is the normal processing time and the observed range during busy periods?
- How often is inventory updated, and is the feed a CSV, API, email, or portal export?
- What carrier services and tracking events are available for each destination?
- How are defective, damaged, incorrect, and lost parcels handled?
- Who pays return shipping, and where must a customer send a return?
- Which product specifications, certifications, markings, warnings, manuals, and language versions are available?
- Can the supplier provide neutral or branded packing slips and remove its own promotional material?
- What personal data is shared to fulfill an order, where is it stored, and how is access controlled?
Order samples to check packaging, instructions, dimensions, materials, labeling, and the time between payment and dispatch. A sample does not prove every future unit is perfect, but it can expose an unusable return address or an unrealistic delivery promise before advertising begins.
Compare suppliers on total landed cost
The supplier price alone is not your margin. Calculate a per-order landed cost that includes:
landed cost = product price + supplier shipping + duties + import taxes + payment fees + expected refund/return cost + advertising costUse a conservative allowance for refunds, reshipments, currency conversion, and failed deliveries. If a supplier changes prices or shipping by destination, record those rules rather than relying on a single headline figure.

Install WordPress and WooCommerce
- Secure the site. Point the domain to your host, enable the SSL certificate, and force HTTPS. Set a unique administrator password and enable two-factor authentication if your host or security extension supports it.
- Install WordPress. Use the host’s installer or the standard WordPress package. Set the site title, timezone, administrative email, permalink structure, and update policy.
- Install WooCommerce. In the dashboard, open Plugins > Add New, search for WooCommerce, select the official plugin, choose Install Now, and then Activate. Review the plugin’s current server requirements at this point rather than relying on an old checklist.
- Complete the setup flow. Enter the legal business address, selling locations, currency, product type, payment methods, shipping zones, and tax approach. Use the real business location because it affects tax and shipping defaults.
- Set account and privacy behavior. Decide whether guests can check out, what account information is retained, and which privacy notices appear on registration and checkout.
Do not install a collection of automation extensions before the basic shop works. First confirm that a manually created product can be purchased, paid for, taxed, assigned a shipping method, and refunded.
Configure catalog, shipping, payments, and tax
Build a product page that sets accurate expectations
For every dropshipped item, write or edit the page rather than blindly publishing supplier copy. Include the model or SKU, dimensions, materials, included parts, compatibility, care instructions, warnings, age limits, country of origin where required, processing time, delivery estimate, and return conditions. Use clear images that represent the actual item and state when colors or packaging can vary.
Separate “processing” from “delivery.” For example, explain that the supplier may take several business days to dispatch before the carrier’s estimated transit begins. If a destination may incur import charges, state that prominently before payment instead of surprising the buyer at the door.

Create shipping zones and rates
In WooCommerce > Settings > Shipping, create zones that match the destinations you truly serve. Add the available methods and rates to each zone, then test an address in every zone. Do not promise free shipping until the supplier’s destination-specific charge, duties, and likely reshipment cost are included in your margin.
If products ship from different warehouses, explain whether an order can arrive in multiple parcels and how shipping is charged. A single cart containing items with incompatible delivery services needs a deliberate rule; otherwise WooCommerce may display a rate that the supplier cannot fulfill.
Connect payment methods securely
Activate only gateways that support your business country, currency, product category, and checkout flow. Complete the gateway’s verification and webhook setup, then make a test payment in its sandbox where available. Never store raw card details in WordPress. Keep gateway, WordPress, theme, and extension updates on a controlled schedule and monitor failed payment notices.
Choose a defensible tax approach
WooCommerce can calculate and display taxes, but it does not decide which taxes your business owes. Determine whether you must register, collect, remit, or document tax in each destination. Obtain local professional advice when rules are unclear, especially for cross-border sales, digital records, mixed tax rates, or regulated products.

What the WooCommerce Dropshipping extension can do
The official WooCommerce Dropshipping extension describes a workflow in which you assign products to suppliers, import inventory from supplier CSV files, send branded order notifications, provide suppliers with restricted order access, and collect tracking numbers and carrier names. Its product page also describes an order-automation flow for AliExpress. Capabilities, licensing, and supported integrations can change, so confirm the current documentation before purchase.
A sensible setup keeps approval controls at first:
- Create a supplier record and map each store SKU to one supplier SKU.
- Import a small CSV and inspect titles, variants, prices, stock quantities, images, and attributes before publishing.
- Configure the supplier notification template without exposing information the supplier does not need.
- Give the supplier the least-privileged order view required to fulfill the parcel.
- Require manual review for price changes, low stock, restricted destinations, high-value orders, and address anomalies.
- After dispatch, verify that the carrier and tracking number map to the correct WooCommerce order and trigger the intended customer email.
Automation is optional. A reliable manual process is safer than an automated process that sends orders for out-of-stock products or silently changes a retail price. Before increasing volume, compare the supplier feed with the supplier’s actual inventory, shipping charge, and dispatch time over several order cycles.
Design a failure-safe order flow
Define what happens when a feed fails, a SKU disappears, a price rises, payment succeeds but the supplier rejects the order, or tracking never receives its first scan. Pause automatic submission when data is stale. Keep the order in a visible “on hold” state, notify a staff member, and contact the customer with a realistic option: wait, substitute only with consent, or receive a refund.

Publish the trust and compliance pages
Before advertising, add plainly written pages and link them from the footer and checkout:
- Contact: business name, reachable email, response expectations, and any required geographic address or phone number.
- Shipping policy: processing time, delivery ranges by destination, tracking behavior, split shipments, customs responsibility, and what happens after a failed delivery.
- Returns and refunds: eligibility, deadlines, exclusions that are lawful in your market, return address, damaged-item evidence, refund timing, and who pays postage.
- Privacy notice: what customer and order data is collected, why it is shared with payment and fulfillment providers, retention, rights, and contact details.
- Terms: ordering, payment authorization, availability, acceptable use, liability limits that are lawful, and dispute information.
- Product safety disclosures: warnings, age restrictions, certifications or markings, installation requirements, and language information required for each destination.
A valid SSL certificate protects personal and payment information in transit, but HTTPS is not a substitute for secure passwords, updates, least-privilege accounts, backups, and careful supplier data handling.
Handle product safety, taxes, and customs as the retailer
Verify the laws of every market you target. Depending on the product and destination, you may need conformity evidence, safety testing, electrical markings, chemical disclosures, age warnings, instructions in a local language, or special packaging. Keep copies of certificates and the exact product version they cover; a generic supplier statement may not be enough.
Platform guidance on dropshipping emphasizes that the merchant must comply with the laws and regulations applying to a retailer of the products sold. Treat that as a responsibility principle, not jurisdiction-specific legal advice.
For cross-border orders, determine who is importer of record and how duties and taxes are collected. EU consignments may involve import VAT and, where the conditions are met, the Import One-Stop Shop (IOSS). If the correct process is not used, a customer can face VAT or customs charges on delivery. Rules and thresholds change, so obtain local tax and legal advice before promising “tax included” or “no extra fees.”

Run a complete test order before launch
Use a low-risk product and a real destination address that you control. Test the entire path in both normal and exception states:
- Open the product on a phone and desktop, select each required variant, and add it to the cart.
- Enter an address in each shipping zone and confirm the displayed rate, delivery estimate, and tax treatment.
- Authorize a payment, then verify the WooCommerce order status, gateway transaction, and customer receipt.
- Confirm that the supplier receives the right SKU, quantity, address, customer contact details, and any private order note.
- Check that inventory decrements once, not twice, and that a failed or canceled order restores stock according to your rule.
- Have the supplier dispatch a test parcel and send a valid carrier and tracking number.
- Verify the customer tracking email, carrier link, sender identity, and delivery estimate.
- Request a cancellation before dispatch and a refund after payment. Record the time, status changes, gateway result, and customer emails.
- Test a damaged or unavailable-item scenario and confirm that a human can pause automation and contact the buyer.
Fix ambiguous states before buying traffic. A customer should never have to guess whether an order is paid, awaiting stock, dispatched, or eligible for a refund.

Launch with a small catalog and monitor the operation
Start with a manageable set of products whose documentation, stock feed, and delivery route you understand. During the first weeks, review orders daily rather than assuming automation is correct. Track operational measures that reveal problems early:
- Time from payment to supplier acceptance and from acceptance to first carrier scan.
- Stock mismatches, price changes, canceled orders, and split shipments.
- Delivery-time variance by destination and carrier, not just the supplier’s best estimate.
- Refund, return, damage, chargeback, and reshipment reasons.
- Support volume and the time required to answer “where is my order?” questions.
- Contribution margin after product, shipping, duties, taxes, payment fees, refunds, and advertising.
Expand only when these records show that the supplier can maintain stock, dispatch within the promised window, provide usable tracking, and resolve exceptions. Replace or pause products that repeatedly create safety questions, late deliveries, unexplained charges, or negative margin.
