If you see an American Express transaction, alert, verification request, or account change you cannot identify, stop interacting with the message and check your account through the official American Express app or website. Then contact Amex using the number on the back of your Card or sign in and start a chat. For U.S. cardmembers, the American Express Security Center also lists 1-800-528-4800 for suspected fraud.

This guide separates account-fraud reports from phishing reports, shows what to check before you contact Amex, and covers the account-security steps Amex recommends afterward. Contact routes can differ outside the United States and by account type, so use the number printed on your own Card whenever there is any doubt.

What to do first when activity looks suspicious

  1. End the suspicious interaction. Do not click a link, call a callback number, download an attachment, or reply with account details or a verification code. Open the Amex app yourself or type the American Express website address into your browser.
  2. Check the account directly. Review the transaction or alert in the signed-in account and compare it with what you actually initiated. Look at the amount, date, merchant description, and any account or profile change shown. This check can tell you whether the message corresponds to a real account event, but a familiar-looking descriptor is not proof that a charge is authorized.
  3. Contact Amex through a trusted route. Call the number on the back of your Card, or sign in and use Amex chat. The U.S. Security Center lists 1-800-528-4800 for suspected fraud (American Express Security Center).
  4. Keep a record. Note the transaction amount and date, the wording of an alert, the time you contacted Amex, and any instructions or reference information the representative provides. Do not delay reporting while trying to prove exactly how the activity occurred.

American Express states: "If you think you’ve been a victim of fraud, get in touch using the number on the back of your Card whether you are calling from the United States or overseas." That number is the safest choice when a message supplies a different telephone number.

Which activity deserves a closer look?

An unfamiliar transaction

A charge deserves investigation when you cannot connect it to a purchase, subscription, travel booking, authorized user, or other activity you recognize. Open the account rather than relying on a notification preview. Check whether the item is shown as pending or completed, read the displayed merchant information, and consider whether the amount and date match something you initiated. If you still cannot identify it, report it to Amex through customer support.

Amex’s security guidance does not claim to provide a complete checklist for interpreting every merchant descriptor. Treat the account record as a starting point, not as a reason to dismiss a charge that remains unfamiliar.

An unexpected fraud alert

Amex says its fraud alerts are automatic when it detects unusual account activity. An alert therefore means Amex’s systems noticed activity that warranted a warning; it does not, by itself, prove that the transaction is fraudulent. Sign in independently and see whether the alert corresponds to an action you made. If it does not, contact Amex using a trusted number or logged-in chat.

A verification request you did not initiate

Fraudsters may pose as support staff and ask for account information or a one-time verification code. An unsolicited caller, text, email, or pop-up requesting that information is a warning sign. Amex’s identity-theft guidance says not to share account details or verification codes with an unsolicited contact (American Express identity-theft guidance).

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

An account or profile change

Take action if you notice a contact detail, device, or other account setting you did not change. Do not try to correct the change through a link in an alert. Sign in through the official app or site, inspect the account, and contact Amex so it can direct you to the appropriate security process.

Use the right reporting route

The reporting channel depends on what you encountered. Sending a phishing email to the fraud telephone line, or treating an actual account charge as merely a spam message, can delay the response.

What happened Where to report it What to remember
You see an unrecognized charge, account change, or suspected account takeover. Call the number on the back of your Card, call 1-800-528-4800 in the U.S., or sign in and use Amex chat. Use a trusted route, not a number or link supplied by the suspicious contact.
You received a phishing email or text, or found a fake American Express website. Email spoof@americanexpress.com. This is Amex’s listed route for spoofing reports; it is separate from reporting account fraud.
You are calling from outside the United States. Use the number printed on the back of your Card. Amex specifically directs cardmembers to that number when calling from the U.S. or overseas.
You need general help with a dispute, PIN, password, or fraud-protection question. Use the U.S. Security & Fraud Help Center and its support options. Processes can vary by card, account type, and country.

How to report a suspected fraudulent charge or account change

Option 1: Call from a trusted number

  1. Turn over your Card and use the customer-service number printed there. For a U.S. suspected-fraud report, Amex also lists 1-800-528-4800 in its Security Center.
  2. Tell the representative that you are reporting activity you do not recognize. Give the transaction or account-change details exactly as displayed, including the date, amount, and merchant wording when available.
  3. Explain whether you received an alert, whether anyone contacted you, and whether you supplied any information. Accurate context helps the representative choose the correct security procedure.
  4. Follow only the instructions provided through that call. If you are asked to complete a step in the app or website, navigate there yourself rather than using a link from an earlier message.
  5. Write down the date, time, channel, and any case or reference information Amex gives you. Keep monitoring the account for additional unfamiliar activity.

Option 2: Use logged-in Amex chat

  1. Open the official American Express app or website yourself and sign in.
  2. Start the available customer-service chat while you are logged in. Explain that you need to report suspected fraud or an account-security concern.
  3. Describe the specific transaction, alert, verification request, or account change. Do not paste passwords or one-time codes into a conversation that you reached through an untrusted link.
  4. Save the conversation details or note the instructions and any reference information supplied by Amex.

Chat is a support route for suspected account fraud; it is not a substitute for the spoof-report address when the issue is a phishing email, text, or fake site.

How to report a phishing email, text, or fake Amex website

Amex lists spoof@americanexpress.com for reports of phishing emails or texts and fake American Express websites. Use that address for the deceptive contact itself, even when the message mentions a real-looking transaction.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Do not click the message’s links, open unexpected attachments, or call numbers included in it.
  2. Record enough information to explain what you received: whether it was an email, text, or website; the sender or displayed address; the time; and the web address shown without visiting it.
  3. Send the report to spoof@americanexpress.com. Do not include passwords, full authentication codes, or other sensitive information that is not needed to describe the spoof.
  4. If the message also relates to a charge or account change, contact Amex through the number on your Card or logged-in chat as a separate account-fraud report.

A phishing report does not tell Amex that your account has definitely been compromised. If you entered credentials, supplied a code, or see an unfamiliar account event, treat that as an account-security concern and contact Amex directly as well.

Handle verification codes and unexpected contacts safely

A verification code is not a harmless form field. It can be used to prove control of an account, which is why a fraudster may try to obtain it while pretending to be Amex. The safest rule is simple: never disclose account details or a verification code to an unsolicited caller, email, text, or social-media contact.

  • If a caller says there is an urgent problem, end the call and dial the number on the back of your Card.
  • If a text or email asks you to confirm activity, open the app or type the site address yourself instead of following its button.
  • If you already responded, tell Amex exactly what you shared when you report the incident. Do not conceal a code or credential because you are embarrassed; the information affects the support team’s next steps.
  • Do not assume that a message is genuine because it includes your name, a partial Card number, branding, or an accurate-looking amount. Those details can be used in impersonation attempts.

Amex’s account-protection guidance also warns against giving sensitive information to suspicious messages (American Express account-protection guidance). That page concerns checking-account protection, so use it here for the general warning about unsolicited contacts; use the Card number or logged-in chat for a card-fraud report.

Secure the account after you report the concern

Confirm your contact details

Amex says keeping your contact information current helps its automatic fraud alerts reach you. In your account’s Card Profile or contact-information area, verify that your phone number and email address are current and that you still control them. If a contact detail was changed without your permission, mention that when you contact Amex rather than trusting an email link that offers to restore it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Review saved devices

Review the devices linked or saved to your account. Remove any device that is lost, stolen, sold, shared unexpectedly, or no longer used. A device you do not recognize deserves the same attention as an unfamiliar transaction. Make the change from the official app or website, or ask Amex for help if you cannot safely access the setting.

Use available app security controls

Amex lists several app-security measures: enable biometric sign-in where your device supports it, turn on account notifications, and add the device to the account through the app’s available security controls. These settings can make it easier to notice future activity and reduce the chance that someone with casual access to the device can open the account.

Continue checking alerts and activity

Automatic alerts are useful only when they reach you and you review them. Keep your profile details current, pay attention to new notifications, and inspect the account directly when an alert does not match something you did. Do not disable a warning simply because one previous alert turned out to be legitimate.

How to investigate without making the situation worse

Use an independent path to the account

Links in messages can lead to imitation sign-in pages. Launch the Amex app from your device or enter the website address manually. A search result or bookmark you already trust is preferable to a link in an unexpected email, although the Card’s printed number remains the most dependable contact route when you are unsure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Separate “unrecognized” from “unauthorized”

First describe what you know: the transaction is unfamiliar, the alert was unexpected, or a setting changed. You do not need to decide the final classification before contacting Amex. Let the representative review the account and explain the applicable process. Avoid claiming that every unfamiliar merchant label is fraud, but do not ignore a charge merely because the description is plausible.

Do not test a suspicious link

Opening a site just to see whether it looks real can expose credentials or device information. Capture the visible sender, subject, or address without visiting the destination, then report the message through the spoof channel and contact Amex if your account may be involved.

Common mistakes and the safer alternative

Mistake Why it creates risk Safer alternative
Calling the number in an urgent text or email. The number may connect you to the impersonator who sent the message. Use the number on the back of your Card or start chat after signing in yourself.
Replying with a one-time code to “stop” a transaction. The requester may be trying to take control of the account. End the contact and report the concern through a trusted Amex channel.
Emailing a phishing message to the general fraud line. The report may reach the wrong workflow. Send phishing, spoof, and fake-site reports to spoof@americanexpress.com; report account events separately.
Ignoring an alert because the amount looks small. A small transaction can still be an account-security signal. Check the account directly and contact Amex when you cannot identify the activity.
Leaving an old phone or tablet saved to the account. An unused or lost device may retain account access. Review saved devices and remove those that are lost, stolen, or no longer used.
Posting screenshots publicly to ask whether a charge is real. Screenshots can expose account and transaction details. Keep evidence private and provide the relevant details directly to Amex.

What to record and what not to expect

Keep a private timeline containing the first alert or message, the account activity you saw, the channel you used to contact Amex, and the instructions you received. This record helps you describe a sequence accurately if another alert appears.

Do not assume that every case follows the same timetable or remedy. The U.S. Help Center groups charge disputes, PINs, passwords, and fraud protection under Security & Fraud, but the applicable process depends on the card and account details. Amex support can tell you which steps apply; the official pages do not establish one universal resolution time or outcome.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

U.S., overseas, and account-type limits

This guide uses American Express U.S. security and help-center instructions. Phone numbers, reporting addresses, app features, and legal procedures can differ in another country or for a different type of American Express account. If you are outside the United States, use the number on the back of your Card, as Amex’s Security Center directs. If you use a banking or other non-card product, explain the product type when you contact support so you are routed correctly.

For U.S. cardmembers, the core distinction remains: suspected activity on your account goes to Amex customer support, while phishing emails, texts, and fake Amex sites go to spoof@americanexpress.com. When both are present, use both routes.

Printable response checklist

  • Tell Amex whether you supplied account information or a verification code.
