Before you share a statistic, trace it to the original source, identify exactly who and what was measured, check the denominator and comparison, look for uncertainty, test whether the evidence is merely correlational, and inspect the chart’s scale. A number can be technically correct yet still mislead when its population, time period, exclusions, limitations or alternatives are hidden.

The Office for Statistics Regulation (OSR) defines misuse as “using, presenting or repeating statistics in a way that could mislead people, whether or not this is intentional.” Its related definition of misinterpretation covers readings that do not reflect what data can reliably show because definitions, context, uncertainty or limitations were missed or left unclear. The checklist below turns those principles into a repeatable test for news stories, posts, videos and infographics.

Start with an eight-question test

Do not decide whether a number is trustworthy from its size, precision or the reputation of the account that posted it. Ask these questions in order:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Where is the original source? Find the study, survey, administrative table or agency release rather than relying on a screenshot or summary.
  2. Who was measured? Identify the target population, the actual sample, exclusions, recruitment method and nonresponse.
  3. What is the denominator? Write the numerator and denominator, then check the units, comparison group, geography, age range and time window.
  4. How uncertain is the result? Look for confidence intervals, margins of error, missing-data treatment, revisions, measurement error and model assumptions.
  5. Is this association or causation? A correlation shows that variables move together; it does not by itself show that one caused the other.
  6. Does the visual preserve scale? Inspect the baseline, axis limits, intervals, omitted categories, time range and any three-dimensional effects.
  7. Was the result selected? Look for the full dataset, preregistration or methods, null results, alternative measures and the complete time series.
  8. Is the wording no stronger than the evidence? Replace “proves” or “causes” with a narrower description when the design supports only an association.

If a claim fails one check, pause before sharing. If it fails several, treat it as unverified until the missing context is found.

What “misleading” means in practice

A misleading statistic is not necessarily fabricated. The underlying calculation may be accurate while the presentation invites a conclusion the data cannot support. Common examples include a real percentage from a self-selected poll presented as a population estimate, a relative increase that hides a small absolute change, a chart with a truncated axis, or one favorable outcome reported while other outcomes are omitted.

OSR’s distinction is useful: misuse concerns how statistics are used, presented or repeated; misinterpretation concerns understanding them beyond what the data reliably show. Intent is not required for either problem. A well-meaning post can mislead if it strips away the definitions, uncertainty or limitations needed to read the result correctly.

Step 1: Trace the number to its original source

Move past the screenshot

Search the wording of the claim and the distinctive number, but use search results only to locate the underlying publication. An influencer caption, news summary or image may have rounded the value, changed the population or dropped a footnote. Open the study, survey report, administrative table or agency release itself.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Record the source details

Write down the publisher, publication date, data-collection dates, table or figure number, definitions and methods. A release dated in one month may describe data collected much earlier. That matters when a post presents an old estimate as current.

Statistics Canada advises checking whether a report’s original source can be identified, along with its response rate and representativeness. If you cannot identify a source that explains how the number was produced, label the claim unverified rather than filling the gap with assumptions.

Check whether the quoted number is the reported measure

Compare the post with the source’s exact wording. “Share of respondents,” “share of adults,” “rate per 100,000 people” and “percentage of eligible cases” are different measures. Confirm whether the post converted a count into a percentage, combined categories or rounded a confidence interval away.

Step 2: Define the population and sample

Separate the target population from the people observed

The population is the group a claim describes; the sample is the group actually measured. A survey of people who chose to answer an online poll is not automatically representative of all residents, even if the response count looks large.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ask:

  • Who was eligible, and who was excluded?
  • How were participants recruited or records selected?
  • Could people without internet access, a stable address, a particular language or a listed telephone number be missing?
  • Who declined to respond, and did response rates differ across groups?
  • Were weights, quotas or adjustments used, and are their assumptions explained?

Recognize self-selection and coverage gaps

Self-selected polls attract people with stronger opinions or more time to respond. A result from that group can describe the respondents without estimating the broader population. Coverage gaps create a similar problem when an entire segment cannot enter the sampling frame.

Check representativeness, not just sample size

A large sample reduces random sampling variation only when the sampling process supports the target population. It cannot automatically correct systematic nonresponse, missing coverage or biased recruitment. Look for a description of the sampling frame, response rate and adjustments before treating a percentage as population-wide.

Step 3: Check the denominator and comparison

Rewrite percentages as counts or rates

Whenever possible, express the claim as a numerator divided by a denominator. “Twenty percent” is incomplete without knowing twenty out of how many, in which group and during which period. A rate may use a population base, person-years, eligible cases or another exposure; those choices change the interpretation.

Do not confuse percentage points with percent change

A move from 10% to 15% is a 5-percentage-point increase but a 50% relative increase from the original level. Both calculations are mathematically valid; they answer different questions. A headline that says “up 50%” should also state the starting and ending percentages so readers can see the absolute change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Measure Illustrative calculation What it tells you
Percentage-point change 15% − 10% = 5 percentage points The direct difference between two proportions
Relative percent change (15% − 10%) ÷ 10% = 50% The increase measured against the original proportion
Risk or event count 15 events per 100 people versus 10 per 100 The absolute frequency needed to judge practical size

This is an illustration of the arithmetic, not a real-world estimate. In an actual claim, verify both counts or rates and the population used for each denominator.

Make comparisons like with like

Check that the two values use the same units, age groups, geographic areas, eligibility rules and time windows. A national annual rate cannot be fairly compared with a city’s monthly count. A percentage of all respondents cannot be compared with a percentage of only those who answered a follow-up question.

OSR warns that unsupported claims, omitted context and non-comparable comparisons can mislead. If a post changes the denominator between the first and second value, recalculate both from the original tables before accepting the trend.

Step 4: Look for uncertainty and data-quality limits

Find intervals and margins of error

A sample estimate is not an exact measurement of the whole population. A confidence interval or margin of error shows how much sampling variation is compatible with the method and assumptions. Two estimates may appear different while their intervals overlap substantially; the visual gap alone does not establish a meaningful difference.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Read the definition attached to the interval. A confidence interval is not a guarantee that a particular percentage of future observations will fall inside it, and it does not automatically include every source of bias. It generally describes sampling uncertainty under the stated design.

Check non-sampling error

Ask how the data were collected and processed:

  • Were questions ambiguous, leading or changed between waves?
  • Could respondents misremember, misunderstand or deliberately misreport?
  • How were missing answers coded or imputed?
  • Were records duplicated, revised or reclassified?
  • Does a model rely on assumptions about unobserved cases or future behavior?

U.S. Census reporting standards call for source statements that include source-data dates and disclosure of sampling and nonsampling error. OSR likewise recommends making uncertainty, bias, limitations and revisions visible. A polished decimal value does not remove these limitations.

Check revisions and release status

Official series can be revised when late records arrive, definitions change or seasonal adjustments are updated. Determine whether a post quotes a preliminary estimate, a revised figure or a final release. Do not compare versions as if they were independent observations.

Step 5: Separate association from causation

What correlation can and cannot show

Correlation means that two variables vary together. It does not establish that one produced the other. A third factor may influence both, the direction may run the other way, or the pattern may be coincidental.

The Royal Statistical Society’s guide frames the test as “Correlation versus causation – does A really cause B?” Use that question whenever a headline turns a matched trend into a cause-and-effect claim.

Check the causal requirements

  • Temporal order: Did the proposed cause occur before the outcome?
  • Randomisation: Were people or units assigned by chance, reducing systematic differences?
  • Confounders: Could another variable explain both movements?
  • Alternative explanations: Could policy, seasonality, selection or measurement changes account for the pattern?
  • Design and analysis: Does the study explain how causal effects were identified rather than merely modeled?

Observational data can provide important evidence, but its conclusions need wording that matches the design. “Associated with,” “linked to” or “moved alongside” may be accurate where “caused” is not.

Beware persuasive line charts

UK government guidance notes that a graph can make matched lines look causal even when they are only associated. A shared upward slope is a starting point for investigation, not proof of a mechanism. Look for the study’s comparison strategy and discussion of confounding before accepting a causal headline.

Step 6: Inspect the chart’s construction

Check the baseline and axis limits

For bars that encode magnitude, a vertical axis beginning well above zero can make a small difference look dramatic. The U.S. Census Bureau’s Statistical Quality Standard E2 advises “Starting the base of the graph or figure at zero to avoid giving an inappropriate visual impression.” A truncated line-chart axis can sometimes be legitimate when clearly labeled, but readers should see the full scale or an explicit break.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Look for distorted geometry

  • Three-dimensional bars and perspective can exaggerate area and make front objects appear larger.
  • Unequal time intervals can create the illusion of a steady trend.
  • Omitted categories can hide the size of the remainder.
  • Different bar widths can imply quantities that the axis does not encode.
  • Color, ordering or selective labeling can draw attention to one favorable comparison.

UK statistical guidance warns against inappropriate axes and three-dimensional charts. If the graphic is ambiguous, find the underlying table and compare the values numerically.

Check the time window

A trend can look positive or negative depending on its start date. Ask why the series begins where it does, whether a single unusual month is included, and whether a longer complete time series changes the interpretation. Seasonal data require like-for-like periods or an explained adjustment.

Step 7: Test for selective reporting

Search for the complete record

Look for the full dataset, protocol, preregistration, methods appendix, supplementary tables and all measured outcomes. A post may highlight one favorable endpoint while leaving null or unfavorable results invisible.

The Royal Statistical Society calls this selective use “cherry-picking” and warns against oversimplification. Compare the headline outcome with the prespecified primary outcome, the other measures and the complete time series where available.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ask what is missing

  • Are there subgroups with different results?
  • Were unsuccessful replications or null results reported?
  • Did the analysis test many outcomes and highlight only one?
  • Are denominators or excluded cases absent from the graphic?
  • Does the quoted period omit earlier or later data that change the pattern?

Missing context is not proof that the claim is false. It is a reason to narrow the claim until the complete record is available.

Step 8: Rewrite the claim at the evidence’s strength

Use a precise sentence structure

A careful summary states the population, measure, period, comparison and uncertainty in one sentence. For example: “In the surveyed group, the reported proportion was higher in the later period; the estimate has the stated margin of error, and the observational design does not establish a causal effect.” Replace the bracketed details with the source’s actual definitions rather than adding assumptions.

Preserve scope and caveats

Do not turn “among respondents” into “among everyone,” “during this period” into “always,” or “associated with” into “caused.” If the source is preliminary, say so. If the estimate excludes a group, name that exclusion. A shorter, qualified sentence is more accurate than a sweeping one.

Correct a claim that is already spreading

When a misleading statistic could affect decisions, OSR recommends a clear public correction or added context. State the original claim, identify the specific error, provide the corrected denominator, definition or scale, and link readers to the original source when a genuine link is available. Do not repeat a dramatic number without immediately explaining why its original framing was incomplete.

Comparison axis Questions to ask Warning sign
Source quality and transparency Can you identify the original publisher, date, method and table? Only a screenshot, caption or unnamed “study” is provided.
Population and sampling Who was eligible, included, excluded or nonresponsive? A self-selected or narrow sample is described as the whole population.
Denominator and time window Do both values use matching units, periods, places and groups? The denominator or starting date changes between comparisons.
Absolute versus relative effect What are the underlying counts, rates or percentage points? A large relative percentage hides a small absolute difference.
Uncertainty and error Are intervals, missing data, revisions and measurement limits disclosed? Highly precise figures appear without an error statement.
Causal design Was there randomisation, temporal order and control of confounders? A correlated trend is described as proof of cause.
Completeness Are all outcomes, subgroups and periods available? One favorable result is shown while alternatives are absent.
Visual scale Are axes, baselines, intervals and categories clear? Truncation, 3D effects or omitted categories magnify a gap.

Worked reading examples

A dramatic relative increase

A headline says an outcome “rose 50%.” First find the starting and ending denominators. If the underlying proportions were 10% and 15%, the relative increase is 50%, but the absolute change is 5 percentage points. Ask whether the groups, periods and eligibility rules match. Without those details, the headline does not tell you the practical size or whether the change is statistically distinguishable from sampling variation.

An online poll presented as public opinion

Trace the poll’s recruitment page and response rate. If people opted in after seeing a post, the sample may overrepresent those motivated to answer. Check weighting and coverage, then rewrite the result as describing respondents unless the method supports a broader estimate.

Two lines that rise together

Read the chart’s time scale and locate the underlying analysis. Check whether one variable preceded the other, whether a third factor could drive both and whether the data are observational. Until those questions are answered, describe the lines as associated rather than causal.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A bar chart with a high starting axis

Read the tick labels, not the apparent bar heights. Recreate the bars from the table or mentally compare the values with a zero baseline. A narrow numerical difference can look enormous when the axis begins near the values; three-dimensional styling can intensify the effect.

A practical sharing checklist

Use this short version when time is limited:

  • Open the original source and note its publisher and date.
  • Write the numerator, denominator, population and time window.
  • Check who was excluded, who did not respond and how the sample was recruited.
  • Find the margin of error, confidence interval, revisions and missing-data notes.
  • Decide whether the evidence is observational or supports a causal claim.
  • Inspect the axis, baseline, categories, intervals and 3D effects.
  • Search for the full dataset, null results and alternative measures.
  • Share only a sentence whose strength and scope match the evidence.

If a key detail is unavailable, say exactly what is unknown. “The source and denominator are not provided, so this cannot yet be verified” is more informative than either automatic acceptance or a confident accusation of fraud.

The Bottom Line

A statistic is ready to share only after you can name its original source, population, denominator, time window, uncertainty and design—and explain what the chart leaves out. If those details do not support the headline, narrow the wording or do not share it.
