Before you trade, use three checks in order: match the card to an official Pokémon listing, hold it up to a bright light as a warning-sign screen, and assess the seller and price. If the identity or appearance still does not make sense, stop and ask a local shop that specializes in trading cards for an informed evaluation. Pokémon does not publish a single home test that certifies authenticity, so no one check should be treated as proof.

What you can—and cannot—prove at home

Counterfeit Pokémon cards range from obviously incorrect prints to convincing copies. Pokémon Support’s consumer guidance recommends familiarizing yourself with official product images, checking a suspicious card against those references, and using a bright-light check because counterfeit cards are often easy to see through. Those steps help you screen a card; they are not a forensic authentication protocol.

The practical goal before a trade is therefore not to award a pass/fail score from one trick. It is to gather enough independent evidence to decide whether to proceed. A card that matches an official listing, does not show an unusual see-through appearance, and comes from a credible transaction context is less concerning than one that fails several checks. If a material doubt remains, defer the trade rather than trying to prove the card genuine by damaging it.

Pokémon’s official article, updated May 26, 2026, says: “Counterfeit cards are often easy to see through if you hold them up to a bright light, so this is a good way to identify a fake.” Read that as a screening recommendation, not as a guarantee that an opaque card is authentic. The same guidance suggests asking a local trading-card shop to evaluate a potentially counterfeit card when you remain unsure.

A five-minute pre-trade inspection

Ask to inspect the card in good light before money or cards change hands. Work through the sequence below without bending, tearing, wetting or otherwise damaging the card.

  1. Identify the card. Read the name, card number if visible, set or expansion information, language and other printed details. If the card is unfamiliar, write the name down so you can search it accurately.
  2. Find the official reference. Open the Pokémon TCG Card Database and search by the card name and relevant attributes. Compare the official image and listing details with the card in front of you.
  3. Check the expansion information. Pokémon says the expansion icon appears at the bottom-right of a card. Confirm that the icon and set information correspond to the official listing, rather than relying on artwork alone.
  4. Perform the light-through screen. In a dim room, hold the card up to a bright light. A card that appears unusually easy to see through is a warning sign. A bright LED flashlight can provide illumination, but Pokémon does not endorse a particular device and the flashlight does not authenticate the card.
  5. Evaluate the offer. Consider whether the price, seller, packaging and urgency make sense. Pokémon calls a price dramatically below suggested retail for a booster pack a near-certain warning sign of counterfeit merchandise and says fake booster packs can be very difficult to distinguish from real ones.
  6. Pause if anything remains unexplained. Do not complete the trade while you are still trying to rationalize a mismatch. Take the card to a local shop specializing in trading cards for a second opinion.

Use the official card database as your identity check

Search by name and attributes

The database is useful when you need to establish what a legitimate card is supposed to be. Pokémon’s support instructions explain that you can search the Trading Card Game database by card name and other attributes. Start with the exact name printed on the card; then narrow the results by expansion, type or other available fields when several cards share a name.

Open the official database at pokemon.com/us/pokemon-tcg/pokemon-cards/. Choose the result that matches the card’s language and set context, then compare the complete image rather than only the character artwork. Look at the card’s layout, attacks, weakness and resistance symbols, rarity or regulation markings where shown, number, illustrator credit and expansion icon. A difference can be a legitimate alternate printing, language edition or product release, so use the database to ask a precise question: “Does this exact combination of name, set and design exist?”

Confirm the expansion icon and set

Pokémon identifies the expansion icon at the card’s bottom-right. Check that symbol against the official image and verify that the card’s set name or number is compatible with it. An artwork match by itself is not enough because the same Pokémon may appear in multiple expansions with different attacks, numbers and symbols.

If the database does not immediately show a match, do not jump straight to “fake.” Check spelling, language and alternate set entries first. The database changes as new releases are added, and an unfamiliar card may belong to a newer or non-English release. If you still cannot reconcile the card with an official listing, treat that unresolved identity as a reason to stop and seek specialist help.

Save a reference for the transaction

For an expensive trade, save the official listing URL or a screenshot showing the card you compared. Record the card’s name, set, number and language alongside the date and seller. This does not authenticate the card, but it prevents confusion when several printings look similar and gives a shop clearer information if you later ask for an evaluation.

Perform Pokémon’s bright-light check safely

How to do it

  1. Move to a room where the light is controlled enough to see the card’s edges and surface.
  2. Hold the card by its edges and place a bright light behind it. A phone flashlight or bright LED flashlight may help illuminate the card; no particular model is required by Pokémon.
  3. Look for an unusually clear view of the light or background through the card. Compare the result with a known official card from the same language and a similar era if one is available.
  4. Stop after this visual check. Do not bend, rip, wet, heat or chemically test the card.

Pokémon describes unusual transparency as a common counterfeit warning sign, not as a requirement that every genuine card be completely opaque. Thickness, lighting angle, card language, printing and personal vision can affect what you see. Conversely, a card that blocks the light is not automatically genuine. Record the observation as “warning sign present” or “no unusual transparency noticed,” then weigh it with the database match and transaction context.

Why a flashlight is only a tool

A flashlight supplies bright light; it does not measure paper composition, printing layers or provenance. A seller may offer a card that passes the light screen but has an identity mismatch, or a legitimate card may look different under uneven lighting. Keep the light check in its proper role: a quick, non-destructive screen that tells you whether to investigate further.

Read the price and selling context as risk signals

Dramatically underpriced booster packs

Pokémon says fake booster packs can be very difficult to discern from real ones and calls a price dramatically below suggested retail a near-certain warning sign of counterfeit merchandise. This warning applies to the offer context; it is not a mathematical rule that every discount is fraudulent. A legitimate seller may discount damaged packaging, a collection or an older product for reasons you can verify.

Ask what exactly is being sold: a single card, a loose pack, a sealed display or a mixed lot. Compare the offer with ordinary prices for the same product and condition, and ask for a clear explanation of an extreme discount. If the seller refuses inspection, pushes you to pay immediately or changes the product description, treat that behavior as additional risk and walk away.

Flea markets and informal venues

Pokémon reports receiving the highest instances of counterfeit-sales reports from flea markets. That is a statement about reports received by Pokémon, not a quantified counterfeit rate and not proof that every flea-market seller or item is fake. At any informal venue, insist on inspecting the card, checking its identity and keeping the option to decline.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Seller claims are not authentication

Statements such as “pulled today,” “came from a friend” or “guaranteed real” are context, not evidence. Ask for the card’s exact set and compare it with the official database. If the seller will not allow a reasonable inspection or a specialist second opinion, the safest decision is not to trade.

Do not use language or country of origin as a shortcut

A card’s language and manufacturing origin can look unfamiliar without being counterfeit. Pokémon’s manufacturing information lists different origins for different language editions and says the country of origin can be determined from the product wrapping. That makes rules such as “this language means fake” or “this country means fake” unreliable.

Use language and origin as identification details instead. Confirm that the card is an official edition in that language, check the corresponding database entry, and examine the wrapping or product information when origin matters. Origin alone does not establish authenticity, and a mismatch may reflect an edition difference rather than a counterfeit.

For the official information, see Pokémon’s Country of Origin guidance. It was updated January 30, 2026.

When and how to ask a specialist shop

When to stop the trade

  • The card cannot be matched to an official name, set or image after you check spelling and language.
  • The card is unusually easy to see through under bright light.
  • The price or packaging is dramatically out of line with the product being offered.
  • The seller will not let you inspect the card or is creating pressure to complete the deal.
  • Several small inconsistencies appear together, even if no single one proves a counterfeit.

What to bring

Bring the card in a protective sleeve or holder, any packaging, the seller’s listing or receipt, and the official database reference you used. Explain what you observed rather than demanding a yes-or-no verdict based on one test. Pokémon says a shop specializing in trading cards may be able to evaluate a potentially counterfeit card; it does not promise that every shop offers formal authentication or written certification. Ask what kind of opinion the shop can provide and whether there is a fee.

How to handle the decision

Until you receive an informed evaluation, keep the card and your trade items separate. Do not resell or trade a card you suspect is counterfeit. If a shop cannot establish the card’s identity, treat that uncertainty as sufficient reason not to complete the transaction.

Compare two cards or offers without inventing a score

Pokémon does not publish an authentication scorecard. You can still compare alternatives consistently by recording the following prompts for each card or offer. They are practical decision prompts derived from Pokémon’s guidance, not an official grading system.

Question What to record How it affects the decision
Does the identity match? Official database result for name, set, number, language and expansion icon An unresolved mismatch means pause and investigate.
Is there a physical warning sign? Whether the card appears unusually see-through under bright light A warning sign increases concern but cannot prove a fake by itself.
Does the offer make sense? Price, packaging condition, venue and seller behavior A dramatic underprice for a booster pack or refusal to allow inspection calls for caution.
What is the next step? Proceed, request more information, or ask a specialist shop If important doubts remain, defer the trade rather than guessing.

Use the same questions for both sides of a proposed swap. A card with a perfect-looking surface but no matching official listing should not outrank a less flashy card whose identity and context are clear. Conversely, a database match does not erase an unusual transparency warning or a suspiciously underpriced sealed product.

Common mistakes that can destroy evidence

Destructive “tests”

Pokémon’s published support guidance does not recommend bending, ripping, water, heat, blacklight or other destructive or experimental tests as definitive authentication methods. Do not sacrifice a collectible to perform an internet test. Damage can reduce the card’s value, obscure the original condition and still leave you without reliable proof.

Declaring a card genuine because one check passed

An opaque card is not automatically genuine, and a card that resembles an official image may still be a counterfeit. Keep the checks separate: identity reference, light-through warning sign, and transaction context. The decision should reflect the combined evidence and your willingness to accept uncertainty.

Assuming every unfamiliar printing is fake

Different languages, expansions and releases can change symbols, text and artwork. Verify the edition before treating a difference as an error. The official database and Pokémon’s country-of-origin information are more reliable than stereotypes about language or manufacturing location.

Letting urgency override inspection

Scarcity claims, a countdown or a promise that someone else is waiting do not change the card’s identity. A legitimate trade can wait long enough for a database check or a specialist opinion. If the seller will not allow that time, decline.

Special cases: sealed packs and mixed lots

Sealed booster packs

Do not assume that factory-looking wrapping settles the question. Pokémon specifically warns that fake booster packs can be hard to distinguish from real ones and identifies a dramatically below-retail price as a near-certain warning sign. Check the product identity and seller context, and be especially cautious when you cannot inspect the contents or verify provenance.

Mixed collections

Inspect cards individually. A credible card in a collection does not authenticate every other card, and one suspicious card does not prove that the entire lot is counterfeit. Separate cards by language and apparent set, search unfamiliar names in the official database, and ask a specialist shop to review the group if several items remain unresolved.

Online trades

Request clear, well-lit photographs of the front and back, the card’s name and set, and any packaging. Use the images to locate the exact official reference, but remember that photographs can hide transparency, texture and edge issues. Make the transaction conditional on an inspection or a return arrangement that you understand before paying.

A record-keeping checklist for expensive trades

  • Card name, set or expansion, card number and language.
  • URL of the matching official database entry.
  • Photographs of the front, back, edges and any packaging, taken before the trade.
  • Date, price or items exchanged, seller identity and venue.
  • Notes from the bright-light check, including the lighting used and what you observed.
  • Any specialist-shop opinion, including whether it was informal or a formal service.

Keep records without publishing personal information unnecessarily. If the card later proves problematic, these details help you explain exactly what was offered and what checks were performed.
