The reliable way to screen a One Piece figure is to verify several independent details together: the exact release, maker and product markings, packaging and contents, seller evidence, and the price for that same release and condition. A missing sticker, a low price, or a familiar-looking box is not proof by itself. Before paying, compare the listing with the maker’s official product information and buy through an official or authorized channel whenever possible.
Why a careful check matters
Counterfeit One Piece merchandise is a documented enforcement issue, although no current study establishes what percentage of figures on the market are fake. In a January 31, 2014 release, Bandai, MegaHouse and BANPRESTO reported that more than 1,000 counterfeit One Piece goods were confiscated during a November 2013 action in Guangzhou, China. The rights holders identified unusually cheap pricing as a major characteristic of the infringing goods. That incident is historical evidence, not a current global prevalence estimate. Counterfeits also remain a broader e-commerce concern. Bandai Namco Holdings says its AI-based system removes more than 30,000 counterfeit products per year from global e-commerce sites in the context of its fiscal 2024 activity. The pre-purchase decision process
Use the following order. Stop when a seller refuses a reasonable request for evidence or when several independent details conflict.
- Identify the precise release. Record the character, figure line, maker, product name or number, release edition and expected accessories.
- Find the maker’s official product information. Compare the seller’s item with the exact release, not merely another figure of the same character.
- Request item-specific photographs. You need the actual box and figure, including markings and parts, rather than only promotional images.
- Check markings, wording and contents. Look for consistent logos, copyright text, names, product numbers, bases and accessories.
- Put the price in context. Compare the same release in similar condition and region; investigate a dramatic undercut without treating it as conclusive.
- Evaluate the seller and transaction. Prefer an official shop or authorized retailer, and require a clear return path for marketplace purchases.
- Ask the manufacturer after purchase if necessary. Support teams may review photos under their own policies, but they generally cannot pre-authenticate an online listing you do not possess.
1. Identify the exact figure before comparing anything
Capture the release identity
Write down the character name, the figure series or line, the manufacturer, the product name or catalog number, the release edition and the distribution region shown in the listing. Two figures depicting the same character can have different boxes, bases, accessories, paint applications and license marks. A comparison with a different release can make a genuine item look wrong or allow a fake to pass.
Build an expected-contents list
Use the official product page to note every expected component: the main figure, alternate parts, weapons, effects, stands, cards, stickers and any region-specific insert. Missing or extra parts are warning signs when they do not match the official description. They can also indicate a used, opened or incomplete genuine figure, so treat the discrepancy as a reason to ask questions rather than automatic proof of counterfeiting.
Match the official naming and branding
Compare the exact spelling and sequence of the product and character names, maker and brand marks, copyright line and product number. Odd grammar, inconsistent transliteration, a logo that changes shape between panels or wording that does not appear on the official release deserves investigation. A copied logo can look convincing, so identity checks must be combined with photos, seller evidence and contents.
2. Inspect the box and the figure in item-specific photos
Ask for all sides of the package
Request clear, well-lit photographs of the front, back, left and right sides, top and bottom, plus close-ups of logos, barcodes or product numbers, copyright text and seals. Ask for the figure outside the package, its base and every included part. Blurry images, cropped corners and photographs that never show the bottom or back prevent meaningful comparison.

Distinguish stock art from proof of possession
A listing that uses only manufacturer promotional images has not demonstrated that the seller owns the item shown. Ask for a new photograph with a handwritten date or the seller’s username beside the box if the marketplace permits that request. The purpose is not the handwriting itself; it is to connect the specific box and figure to the seller’s possession. If the seller will not provide reasonable item-specific images, treat that lack of evidence as transaction risk.
Check print and construction consistency
Compare the official package layout, colors, fonts, character name, copyright line and logo placement panel by panel. Look for misspellings, low-resolution printing, uneven color registration, suspiciously thin cardboard, mismatched fonts or a box image that does not correspond to the release. Inspect the figure for rough seams, poorly fitted parts, paint that differs substantially from official photographs and a base or copyright mark that does not match the release. These are screening clues, not a guaranteed laboratory test: a genuine item can have factory variation, and a counterfeit can imitate a box closely.
3. Treat price as a warning signal, not a verdict
The 2014 rights-holder release described cheap pricing as a major characteristic of the counterfeit One Piece goods in that enforcement action. TAMASHII WEB likewise lists prices substantially below normal as a warning sign. Read TAMASHII WEB’s counterfeit warning. Neither source establishes a universal minimum price or a percentage discount that proves an item is fake.
Compare the offer with the same release, condition, completeness and region. A genuine used figure can cost less because the box is damaged, parts are missing, the item has been displayed, or the seller needs a quick sale. Conversely, a new figure priced far below comparable listings deserves additional verification. Record the seller’s explanation and check whether the photographs support it; do not let a “limited-time” countdown or pressure to pay privately replace evidence.
4. Evaluate the seller and the transaction
Choose the strongest sales channel
TAMASHII WEB recommends official shops or authorized retailers and advises following links from official product pages to designated sales sites where available. This approach does not make every marketplace listing invalid, but it gives you a clearer source of inventory and a defined support or returns route.

Screen marketplace sellers
- Look for a history of collectible-figure sales rather than a newly created account with unrelated stock.
- Require item-specific photos and a complete condition description.
- Check whether the seller identifies the business or individual clearly and states where the item ships from.
- Confirm the marketplace’s return window, payment protection and procedure for an item that is not as described.
- Be cautious if the seller pushes you into private messages, asks for payment outside the platform or conceals their identity. TAMASHII WEB lists concealed seller identity and suspicious direct-message transactions among its warning signs.
A seller with excellent feedback can still list one counterfeit item, and a low-feedback seller can possess a genuine collection. Use the account history as one part of the evidence rather than as a guarantee.

5. Interpret stickers, holograms and license marks by release and region
“Sticker present equals real” and “sticker absent equals fake” are unsafe rules. Authentication marks depend on the manufacturer, product line, release date, exceptions and distribution region.
TAMASHII NATIONS guidance
TAMASHII WEB says TAMASHII NATIONS QUALITY stickers have been used on TAMASHII NATIONS products from 2023 onward, with some exceptions. It also describes hologram stickers on products released from 2018 through 2023. Bandai Namco’s infringement-protection information similarly says special forgery-prevention stickers apply to TAMASHII NATIONS products except certain items. A transition period and exceptions mean that the release identity must be established before a mark can be interpreted.
Good Smile Company guidance
Good Smile Company states that not every product has a license sticker. Some labels are printed directly on packaging, and label designs can change between releases and distribution regions. Its support article warns that not every bootleg has all of the listed characteristics, so the absence of a particular defect does not guarantee authenticity. Read the company’s bootleg information.
How to use a mark correctly
- Identify the maker and product line from the official release page.
- Check the release date and sales region.
- Read that maker’s release-specific guidance for the mark’s location, design and exceptions.
- Compare the mark with the actual box and product, while also checking wording, copyright, contents, seller and price.
A copied hologram or printed logo can be imitated. A genuine item can lack a sticker that was never required for that release. The mark should raise or lower confidence only in combination with independent evidence.

6. Compare two listings with the same evidence standard
When two offers compete, place them side by side instead of choosing the cheaper one immediately.

There is no source-backed universal scoring system. If one listing has a lower price but weaker photos, an evasive seller and no return path, the apparent saving does not compensate for the evidence gap.
7. Contact the manufacturer when the item is already in hand
Manufacturer support can be useful when you have the physical item and can provide detailed evidence. Policies differ. Good Smile Company asks for packaging photographs, product photographs and the copyright mark on the base. It says it cannot authenticate an online listing before the buyer possesses the item. Send the requested images through the manufacturer’s published support channel and describe the exact release and seller listing.
Keep the invoice, listing URL, seller messages, payment record, shipping label and every photograph. Do not alter, discard or return the item before documenting the condition if the marketplace or manufacturer may need evidence. Follow the platform’s stated return or dispute process rather than moving the discussion to an unprotected private payment channel.

Counterfeiting is not only a branding problem. Bandai says counterfeit products can have quality and safety shortcomings, and Kotobukiya cautions that many counterfeit products may not meet its required quality standards. These are manufacturer warnings, not a quantified safety study of One Piece figures. Read Kotobukiya’s counterfeit information. If a figure has an unusual odor, brittle or sharp parts, unstable joints, leaking paint or unexplained residue, keep it away from children and pets and contact the seller or platform for a remedy instead of displaying it.

Common mistakes that let fakes pass
Relying on one sticker
Sticker programs vary by maker, date and region, and copied marks exist. Verify the release first and then assess the sticker with the rest of the evidence.
Using a universal price threshold
No evidence establishes a single percentage discount or minimum price that separates genuine and counterfeit One Piece figures. Condition, completeness and regional availability can explain legitimate differences.
Comparing only the character
A seller can show a genuine figure of the right character while listing a different release or a counterfeit copy. Match the exact product identity and expected parts.
Trusting polished stock photographs
Promotional images show what the product should look like, not what the seller will ship. Require photographs of the actual box and item.
Assuming feedback proves authenticity
Feedback indicates transaction history, not a manufacturer’s authentication. Check the specific listing, evidence and return terms.
What the available enforcement figures do and do not show
- The Bandai, MegaHouse and BANPRESTO release records more than 1,000 counterfeit One Piece goods seized in one November 2013 Guangzhou action, reported on January 31, 2014. It does not state current prevalence, global sales volume or a counterfeit rate.
- Bandai Namco’s more-than-30,000-per-year removal figure concerns counterfeit products across its portfolio on global e-commerce sites during the context of fiscal 2024 reporting. It is not a One Piece-specific count.
- Official guidance supports checking product identity, marks, wording, contents, seller transparency and price anomalies. Those are screening signals, not a universal authentication method.
A concise checklist to use at checkout
- Have I identified the exact maker, line, product number, edition and region?
- Does the seller’s box match the official product page on every visible panel?
- Have I seen clear photographs of the actual box, base, copyright mark and all parts?
- Are names, logos, copyright text and contents consistent and correctly spelled?
- Is the price explainable by condition, completeness and regional availability?
- Is the seller identifiable, responsive and willing to use a protected payment and return process?
- Have I checked the maker’s guidance for this release before interpreting a sticker or hologram?
- If important evidence is missing, am I prepared to walk away?
Bottom line
Buy only when the exact release, official product information, item-specific photos, seller and transaction terms agree. A low price, a convincing box or an authenticity sticker can each be imitated or misunderstood; several independent matches are the defensible way to reduce the risk of a counterfeit One Piece figure.
