The safest way to evaluate a political post is a repeatable sequence, not a single “AI detector.” Pause before sharing, write down the exact claim, inspect who posted it and where it first appeared, reverse-search the image or video, verify the date and place with independent sources, and then check any available provenance information. Treat labels, metadata, visual glitches and automated detector scores as clues with limits. A real photograph can still be paired with a false caption, and an inaccurate post does not by itself prove that its author intended to deceive.
What you are trying to establish
Political posts often combine several separate assertions. A clip may show a real person, at a real location, while the caption gives the wrong date and the wrong explanation. Checking only whether the pixels are “real” misses the more common problem: genuine media used out of context.
Break every post into distinct questions:
- Did the depicted event happen?
- Is this the correct date and location?
- Is the person, organization or quote identified correctly?
- Has the file been edited, synthetically generated or given a misleading voiceover?
- Who first published it, and is that account connected to the event?
The European Parliament Research Service (EPRS) uses “misinformation” for inaccurate information shared without an established intent to cause harm and “disinformation” for information created or spread with the aim of fooling people. You can often show that a claim is unsupported without being able to prove the sharer’s intent.

1. Pause and name the claim
Do not let an urgent demand to “share before it is deleted” set your pace. Emotional language, outrage and fear are reasons to slow down, not proof that a post is false. The EPRS fact-checking guidance recommends noticing your emotional reaction and thinking before sharing.

Write a neutral description of what the post asks you to believe. Include the alleged actor, action, place and date. For example: “This video claims that a polling station in [a named city] stopped accepting ballots on [a date].” Separating the claim from the post’s rhetoric makes each part testable.
2. Inspect the account and source trail
Open the profile rather than relying on the display name. Check the account’s history, stated affiliations, location, posting pattern and whether its profile image or name has changed. A newly created account, copied biography or stream of reposts does not prove deception, but it lowers confidence in an unsupported claim.
Look for an original recording, a named witness, an official document or a link to a first-hand report. Trace distinctive wording, a watermark, quoted source or unusual phrase in the caption. The earliest version you can find may reveal a different caption or a date that predates the event being claimed. A post with no source trail is harder to verify, even when the media itself looks convincing.

For a still image, upload it to more than one reverse-image service when possible. The UK House of Commons Library’s “How to verify images and videos” guide, published 5 May 2026, lists TinEye, Bing and Google as examples. Results can reveal earlier publications, a photographer’s original upload or use of the same image in an unrelated event.
For video, capture several distinctive frames: a sign, face, building, vehicle or unusual moment. Search those frames individually. A verification workflow such as InVID can help extract frames and inspect a clip. Compare the earliest versions you locate, not only the most popular result.

Reverse search locates prior appearances; it does not authenticate a file by itself. A new image may have no indexed matches, and an old image may have been edited after publication. Treat a match as a lead to context, then check whether the earlier version depicts the same event.
4. Corroborate the event, date and place independently
Test the caption separately from the media. Seek several independent accounts, preferably including reliable local reporting, official records or direct statements from relevant institutions. Independence matters: ten posts copying one source are not ten confirmations.
Check visible details against the claimed geography and time:
- Read signs, election notices, road markings and language.
- Compare buildings, hills, street layouts and other landmarks with maps or satellite imagery.
- Ask whether weather, shadows, foliage and clothing fit the stated date.
- Compare the sequence with other independently posted photos or videos from the location.
- Check whether the named institution or election authority issued a contemporaneous statement.
A real clip can be old, filmed in another country or paired with an inaccurate voiceover. Describe the specific problem you can support—“old footage presented as today’s event” or “location not supported”—rather than using “fake” as a blanket label.
5. Treat visual and audio artifacts as leads, not verdicts
Inspect faces, hands, text, reflections, shadows and edges for inconsistencies. Abrupt cuts, repeated background patterns, lip movements that do not fit speech, mismatched room acoustics or an audio track that begins unnaturally can justify further checking. Compression, low light, camera motion and ordinary editing can create similar effects.

Manipulation methods change quickly, and a polished synthetic clip may contain no obvious glitch. Conversely, a genuine file can look strange after platform recompression. A clean-looking image is not proof of authenticity, and one distorted finger is not proof of generation by an AI system.

C2PA Content Credentials are a technical standard for recording information about a file’s origin and editing history. When credentials remain attached and readable, they can show whether a file began as a camera original and which tools made subsequent changes. The Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity publishes the specification, whose versions evolve.
Google says its Gemini app can check C2PA Content Credentials and describe whether a file is an unaltered camera original or modified, and by what tools. That feature was described on Google’s public page checked 13 October 2026; availability and supported file types may change.
Provenance answers a history question, not a political-truth question. Credentials may show that an image was edited, but an edited image can still accurately depict an event. They also cannot prove that the attached caption, date, speaker or allegation is true. The absence of credentials does not prove that a file is fabricated: many platforms strip metadata and many cameras or export tools never add credentials.
7. Decide how to share, qualify or report
If evidence is incomplete, state what is established and what remains uncertain. You can write, “The video appears to have been online before the claimed event; the location is not confirmed,” instead of repeating the claim as fact. Do not add a confident motive—such as “they are trying to deceive voters”—unless reliable evidence establishes intent.

If the post violates the service’s rules, use that service’s reporting flow and preserve the post URL or a screenshot for your own records. Rules and menus differ by platform and country. Google’s election guidance describes YouTube restrictions on certain voter-suppression claims and false claims about candidate eligibility; that example is not a universal standard for every service.
For voting dates, polling places, registration, eligibility or ballot procedures, consult the relevant election authority directly. A viral post is not an election notice.
What each verification method can and cannot answer

How to answer common post types
“Is this political video real?”
- Pause the clip and record the exact spoken and written claims.
- Capture several frames containing distinctive visual details.
- Search those frames and the transcript or caption for earlier appearances.
- Compare the earliest versions for cuts, captions, language tracks and dates.
- Check the speaker’s identity and whether the setting matches the claimed event.
- Seek independent reporting or an official statement about the event.
- Use provenance information, if present, only to describe file history.
A video may be genuine but selectively edited. If a 30-second extract omits the sentence that changes the meaning, the problem is context rather than a wholly synthetic recording.
“Is this image old or out of context?”
Reverse-search the full image and a crop containing the most distinctive feature. Open earlier results and note their publication dates, captions and locations. Check whether the apparent age comes from the original event or from a later repost. Then compare signs, architecture, weather and clothing with the location named in the current post. Report the supported defect precisely: “2019 protest photo reused to describe a 2026 demonstration,” for example.
“Does this voice note or speech recording prove what was said?”
Find a transcript or contemporaneous recording from an independent source. Listen for edits, repeated room tone, abrupt changes in background noise and a mismatch between mouth movement and sound when video is available. A familiar voice is not sufficient identification; synthetic voice systems can imitate public figures, and genuine recordings can be spliced or translated inaccurately.

“A platform labels this as AI-generated. Is the entire claim false?”
No. A label may identify synthetic or altered media, but the underlying allegation could still refer to a real event. Read the label’s scope and the service’s current policy. Verify the event and caption independently rather than treating the label as a complete explanation.
Common mistakes that produce bad fact-checks
- Relying on one detector: Scores are not universal authenticity certificates and can change as models and compression change.
- Equating missing metadata with fabrication: Social platforms routinely strip file information.
- Assuming a watermark identifies the original: Watermarks can be cropped, copied or added to a repost.
- Calling every misleading post “fake”: Distinguish fabricated media from real media with a false date, place or caption.
- Counting reposts as corroboration: Repetition can reflect one unverified source.
- Inferring intent from error: An incorrect share does not establish that the person meant to deceive.
- Using a current rule as a universal rule: Reporting options, disclosure requirements and election policies are service- and jurisdiction-specific.
- Sharing a correction with the false claim more prominently than the evidence: Quote only the necessary wording and link readers to the verified context when possible.
How to communicate uncertainty responsibly
Use calibrated language tied to evidence:
- Supported: “The city’s election authority posted the same closure notice on its official site, and two independent local outlets reported it.”
- Unconfirmed: “The account provides no original source, and no independent report has verified the alleged event.”
- Contradicted: “Reverse-search results place this image at a 2022 rally, not the event named in the post.”
- File history only: “The credential record indicates an edit in a named tool; it does not establish whether the caption is true.”
Explain what would change your assessment: an original upload, a statement from the relevant authority, a location match or an earlier dated version. This is more useful than claiming certainty that the available evidence cannot support.
Why the stakes are high, without overstating the numbers
UNESCO reported in 2023 that 85% of surveyed citizens were worried about online disinformation’s impact. The figure came from an IPSOS poll of more than 8,000 respondents across 16 countries where elections were due in 2024. It measures reported concern, not the prevalence of false posts.

In the same survey, 87% said misinformation had already had a major impact on their country’s political life, and 88% wanted governments and regulators to address the problem quickly by regulating social media. Those are respondents’ views, not an independently measured causal effect on an election or proof that a particular regulatory approach works.
UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay said on 6 November 2023: “Digital technology has enabled immense progress on freedom of speech. But social media platforms have also accelerated and amplified the spread of false information and hate speech, posing major risks to societal cohesion, peace and stability.” The practical response for an individual reader is disciplined verification rather than blanket distrust of every post or every platform.
A two-minute checklist before sharing
- What exactly is the post asking me to believe?
- Who posted it, and is there a traceable original source?
- Have I searched the image or several video frames for earlier appearances?
- Do the date, place, signs, landmarks and weather fit?
- What do independent local, official or first-hand sources say?
- Am I treating a detector score, metadata field or label as more conclusive than it is?
- Can I describe the evidence and uncertainty without asserting an unproven motive?
- Does the post violate a current platform rule, and is reporting appropriate?
UNESCO’s platform-governance guidance frames responsibility as shared among platforms, governments, civil society and users while protecting freedom of expression and the right to information. For users, that responsibility starts with a pause and a source trail: verify the claim, qualify what remains unknown, and avoid turning an unverified political post into your own amplification.
