A travel message can include your real name, dates, confirmation number and price and still be a scam. After a booking hack or reservation-data exposure, do not click the message’s link, call its number or pay its alleged fee. Open the airline, hotel or booking platform’s official app or website yourself, check the reservation and refund status, then contact the provider through a phone number or chat channel you obtained independently.
Why a convincing travel message may still be fraudulent
Booking breaches and exposed reservation records give criminals enough context to make a message look authentic. A scammer may know the property, flight dates, passenger name, confirmation code, room type or amount charged. Those details prove only that the sender has information about your booking; they do not prove that the sender controls the airline, hotel or booking platform.
The FTC describes phishing as an email that appears to come from a well-known source and seeks identifying information that can be used to invade accounts or open new ones. In travel scams, the familiar source may be an airline, hotel or reservation service. The message is designed to make you act before you independently check what happened.
Treat an unexpected cancellation, payment-failure or refund notice as untrusted until the same event appears in the account you reach independently. A genuine operational problem can wait while you verify it; a criminal’s payment request is built around preventing that pause.

The warning signs that matter most
Urgency tied to a short deadline
“Pay within two hours,” “your room will be released today,” and “your refund expires at midnight” are pressure tactics. A real provider may set cancellation deadlines in its published terms, but the notice should still be verifiable in your account and through an independently sourced support channel. A countdown in an email or text is not evidence that the deadline is real.
A look-alike sender or website
Scammers copy logos, colors, reservation language and signatures. The display name may show a familiar airline or hotel while the actual sending domain is unrelated, misspelled or padded with extra words. A search result can also be an advertisement that leads to an impostor support page. Do not use the message’s link or a paid-search result to decide whether the message is genuine.
Check the complete sender address, the address shown when you hover over a link, and the destination domain before opening anything. A secure-looking padlock or an address beginning with HTTPS only encrypts the connection; it does not establish that the site belongs to the travel company.

Requests for passwords, codes or complete payment details
Unexpected requests for an account password, one-time sign-in code, full card number, card security code, government ID or a selfie are high-risk. An attacker who obtains an email password can reset other accounts, intercept future travel notices and change recovery details. Never send a one-time code to someone who contacted you; the code is intended for the login or transaction you initiated yourself.

Payment methods that are hard to reverse
A demand for a wire transfer, gift card, cryptocurrency or payment-app-only transfer is a strong scam indicator. The FTC warns that these methods are difficult to recover once the recipient receives the money. A legitimate airline, hotel or booking service should be able to explain the charge in an account record and offer a payment route covered by its normal policy, not insist on an unusual method to “unlock” a refund or preserve a reservation.
A refund story you cannot verify
Be suspicious when the sender cannot provide a policy, transaction record or case number that the provider confirms independently. A real refund has a traceable source payment, an explanation of the cancellation and terms describing when and how the money will be returned. “Pay a small processing fee first” is not proof that a refund exists; it is a common way to turn a supposed incoming payment into an immediate loss.
Use this verification workflow before taking any action
- Stop interacting with the message. Do not click, reply, download an attachment or call a number displayed in the email, text, social-media message or voicemail. Do not forward it to a travel contact while preserving active links; save the original instead.
- Reach the provider independently. Type the airline, hotel or booking platform’s known web address yourself, use its official mobile app, or open a booking confirmation you already trusted. Do not start from the suspicious message or from an advertisement.
- Check the reservation record. Look for the booking, payment status, cancellation notice, itinerary changes and any refund case in the account. If the alleged event is absent, treat the message as fraudulent until support confirms otherwise.
- Use an independent support route. Call a number listed on the provider’s official website, on a booking confirmation you had before the suspicious contact, or on your payment-card statement. Ask whether the provider sent the notice, whether the reservation is actually at risk and whether any amount is due.
- Confirm the payment destination and terms. Before authorizing anything, ask for the exact policy, transaction record, currency, amount, timing and destination. A real representative should not object to you ending the conversation and calling back through the published number.
- Preserve evidence. Save the original email, complete headers, message screenshots, sender address, link URL, phone number, booking record, receipts and chat logs. Note the exact time, payment destination and any account changes; these details help the provider, bank and investigators trace the incident.
If the official account shows a genuine cancellation or refund, follow the instructions displayed there rather than those in the unsolicited message. If the account is unavailable, ask support to verify ownership using a process you started from the provider’s known channel.
Common fake-refund scripts and the safe response

These stories work because they combine a real booking with a short deadline. The presence of accurate reservation details does not change the response: verify first, and never pay merely to stop a threat delivered through an untrusted channel.

A message delivered through a real application is not automatically safe. If a property’s account or an agent’s mailbox has been compromised, the scam can appear in a legitimate conversation. The payment history and the provider’s normal support process are stronger evidence than the channel alone.
What to do if you clicked, replied or entered information
If you clicked a link but did not submit anything
Close the page, do not download files or install software, and avoid returning to it. Update the device and browser, run the security checks available on your device, and watch for unexpected sign-in prompts or new messages. If the page requested a login and you entered one, treat that credential as exposed even if the page displayed an error.
If you entered a password or one-time code
- Change the exposed password immediately from the real service, beginning with your email account because it can receive password-reset messages.
- Use a unique password for each account and enable multifactor authentication where available.
- Sign out other sessions and review recovery email addresses, phone numbers, authenticator devices and recent sign-ins. Remove anything you do not recognize.
- Change the same password anywhere else it was reused, using the legitimate sites rather than links in the message.
- Tell the airline, hotel or booking platform that the account or reservation may be compromised and ask whether contact details, payment methods or itinerary data were changed.
Changing a password does not undo a code that was already used. Ask the provider to invalidate active sessions, reset recovery methods and place additional verification on the reservation if its procedures allow it.
If you entered card or bank information
Call the card issuer or bank using the number on the card or statement. Explain that the information was submitted to a phishing site, ask whether the account or card should be blocked or replaced, and review recent and pending transactions. Continue monitoring for small test charges as well as large ones. Do not wait for the suspicious charge to settle before notifying the provider.

If you paid the scammer
Contact the card issuer, bank, payment app or wire service immediately and ask whether the transfer can be reversed and the money refunded. Provide the recipient details, amount, timestamp, confirmation number and preserved messages. A fast request may allow a hold or recall, but no payment method guarantees recovery.
For gift cards, contact the gift-card company through its official support channel, keep the card and receipt, and report that the value was obtained through fraud. For cryptocurrency, contact the exchange or wallet service that processed the transaction and provide the transaction identifier; blockchain transfers generally cannot be reversed by the recipient’s bank. Do not pay a second “recovery agent” who promises to retrieve the first payment.

Keep the original files rather than only screenshots. Record the sender’s complete address, reply-to address if different, full headers, every domain and phone number, the booking reference, payment destination, exact time zone and any changes made to your account. Preserve bank notices, receipts and support-ticket numbers.
Notify the real airline, hotel or booking platform so it can protect the reservation and warn other affected customers. Report phishing and financial loss to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. Also notify your bank or card issuer and the relevant local law-enforcement or national cybercrime channel. If an account was taken over, ask the provider to record the compromise and tell you which recovery steps it completed.

When speaking with investigators or a payment provider, distinguish what you observed from what the sender claimed. For example, state that the official account showed no cancellation, while the message alleged one. This separation helps the recipient identify which records need verification.
How to tell a real refund from a fake one
The refund is tied to the original transaction
A legitimate refund should identify the reservation or transaction in the provider’s own records and explain why the money is being returned. It normally goes back through the original payment route or a documented alternative described by the provider. Ask for the refund amount, currency, processing date and reference number, then confirm those details through the account or an independently initiated support conversation.
No advance payment is required to receive your own money
A request to pay a tax, release fee, verification charge or rebooking deposit before a refund is issued changes the direction of money: you are sending funds to the person who claims to owe you. Stop and verify the case. Do not let a small requested amount make the transaction seem safe; the fee may be a test before a larger demand.

Open the booking and read the cancellation and refund terms from the provider’s site or app. A policy can explain nonrefundable fares, deadlines or partial credits, but it cannot authenticate a link supplied by an unknown sender. If the message conflicts with the policy, ask the provider which record controls the reservation.
Protect the booking and accounts after a data exposure
- Change the travel account password and any reused password, starting with email.
- Enable multifactor authentication and verify that recovery details belong to you.
- Review saved cards, payout accounts, traveler profiles, loyalty balances and contact information for unauthorized changes.
- Check whether other travelers on the reservation received suspicious contacts and warn them through a trusted channel.
- Ask the provider whether the confirmation code can be replaced, the reservation notes can be flagged, or an account PIN can be added.
- Monitor statements and account alerts for several billing cycles, because criminals may use the exposed information later.
Do not publish your confirmation number, complete itinerary or identity documents while asking strangers for help online. Give those details only to the provider, financial institution or investigator using a verified channel.
A quick decision guide
- The message asks for a code, password or full card number: stop, close it and verify through the official account.
- The message demands a wire, gift card, cryptocurrency or payment-app transfer: assume fraud until the provider proves otherwise; do not pay.
- The official account shows no matching cancellation or refund: preserve the message and report it.
- The official account shows a matching event: contact support independently and follow the policy displayed there.
- You already submitted credentials: change passwords, end other sessions and secure recovery methods immediately.
- You already sent money: call the payment provider at once and request reversal, then report the loss.
The central test is independence: can you confirm the reservation event, the refund terms and the payment destination without using anything supplied by the suspicious contact? If not, pause. A real booking problem can be handled through the provider’s own systems; a fake refund depends on you bypassing them.
