Assume an unexpected breach email is unverified until you confirm it through a channel you find independently. Do not click its links, open attachments, reply with information, or call a number in the message. Instead, open the organization’s known official website or app yourself, or use a trusted phone number, and ask whether a breach occurred, whether your data was affected, and what action is actually required.

Why breach-themed phishing works

A genuine data breach creates exactly the anxiety that phishing depends on. After a company announces stolen customer data, criminals can imitate that company and send messages about “protecting” your account. The email may ask you to sign in, reset a password, confirm your identity, scan a device, claim compensation, or fix a payment problem.

The timing can be deceptive. The National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) warns that impersonation messages may arrive some time after a breach becomes public, not only on the day of the announcement. Attackers can also use details exposed in an earlier incident to make a later message feel personal.

A familiar logo, polished layout, correct name, partial address, or an apparently plausible sender does not authenticate an email. Those elements are easy to copy or obtain. The strongest evidence is independent confirmation from the organization through a route you did not get from the message.

Three questions to answer before doing anything

  1. Does the message demand sensitive or urgent action? Treat requests for a password, one-time code, payment, identity document, bank details, Social Security number, or immediate login as high risk—especially when a deadline or threat is attached.
  2. Can the claimed breach be confirmed independently? Navigate to the organization’s official site or app yourself, or call a number already saved in your records. Do not use a link, telephone number, QR code, or reply address supplied by the email.
  3. Does the organization confirm this exact action? A real breach does not make every message about the breach legitimate. Ask support whether the email was sent by them and what precise steps, if any, customers should take.

Sender appearance and writing quality are useful warning signs, but they are weaker evidence than those three answers.

Red flags in an email about a breach

Urgency, threats and artificial deadlines

“Verify within 24 hours,” “your account will be closed,” and “complete this security check now” are pressure tactics. A legitimate security team may recommend prompt action, but pressure should never prevent you from verifying the request independently. Pause rather than letting a countdown decide for you.

Requests that a legitimate service should not need by email

  • Your current password or a password you recently used.
  • A one-time authentication code, recovery code, or security-key approval.
  • Full card details, bank credentials, tax or government identifiers, or a scan of an identity document.
  • Payment to “unlock” an account, receive compensation, or prevent fraud.
  • Installation of remote-access software, a browser extension, or an attachment described as a security tool.

Even when a breach really happened, do not provide these details through an unexpected email. Use the organization’s established sign-in page or support process instead.

Impersonated sender and misleading links

Display names and logos can be forged. Inspect the complete address, including the domain after the @. A look-alike spelling, an unrelated domain, a free-mail address where the company normally uses its own domain, or a reply address that differs from the visible sender deserves scrutiny.

On a computer, hover over a link without clicking it. On a phone, press and hold only if your mail app safely reveals the destination without opening it. Look for a domain that is not the organization you expected, a misspelling, an added word, or a long address that hides the real destination. A familiar-looking address is still not proof: compromised legitimate accounts and redirect services can also be abused.

Do not open an attachment merely to inspect it. A document, archive, or “security scanner” can install malware or lead to a credential-harvesting page.

Technical jargon and unusual promises

NCSC guidance identifies technical language, password-reset claims, device scans, compensation offers, and missed-delivery notices as recurring themes. Scammers combine these stories with a breach reference to make an otherwise unrelated request seem credible. A promise of money is not evidence that you are entitled to compensation, and a claim that your device is infected is not a diagnosis.

Use the safe inspection sequence

1. Preserve the message without interacting

Leave the email open only long enough to record the sender, subject, date, and any claim you need to discuss with the organization. Do not reply, click, download, scan a QR code, or call. If your workplace has a reporting button, use that built-in function rather than forwarding the message manually unless your security team instructs otherwise.

2. Check the full sender and destination

Expand the sender details in your mail client and compare the complete address with the organization’s known domain. Examine the actual destination of every link. These checks can expose obvious inconsistencies, but they cannot certify that an email is safe; a criminal may use a compromised account or a convincing domain.

3. Find the organization yourself

Type the known web address into your browser, use a bookmarked official app, or choose a phone number from a statement, card, contract, or previous trusted correspondence. Do not search by copying the suspicious message’s link or telephone number. Search results can also contain advertisements or spoofed pages, so check the domain carefully.

  • PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts

4. Ask focused verification questions

  • Did your organization experience the breach described in the email?
  • Was my account or information included?
  • Did you send this particular notification?
  • What exact action should I take, and where should I take it?

Record the support case or representative’s instructions. If the organization cannot confirm the message, treat it as phishing and follow your local reporting process.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Follow only independently verified instructions

If the breach is confirmed, start from the official site or app and follow the security notice there. Type the address yourself rather than returning to the email. A genuine notice should not require you to bypass independent verification.

Common breach lures and the safe response

Claim in the message What the attacker wants Safe response
“Reset your password because of the breach.” A login credential, reused password, or one-time code. Open the real service yourself and change the password there. Check whether the same password was reused elsewhere.
“Confirm your identity to stop fraudulent activity.” Government identifiers, card data, account credentials, or a photo ID. Contact the organization independently and ask whether any identity check is required.
“You qualify for breach compensation.” Payment, bank details, or a fee for a nonexistent claim. Verify any compensation program through the organization’s official site and never pay to receive it.
“Run this security scan” or “download the attached report.” Malware installation or remote access. Do not open it. Use security software you already trust and obtain updates from its official source.
“Your delivery was missed because your details were exposed.” Card payment, address data, or a malicious app installation. Check the delivery directly in the carrier’s official app or site.

What to do if you clicked, replied or entered information

You entered a password

Change it immediately by visiting the authentic service yourself. Change it anywhere else you reused it. Use a unique password for every account, and do not use a password shown in the suspicious email.

Then review recent sign-ins, devices, recovery addresses, forwarding rules, security settings, and sent messages. Remove unfamiliar sessions, revoke unknown application access, and enable multifactor authentication. If the service supports a hardware security key, it can provide an additional factor; compatibility depends on the account, and a key does not detect phishing by itself.

You disclosed financial or identity information

Contact the affected bank, card issuer, or service through a trusted number and explain exactly what you disclosed. Ask whether the account should be frozen, replaced, or monitored. In the United States, the Federal Trade Commission directs consumers to IdentityTheft.gov for a tailored recovery plan after exposure of Social Security, financial, or other sensitive identity information.

Watch statements, credit activity, account alerts, and unexpected verification messages. Keep copies of the email, headers if available, and your communications with the organization; they can help investigators and support staff.

An attachment installed software or you suspect malware

Disconnect the affected device from networks if doing so will not destroy evidence needed by your employer or incident team. Use a separate trusted device to change passwords. Update your security software and run a scan, as FTC consumer guidance recommends. For a work device, notify your IT or security team immediately and follow its containment instructions.

You only clicked the link

Close the page without entering information or approving prompts. A click alone does not prove that an account was compromised, but it can expose you to malicious downloads or browser exploits. Update the operating system, browser, and security software, then monitor the account associated with the message. If a download occurred, treat it as a possible malware incident rather than assuming that closing the tab solved it.

Change passwords intelligently after a breach

If the email contains a password you used before, do not panic. The practical question is whether that password is still active or was reused. Change the still-used password on the real service and every other account sharing it. Prioritize email accounts, password-manager accounts, banking, cloud storage, and social accounts because control of one can enable resets elsewhere.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A password manager can help generate and store unique credentials and, as NCSC notes, some tools can check whether credentials appear in publicly known breach data. Such a check is not proof that an account was unaffected and cannot identify every breach. Turn on account alerts and multifactor authentication where available, and save recovery codes offline in a secure place.

How to tell a legitimate breach notice from a phishing lure

Evidence What it tells you How much to trust it
Company logo, branding, correct name, or a familiar writing style The sender copied recognizable material or may know basic details. Weak evidence; easy to imitate.
Message says a real breach occurred The event may be genuine, but the email may still be fraudulent. Useful context only; confirm through the company independently.
Sender address and link appear to match The message passes a basic consistency check. Not authentication; compromised accounts and redirects remain possible.
Independent confirmation on the official site or from trusted support The organization acknowledges the incident and the required action. Strongest available evidence.
Request matches the independently published instructions The action is consistent with the verified notice. Proceed only from the official site or app, not the email link.

There is no reliable “look” that certifies a message. Verification is a process, not a visual judgment.

Report the message and choose the right route

United Kingdom

Forward suspicious emails to the NCSC Suspicious Email Reporting Service at report@phishing.gov.uk. NCSC analyzes reported messages and linked websites. Use your employer’s reporting procedure as well when the message reached a work account.

United States

FTC consumer guidance says to forward phishing emails to reportphishing@apwg.org and report scams at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. Phishing texts can be forwarded to SPAM (7726). If identity information was exposed, use IdentityTheft.gov for recovery steps.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Other countries and workplaces

Use your national cybercrime or consumer-protection reporting service and follow your organization’s incident-response process. Do not send sensitive evidence to an unverified address. If a bank, employer, school, or government agency is impersonated, report it through that institution’s independently located abuse or fraud channel as well.

A two-minute decision checklist

  • Stop: no clicking, replying, attachment opening, QR scanning, or calling the supplied number.
  • Classify the request: password, code, payment, identity data, download, or urgent deadline means high risk.
  • Inspect the full sender address and link destination without opening them.
  • Open the organization’s known official site or app yourself.
  • Ask whether the breach occurred, whether you were affected, and what exact action is required.
  • If affected, change reused passwords on the real service, review account activity, and enable multifactor authentication.
  • If you disclosed information or installed software, start the relevant financial, identity-theft, malware, or workplace recovery process immediately.
  • Report the message using the channel for your country and your workplace.

What the available statistics do—and do not—show

The FTC reported that email was the top method scammers used to contact people in 2024 in guidance published in 2025. That is a broad scam-contact statistic, not a measurement of how often criminals use data-breach themes in phishing. No reliable figure establishes a breach-specific phishing rate, so the safest response should be based on the message’s requested action and independent verification rather than an assumed prevalence.

Why independent verification is the decisive test

Attackers can copy a breach announcement, know a detail about you, register a look-alike domain, or compromise a legitimate mailbox. They cannot control the official support route you reach independently. Treat the email as an untrusted lead, confirm the incident and your status through that separate route, and complete any required action only in the verified service. That approach remains safe whether the breach claim is true, exaggerated, or entirely invented.
