Start with patterns, not a single alarming number. A sudden unexplained spike followed by a drop, an unexpected country dominating plays, a surprising traffic source such as Spotify’s “Other,” or a brief follower surge are reasons to investigate. None proves that your music was streamed by bots or that you knowingly caused artificial activity. Compare the change with your release schedule, legitimate promotion, media coverage and audience activity, then ask your label or distributor to investigate and report suspicious playlists through the platform’s official channels.
Keep three records separate while you investigate: private analytics, public stream and chart figures, and the royalty report from your label or distributor. Spotify says those views can diverge during artificial-streaming reviews, so a dashboard spike is not a final royalty result.
What Spotify means by an artificial stream
Spotify defines an artificial stream as “a stream that doesn’t reflect genuine user listening intent, including any instance of attempting to manipulate Spotify by using automated processes (e.g. bots or scripts).” The definition focuses on listening intent and manipulation, not on a particular country, playlist, device or daily play count.
Artificial activity can be generated deliberately by a service, a playlist operator, a bot network or another party. It can also be sent toward an artist without the artist’s knowledge. Analytics can reveal an unusual pattern, but only the platform and the artist’s label or distributor can review the underlying activity and determine what happened.

Signals that deserve an investigation
Spotify’s artist guidance identifies several patterns that merit scrutiny. Treat them as prompts to collect evidence, not as a scoring system or proof.

These patterns become more meaningful when several occur together and have no matching event in your marketing calendar. A single unusual country, source label or successful day is not enough to label plays artificial.
Why an anomaly is not proof
Analytics are aggregated signals. They do not show the intent of each listener, the software used by a device, or the reason a playlist owner added a track. A legitimate recommendation can create a geography you have never targeted. A platform interface change can move plays between source categories. Reporting delays can make one date appear unusually high or low.

A practical investigation workflow
- Freeze the facts. Note the affected track, the first and last date of the anomaly, streams, listeners, followers, countries, source categories and visible playlists. Save dated screenshots or exports. Do not edit the record after the fact; add a note when you discover new information.
- Build a normal baseline. Compare the affected period with several earlier periods of similar length. Look at listeners as well as streams, repeat-listening behavior, saves, playlist adds and followers. A stream increase with no corresponding audience response is worth asking about, but it is not a mathematical test for fraud.
- Map known causes. Put release dates, advertising flights, creator posts, press mentions, radio or podcast appearances, tours, collaborations and playlist submissions on the same timeline. Include campaigns run by a label, manager or outside marketer. A plausible event does not automatically explain every play, but it gives the reviewer a starting point.
- Ask any marketer for method details. Request the channels used, targeting countries, dates, playlist names, ad destinations and reporting. Ask directly whether the service guarantees a number of streams or guaranteed playlist placement. Spotify advises researching methods and feedback from other artists; a provider that will not explain its process is a material risk.
- Contact your label or distributor. Send the timeline, screenshots, campaign information and the names and methods of any promotion services. Spotify says labels and distributors can work with its team and receive monthly reports about confirmed artificial streaming. Ask them to investigate rather than asking them to “keep” suspicious plays.
- Report suspicious playlists. Use Spotify’s playlist-reporting route when a playlist appears deceptive or the activity seems connected to it. If the concern involves another service, use that service’s own support and reporting process; there is no single cross-platform form established by the guidance.
- Recheck the later records. Review platform notices and the royalty report for the affected accounting period. Keep the original dashboard capture so you can distinguish a later adjustment from a data-entry mistake.
How to reconcile the numbers you see
Different views answer different questions. During a review, they may not update at the same time.

Do not infer your royalty payment from a temporary private-dashboard spike. Conversely, do not treat a lack of a visible spike as proof that every play was legitimate: Spotify says some confirmed activity can be removed before it appears in the dashboard.
What happens when Spotify confirms artificial activity
Spotify states that confirmed artificial streams do not earn royalties, do not count toward public numbers or charts, and do not positively influence recommendation algorithms. Depending on severity, further measures can include playlist removal and penalties or account action involving a distributor. The exact response is case-specific.

Spotify also says a per-track charge to labels and distributors for flagrant artificial streaming took effect on April 1, 2024. The charge applies only when artificial-streaming rates are very high. This is a policy mechanism, not a published prevalence rate or a threshold that artists can calculate from their own dashboard.

How to respond if a suspicious playlist added your song
Document the playlist without engaging in retaliation
Save the playlist name, curator profile, track position, date discovered, follower count shown at that time and any message or offer associated with it. Do not pay for a promised placement, send traffic back to the playlist, or attempt to inflate its activity to “balance” the numbers.
Report the playlist and notify your distributor
Submit the playlist through Spotify’s reporting channel and send the same factual record to your distributor or label. Include whether you submitted the track, authorized a campaign or had any relationship with the curator. If you did not authorize it, state that clearly without claiming to know who caused it.
Preserve campaign records
Keep invoices, contracts, ad-platform receipts, targeting settings and correspondence. These records help distinguish an authorized promotion from activity generated by an unknown party and let your distributor answer Spotify’s questions accurately.

How to screen a promotion service before hiring it
Spotify warns that paid third-party promotions promising streams or guaranteed playlist placement are not legitimate and may violate its terms. A service can sell advertising or campaign management without promising a stream count; the promise itself is the critical warning sign.

- Guarantee test: Reject offers that promise a fixed number of streams, a guaranteed chart position or guaranteed playlist placement.
- Method test: Require a plain-language explanation of where listeners will encounter the music, how targeting works and what reporting you will receive.
- Transparency test: Ask for the names or types of media and playlists involved, the countries targeted and the campaign dates. “Our algorithm handles it” is not a useful explanation.
- Track-record test: Look for independent artist feedback and ask whether clients have received distributor or platform warnings. Testimonials alone do not prove safe traffic.
- Control test: Make sure you can stop the campaign and receive spend and delivery records. Avoid contracts that prevent you from reporting suspicious activity.
Never hire a service to conceal an unusual pattern, remove evidence or make artificial streams appear organic. If a campaign creates a problem, tell your distributor exactly who was hired and what was promised.
Platform-specific rules: Spotify and YouTube are not interchangeable
Spotify
Spotify’s warning examples and dashboard behavior described above apply to Spotify. Its guidance directs artists to work through their label or distributor, report suspicious playlists and review the royalty report for the accounting result. Do not turn Spotify’s examples into a universal threshold for every music service.
YouTube
YouTube’s fake-engagement policy prohibits artificially increasing views and other metrics. Artificial traffic does not count and can lead to strikes. YouTube also says Analytics subscriber counts can lag the displayed subscriber count by approximately 48 hours while additional verification and spam review occur. That delay is specific to YouTube subscriber metrics; it does not explain a Spotify stream discrepancy or establish how another platform processes its data.
Common questions the patterns raise
“Why did my streams suddenly spike and drop?”
First match the dates against a release, campaign, press mention, performance or creator post. If no known event fits, record the spike and drop, inspect source and geography, and ask your distributor to investigate. The shape alone cannot identify bots.

“Why are most of my streams coming from one country?”
Check whether you recently reached that country through touring, advertising, language-specific content, a collaborator or media coverage. If the country is new, dominates the period and arrives with other unexplained changes, it is a warning sign Spotify says merits investigation—not proof of manipulation.
“Why does Spotify for Artists show streams that are not on my public count?”
Spotify can temporarily show confirmed artificial activity in private analytics while withholding associated royalties and adjusting public figures. It can also remove activity before a dashboard refresh. Use the dated dashboard record for the investigation and the distributor or label royalty report for accounting.
“Can a high stream-to-listener ratio prove bots?”
No public formula in the cited guidance labels individual streams as artificial, and no universal numerical threshold is provided. A high ratio can result from repeat listening by genuine fans, background listening, a focused fan community or manipulation. Treat it as context alongside the other signals.

The available platform guidance does not publish a bot-detection formula, a universal suspicious-play threshold, a measured industry prevalence rate or an artist-side test that conclusively labels an individual stream. A dashboard can tell you that activity changed; it cannot, by itself, tell you who caused it or whether a particular listener was genuine.
That limitation is important when communicating with fans, collaborators and media. Report what changed, when it changed and what you have asked the platform or distributor to review. Wait for a determination before naming a service, curator or person as responsible.
A documentation checklist for future releases
- Save a baseline export or screenshot before each major campaign.
- Keep a dated calendar of releases, ads, creator outreach, press, shows and playlist submissions.
- Store contracts and invoices for every outside promotion service.
- Record campaign targeting countries and the exact dates each campaign ran.
- Review streams, listeners, sources, locations, saves and followers together rather than relying on one metric.
- Archive suspicious-playlist details before the playlist changes or disappears.
- Send unusual activity to your label or distributor promptly and retain the case correspondence.
- Compare the final royalty report with the earlier dashboard period, allowing for platform review and adjustments.
The safest interpretation is disciplined and narrow: an unexplained pattern is a reason to investigate through the platform and distributor channels, not a verdict. That approach protects your account, preserves evidence and avoids treating legitimate audience behavior as fraud.
