To create a fresh Space Engineers world on a Windows dedicated server, open SpaceEngineersDedicated.exe, create or select a server instance, choose New game under New game / Saved worlds, configure the scenario and world rules, set the server and network details, then click Save and start. Choose Saved worlds only when you are loading an existing save, such as a single-player world copied to the dedicated server’s save directory.
The important decision comes before launch: the scenario template and asteroid-generation amount are creation-time choices. Select them carefully because they cannot be changed later for an existing save. The procedure below covers a brand-new map, migration of a local world, multiple server instances, network access and the failures most often caused by incorrect folders or ports.

What “new world” means on a dedicated server
Space Engineers presents two different actions in the server configuration:
- New game generates a world from a scenario and applies the world-creation settings you choose.
- Saved worlds loads a world that already exists in the dedicated server’s save location.
If your goal is a genuinely fresh map, use New game. Selecting Saved worlds does not create another blank universe; it displays saves that the dedicated server can find. This distinction also determines how you move a single-player game to the server: copy the save first, then select it from Saved worlds.

The instructions below assume the official Windows dedicated-server tool. The server host must be able to run the dedicated executable, write to its save directory and accept connections on the configured listening port.
Decide the world and server settings first
Write down the choices you want before starting the instance. Some settings are easy to change later, while others are embedded in the world when it is created.

Start a completely new world
1. Install or open the dedicated-server tool
Install or launch the official Space Engineers Dedicated Server tool on the Windows machine that will host the world. Run SpaceEngineersDedicated.exe. The configuration window is where you create an instance, select a world and start the server; it is not the regular in-game single-player menu.
2. Create an instance and open its configuration
Create a server instance, or use the available Local/Console instance if you are configuring the first server on that machine. Select Continue to server configuration. Treat each instance as a separate server: it needs its own world selection, settings and listening port.
3. Select New game, not Saved worlds
In New game / Saved worlds, choose New game. The control is specifically intended to let you choose between starting a world generated from a scenario and loading a previously saved world. A scenario list or new-world setup screen should then become available.

4. Choose the scenario and open Customize
Select the scenario that matches the type of play you want. Continue into Customize to open the world-settings controls. Set the asteroid amount and the gameplay rules, including whether the world is survival or creative, along with the other rules exposed by the server tool.

Review this screen slowly. Scenario templates and asteroid-generation choices are made during world creation. If you later decide that you chose the wrong template or asteroid amount, the supported remedy is to create another world rather than expecting the existing save to accept that change.
5. Configure the server identity and access
Open Server settings and enter the server name and world name. Set the listen IP appropriate to the host, then add a password if the server should not be open to everyone who can discover it. Where your setup uses Steam group visibility, configure that option here as well.
For a single instance, choose a port that is available on the host. If this machine will run more than one Space Engineers server, assign a different listening port to every instance before starting either one.
6. Save the configuration and start the server
Click Save and start. This action writes the configuration and launches the server using the new-world settings. Allow the first startup to finish before testing a connection; the server must complete world creation and begin listening before a client can join.

7. Connect from the game
Open Space Engineers on a client computer and use the multiplayer/server browser. Find the configured server name, or connect with the host address and port when the server is not discoverable. Enter the password if one was set. If remote players cannot reach the server, use the networking checks in the troubleshooting section rather than changing world-generation settings.
Move a single-player world to the server
A local world can be hosted without rebuilding it. The regular game stores its saves under the Windows path AppDataRoamingSpaceEngineersSaves. The dedicated server uses a corresponding save directory under its own installation or data location.
1. Stop changes to the local save and make a backup
Exit the local game so that all recent changes have been written. Make a separate backup of the save folder before copying it. Keep that backup untouched until the migrated server world has started successfully and you have verified that the expected player data, builds and settings are present.
2. Copy the world folder
Open AppDataRoamingSpaceEngineersSaves and identify the folder for the world you want to host. Copy that complete folder, preserving its contents and folder name, into the corresponding SpaceEngineersDedicated save directory. Do not leave the only copy in the regular game’s save location; the dedicated process reads its own save location.
3. Reopen server configuration and select the save
Return to the dedicated-server tool and open the instance configuration. In New game / Saved worlds, choose Saved worlds. The copied world should now appear in the list. Select it, then review the server name, listen IP, password and port in Server settings.

4. Start and verify the migrated world
Choose Save and start, connect from a client and check the world before inviting other players. If the world does not appear, stop the server and check the folder placement first; a copy that remains only in the regular game’s directory will not populate the dedicated server’s list.
Back up the migrated folder before changing settings or installing mods. A backup gives you a known-good rollback point if a setting change or mod prevents the world from loading.

Existing worlds do not expose every creation option. In particular, the scenario template and asteroid amount are selected while creating a new game and cannot be changed later for that save. The server may still allow other world rules to be edited, but availability depends on what the game exposes for an existing world.
Use this decision rule:
- If the option is presented in the new-world generation flow and is absent or locked when an existing save is selected, treat it as a creation-time setting.
- If the option remains available for the existing save, change only that setting, save the configuration and keep a backup first.
- If you need a different scenario template or asteroid amount, create a new world with New game and the desired values, then start that world as a separate instance or replace the old save only after preserving a backup.
Running more than one server instance
Multiple instances can share a host, but they cannot listen on the same port. Give every instance its own listening port in Server settings. A second server that fails immediately or will not stay running commonly indicates a port collision.
Keep the instances operationally separate: use a distinct server name, world name, save folder and backup set for each one. When forwarding ports on the host network, forward each selected port to the machine running the matching instance. Players must use the address and port belonging to the world they intend to join.

Network access and visibility
The listen IP controls which host interface accepts connections, while the port identifies the server service. A server can be configured correctly and still be unreachable from outside the host’s local network if the selected port is not forwarded through the router or firewall.
- Confirm that the server is running and listening on the configured port.
- Use a unique port for each instance.
- Forward the relevant port through the host network when remote players cannot connect.
- Check that the address and port shared with players match the instance they should join.
- Use a password or Steam group visibility when the server should be restricted.
These network changes affect access, not the generated terrain. Do not recreate a world merely because an external player cannot connect; resolve the address, port or forwarding problem first.
Saving, console use and backups
Use the server console and save controls for routine operation. Save before planned restarts, before changing configuration and before adding or removing mods. Keep backups of the entire world folder rather than relying on a single copy.
A practical backup cycle is:
- Stop or safely save the server before copying files.
- Copy the complete world folder to a separate backup location.
- Label the backup with the world name and the date.
- Retain at least one earlier backup until the newest version has been tested.
- Restore by replacing the server’s world folder with a known-good copy only while the server is stopped.
Backups are especially important after migrating a local world, changing world rules or installing mods. They let you test a change without sacrificing the original save.
Troubleshooting a new or migrated world

Self-hosting or managed hosting?
Self-hosting gives you direct control over the server files, save folders, configuration and mods, but you are responsible for the Windows machine, backups, port forwarding, maintenance and uptime. A managed service reduces the work of keeping a machine online and reachable, but you work within the provider’s controls and recurring fees.

Choose self-hosting when file-level control and hands-on administration matter most. Consider managed hosting when a 24/7 server is more important than controlling the underlying machine and network.
