A “70% off” badge does not prove that you are saving 70%—or saving anything. To judge an online deal, verify the product and seller, compare the same item’s recent and competing prices, inspect the final checkout total, and check delivery, returns and payment protections before you pay. The process below separates a genuine lower price from an inflated reference price, an inaccurate listing or a transaction that becomes expensive after checkout.
What makes an online discount misleading?
A discount can look impressive while offering little value when the comparison price was inflated, the listing describes a different variant, or mandatory costs appear late. A low headline price can also be attached to a third-party seller, an unreliable delivery promise or a return policy that makes a mistake costly.
Think of a deal as a complete transaction rather than a percentage:

- Seller: the legal or trading entity that will take your order and handle support, delivery and refunds.
- Price evidence: a meaningful recent price and comparable offers for the same item.
- Terms: shipping, delivery date, warranty, returns, refunds, restocking fees and return postage.
- Payment and recourse: how you can challenge the charge if the item is not delivered or is materially different.
Only after those checks should the discount percentage influence your decision.

Start with the price, not the discount badge
Compare the same product at several sellers
Search the exact product name and model or stock-keeping unit (SKU), then compare the identical variant across sellers. A headline amount is not comparable if one listing is refurbished, has fewer accessories, uses a different capacity or comes from a seller with different shipping and return terms. Record the seller, condition, final delivered cost and expected arrival date for each offer.
Search engines, marketplace search and the manufacturer’s product page can help establish the product’s normal identity. Do not assume that the first result is the original retailer: advertisements can imitate a familiar brand while sending you to a different domain.
Test the “was/now” reference price
Ask what the item actually sold for recently, not just what the listing claims it used to cost. A “was $200, now $120” message is weak evidence if the $200 price was rarely or never charged. Look for price history where available and compare current offers from multiple independent sellers.
European Union consumer guidance says a trader announcing a price reduction must indicate the lowest price it applied during at least the preceding 30 days. That is an EU requirement for covered sellers, not a universal rule. Consumer law differs by country, so do not treat the 30-day standard as a guarantee that applies to every retailer or marketplace.
Understand what the 2026 screening found
In a 2026 sweep of Black Friday and Cyber Monday promotions, the European Commission and consumer-protection authorities in 23 EU countries, Iceland and Norway screened 314 online traders. They reported that:
| Finding | What was observed | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Discount references | 30% of the 314 traders referenced discounts incorrectly. | Check the reference price instead of trusting the percentage. |
| Optional basket additions | 36% attempted to add optional items; 40% of those did not clearly request consent. | Review the cart line by line and remove extras you did not choose. |
| Price comparisons | 34% displayed price comparisons; 60% of those did not clearly explain where reference prices came from. | Look for a stated basis and date for any “regular” or “recommended” price. |
These are results from that particular screening, not an estimate of all online retailers. They show why a discount label and a “regular price” need independent checking.

Verify who is actually selling the item
Check the seller shown on the listing
Marketplaces may combine products sold by the platform, the brand or independent third-party merchants. Find the seller field near the price, fulfilment and “buy” controls. Confirm whether the seller is identified as a business or private individual and whether the marketplace explains who is responsible for delivery, returns and customer service.
EU consumer guidance says marketplaces should identify whether a seller is private or professional and provide clear information about price, shipping, delivery and consumer rights. The exact rights available to you still depend on your location and the transaction.
Investigate the seller and destination domain
- Copy the seller’s name and search it with terms such as
review,complaintandscam. - Check the spelling of the web address and the domain that opens when you click the advertisement. A familiar logo does not prove that the domain belongs to the familiar company.
- Search the exact product and price elsewhere. A large unexplained gap can indicate a different condition, a missing accessory, a counterfeit or a seller that will not fulfil orders.
- Leave the advertisement and type the retailer’s known web address yourself when possible. This avoids relying on a potentially impersonated ad or a redirect.
Search results and reviews are clues, not official authentication. Treat a seller that hides its identity, provides only a contact form, or insists on an unusual payment method as high risk.
Confirm the listing describes the item you think you are buying
Match the model and variant
Before comparing prices, capture the details that define the product:
- model number, SKU or exact edition;
- size, colour, storage capacity or other configuration;
- quantity and pack size;
- new, used, refurbished, open-box or damaged condition;
- included accessories, software, licences and packaging;
- warranty provider and length;
- seller and fulfilment method; and
- delivery location and estimated date.
Read the written description as well as the images. A photograph can show a larger bundle or a different colour than the text specifies. Product titles may use a premium model name while the specification table describes a lower-capacity version. If the model number, quantity or condition is missing, you cannot make a reliable price comparison.
Watch for substitution and scarcity pressure
Countdown clocks, “only one left” notices and rapidly changing stock messages can encourage an impulsive purchase. They do not establish that the discount is genuine. Pause and verify the seller, variant and total cost before allowing a timer to decide for you.

Read reviews as evidence, not proof
Use several sources
Ratings summarize opinions but do not authenticate a seller or product. Read reviews on more than one site when possible and check whether they discuss the exact model and variant. A five-star average can combine reviews for several generations of a product or for a different item grouped on the same page.
Look for manipulation signals
- A sudden, unusually large burst of reviews in a short period.
- Reviews that mention a different product, colour, size or seller.
- Nearly identical wording, generic praise or comments that do not describe actual use.
- Ratings that are overwhelmingly positive but provide no detail, alongside unresolved complaints about delivery or refunds.
- Review photos or specifications that conflict with the current listing.
The US Federal Trade Commission says readers cannot reliably tell a real review from a fake one simply by looking at it. Its rule guidance identifies unusually large numbers of reviews in a short time and reviews for the wrong product as warning signs. Use review patterns to decide what to investigate, not as a substitute for checking seller identity and transaction terms.
Inspect the basket and checkout total
Recalculate the real cost
Put the item in the basket and continue far enough to see every known charge before authorizing payment. Check:
Recommended Free Tools
- item price and quantity;
- shipping or delivery charges;
- taxes and duties shown for your destination;
- membership, protection or subscription fees;
- optional accessories, warranties or services;
- currency conversion or payment-processing charges; and
- the final total and billing frequency.
Compare this total—not the crossed-out price—with competing offers. Check each box and line item yourself. The 2026 EU screening found that optional additions were attempted by 36% of traders reviewed, and 40% of those traders did not clearly request consent.
Know the limits of US upfront-price guidance
The FTC permits dynamic pricing when pricing information is not misleading. The specific upfront total-price rule described in the FTC’s FAQ applies to live-event tickets and short-term lodging, not to every ordinary retail product. For those covered categories, the total price includes known mandatory charges; shipping, taxes and optional add-ons may be disclosed later only if they are disclosed before payment. Do not apply that category-specific rule as a blanket requirement for all online shopping.
Regardless of the legal category, a responsible check is the same: do not approve payment until you can see what is mandatory, what is optional, when it will be charged and whether the amount recurs.

Check shipping, delivery and returns before paying
Delivery promises
Look for an estimated delivery date, dispatch location and fulfilment party. “Ships in” is not the same as “arrives by.” An unusually low price may reflect overseas fulfilment, a long wait or a product that is not currently in stock. If the date matters, save a copy of the promised window and the order confirmation.
Returns and refunds
Read the return policy for this seller and this item, not just the marketplace’s general help page. Confirm:
- the number of days to request a return and when that period begins;
- whether the item is excluded because it is personalised, opened, digital or clearance stock;
- who pays return shipping and whether an international label is provided;
- whether a restocking fee applies;
- the condition and packaging required for a refund;
- the refund method and expected processing time; and
- which party handles a defective, counterfeit or incorrect item.
A discount that saves $20 but creates a $40 return-shipping risk may not be a bargain. Keep the listing, policy and checkout confirmation so the terms can be compared with what arrives.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose payment with a route to dispute the transaction
Where available, use a payment method that provides an ordinary dispute process and keep records of the order. The FTC says a credit card may allow a buyer to dispute a charge when an item never arrives. Protections vary by issuer, country, transaction type and how quickly you report the problem.
Be especially cautious when a seller insists on gift cards, wire transfers, payment apps or cryptocurrency. The FTC warns that these methods can make recovery difficult because they generally lack the same charge-dispute path as a credit card. A seller’s insistence is itself a reason to stop and verify the offer through an independent channel.
Never send a one-time code, card verification data or account password to someone who contacts you about an order. Use the retailer’s official account page or a number obtained independently to resolve payment questions.

A practical five-minute deal check
- Freeze the impulse: open a new tab or note and record the exact product name, model and variant.
- Identify the seller: confirm whether it is the brand, marketplace or a third party; note the destination domain.
- Compare: search the same model at several sellers and compare condition, accessories, delivery and returns, not just the headline amount.
- Test the reference price: ask whether the “was” price reflects a meaningful recent price. In the EU, look for the lowest price used in the preceding 30 days; elsewhere, check the applicable local rule.
- Audit the basket: remove optional items, inspect shipping and taxes, and verify whether any fee or subscription recurs.
- Read the remedy: confirm return postage, restocking fees, refund timing and the process for a missing or incorrect item.
- Pay defensibly: choose a payment method with dispute protections where available and save the confirmation.
How to compare two listings fairly
| Comparison axis | Questions to answer | Why it changes the deal |
|---|---|---|
| Exact item | Is the model, variant, quantity and condition identical? | A lower price may simply be a smaller, older or used version. |
| Seller | Who accepts the order and provides support? | Seller identity affects authenticity, warranty and returns. |
| Final price | What is the total after mandatory shipping, taxes and fees? | The advertised amount may omit unavoidable costs. |
| Delivery | When will it dispatch and arrive, and from where? | A cheap item is less useful if it misses your deadline. |
| Returns | What is the deadline, who pays postage and is there a restocking fee? | Terms determine the cost of correcting a bad purchase. |
| Discount evidence | What recent price supports the claimed reduction? | An unexplained anchor can make a large percentage meaningless. |
Warning signs that should end the purchase
- The seller’s identity, location or customer-service route is unclear.
- The domain in the ad differs subtly from the retailer’s known domain.
- The exact model or condition is missing, contradictory or changed at checkout.
- The discount is far below every comparable offer with no credible explanation.
- Reviews appear in a sudden burst or clearly describe another item.
- Optional products or subscriptions are preselected.
- Shipping, returns or refund terms cannot be viewed before payment.
- The seller demands a gift card, wire transfer, cryptocurrency or another method with limited dispute protection.
- The checkout total changes without a clear explanation.
One warning sign may have an innocent explanation; several together justify leaving the transaction and finding the item through a known retailer or another established seller.
If you already paid and something is wrong
Document the transaction
Save screenshots or PDFs of the listing, seller page, advertised price, checkout total, delivery promise, return policy, order number and correspondence. Note dates and the amount charged. Do not rely on the listing remaining online.
Contact the seller through an independent route
Use the marketplace account or the retailer’s known website rather than a link in a suspicious message. State the problem, the remedy you want and a reasonable response deadline. Keep the communication factual.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Escalate through the payment provider
If the item never arrives, is materially different or a refund is not provided, ask your card issuer or payment provider about its dispute process and deadlines. Provide the records you saved. The available remedy depends on the payment method and local law; do not assume that every transfer can be reversed.
Report impersonation or fraud
Report a deceptive listing to the marketplace and the relevant consumer-protection or fraud-reporting authority in your country. If you entered a password on a suspicious site, change it on the real service and enable multi-factor authentication.
What the law can—and cannot—tell you
Rules differ by jurisdiction, product category and seller status. The EU 30-day lowest-price requirement concerns price-reduction announcements by covered sellers in the EU; it is not a global standard. The FTC’s cited upfront total-price rule concerns live-event tickets and short-term lodging, not ordinary retail goods generally. Payment disputes, cooling-off periods, marketplace duties and warranty rights also vary.
Use regulator guidance for your location and the terms shown for the specific transaction. Legal compliance does not automatically make a listing good value, and a large discount is not proof that a seller is trustworthy.

Bottom line: judge the whole transaction
A credible online deal has a verifiable seller, an identifiable product, a price that makes sense against recent and competing offers, a visible all-in total, realistic delivery and workable return terms. Treat the percentage as one clue. If you cannot establish who is selling, what exact item will arrive, what you will pay or how you can recover your money, the safest discount is the one you do not accept.
