Is this election video real, or has it been edited or generated? You usually cannot answer that from appearance alone. The reliable approach is to verify the claim’s source, date, location, completeness and surrounding context, then check trusted reporting and the relevant state or local election office. Treat visual or audio glitches and detector scores as reasons to investigate—not as proof that media is authentic or fake.
What counts as a deepfake or manipulated election media?
A deepfake is media generated or altered with artificial-intelligence techniques so that a person appears to say or do something they did not. Election misinformation also uses much simpler methods that can be just as misleading:
- Miscaptioned media: a genuine photograph or video is paired with a false date, place or explanation.
- Out-of-context clips: a real recording is shortened so that a qualification, question or later correction disappears.
- Selective editing: cuts, rearranged sequences, altered speed or spliced audio change the apparent meaning.
- Fabricated media: an image, voice recording or video is wholly or partly generated or digitally altered.
- Impersonation: a proxy website, account or post is made to look like an official source.
These categories can overlap. A real speech may be clipped, given a synthetic voice-over and posted by an account pretending to represent an election office. “Looks real” is therefore not an authenticity test. Verify the specific claim the post makes.
The verification workflow
Use the following sequence before sharing a consequential political claim. It works for still images, short clips, livestream excerpts, voice messages and screenshots.

1. Pause and write down the exact claim
Do not begin by asking whether the pixels look natural. State what the post wants you to believe: for example, “This clip shows a county employee destroying valid ballots on 12 October,” or “This recording is a candidate admitting that polling places will close early.” A genuine image can carry a false caption, and a genuine clip can omit the context needed to understand it.
Record the wording, account name, displayed date and any claimed location. Save a screenshot or the original file if possible; posts can be edited or deleted. Avoid downloading and reposting the media while you investigate, because each copy can lose metadata and amplify an unverified allegation.
2. Trace who published it first
Inspect the account or website that supplied the item, not only the account that reshared it. Look for an earliest available publication and compare timestamps. Ask:

- Does its profile imitate an election office, news organization or public official?
- Does the site use a near-identical name, logo or web address to impersonate an authority?
- Are there corrections, contact details and links to primary documents, or only anonymous assertions?
- Did the account appear suddenly and begin posting only inflammatory election material?
CISA’s archived guidance on inauthentic content and tactics of disinformation identifies manipulated audio and video and proxy websites as tactics. Because those pages are archived, they may not reflect current policy; use them as background concepts and check current official guidance for your jurisdiction.
Provenance is not a guarantee. A reputable account can make a mistake, and an anonymous account can share a genuine recording. It is a starting point for finding the original evidence.

3. Check the date, place and complete context
Search the quoted words, event name, speaker and location. Compare the short version with a full recording, transcript or contemporaneous coverage from independent outlets. Check signs, weather, clothing, flags, venue layouts and language for clues about when and where the material was made, but treat every clue as provisional.
For a still image, use a reverse image search to find earlier appearances. An earlier match can reveal that a photograph was taken years before the election or in another country. A match alone does not establish that the current caption is accurate, nor does a lack of matches prove the image is new.

Look for an uncut event stream, a transcript, a public meeting agenda or a local report that describes the same moment. For audio, search an unusual sentence in quotation marks and compare the speaker’s known recordings, while remembering that a genuine voice can be edited into a false sequence.
4. Verify election-process claims with the responsible official
When a post concerns voting dates, registration, eligibility, polling locations, ballot handling, counting, certification or alleged action by an election office, go directly to the relevant state or local election authority. Use the office’s independently verified official contact information rather than a phone number or link embedded in the suspicious post.
Election rules differ by state, territory, county and municipality. A viral claim about one jurisdiction cannot establish what is happening elsewhere. Check the office’s current election calendar, notices and ballot-status information, and contact staff if the claim is not addressed publicly.

The FBI’s October 18, 2024 IC3 advisory reproduced this CISA recommendation: “Seek out information from trusted, official sources, such as state and local election officials, and verify reported claims through trusted, official sources before sharing such information.” That advice is especially important when a post urges an immediate action, such as changing a polling location or abandoning a voting method.
5. Look for independent corroboration
Find at least one source that did not simply copy the original post. Useful corroboration can include a full public recording, a dated press release, a court filing, a contemporaneous local report or a statement from the named institution. Compare what each source actually establishes, rather than counting reposts as separate confirmation.
Agreement among accounts that all received the item from one anonymous channel is not independent corroboration. Conversely, disagreement does not automatically make the original false; it may mean that the claim is still developing or that sources are describing different parts of an event.
6. Treat anomalies as leads, not verdicts
Zooming in can reveal mismatched lip movements, abrupt lighting changes, warped text, inconsistent reflections, unnatural background motion or an audio cadence that changes at an edit. Those observations justify checking the source and full context. They do not prove manipulation.
Real cameras create compression blocks, rolling-shutter distortions, dropped frames, focus changes and odd shadows. Poor microphones, language differences, illness, stress and ordinary editing can affect a person’s voice or facial movement. A polished clip can still be deceptive, and an imperfect clip can be genuine.

7. Decide what you can responsibly say and share
If the evidence establishes the claim, describe the evidence and its limits. If it is contradicted, explain which source and date show the contradiction. If it remains unresolved, say that it is unverified and avoid repeating the allegation as fact.
When correcting a false post, do not unnecessarily reproduce its most sensational frame or repeat its wording in a headline. Link or point readers to the official information they need, such as the correct polling-place lookup or election-office notice. Preserve the original URL and timestamp for reporters or platform moderators who may need to investigate.

Why visual and audio “tells” are unreliable
Faces, hands and eyes
Older synthetic media often showed malformed fingers, stiff expressions or unusual blinking. Newer generation and editing systems, camera artifacts and video compression can hide or imitate those effects. People also naturally blink at different rates and make asymmetrical expressions. Never authenticate a candidate or election worker solely from hands, teeth, eyes or facial symmetry.
Lip-sync and voice
A slight mismatch between mouth movement and speech can result from dubbing, a delayed livestream, transcoding or an ordinary edit. Conversely, high-quality voice synthesis may have no obvious flaw. Compare the complete audio with a reliable recording and verify what the speaker is alleged to have said through an official transcript or statement.

Lighting, shadows and backgrounds
Inconsistent shadows, reflections or text can be useful clues, but changing light, multiple cameras, rolling shutters and post-processing produce similar artifacts. A suspicious background should send you back to provenance and corroboration, not to a snap judgment.

Metadata and file details
File names, creation dates and embedded metadata can be changed or stripped when media is uploaded to a platform. Treat them as supporting information only. A clean metadata record does not certify authenticity, and missing metadata is normal for many social-media files.
Why detector scores should not decide a political claim
Deepfake detectors are trained on particular kinds of media and can perform differently as generation methods, codecs and platforms change. Re-encoding, cropping, subtitles, low resolution and a short duration can affect a result. A detector may flag authentic material or miss a manipulated clip, and different tools may disagree.
The Brennan Center for Justice advises against depending on deepfake-detection tools for political content because of their limited accuracy. Use any available score only as one lead in the workflow above. Do not present “95% AI” or “passed as real” as a settled finding, and do not direct readers to an unverified service as an authority.

On November 4, 2024, a joint statement from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, the FBI and CISA said that Russian influence actors had manufactured and amplified a video falsely depicting an interview with a person claiming election fraud in Arizona. The video included allegations about fake overseas ballots and changes to voter rolls.
This is an example from the 2024 U.S. election cycle, not evidence of a current 2026 incident. Its lesson is procedural: a plausible-looking political interview still requires source, date, context and claim verification. For the relevant facts, the statement directed voters toward trusted official information, particularly state and local election officials.
How to handle common election-media claims

When you cannot verify the item
- Label it clearly as unverified rather than “probably true” or “definitely fake.”
- Do not forward it to a group merely to ask whether others think it is real; that spreads the claim before it is checked.
- Send the original post to the relevant election office, platform reporting channel or journalist if it alleges an immediate threat or impersonates an official source.
- Keep notes of the URL, account, displayed date, claimed location and checks you performed.
- Recheck after an official statement or full recording becomes available. An unresolved claim is not proof of either side.
Limits of the guidance
The cited election warnings and incident example are U.S.-focused, and the Arizona example is specifically from 2024. Voting procedures, official websites and reporting channels vary by jurisdiction and can change between elections. CISA’s inauthentic-content and disinformation pages are archived background resources; confirm current instructions with your state or local election officials before acting or advising someone else.
No single visual checklist, reverse-search result, source reputation, metadata field or detector score can settle every authenticity question. A defensible conclusion comes from converging evidence: where the item began, when and where it was made, whether it is complete, what independent sources show and what the responsible election authority confirms.
