Spot concentration risk by looking through every account and fund, then measuring exposure at four levels: individual issuers, technology and related industries, repeated holdings inside funds, and the portfolio’s overall asset-class mix. Compare the result with your goals, time horizon, and willingness and ability to withstand losses. There is no universal technology-allocation percentage that automatically makes a personal portfolio too concentrated.
What concentration risk means in a technology-heavy portfolio
Concentration risk is the possibility that too much of a portfolio’s value depends on one company, a group of companies with similar businesses, one sector, or one asset class. A portfolio can contain many tickers and still be concentrated if those holdings respond to the same events.
Technology concentration is broader than the label on a fund or the “information technology” sector classification. Software, semiconductors, internet platforms, digital-payment firms, communications businesses, media companies, and technology suppliers may be classified in different sectors even though their earnings depend on similar technology cycles. State the classification method you use, and flag businesses whose commercial exposure is materially tied to technology even when their formal sector label differs.
Investor.gov treats diversification within an asset class and diversification across asset classes as separate tasks. Owning many technology stocks may reduce single-company risk while leaving the portfolio heavily dependent on equities. Conversely, adding a bond fund does not remove an oversized position in one technology issuer. A useful review therefore measures each layer rather than relying on fund count.

The four measurements that reveal hidden concentration
| Measurement | What to examine | Question it answers |
|---|---|---|
| Issuer exposure | Each company held directly and through funds, aggregated across accounts | How much of the portfolio depends on one issuer? |
| Sector and industry exposure | Technology and related businesses under a stated classification method | Could one industry shock affect a large share of the portfolio? |
| Underlying overlap | Repeated top holdings in mutual funds and exchange-traded funds | Are apparently different funds actually owning the same companies? |
| Asset-class mix | Equities compared with bonds, cash, and other chosen asset categories | Is the portfolio’s risk dominated by equities regardless of issuer count? |
Reviewing only one of these measures can give a false sense of diversification. A broad technology index may contain dozens of companies but still have a few very large positions. Several broad-looking funds may repeat the same largest holdings. A portfolio diversified across sectors may still be almost entirely equities.
Step 1: Build one complete holdings inventory
Start with a current holdings report for every taxable account, retirement account, and other investment account. Include individual securities, mutual funds, exchange-traded funds, cash positions, and any employer or managed account that contributes to your investment risk.
- Record the market value of each position on the same date. Share counts alone cannot show relative exposure because prices differ.
- Record the account in which each position sits so you can trace duplication across accounts.
- Separate direct holdings from pooled vehicles such as mutual funds and ETFs.
- Note the fund’s stated mandate, such as broad market, sector, industry, thematic, or actively managed.
- Keep the report dated. Market movements can change weights even when you make no trades.
Use the total market value of all included investments as the denominator for a first-pass weight calculation:
Position weight = market value of the exposure ÷ total portfolio market value × 100.
Calculate the weight of each direct security before considering whether the same issuer appears elsewhere. This first pass often exposes a position that looked modest inside one account but is large when all accounts are viewed together.
Step 2: Aggregate the same issuer across direct holdings and funds
Issuer exposure is the amount ultimately dependent on one company, not the number of line items carrying its name. Add a company held directly to the portion represented by that company in each fund. If a fund holds 6% of its assets in a company and the fund is 10% of your portfolio, that fund contributes 0.6% of portfolio exposure to the issuer. Repeat the calculation for every fund where holdings data permits.

Fund holdings change, and disclosure dates differ. Use the latest holdings file available for each fund and record its “as of” date. Treat the resulting total as an estimate when the fund does not provide complete or current position data; do not present an estimate as an exact weight.

Why ticker counting fails
Counting ten funds as ten independent sources of risk assumes that each fund owns different securities. Investor.gov specifically advises checking the top holdings of multiple mutual funds or ETFs because funds may repeat the same companies. A narrowly focused fund also does not become broadly diversified merely because it contains many securities within its chosen niche.
What to flag
- The same company appears as a direct holding and among the top holdings of one or more funds.
- Several funds share a cluster of the same largest companies.
- A sector or thematic fund repeats companies already dominant in a broad-market fund.
- Holdings disclosures are old enough that the overlap could have changed materially.
When complete look-through data is unavailable, mark the exposure as unresolved and use the known top holdings as a warning signal rather than assuming the funds are independent.
Step 3: Map technology and related-industry exposure
Assign every holding to a sector and, where useful, a narrower industry. Keep the classification source consistent within the review, because providers can classify the same business differently. Then create a second “technology-related” view that captures companies whose results are materially linked to technology adoption, infrastructure, platforms, or digital products even when their formal sector is elsewhere.
Use two views instead of forcing one label
- Formal sector view: shows how the portfolio appears under the classification used by your fund reports or data provider.
- Economic-exposure view: adds businesses that share technology-driven revenue, supply-chain, or demand risks across formal sector boundaries.
The second view is not a replacement for the first. It is a stress-testing lens. Explain in your notes why a company was included, so another review can reproduce the result.

Sector totals can hide a narrower cluster. For example, a portfolio may spread exposure across information technology, communication services, and consumer businesses while still relying heavily on a small group of platform, semiconductor, or cloud-related companies. Industry grouping helps identify that common driver.

Do not infer that a high technology-related percentage is automatically unsuitable. Compare the measured mix with the investor’s objective, time horizon, and risk tolerance. The measurement identifies dependence; the personal plan determines whether that dependence is acceptable.
Step 4: Check the asset-class mix separately
After measuring issuers and sectors, calculate the share invested in equities, bonds, cash, and any other asset categories in the plan. Investor.gov describes asset-class diversification and diversification among securities within an asset class as distinct parts of allocation.
A portfolio can therefore have:
- Many technology issuers but almost no non-equity assets;
- Several equity sectors but a large total equity weight;
- A bond allocation that is itself concentrated in one issuer or credit type; or
- Cash that is intended for near-term spending and should not be treated as a long-term risk offset without considering the plan.
Record the reason for each asset class. A cash reserve for a known expense serves a different purpose from a strategic allocation intended to moderate portfolio volatility. The review should measure what is actually invested, not what an account label implies.

Step 5: Compare the measurements with the investor’s plan
Risk tolerance is both the willingness and the ability to lose some or all of the original investment in exchange for potentially greater returns, according to Investor.gov. A technology-heavy allocation may fit one investor’s long horizon and capacity for loss but conflict with another investor’s near-term spending needs.
Ask these plan questions
- When will the money be needed?
- Which losses could force a change in spending or a sale at an unfavorable time?
- Is the technology exposure intentional, or did it accumulate through performance and overlapping funds?
- How much volatility can the investor continue to hold without abandoning the plan?
- Would a prolonged period in which technology lags other sectors undermine the goal?
There is no universal technology percentage in the reviewed investor guidance that automatically defines a personal portfolio as too concentrated. A threshold copied from another investor, fund, or article may ignore the investor’s objectives and capacity for loss.
Why technology concentration can behave differently
An SEC-filed 485BPOS prospectus identifies several technology-related risks: intense competition, rapid product obsolescence, uncertain commercial success, technological change, and regulation. It also warns that technology securities may lag other industries or the broader market. These are risk disclosures, not a forecast that technology will underperform.

Companies in one sector can respond similarly to economic, regulatory, political, or market events. The filing states: “Companies in the same sector may be similarly affected by economic, regulatory, political or market events or conditions, which may make the Portfolio more vulnerable to unfavorable developments in that sector than a fund that has a more diversified portfolio.” Shared reactions are the reason a portfolio can fall together even when it owns many separate issuers.
An SEC-filed S-6/A trust disclosure gives a document-specific example of concentration: that trust defines itself as concentrated when 25% or more is invested in one sector. The disclosure also discusses short product cycles, competition, pricing pressure, changing technology, and volatile technology-company share prices. The 25% figure belongs to that trust’s definition; it is not an SEC recommendation or a universal limit for an individual investor.
Step 6: Test for drift after market moves
Strong relative performance can move holdings away from a target allocation and change the portfolio’s risk level, even without new purchases. Review the measured weights after major market moves and at a deliberate interval chosen in the investment plan.
Two practical review triggers
- Calendar review: check on a scheduled interval, such as the interval specified in the plan.
- Preset drift review: check when a holding, sector, or asset class moves beyond a percentage band selected in advance.
Investor.gov describes both approaches and notes that rebalancing tends to work best relatively infrequently. A review is not an instruction to trade every fluctuation. It is a decision point to determine whether the current mix still matches the selected plan.
Ways to rebalance
- Redirect new contributions toward underweight assets, when the plan and account rules permit.
- Reduce an overweight position and add to another asset or sector.
- Combine both methods to reduce the amount sold.
Taxes, transaction fees, account restrictions, and personal circumstances can materially affect the choice. Evaluate those consequences before selling, and obtain professional advice when the decision is beyond your expertise.

| Comparison axis | How to apply it |
|---|---|
| Largest issuer exposure | Rank the largest single-company weights after combining direct and fund-held exposure. |
| Sector and industry exposure | Compare technology and related-business totals using the same classification scheme. |
| Repeated holdings | Identify the companies appearing in multiple funds and estimate the portion of the portfolio they represent. |
| Asset-class mix | Compare equities with bonds, cash, and other chosen categories. |
| Goal and risk fit | Assess whether each measured mix fits the investor’s goals, time horizon, and willingness to tolerate losses. |
A broader alternative may reduce one type of concentration while introducing another. For example, lowering technology exposure does not by itself solve an oversized single-company position or an equity-heavy asset mix. Compare like with like and document what risk each change is intended to address.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Mistake: treating fund count as diversification
Correction: inspect top holdings and calculate look-through issuer exposure. Funds with different names or mandates can still share the same companies.
Mistake: using only formal sector labels
Correction: retain the formal classification, then add an economic-exposure view for technology-dependent businesses outside that sector.

A repeatable concentration-risk checklist
- Collect dated holdings reports for every investment account.
- Use market values and calculate each direct position’s portfolio weight.
- Download the latest available holdings for each mutual fund and ETF.
- Aggregate repeated issuers across accounts and through funds where practical.
- Group positions by formal sector and industry.
- Create a separate technology-related grouping with written inclusion rules.
- Calculate the asset-class mix independently of the equity-sector mix.
- Compare the measurements with goals, time horizon, and risk tolerance.
- Check whether recent performance has moved the portfolio away from its intended allocation.
- Choose a review interval or preset drift trigger and document any rebalancing decision.
Keep the worksheet and the classification rules together. That record makes the next review faster and shows whether a change came from market movement, a new purchase, a fund rebalance, or a change in the investor’s plan.
When to seek individualized advice
This framework is educational and does not determine an appropriate allocation for a particular investor. Consider individualized advice when the portfolio spans many accounts, includes complex employer or trust holdings, has significant tax consequences, or must support near-term spending. A professional can help interpret the measured exposures alongside the investor’s complete financial circumstances; the underlying concentration measurements still need to be assembled accurately.
