To “call” someone on PS4, start or join a PlayStation party: it supports live voice chat, while Messages is for text. PS4 party chat is not a documented way to dial an ordinary phone number.
Start a party or join a friend’s party
- From the PS4 home screen, press Up to open the function screen.
- Select Party > Start Party, then follow the prompts.
- Choose Open Party for broader access or Closed Party to limit it to selected players.
To join a party already in progress, open Party and select it from the list. You can also accept a friend’s invitation by pressing the PS button; recent invitations appear under Notifications. Once connected, party members can talk in real time. Sony describes PS4 parties as supporting voice chat and text messages (PlayStation Support: create and join a party on PS4).
Choose who can join
An open party can be joined by the owner’s friends and friends of party members. A closed party is limited to selected players. The party owner can adjust party details and invitation settings, including requiring a request to join. Choose an open party for a wider gathering; use a closed party when you want an invite-only conversation.
Mute your microphone or send a text instead
During a party, press Options to open the Quick Menu and select Mute Microphone when you want to stop transmitting your voice.

For a message rather than a live conversation, open Messages from the function screen, select Create Message, choose the recipients, type your message, and send it. Text messages are asynchronous; sending one does not start a voice chat.
Fix common party audio problems
You cannot hear other players
- Open Settings > Devices > Audio Devices > Output Devices.
- Confirm that the intended output device is selected.
- If you are using headphones, check Output to Headphones.
Sony notes that, under the described PS4 specifications, voice chat and game audio cannot be output to both the headset and TV at the same time (PlayStation Support: change audio output on PS4).

Your microphone is not picking up your voice
- Go to Settings > Devices > Audio Devices > Adjust Microphone Level.
- Speak and check whether the Input Volume meter responds.
- If it does not, Sony suggests trying a different headset or controller to help diagnose the problem.
A PS4-compatible headset with a microphone may be useful if you do not have a suitable audio device. A headset is not required for every setup, and compatibility can vary; Sony’s guidance does not endorse a particular model.

Open Party > Party Settings > Chat Audio, then choose Prioritise Party Chat or Prioritise Game Chat according to which conversation you want to hear. Menu wording or paths may differ by system software or region.

Check privacy settings if invitations do not work
On PS4, open Settings > Account Management > Privacy Settings and select the feature you want to change. Communication controls govern who may interact with you through parties, games, and messages. These settings are account-related; a family manager, parent, or guardian may manage settings for a child account (PlayStation Support: privacy settings on PS4).
Blocking someone prevents mutual messaging and party participation. If two blocked players are in the same party chat, they will not hear one another. Privacy restrictions or a block can therefore explain why an invitation or conversation does not work as expected (PlayStation Support: block players).

Use the PlayStation App for party voice chat
In the PlayStation App, select a party from the parties menu, then select the Voice Chat icon to talk with party members. This is an app-based way to join party voice chat, not a conventional call to a phone number (PlayStation Support: voice chat on the PlayStation App).

How many players can join a PS4 party?
Sony’s undated PS4 beginner guide states that a party can include up to eight players. Because Sony’s newer party support page does not repeat that maximum, check the current on-console party settings if the exact limit matters (Sony’s PS4 beginner guide).

Will party chat be included in a recording or broadcast?
Not necessarily. Sony says party audio includes only players who have allowed their voices to be shared through Party Settings > Allow Your Voice to Be Shared. Do not assume everyone in a party has consented to having their voice captured (PlayStation Support: capture gameplay and screenshots on PS4).
