Start a regular base-game campaign, then treat each local area as a small expedition: investigate nearby activities, gather materials, prepare with the tools Geralt carries, play Gwent whenever the opportunity fits, and return to the main story when you are ready. This creates an exploration-first rhythm without pretending that one quest order or character build is universally optimal.
Confirm which Witcher 3 edition you are starting
Before creating a save, check the game’s name, installed content and update status in your platform library. The current official product page calls the updated release The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered and says that Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine are included. Digital storefronts may instead display a Complete Edition label, because the base game has been replaced by that package on those stores.
CD PROJEKT RED’s 29 September 2026 announcement says Remastered is a free upgrade for owners on GOG, Steam, Epic Games Store, Battle.net, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2. The exact listing, entitlement and installation path can vary by platform, region and the version you already own, so verify the entry in your own library rather than assuming an upgrade is automatic.
| What to check | Why it matters for this playthrough |
|---|---|
| Product name in your library | You may see Remastered or Complete Edition wording instead of the original base-game name. |
| Expansion status | The updated edition includes Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine, but your platform may require a separate download or entitlement refresh. |
| Update and installation state | An owner can be entitled to the upgrade while still needing to install the current build. |
| Campaign option | Choose the regular base-game campaign for a fresh, broad introduction to the world and its optional systems. |
The official FAQ says standalone starts for the expansions remain possible. That is useful if you specifically want an expansion scenario, but it is not the right starting point for the full exploration-and-Gwent routine described here.

Use a flexible loop instead of a rigid quest order
The Continent is presented as an open world in which encounters, choices and consequences shape the experience. The official description calls it “full of delightful and dreadful encounters with complex choices and consequences.” Use that structure to make a repeatable loop, not to chase a supposedly perfect route that has not been established.
One-area expedition loop
- Choose a nearby story objective. Let the main quest establish a direction, then look at the surrounding area before leaving it.
- Survey local opportunities. Investigate side activities, people who need help and points of interest that you can reach without turning the session into a cross-map detour.
- Collect practical materials. Pick up useful components and equipment as you travel, while leaving enough inventory space for quest items and new gear.
- Prepare before a serious encounter. Review your current equipment and the consumables available to Geralt; preparation is part of the playstyle rather than a chore between missions.
- Play Gwent when it naturally appears. Treat a card game invitation as another local activity, not as a separate campaign you must complete before advancing.
- Return to the story when curiosity is satisfied. Progress the main objective, then repeat the loop in the next area.
This cadence is an editorial approach for players who want optional systems to matter. It is not a tested optimal sequence, and it does not require clearing every marker before completing a story mission.
Decide when to move on
Move on when one of three conditions is true: the nearby activities no longer interest you, your current preparation is adequate for the next objective, or the main story has created a clear reason to travel. Staying in one region until every activity is finished can turn exploration into a checklist; leaving immediately can make crafting, Gwent and local stories feel incidental. The useful middle ground is to finish the activities that fit your current route and save the rest for a later return.

Exploration works best when every stop answers a question. You might be looking for a person connected to a local problem, materials that support your next preparation step, a merchant whose stock is worth reviewing, or simply the context around a story location. The game’s official framing emphasizes encounters and choices, so allow room for discoveries that were not on your original route.
A practical travel checklist
- Identify the next story destination and the nearby activities you can reach on the way.
- Pause at settlements and merchant locations rather than passing through them without checking what is available.
- Gather materials during travel instead of scheduling a separate, repetitive collection trip every time you need something.
- Keep a mental distinction between “interesting now” and “worth remembering for later.” Not every marker needs an immediate solution.
- After a major local decision, revisit the area only when you have a clear reason; consequences can make a return feel meaningful rather than compulsory.
Because no official source establishes a single best route, record your own notes if you want continuity: the settlement you last visited, a character you agreed to help, and the materials or equipment you still want to evaluate. These notes support your preferred pace without turning the article’s routine into a prescribed walkthrough.

Build preparation into every session
The official product description says, “A witcher always comes prepared,” and identifies elixirs, blade oils and Geralt’s silver and steel swords as preparation tools. That supports a general habit: before a dangerous objective, look at what you can use and equip, then choose the tools that fit your situation. It does not establish particular recipes, ingredient lists, enemy counters or gear statistics, so this guide deliberately avoids prescribing them.
Before leaving a safe location
- Review your equipment. Check the weapons and armor you are carrying and decide whether recently acquired items deserve a closer look.
- Inspect your consumables. Note which elixirs or oils are available and whether you have the materials or finished items you intend to use.
- Open the crafting interface. Compare available options with your immediate plans; craft when it serves the next expedition rather than emptying every material at once.
- Choose a small objective. A local contract, side activity or story step gives your preparation a purpose and makes it easier to judge what was useful.
Use two swords as a planning reminder
Geralt’s silver and steel swords are presented as distinct parts of his toolkit. You do not need to memorize a long list of counters to benefit from that distinction. When an encounter looks dangerous, pause and make sure the weapon, armor and consumables you intend to rely on are actually equipped. The habit prevents a common self-inflicted problem: collecting preparation tools but entering the fight without checking them.
Do not over-craft
Early in a save, materials and equipment compete for attention. Crafting everything immediately can leave you with a crowded inventory and no clear reason for each item. A better rule is to craft for an upcoming goal, replace a meaningful weakness in your current equipment, or make use of materials that would otherwise remain idle. Keep a reserve so that a later discovery can change your plan.
Choose progression around the way you actually play
The official page describes an overhauled skill tree intended to offer flexibility and a greater impact on play style. That supports experimentation, not a universal opening build. A player who spends long sessions in combat may want upgrades that reinforce that focus; a player who alternates investigation, travel and fights can select improvements that make the overall routine feel comfortable.
A simple progression decision framework
- Identify your dominant activity. Is most of your time going into direct fights, exploring and gathering, or a balanced mixture?
- Pick an upgrade you will use immediately. An ability that remains unused because it does not match your routine is less valuable than one that changes your next several encounters.
- Reassess after a few areas. Your preference may change once Gwent, crafting and longer exploration sessions become part of the save.
- Avoid copying a build without understanding it. No exact skill order is established here, and a borrowed sequence may assume equipment, difficulty or goals different from yours.
Think of the skill tree as a way to make your chosen rhythm more satisfying. It is not a test you can fail by selecting an option that is merely different from someone else’s.

Make Gwent a recurring part of the journey
The official product page calls Gwent an iconic card game from The Witcher 3. For an exploration-focused save, use that invitation to create a repeatable rule: when you meet an eligible opponent during ordinary travel or a side activity, consider playing before moving on. This keeps Gwent connected to the world instead of postponing it until the end of the campaign.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
A manageable Gwent routine
- Play when the opportunity fits your route. Do not abandon a time-sensitive story objective solely to chase an opponent across the map.
- Keep the activity in your session notes. If you decline or postpone a game, note where you encountered it so it remains part of your personal route.
- Let your collection grow naturally. Treat cards and matches as rewards for talking to people and exploring, not as a demand to search every location immediately.
- Separate card-game goals from story urgency. A focused Gwent session is fine, but return to the main loop when you have had enough rather than forcing every available match into one sitting.
This approach intentionally avoids claims about the best early deck, card locations, opponent order or exact rules. Those details require a mechanics-specific reference and can also vary with the player’s collection and choices.
Do not confuse in-game Gwent with the tabletop product
Gwent: The Legendary Card Game is an optional physical printing of the card game. CD PROJEKT RED describes physical decks for Northern Realms, Nilfgaard, Monsters, Scoia’tael and Skellige. You do not need the tabletop product to play Gwent inside the video game, and owning the physical version does not replace the in-world activity. Consider it only if you want a separate, face-to-face card game.
Crafting and inventory habits that support exploration
A crafting-focused playthrough is less about manufacturing every possible item and more about turning travel into a steady supply of options. Since recipes, component routes and item statistics are not established here, use process rules that remain useful regardless of the exact equipment available in your edition.
Collect with a purpose
- Pick up materials encountered during normal travel, especially when doing so does not pull you far from the current objective.
- When you return to a settlement, review what you acquired before buying or crafting replacements.
- Compare newly found equipment with what you already use; an item is valuable because it improves your current plan, not merely because it is new.
- Keep quest-related objects separate in your thinking from ordinary crafting stock so that selling or dismantling decisions do not become rushed.
Use merchants as checkpoints
Merchants naturally divide an expedition into manageable stages. Before leaving, review what you can afford and what you can carry. After returning, sell or otherwise manage surplus items, then look at crafting options with the updated materials. This creates a clean loop: explore, gather, prepare, travel, return and reassess.

Balance story pacing against optional content
There are three reasonable ways to tune this playthrough. None is objectively correct; choose the one that matches the time you have and how much repetition you enjoy.
| Approach | Story pacing | Gwent frequency | Material attention | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Story-led with detours | Advance the main quest regularly and investigate only nearby activities. | Play when an opponent is already on your route. | Gather during travel and craft for immediate needs. | Players who want narrative momentum with some optional systems. |
| Regional explorer | Spend longer in each area before moving to the next story destination. | Use local matches as a reason to talk to more residents. | Review materials and equipment whenever you return to a settlement. | Players who enjoy discovering local stories and revisiting routes. |
| Systems-first wanderer | Let the main story wait while a chosen activity remains interesting. | Schedule dedicated Gwent sessions when you feel like collecting or playing. | Make crafting and inventory management a central part of each return. | Players who see the world’s optional systems as the main attraction. |
You can switch approaches between regions. A busy week may call for story-led detours, while a longer weekend session may suit a regional exploration pass. The save does not need one permanent pace.

“I am collecting materials but never crafting.”
Stop gathering for its own sake. Pick one upcoming objective, inspect the available crafting options and make only what supports that objective. If nothing is immediately useful, continue the story or exploration loop and let materials accumulate naturally.
“Gwent keeps interrupting the story.”
Define a boundary before the session: play one match when it is directly on your route, or reserve Gwent for the next settlement visit. Keeping a written note of postponed opportunities preserves the activity without forcing every encounter into the current scene.
“I am overwhelmed by side activities.”
Use the one-area rule. Choose the next story destination, investigate nearby content that interests you, and leave distant or low-priority markers for a later return. Exploration is serving the playthrough when it creates context and variety, not when it fills every remaining minute.

“My build no longer feels right.”
Reconsider the activity you actually enjoy now. The skill system is designed for flexible play styles, so adjust future choices toward the balance of combat, travel, crafting and Gwent that you are currently sustaining. Do not restart solely because your selections differ from an online template.
“I am unsure whether an expansion should come first.”
The updated edition includes both expansions, but the official material reviewed here does not establish an optimal story sequence. Continue the base-game campaign if your goal is a complete first playthrough, and choose an expansion start only when you specifically want that separate scenario.
A first-session plan
Use this checklist for the opening session of a new save:
- Confirm that the intended Remastered or Complete Edition entry is installed and that your expansion entitlements are present.
- Start the regular base-game campaign.
- Follow the opening story direction, then pause in the first suitable area to inspect nearby activities.
- Gather materials during travel and review equipment when you reach a merchant or other safe stopping point.
- Prepare with the consumables and swords available to you, without assuming a recipe or counter that has not been verified.
- Play Gwent if an encounter presents the opportunity and it fits the current route.
- Choose one progression improvement that matches how you actually spent the session.
- Advance the main story when the local loop has delivered enough exploration, crafting and Gwent for that play session.
Repeat the same decision cycle in the next area, changing the balance whenever your interest or available time changes. That is the core of a Gwent-, crafting- and exploration-focused Witcher 3 playthrough: optional systems are not errands to clear before the “real” game; they are the activities that determine how you travel through it.
