To spot concentration risk, examine every account together, look through each fund to its current holdings, and total exposure by company, industry or sector, geography, asset category, and overlapping funds. Then compare those actual weights with your intended allocation and your ability to tolerate losses. Several funds can still leave you dependent on the same companies, so fund names and security counts are not enough.
No regulator-defined percentage makes an AI concentration “too high” for every investor. The appropriate level depends on your goals, time horizon, risk tolerance, and the rest of your portfolio. Treat any threshold as a personal planning decision, not a universal rule.
What concentration risk means in an AI portfolio
Concentration risk is the possibility that a large part of a portfolio depends on one issuer, a related group of issuers, an industry or sector, a geographic market, or one type of asset. If that shared exposure falls, the portfolio can lose more than you intended, even when it contains many separate securities.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesAI-themed investing makes hidden concentration easy to miss. A portfolio may contain a broad-market fund, an AI-themed fund, a technology fund, and individual shares. Those vehicles may all own some of the same large companies. Counting four fund names as four independent sources of diversification would overstate the protection you actually have.

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) explains that a fund can concentrate in an industry, sector, or geographic area and therefore be less diversified and more volatile than a fund without that concentration. Read the wording in the fund’s prospectus rather than inferring diversification from its name: Investor.gov’s prospectus guide.
Concentration is not automatically wrong. A focused position may be deliberate and compatible with a long time horizon and high risk tolerance. The problem is an exposure that is larger, more duplicated, or more fragile than your plan allows.
Why an AI label can hide duplicated exposure
Multiple funds can own the same leaders
Two funds with different mandates may both list the same companies among their top holdings. Add a direct position in one of those companies and the combined exposure can be much larger than any single account statement suggests. The SEC recommends comparing top holdings across funds instead of assuming that each fund provides a different set of risks: Asset Allocation and Diversification.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →A narrow fund can contain many securities
A fund may hold dozens or hundreds of securities while remaining focused on one industry, sector, country, or investment theme. The number of line items measures breadth inside that mandate, not independence from your other holdings.
AI businesses can share common risks
Even when issuers are different, they may be exposed to the same economic driver through a shared sector, geography, or asset category. Grouping exposures at several levels reveals risks that an issuer-by-issuer list misses.
A repeatable concentration-risk review
Use the following sequence whenever you review an AI-heavy portfolio. It is a practical framework based on SEC investor education; it is not a regulator-defined score or allocation formula.
1. Inventory the entire portfolio
Collect the latest statement for every relevant account, including taxable accounts, retirement plans, employer plans, and cash-management or other investment accounts. Record direct securities, mutual funds, exchange-traded funds (ETFs), cash, and other asset categories. Use market values from the same date where possible.

For each line, capture:
- Security name and ticker or identifier
- Market value and percentage of the account
- Account type and owner
- Whether the position is direct or held through a fund
- The statement date
Combining accounts matters because a position that looks modest in one account can be large when all accounts are viewed together.
2. Look through every fund
Open the fund’s current portfolio disclosure, prospectus, and most recent shareholder report. Record the largest holdings and their weights, then compare those names with direct positions and with the holdings of your other funds. ETF guidance on Investor.gov explains where to find the prospectus, shareholder report, risks, and costs: SEC ETF investor information.
Holdings change. Mark the “as of” date for each list and avoid treating an old snapshot as a current portfolio. If a fund discloses only a partial list, note that your overlap calculation is incomplete rather than filling in missing values.
3. Group exposures across five dimensions
Assign each direct holding and each look-through holding to the categories below. One security can appear in more than one category; the purpose is to expose different kinds of dependence.
Recommended Free Tools
| Dimension | What to total | Question to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Individual issuer | Direct shares plus each fund’s percentage invested in the same issuer | How much of the portfolio depends on one company? |
| Industry or sector | Holdings classified in the same industry or sector, including fund exposures | Would a sector-wide decline affect many positions at once? |
| Geography | Exposure to a country, region, or market | Are several vehicles tied to the same geographic economy or market? |
| Asset category | Stocks, bonds, cash, and other categories represented in the portfolio | Is the overall mix consistent with the plan’s intended risk level? |
| Fund overlap | Repeated issuers or shared sector and geographic exposures across funds | Do different fund names provide genuinely different exposures? |
The SEC discusses diversification both between and within asset categories and specifically highlights industry, sector, and geographic concentration. See the Beginners’ Guide to Asset Allocation, Diversification, and Rebalancing.
4. Calculate look-through weights
For an issuer held directly and through funds, add the direct percentage to each fund’s portfolio percentage multiplied by your percentage of the total portfolio invested in that fund.
For example, suppose a hypothetical $100,000 portfolio has:

- $20,000 directly invested in Company A
- $30,000 in Fund X, which reports 10% in Company A
- $10,000 in Fund Y, which reports 5% in Company A
The look-through exposure is $20,000 + $3,000 + $500 = $23,500, or 23.5% of the portfolio. That is different from the 20% shown by the direct holding alone. The calculation is illustrative; use your own statement values and each fund’s current disclosure.
| Source of exposure | Portfolio value | Fund weight in Company A | Look-through value |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direct holding | $20,000 | Not applicable | $20,000 |
| Fund X | $30,000 | 10% | $3,000 |
| Fund Y | $10,000 | 5% | $500 |
| Total | — | — | $23,500 |
Repeat the exercise for other repeated issuers and, where data permits, for sectors, industries, and geographies. Keep a note of incomplete holdings data so you do not mistake an estimate for a complete total.
5. Compare actual weights with your intended allocation
Write down the allocation you intended when you built the portfolio: asset categories, any deliberate sector or thematic exposure, and the risk level needed for your goals. Compare that plan with the current look-through totals.
Market movements can change relative weights without any new purchase. The SEC uses an illustrative example in which a stock allocation rises from 60% to 80% as markets move; it is an example of allocation drift, not a recommended limit or a published concentration statistic. A larger AI or equity share may therefore reflect performance rather than a deliberate decision.
Document both the percentage difference and the reason for it. A deviation may be intentional, temporary, or a sign that the portfolio no longer matches your plan.
6. Read the fund documents before judging fit
For each fund that contributes materially to an AI exposure, check:
- Investment objective: what outcome or benchmark the fund is designed to pursue.
- Strategy: the selection method, geographic scope, sector focus, and any stated limits.
- Principal risks: concentration, market, liquidity, foreign-market, and other risks identified by the fund.
- Current holdings: the latest portfolio and the date to which it applies.
- Fees and expenses: costs that affect returns and the suitability of holding multiple funds with similar mandates.
- Shareholder report: portfolio information and performance context in the most recent report.
A fund’s name is not a substitute for its prospectus. The SEC’s mutual-fund prospectus guidance describes the objective, strategy, principal risks, fees, and performance information investors should review.

What concentration percentage is too much?
There is no single percentage in the cited SEC guidance that defines excessive concentration for every investor, and the guidance does not establish a universal limit for AI exposure. A percentage that is tolerable for one person may be unsuitable for another because goals, time horizon, income needs, emergency reserves, tax circumstances, and risk tolerance differ.
Instead of asking whether a number is universally “safe,” ask these questions:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- What percentage did you intend to place in this issuer, theme, sector, geography, or asset category?
- How large could a loss be without forcing you to sell at an unfavorable time?
- Will you need this money during the period in which the exposure could be volatile?
- Does the exposure duplicate other positions or diversify them?
- Would a decline undermine a specific goal, such as a near-term withdrawal or retirement income plan?
Use any personal alert level as a prompt for review, not as a claim of regulatory approval. The SEC’s allocation guidance emphasizes matching the mix to your own goals and risk tolerance rather than applying one cutoff to all investors.
Compare AI funds and holdings on the right axes
When deciding whether two holdings are complementary or redundant, compare the attributes below rather than relying on marketing labels.
| Comparison axis | Evidence to inspect | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Underlying holdings and overlap | Current top holdings, position weights, and repeated issuers | Reveals hidden dependence across funds and direct positions |
| Concentration dimensions | Industry, sector, geography, and security or asset category | Shows whether separate names share one economic risk |
| Mandate and strategy | Objective, benchmark, selection rules, and stated limits | Clarifies what the fund is actually designed to own |
| Risk and investor fit | Time horizon, goals, ability to withstand loss, and full-portfolio role | Determines whether the exposure is appropriate for your circumstances |
| Costs and disclosure quality | Expense information, prospectus, shareholder report, and holdings date | Helps distinguish useful diversification from costly duplication |
Decide what needs attention
When the exposure is intentional and affordable
You may decide to keep a concentrated position when it is deliberate, understood, and consistent with your goals and risk tolerance. Record the reason, the role the position is meant to play, and the loss or volatility you are prepared to accept. Recheck the actual exposure when holdings or market values change.
When market movement caused drift
If an AI or equity allocation has grown beyond the level in your plan, possible responses include selling part of an overweight asset, adding to underweight assets, or directing new contributions toward the underweight areas. The SEC describes these as examples of rebalancing approaches, not individualized instructions. Consider taxes, transaction costs, account restrictions, and the effect on your overall plan before acting.
When funds are duplicating one another
Compare the role, strategy, costs, and look-through holdings of the overlapping funds. A simpler combination may provide the exposure you actually want, but changing funds can have tax or trading consequences. Do not assume that replacing one name with another removes the underlying issuer or sector risk; verify the new holdings.

When the data is incomplete
Pause the conclusion if statements, fund holdings, or dates do not line up. Obtain the latest documents and label estimates clearly. A precise-looking percentage built from stale or partial data can create false confidence.
AI-generated portfolio analysis needs independent verification
Software that labels a portfolio “diversified” or calculates AI exposure can save time, but its output depends on the data, classifications, and assumptions it uses. An automated tool may miss a recently changed holding, classify an issuer differently from your fund, or fail to combine accounts.
The SEC, North American Securities Administrators Association, and Financial Industry Regulatory Authority warned in their January 25, 2024 investor alert that: “Be cautious about using AI-generated information to make investment decisions or to attempt to predict changes in the stock market’s direction or in the price of a security.” Read the joint AI and investment-fraud alert.
Use generated analysis as a draft checklist only. Confirm every material number against account statements and the fund’s own prospectus or shareholder report. Treat promises of guaranteed returns, little or no risk, or certainty about a stock’s direction as fraud warning signs, not evidence of diversification or quality.
A practical worksheet for your review
Create one row per direct position and one row for each fund. Keep the source date beside every number. Add columns for the following:
- Account and security
- Market value
- Percentage of total portfolio
- Fund or direct holding
- Top-issuer exposures and their reported weights
- Industry or sector
- Geography
- Asset category
- Intended role and target allocation
- Source document and “as of” date
After entering the data, sort or filter by issuer, sector, geography, and asset category. Highlight repeated names and any actual weight that differs materially from your written plan. Keep the worksheet with your investment records so you can distinguish a genuine change from a data-entry error at the next review.
When a professional review may help
Consider an independent, appropriately registered investment professional if you cannot obtain reliable look-through data, have complex accounts or tax constraints, or are unsure how a concentration interacts with a near-term goal. Ask how the person is compensated, what credentials and registration apply in your jurisdiction, and whether the review covers all accounts rather than one brokerage statement.
