Treat unsolicited WoW gold advertisements, power-leveling offers, credential requests, off-site login pages, reward promises, and urgent suspension threats as suspicious. Do not click, download, reply with account details, or continue the conversation. Right-click the message or sender, choose Report For: Spam, then block or ignore the character. Use Cheating when the issue is botting or another exploit rather than an advertisement.
If you already clicked a link or ran a file, change your password immediately, run a security scan, and use Blizzard account-recovery support if you lose access or items.
Quick triage: identify the contact and take the matching action
The fastest safe response depends on what the sender is doing and how much exposure occurred. This table separates advertising, phishing impersonation, cheating, and an actual account compromise.

A seller can fit more than one category. For example, an advertisement that leads to a fake login page is both spam and phishing. Report the contact in game, then follow the recovery steps for the level of exposure you had.

How suspicious gold sellers try to look legitimate
Unsolicited offers for gold or leveling
An unexpected whisper, party message, mail, or chat line offering gold, leveling, or another paid service is the clearest pattern. Blizzard’s right-click reporting guidance specifically describes Report For: Spam as the category for advertisements of illicit goods and services such as gold and leveling.
The offer does not become safe because the sender uses a familiar class, guild-style wording, a low price, or a promise of instant delivery. You do not need to investigate the seller’s claimed reputation. An unsolicited illicit-service advertisement is enough to stop the interaction and report it.
Reward stories designed to make you act quickly
Phishing messages often promise a pet, mount, free gold, or another reward. The reward may be presented as a promotion, a contest win, a customer-service gesture, or a requirement to “claim” an item through a linked page. These stories are designed to move you from the game client to a site controlled by the sender.
Do not follow a reward link from an unsolicited message. If a reward were legitimate, you should verify it through Blizzard’s established account and game interfaces rather than through the sender’s URL. A promise alone is not evidence that the message is official.
Urgent punishment or suspension threats
Another common approach claims your account will be banned, suspended, or deleted unless you verify your credentials immediately. Blizzard identifies urgent password requests and links to account-management pages outside Blizzard’s sites as phishing indicators.
Pressure is itself a warning sign. Stop, close the conversation, and use the normal account-management route you already know instead of the link in the message. Never provide a password in a whisper, mail reply, chat window, or form reached from an unsolicited message.
Requests for passwords or other credentials
A legitimate player does not need your Battle.net password to send gold, arrange a group, or discuss an account issue. Any request for a password, security code, or login information should be treated as an attempt to take over the account.

Blizzard warns that gold-selling and power-leveling services can promote account theft and exploitation. Even if the sender claims to be helping you recover an account or unlock a reward, do not disclose credentials in the conversation.
Fake Game Masters and Blizzard employees
A character name containing “GM,” “Blizz,” or “Blizzard” proves nothing. Anyone can put those words in a character name. Blizzard says a real Game Master contact has a special blue GM indicator and special chat presentation. Look for those official interface markers rather than relying on the displayed name.
If a supposed GM asks you to visit an external login page, share a password, or act under a sudden threat, treat the request as phishing even if the name appears authoritative. Report the message instead of trying to confirm the person by replying.
Suspicious in-game mail
Official Blizzard in-game mail displays a Blizzard logo. Mail without the expected official presentation, especially when it contains a link, credential request, reward claim, or threat, deserves caution.

Tell an advertisement from cheating or a compromise
Correct classification helps Blizzard route the report and tells you what to do next. Use the contact type and your own exposure, not the sender’s claimed identity, as the basis for the decision.

A name, guild tag, level, or claimed affiliation is not proof of legitimacy. In particular, “GM,” “Blizz,” and “Blizzard” in a character name are not official verification.

How to report a gold seller in WoW
1. Stop interacting before you report
- Do not click a link in the whisper, chat line, or mail.
- Do not download an add-on, executable, or other file offered by the sender.
- Do not enter a password or any other account credential.
- Do not continue the conversation to test whether the sender is genuine.
Preserve the visible sender name and message long enough to report it, but do not open suspicious destinations to collect more evidence.

- Right-click the sender or the relevant chat line.
- Choose Report For: Spam.
- Submit the report through the in-game prompt.
- Block or ignore the sender after reporting.
Blizzard says this report forwards illicit-goods advertisements and phishing reports to its staff and places the character on a temporary ignore. The option is intended for advertisements of illicit goods and services, including gold and leveling.
3. Use Cheating for bots or exploits
If the problem is a bot or another exploit user rather than an advertisement, choose the Cheating report category. Blizzard distinguishes Cheating from Spam for this purpose. Select the category that describes the conduct you observed; do not label ordinary spam as cheating merely because it is annoying.
4. Report suspicious mail from the open message
Open the suspicious message only far enough to use the available report control. Select Report Player in the open mail, then choose the category that matches the content. If the mail is an unsolicited gold or leveling advertisement, report it as spam. Do not follow its links or respond.
5. Use the fallback contact when the in-game option is unavailable
Blizzard’s reporting guidance lists hacks@blizzard.com for relevant details when the in-game report option is not available. Include the character name, the type of contact, and what occurred. Do not send your password or other secret credentials in the report.

Your next steps depend on what happened after the click. A click with no data entered is different from entering a password or running a downloaded file, but all three warrant caution.
If you clicked but did not enter information
- Close the page and do not return to it.
- Do not download anything it offers and do not approve browser prompts from the page.
- Change your password if the page appeared to be a login or account-verification screen.
- Run a security scan if the site prompted a download or if you are unsure what was executed.
- Report the original in-game contact as spam.
Do not assume a page is safe because it only displayed a login form. The purpose of a fake page is often to capture credentials without obvious symptoms.

If you entered your password or other credentials
- Change the account password immediately using a trusted account-management route, not the link from the message.
- Stop using the suspicious site and close any related browser tabs.
- Run a security scan on the computer used to enter the information.
- Check whether you can still access the account and whether characters, equipment, or materials have changed.
- Use Blizzard account-recovery support if access is lost or items are missing.
Blizzard warns that gold sellers and leveling services can steal Battle.net accounts and credit cards. A password change is therefore urgent even when the game still appears normal.
If you downloaded or ran an unknown file or add-on
- Disconnect from the suspicious activity and do not run the file again.
- Run a security scan on the affected computer.
- Change the account password immediately from a trusted device or trusted account-management path.
- Check for lost access, missing items, or unexpected activity.
- Contact Blizzard account-recovery support if anything is wrong.
Blizzard’s security guidance specifically recommends a security scan and an immediate password change when a suspicious add-on or file may have infected the computer.
If you can no longer access the account
Use Blizzard’s account-recovery support rather than negotiating with the seller. Explain that you interacted with a suspicious gold-selling or phishing contact, identify whether you entered credentials or ran a file, and report any missing equipment or materials. Stolen accounts can be stripped of equipment and materials, used for botting, and used to send more gold-selling spam.
Why buying gold from third parties is risky
Blizzard advises players not to buy gold from non-Blizzard sources. The risk is not limited to receiving an inferior service. Blizzard says gold-selling and power-leveling services promote account theft and exploitation, and its hacked-account guidance warns that these services often steal Battle.net accounts and credit cards.
Compromised accounts can be used for more than unauthorized purchases. Blizzard explains that attackers may remove equipment and materials, operate bots from the account, and use it to send additional gold-selling advertisements. Your account can therefore become part of the abuse even after the original seller disappears.
Third-party gold activity can also expose an account to enforcement. Blizzard describes an ongoing effort to combat bots, gold selling and buying, and spam. Avoiding the transaction removes the seller’s main opportunity to obtain your credentials and reduces the chance that your account becomes involved in prohibited activity.
The official alternative for obtaining in-game gold
Blizzard’s account-hacked guidance says players who want to exchange currency for in-game gold should consider the official WoW Token. It is the supported alternative identified in that guidance. Treat it as an in-game option accessed through Blizzard’s own systems, not as a reason to trust a third-party seller who claims to arrange the same exchange.

A message that uses the words “WoW Token,” “Blizzard promotion,” or “official seller” is not automatically genuine. Verify activity through the normal game interface and account-management channels; do not use a link supplied by an unsolicited contact.
Common mistakes that make a scam worse
- Replying to prove the seller is real: A reply confirms that your character is active and gives the sender another chance to pressure you.
- Clicking to inspect the offer: A page can be malicious even if it looks like a familiar account screen.
- Trusting a name that contains “GM” or “Blizzard”: Character names are not official credentials; look for the special blue GM indicator and chat presentation.
- Downloading a “verification” add-on: An unknown file can expose the computer and account. Blizzard recommends scanning the device when a suspicious add-on or file may have infected it.
- Reporting the wrong category: Use Spam for illicit-service advertising and phishing; use Cheating for bots or exploits.
- Waiting until items disappear: Change the password as soon as credentials may have been exposed, then contact account recovery if access or items are affected.
- Sending secrets in a support report: Describe the incident, but never include a password or other confidential login information.
A practical decision checklist
Use this checklist whenever an unfamiliar character, mail message, or supposed Blizzard representative contacts you:
- Is the contact unsolicited?
- Does it advertise gold, leveling, or another illicit service?
- Does it promise a reward such as a pet, mount, or free gold?
- Does it threaten a ban or suspension unless you act immediately?
- Does it request a password or direct you to an off-site login page?
- Does the supposed GM lack Blizzard’s special blue indicator and chat presentation?
- Does the mail lack the Blizzard logo or contain a suspicious link?
- Did you click, enter credentials, download a file, or lose access?
If any of the first seven answers is yes, stop interacting and report the contact. If the last answer is yes, add the security and account-recovery steps for the exposure you experienced.

What a legitimate-looking contact still cannot prove
Scammers can copy logos, use professional wording, quote your character name, and choose a name that resembles an official employee. None of those details replaces Blizzard’s in-game indicators or a trusted account-management route. Conversely, a message that looks awkward is not the only kind worth reporting: polished phishing messages can be just as dangerous.
Focus on the requested action. A request to visit an unsolicited external login page, provide credentials, claim an unexpected reward, or avoid a supposed suspension is suspicious regardless of how convincing the message appears.
Final safety rule
Do not use gold-selling or power-leveling services. Report unsolicited advertisements and phishing through Report For: Spam, report bots or exploits through Cheating, and block the sender after reporting. If you clicked, entered credentials, or ran an unknown file, secure the account immediately with a password change and security scan, then use Blizzard account-recovery support for any loss of access or items.
