The safest way to evaluate a LEGO listing is to separate two questions: are the parts genuine, and are all the promised parts actually present? Start with the exact set number, compare the seller’s claim with a set-specific inventory, and treat seals, photos, markings, seller statements, and weight as separate clues rather than proof. A sealed box can still be incomplete, while an opened set can be authentic and fully checked.

Before you pay, define what you are buying, request evidence of the actual item, record every exception in writing, and price realistic replacement parts. If a seller will not substantiate an important claim, do not pay a premium for it.

What “complete,” “sealed,” and “authentic” each mean

Listing language often compresses several different promises into one word. A buyer can receive a genuine set that is missing a minifigure, an authentic set in a resealed box, or a counterfeit box containing parts that look convincing. Evaluate each claim independently.

Seller’s claim What it should establish What it does not establish by itself
Sealed The box and its closures appear unopened and original. That every bag, figure, sticker sheet, instruction, or part is present. BrickLink’s condition guidance states: “The seller cannot guarantee that a sealed set is complete.”
Complete The scope the seller has actually checked, such as all parts needed for the model. Authenticity, original packaging, spare parts, or a box in good condition.
100% genuine The seller’s assertion that the contents are genuine. That a mixed lot contains no substituted or counterfeit pieces unless the contents were inspected.
Like new A description of apparent condition. A parts inventory, intact seals, or an original box.

For used sets, BrickLink’s definition of “complete” concerns all parts needed to build all models shown in the instructions and the original stickers. The box, packaging, and extra parts are not required. Missing instructions must be disclosed. Agree on a broader definition if you want the box, sealed inner bags, spare elements, alternate-build components, or every accessory.

Step 1: Identify the exact set before judging the listing

Find the set number and version

Ask for the set number printed on the box or instructions and a direct photograph of the actual item. Set numbers can have regional, packaging, or edition differences, and an apparently identical box may contain a different release. Record the set number, edition or package version when relevant, and the condition the seller is claiming.

Do not use a finished-model photograph as your primary identification. A model can be assembled from parts from several sets, and stock images conceal the box, seals, stickers, instructions, and small accessories that determine value.

Define the purchase in writing

Send a short, specific question rather than asking only “Is it complete?” Clarify whether the seller means:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • the original model can be built;
  • every part in the set inventory is present;
  • all minifigures, animals, tools, weapons, printed elements, and other accessories are included;
  • the original sticker sheet is unused or present;
  • instructions and alternate-build instructions are included;
  • the box, inner bags, trays, and other packaging are included; and
  • extra parts are present.

Ask the seller to list every exception in the message thread. “Complete except for one figure” is actionable; “mostly complete” is not.

Step 2: Check an opened or built set against an inventory

Use a set-specific parts list

For an opened set, compare the actual contents with an inventory for that exact set number and version. Check each element by part or element number, color, and quantity. A total piece count is not enough: two sets can have the same number of pieces while differing in rare figures, printed parts, colors, or accessories.

LEGO’s help guidance says a piece number appears at the back of the building instructions and can be used when searching Pick a Brick. Numbers sometimes change, and BrickLink may show an updated number for an older piece. Use the number together with the shape and color, not as the sole identification test.

Inspect the parts most likely to be overlooked

Ask for close photographs or a live inspection of small, distinctive elements rather than only a photograph of the assembled model. Pay particular attention to:

  • minifigure torsos, heads, hair, helmets, capes, and printed legs;
  • animal figures, tools, weapons, jewels, and other tiny accessories;
  • transparent, metallic, pearl, or unusual-color pieces;
  • printed tiles, decorated slopes, control panels, and stickered elements;
  • special hinges, wheels, tracks, windows, doors, and large panels; and
  • parts hidden inside the model or left in an unopened bag.

Request photographs of loose contents spread out on a contrasting surface. If the model is still built, ask the seller to show concealed areas or to disassemble it sufficiently to verify them. A visible finished model proves only that the visible exterior can be assembled; it does not prove that every original component is present.

Separate required parts from extras

Mark each inventory line as present, missing, substituted, or not yet checked. Spare parts are normally not needed to build the model, so their absence does not necessarily make a used set incomplete under BrickLink’s definition. Conversely, a missing instruction booklet or sticker sheet may not prevent construction but must be disclosed and may matter to your price.

Alternate builds require special care. If a set’s instructions show several models, ask whether the seller means all models can be built, or only the primary model. Record the answer before buying.

Do not infer authenticity from one visible brick

A genuine LEGO stamp on one stud is useful evidence about that piece, but it cannot authenticate every element in a mixed lot. Counterfeit manufacturers can imitate common markings, and a genuine set can contain later substitutions. Examine several representative pieces, especially the distinctive or high-value ones, and compare their molding, clutch, color, printing, and geometry with reliable official product imagery or a known genuine example.

Step 3: Examine a sealed-set claim

Request original photographs of every side

Ask for the seller’s own photographs, not only catalog or stock images. Request all box faces, the top and bottom closures, both side seams, corners, barcode area, set number, and any inner-bag or shrink-wrap view that can be shown without opening the box. A timestamped photo with a handwritten reference can help establish that the seller has the specific item, although it is not an authenticity guarantee.

Look for disturbed closures

Inspect the adhesive area and the cardboard around it. Warning signs include:

  • tears or lifted fibers around a seal;
  • adhesive residue, a second glue layer, or a seal that sits over damaged cardboard;
  • re-gluing that is uneven, cloudy, or misaligned;
  • different seal styles on the same box without an explanation;
  • shrink-wrap that is loose, cut, heat-shrunk differently, or inconsistent with the box’s wear; and
  • crushed corners or shelf wear that does not fit the claimed factory-sealed condition.

Packaging practices changed across years and regions. An unfamiliar closure is a question to resolve, not automatic proof of a counterfeit. Compare it with credible photographs of the same set number and box version, and ask the seller when and where it was obtained.

Compare printing and legal details

Check the sharpness of the box artwork, color registration, typography, set number, age markings, company and legal text, barcode placement, and warning symbols against reliable official images for that release. Blurry type, incorrect spacing, muddy colors, spelling errors, or a barcode area that belongs to another package are material inconsistencies. A barcode scan alone is not proof: a genuine code can be copied onto another box, and a damaged code may simply fail to scan.

Use weight only as a screening check

A small digital kitchen or postal scale can help screen an expensive sealed purchase, but it is not an authentication device. Weigh a reference copy with the same set number, box version, regional packaging, and comparable packaging condition. Record the scale’s resolution and whether you are weighing the complete retail package or a box with missing wrap or inserts.

A difference should prompt questions about missing bags, a different edition, or packaging variation. A matching weight cannot rule out swapped parts, a counterweight, or a counterfeit package. There is no universal weight threshold that establishes authenticity or completeness.

Step 4: Assess the parts and packaging together

Clue Useful question Why it is limited
Stud or element markings Do several representative pieces have the expected molding and markings? One genuine mark does not validate a mixed lot, and some counterfeits imitate marks.
Print and color Does the box or decorated element match official imagery for this release? Lighting, camera settings, aging, and regional packaging can alter appearance.
Barcode Does the code correspond to the stated set and package? Codes can be copied, damaged, or replaced.
Seal Are closures intact and consistent with the box version? Original-looking seals do not prove the contents are complete.
Weight Does the package fall near a same-version reference? It cannot detect swaps or counterweights and varies with packaging.
Seller rating or price Is the seller specific, responsive, and willing to provide evidence? Ratings and bargains are context, not physical verification.

Describe only what the evidence shows. If a photograph hides the minifigures, seals, or barcode, ask for a clearer view instead of treating the unseen detail as acceptable.

Counterfeit warning signs that deserve a pause

No single sign proves a counterfeit, but several unresolved inconsistencies should change the buying decision. Pause when the box artwork uses noticeably incorrect typography or legal text; the seller refuses photographs of the actual item; the set number on the box, instructions, and listing does not agree; rare figures are shown only from a distance; the contents contain unexplained colors or mold shapes; or the seller insists that a stock image is sufficient proof.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Be cautious with listings that use “factory sealed” to avoid answering inventory questions, claim that a barcode scan proves every part is genuine, or offer a price that depends on an unverified rarity claim. Ask for evidence and a written explanation before negotiating around a concern.

Sealed versus opened: which listing gives better evidence?

Comparison point Sealed listing Opened and checked listing
Evidence of tampering Comes from seals, seams, wrap, box wear, and provenance photographs. Can be inspected directly, although the original packaging may be gone.
Evidence of completeness Indirect; a sealed label does not guarantee all contents are present. Strongest when the seller has checked every inventory line and shows exceptions.
Condition of parts Unknown until opening. Figures, stickers, prints, scratches, discoloration, and substitutions can be examined.
Box, instructions, and extras May be present, but only if the package and version are verified. Must be listed separately; extra parts and packaging are not automatically included.
Seller evidence Requires original photos of all sides and closures. Requires inventory records, close-ups, and a written missing-items list.
Financial risk You may pay for sealed status and discover missing or substituted contents after opening. You can price known omissions and replacement parts before purchase.

Choose the listing with the better evidence for your goal, not merely the one described as sealed. A clearly disclosed incomplete set can be a sensible purchase if the missing parts are inexpensive or unimportant to you. An expensive sealed set with unexplained closure damage is a weaker proposition than an opened set whose inventory has been demonstrated.

Calculate the real cost before you buy

Price missing parts realistically

For each missing element, record its part or element number, color, quantity, and whether it is essential to the build. Check current availability and the cost of the part, shipping, and any minimum order. Rare minifigures, printed pieces, stickers, and unusual colors can cost more than many ordinary bricks combined.

Include the value of missing instructions, box, or packaging only if those items matter to your collecting goal. If you want a display model, a missing box may be irrelevant; if you want a sealed or complete collectible, it is a material omission. Do not assume that LEGO’s replacement service will complete a used set.

Set a walk-away condition

Walk away, or make an offer based on the uncertainty, when the seller cannot identify the set, refuses actual photographs, will not list known omissions, or expects a premium for a seal or rarity that cannot be examined. Keep screenshots of the listing and the seller’s answers so the agreed condition is clear at payment.

What to do if something is missing after purchase

Newly opened LEGO set

LEGO’s replacement-part help covers missing bags in new sets, missing or damaged pieces, stickers, minifigures, and identifying set and piece numbers. LEGO says a minifigure or piece that is missing or broken when a new set is opened may be requested as a replacement. Keep the box, instructions, purchase information, and photographs of the contents while you contact LEGO through its replacement-part support.

This remedy addresses a new set’s manufacturing or packing problem. It is not evidence that a used listing was complete, and it should not be used to erase a seller’s undisclosed omission.

Used or second-hand set

Compare the received contents with the inventory and the seller’s written description. Photograph the package and missing areas immediately, then contact the seller through the marketplace’s message or dispute process. Refer to the exact promise that was made: “complete” under an agreed scope is different from “model shown in photo.” If the seller disclosed the omission, your remedy may simply be to complete the set at the price you accepted; if it was not disclosed, request a return, partial refund, or other remedy available under the marketplace’s rules.

A practical message to send a seller

Hello. Please confirm the exact set number and edition shown in the photos. By “complete,” do you mean all parts for every model in the instructions, all minifigures and accessories, the original stickers, instructions, box, and extra parts? Please list anything missing or substituted. Could you send original photos of all box sides and seals, plus close-ups of the minifigures, decorated parts, stickers, and any loose contents? If the set is opened, have you checked it against an element-by-element inventory?

Keep the seller’s reply with the listing. A precise answer gives you a defined purchase; a vague answer identifies an unresolved risk.

Final purchase checklist

  • Exact set number and relevant edition or package version are confirmed.
  • Photos show the actual item, not only a stock model image.
  • “Complete” is defined for parts, figures, stickers, instructions, alternate builds, extras, and packaging.
  • Opened contents have been checked against a set-specific inventory by element, color, and quantity.
  • Distinctive figures, decorated parts, accessories, and concealed areas have been shown.
  • Sealed listings include photographs of every face, seam, closure, and barcode area.
  • Seal, print, markings, barcode, and weight clues have been considered together, with their limitations.
  • Missing-part and shipping costs have been included in the total price.
  • Important claims and exceptions are written in the seller’s message thread.
  • You know whether you will walk away, negotiate, or accept the set as described if a material detail remains unknown.

The most defensible purchase is not necessarily the one with the cleanest seal or lowest price. It is the one whose set identity, contents, condition, and remaining uncertainty are all explicit enough for you to price the risk.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
