Do not trust a grocery delivery or store-outage message until you verify it outside the message. Do not click its link, call its supplied number, reply with personal details, or sign in from the alert. Open the retailer or delivery service’s app yourself, or type a website address you already know into your browser, then check the order or service status there.
If the message still does not make sense, contact the business through support details you found independently. A familiar logo, sender name, or urgent explanation can be copied or spoofed, so the message’s appearance is not authentication.
The safest response in one minute
- Pause. Do not tap links, call numbers, open attachments, or reply.
- Open the grocery retailer or delivery service’s official app from your device, or type its known web address manually.
- Check the order, payment, delivery, or service-status information inside that independently reached channel.
- If the claim is not confirmed, find customer support on the genuine app or website and contact it there.
- Do not provide a password, card or bank details, personal information, or a one-time verification code to the unexpected sender.
This procedure follows Federal Trade Commission guidance for delivery-notification and business-impersonation scams. It does not assume that every unexpected message is fraudulent; it treats the message as an unverified claim until a known-good channel confirms it.
Why fake grocery messages work
Grocery orders create believable reasons for a sudden text or email. You may actually be waiting for a delivery, have a substitution to approve, or expect a payment update. A scammer only needs a plausible story to make a link feel routine.

A problem designed to trigger a click
Common wording says an order failed, a driver could not deliver, a payment must be updated, or a delivery needs to be rescheduled. The Federal Trade Commission has documented fake delivery messages that lead to look-alike sites designed to capture information. The same pattern can be applied to grocery orders even when the sender has no legitimate connection to your order.
Urgency removes your time to think
Threats such as “cancelled in 10 minutes,” “account locked,” or “last chance to avoid a fee” push you toward the supplied route. Urgency is a phishing tactic, not proof that the underlying problem is real. Verify first, even when the message claims that waiting will cause a loss.
Logos and sender names can be copied
An email identity, display name, logo, colors, and familiar wording are easy to imitate. Caller ID and a sender name shown by your messaging app are not independent proof. The destination website and the order record you reach yourself matter more than the message’s branding.

Use this verification workflow
1. Freeze the conversation
Do not answer “YES,” send a code, or ask the sender to prove who they are. A reply can confirm that your number or address is active and can invite more pressure. Take a screenshot only if you need a record for reporting; do not interact with links while doing so.
2. Identify what the message claims
Write down the alleged order number, delivery date, store, amount, and stated problem without following anything in the message. Treat these details as claims to test, not as information that authenticates the sender.

3. Reach the service independently
Launch the app from its installed icon, or type a web address you have used before. Do not use a search-ad result or a URL copied from the alert when you are trying to establish which destination is genuine. If you use a password manager, select the saved login for the service rather than entering credentials on a page opened by the message.
4. Check the order or account record
Look for the same order, status, payment issue, or delivery instruction in the account. The FTC’s December 2023 delivery-notification guidance says that if a message could concern something you ordered, you should go to the site where you bought it and look up the shipping and delivery status there. A real problem should be visible in the service’s normal account workflow, although the absence of an alert in the app does not by itself prove that a message is malicious.

If the app or website does not settle the question, open its help or contact page yourself and use the listed chat, email, or telephone details. The FTC’s July 2023 delivery-service alert advises contacting a business directly with a phone number known to be real or a website or app you found yourself. Never rely on the contact number printed in the unexpected message.
6. Stop when sensitive information is requested
A request for a password, payment-card number, bank details, identity information, or a one-time verification code is a reason to leave the message and verify through the genuine service. An unexpected caller or texter should not receive an email or account verification code, even if the message knows your name or order details.
7. Preserve evidence after you verify
Keep the sender address or telephone number, the full message, the destination address shown by your browser, timestamps, and screenshots. Do not forward a malicious link to friends as a warning; share the sender details and a description instead.

Warning signs and the safe response

These signs are indicators, not a visual test that can prove a message is fake or genuine. A legitimate service may send an unexpected notice, and a polished scam may contain none of the obvious spelling errors people associate with phishing. Independent verification is the deciding step.

When you have an order that matches
A matching order makes the story plausible but does not authenticate the text. Open the service yourself and compare the order status, delivery window, payment state, and any requested action. If the app says a substitution or reschedule is needed, complete it inside the app or the independently reached website.
When you do not have an order
Do not click to “cancel” an order you never placed. The message may be using a generic delivery story to collect credentials or payment information. Delete or report it after recording the details needed for a complaint.
When the sender asks for a verification code
Do not share the code. A code can allow someone who already has your password or other account details to complete a login or recovery attempt. If you are concerned, open the real service and review recent sign-ins, change the password through its legitimate security page, and contact support from that same channel.
When the message asks for a small “redelivery” fee
A low amount is still payment information. Do not enter card details through the alert. Check the order in the genuine service and ask support whether any charge exists and how legitimate payments are handled.

How to check a store-outage message
An outage claim can be real, but the reviewed official guidance does not establish a universal grocery-retailer outage page, policy, or alert sender. Do not assume that a particular chain always uses text, email, push notification, or a specific status page.
- Open the retailer’s official app or type its known website address.
- Look for current service information, checkout notices, delivery availability, or account messages in the normal customer area.
- Check whether your order record shows a store, fulfillment, or delivery interruption.
- Use support details published in that independently reached channel to ask whether the outage affects your location and order.
- Ignore requests in the outage message to install software, move the conversation to a different app, pay a fee, or disclose credentials.
If the app and website are unavailable, use a contact method you already know, such as a saved official number or a statement from the retailer. Do not treat a search result, social-media post, or caller-ID display as proof of identity unless you can connect it to a known-good source.

You clicked but entered nothing
Close the page and stop interacting with the message. Do not download an app or browser extension it offered. If a file downloaded, do not open it; use your device’s normal security tools to remove it and check for alerts. Then verify the order through the genuine service and report the message.
You entered a password
Go to the real service by typing its known address or opening its app and change the password there. Change it anywhere else you reused it. Use the provider’s legitimate account-security options to review sessions, recovery addresses, and recent activity. If the same password protects email, payment, or other important accounts, secure those accounts as well.
You entered card or bank information
Contact the card issuer or bank through the number on the physical card, an official statement, or its known app. Explain that the information was entered into a suspected impersonation site and ask what monitoring, replacement, or transaction-dispute steps apply. Watch account activity for unauthorized charges.

You disclosed personal information
Use IdentityTheft.gov for the Federal Trade Commission’s identity-theft recovery plan. Follow the recommendations that match the information exposed, and contact affected providers through independently verified channels.
You sent a verification code
Secure the associated account immediately through its genuine app or website, change the password, end unfamiliar sessions, and contact the provider’s security team. Tell support exactly which code was shared and when; do not send additional codes to someone who contacts you unexpectedly.
You lost money
Contact the financial institution or payment service immediately using an official channel and ask about stopping or disputing the transaction. Save the message, payment record, destination address, and correspondence for the investigation.

Reporting the message
Report suspected scams to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. Include the sender identity, the text or email, the date and time, the link or phone number shown, and whether you clicked, replied, shared information, or lost money. Reporting does not replace securing an account or contacting a bank; those actions should happen first when credentials or payment details were exposed.
What the available statistics do—and do not—show
The FTC reported $470 million in consumer losses from text-message scams in 2024 and said fake package-delivery messages were the most commonly reported type of text scam that year. Those figures cover text scams broadly. They are not a measurement of grocery-delivery scams, store-outage scams, or total real-world losses, because reported losses do not capture every incident.
Choosing between the message’s route and a known-good route

The independent route is safer because it removes the message’s control over the destination and contact details. It does not require you to recognize every scam design; it gives you a way to verify a legitimate notice without exposing yourself to the supplied link or number.
