Use Rockstar’s own publishing and store pages as your source of truth. Open the official Grand Theft Auto VI video listing or official GTA VI site yourself, then compare the claim, URL, and requested action. A polished video, a large view count, a paid advertisement, or genuine game imagery does not prove that a trailer, demo, preorder, or download is real.

The highest-risk claims are “demo,” “beta,” “early access,” “play now,” and “download” offers reached through an ad, social post, comment, or alleged leak. A fake GTA VI demo campaign documented in August 2026 copied real promotional details but delivered an information stealer. Never run an alleged leak or installer to test it.

The reliable way to verify a GTA 6 claim

“GTA 6” is the common name; Rockstar uses Grand Theft Auto VI. Verification is a source-and-action test, not a visual-quality test. Work through these questions in order:

  1. Did Rockstar publish it? Navigate manually to the Rockstar GTA VI media page or the main GTA VI page. Do not begin from the link in an advertisement, comment, direct message, shortened URL, or leak post.
  2. Where does the link go? A page that claims to be official should resolve to a Rockstar domain or to the platform store reached from an official support page. A look-alike domain, a redirect chain, or a standalone installer is a warning sign.
  3. What is the claim actually offering? A trailer is something to watch. A playable build, beta, early-access copy, or “download” is software and requires a separate official release announcement.
  4. What action is the page asking for? Watching an official video is different from downloading an executable, entering a Rockstar or platform password, paying a “giveaway” fee, sending cryptocurrency, or connecting a wallet. The more sensitive the requested action, the stronger the proof you should require.

If a claim fails any of these checks, do not confirm it, share it, or download anything. An item missing from Rockstar’s current media list is unconfirmed; its absence alone does not prove that a leak is fabricated.

Use Rockstar’s current video list as the reference

Rockstar’s official video page currently lists Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look, Grand Theft Auto VI Trailer 2, and Grand Theft Auto VI Trailer 1, together with character clips and downloadable media: rockstargames.com/VI/media/videos. A supposedly official trailer, announcement, or “extended look” that cannot be found there should be treated as unconfirmed until Rockstar adds it or links to it from an official channel.

Check the page by typing the address or using a bookmark. Search results and social platforms can display copied thumbnails, sponsored placements, or accounts that resemble Rockstar. The fact that a video appears above the official result, carries an “ad” label, or has millions of views says nothing about its publisher.

What the official page can and cannot prove

  • If Rockstar lists the video and the player opens from the Rockstar page, you have strong evidence that the video release is official.
  • If the video is not listed, you have a reason to withhold confirmation, not conclusive proof that every copy is fake. Pages and announcements can change.
  • An official trailer embedded on a third-party page does not make every button or offer around it official. The surrounding page may add a malicious “download,” survey, or login prompt.

Trailer and video checks

Compare the title, date, and wording

Open the Rockstar listing and compare the exact title and presentation. Be cautious of phrases such as “leaked trailer,” “full trailer before Rockstar,” “4K remaster,” “PC version,” or “watch before it is deleted” when Rockstar has not used that wording. Scammers often copy a real title or description and add urgency around it.

Do not treat a familiar logo, game font, character model, soundtrack, or footage as authentication. Real promotional material is easy to copy, and a fabricated edit can combine genuine clips with unrelated or computer-generated scenes.

Check the destination before pressing play or download

Hover over links on a computer, or long-press them on a phone, to reveal the destination. A video player that suddenly sends you to an executable download, browser extension, “verification” survey, crypto payment, or account-login page is not behaving like a normal trailer page. Close it instead of completing the requested step.

Understand what a trailer proves

A trailer demonstrates only that you can watch a piece of media. It does not prove that the game is playable, that a particular edition exists, that a release date has changed, or that a downloadable build is genuine. Keep those claims separate when evaluating a post or article.

How to recognize a fake GTA VI advertisement

Paid distribution is not endorsement. An ad network can deliver a malicious landing page, and an attacker can buy an ad that uses real Rockstar artwork. Evaluate the destination and offer, not the fact that the post is sponsored.

Claim or page behavior What it establishes What to do
Video opens from Rockstar’s official media page Strong evidence that the listed video is an official Rockstar release Watch it from that page; ignore unrelated download prompts
“Play now,” “demo,” or “beta” button on an ad or leak page Does not establish that a playable build exists Do not download or run the file; verify an announcement independently
Standalone PC installer or archive Not an official release merely because its name and icon look authentic Do not open it; report the page and remove the download
Giveaway fee, cryptocurrency payment, or wallet connection Not a normal way to verify a Rockstar announcement Close the page and do not send funds or connect accounts
Login form reached from an ad, DM, or shortened link Could be a credential-harvesting page Navigate to the official service yourself; never reuse a password there

Rockstar Support identifies the PlayStation Store, Xbox Store, and Rockstar Store for preorders, with select retailers depending on country. Start at the official preorder details page or the console store itself. An offer for a “PC installer,” “free key,” or access in exchange for a fee is a major warning sign.

Is there an official GTA 6 demo?

Do not confuse a video reveal with playable software. In its August 2026 investigation, Malwarebytes reported that Rockstar had not announced or released a GTA VI demo. Recheck Rockstar’s live pages before repeating that status, because announcements can change.

The investigated scam copied real promotional information and added a bogus Play Now button. The downloaded executable was reported as a Vidar information stealer. It targeted browser-saved passwords, cookies, and authenticated sessions, so the danger was account theft rather than an early way to play the game. Malwarebytes’ report is at malwarebytes.com/blog/threat-intel/2026/08/fake-gta-6-extended-look-and-demo-sites-deliver-an-infostealer.

TechCrunch separately reported that stolen authenticated sessions may allow account access even when multifactor authentication is enabled: techcrunch.com/2026/08/25/that-fake-grand-theft-auto-vi-demo-is-actually-just-malware. That is why changing one password from the potentially infected computer is not a complete response.

Why file size is not a safety test

Malwarebytes reported that the particular executable it examined was 1.1 MB. That number identifies one incident sample; it is not a safe or unsafe size threshold for other files. A small file can download additional components, and a large file can still be malicious. Never execute a suspicious file to inspect it.

How to assess a GTA VI leak without amplifying it

Unauthorized footage and maps have circulated, but genuine leaks can appear in the same attention cycle as fabricated or recycled clips, cryptocurrency promotions, and malware offers. “There are real leaks” does not authenticate a particular video, screenshot, map, or download.

Separate provenance from appearance

  • Provenance: Can you trace the claim to Rockstar or an official platform announcement, rather than an anonymous repost?
  • Destination: Does the link resolve to a known official domain, or to a file host, redirector, or newly registered look-alike site?
  • Claim type: Is it a watchable clip, a screenshot, a map image, or an alleged game build? Each requires different evidence.
  • Requested action: Is the reader merely viewing information, or being asked to download software, enter credentials, pay, or connect a wallet?

Visual polish, realistic lighting, a familiar user interface, a watermark, repost count, and comments claiming “confirmed” are not forensic proof. Reverse-image or frame searches may show that material is old, edited, or taken from another game, but a search result still does not make an unverified download safe.

Do not download alleged leak files

A real unauthorized build would still be unsafe to obtain and may be illegal to redistribute. A fake build adds malware risk. The safest response is to close the page, avoid reposting the file or its URL, and rely on Rockstar’s official announcements for release information.

What Rockstar’s takedown policy means

Rockstar Games Customer Support states: Any posting of in-game footage from leaked copies of the game prior to its official release date will be taken down, regardless of how the game was obtained. The policy was last updated January 10, 2025, and appears at Rockstar’s policy on posting copyrighted material.

This is a copyright and takedown policy, not an authenticity test. Removal of a clip does not prove that it was genuine, and a clip that remains online is not thereby verified. Use the official media page and announcement channels for confirmation.

Preorders, editions, and suspicious “physical” offers

For current preorder locations, consult Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto VI Pre-Order Details, last updated June 26, 2026. It names PlayStation Store, Xbox Store, and Rockstar Store, while noting that other select retailers depend on country.

Rockstar’s platforms, editions, and versions article, last updated August 18, 2026, says the physical version contains a download code and no disc, and that code redemption is region-restricted: official platforms, editions, and versions details. A supposed “disc leak,” random physical package, or region-free code should therefore be checked against the current official listing rather than accepted from photos or marketplace claims.

These details can change by region or edition. Verify the exact store, platform, edition, and redemption region immediately before paying. Do not use an alleged leak image as proof that a retailer or preorder page is genuine.

If you ran a suspicious GTA VI file

Treat execution as a security incident, especially if the file came from a fake demo, ad, leak, or “early access” page. The documented campaign sought browser credentials and sessions, so protect accounts as well as the computer.

  1. Stop interacting with the site and file. Close the page, disconnect the affected device from the internet if practical, and do not click additional pop-ups or “cleanup” downloads.
  2. Use a separate trusted device. From a device you have not exposed to the file, open the official recovery and security pages for your email, gaming, payment, and other important accounts. Do not follow recovery links supplied by the suspicious page.
  3. Secure the most important accounts first. Change passwords using unique values, revoke active sessions and trusted devices, review recovery addresses and phone numbers, and inspect recent sign-in activity. Prioritize the email account that can reset other accounts.
  4. Protect payment and identity information. Contact your bank or payment provider if the page collected card, payment, or identity details. Watch for unauthorized transactions and account-change notices.
  5. Get reputable technical help. Preserve the file name, download URL, timestamps, and relevant alerts without reopening the executable. Have a qualified incident responder or trusted security professional examine the device and advise on containment, backup restoration, or reinstallation.
  6. Assume a single scan may not answer every question. The available reports describe credential and session theft but do not establish one universal cleanup sequence for every operating system. Do not promise yourself that one scan or one password change has resolved the incident.

If you only viewed a video and did not download, run a file, enter credentials, pay, or install an extension, the malware scenario described above does not follow from viewing alone. Still close suspicious tabs and check that any download did not complete.

Quick decisions for common claims

What you see Best interpretation Safe next step
“Official trailer” on a channel or site not linked by Rockstar Unconfirmed, even if the footage looks genuine Find the matching item on Rockstar’s media page
“Play the GTA VI demo now” with an executable High-risk software offer; the August 2026 campaign used an infostealer Do not run it; delete the download and report the page
Leak clip with a crypto giveaway Leak claim and financial promotion are separate; neither validates the other Do not pay, connect a wallet, or download files
Marketplace listing for a disc or region-free code Conflicts with the currently stated physical-edition details unless Rockstar’s listing changes Check the current official editions and region rules before purchase
“Trailer removed, download mirror inside” Urgency tactic; removal is not proof of authenticity Do not use the mirror; check Rockstar’s official pages instead

Where to verify GTA VI information

Recheck these live pages immediately before sharing a claim. Release announcements, store listings, editions, and scam campaigns can change; a current official source is more reliable than a recycled screenshot or viral post.
